To find unauthorized cloud database activity, correlate three evidence layers: control-plane changes, database or data-plane events, and network or application context. First preserve the logs, then verify that auditing was enabled and retained for the period in question; a missing record is not proof that no access occurred. Finally, tie each event to an identity, source, session, approved role, and change record before deciding whether it was unauthorized.
What counts as unauthorized database activity?
Unauthorized activity is not limited to a login by an unknown person. It can include a legitimate account used outside its approved purpose, a service identity reading data it does not need, a privileged user changing permissions, or a database action that was never approved. Audit the identity and the action together: a familiar username does not establish that a query was authorized.
Separate three questions during the investigation:
- Did an event occur? Look for authentication attempts, queries, reads, writes, permission changes, exports, and database configuration changes.
- Which principal or workload caused it? Resolve a human identity, assumed role, service account, or workload identity, then connect it to the client, host, application session, and source network where possible.
- Was it authorized and what succeeded? Compare the action with least-privilege access, approved work, timing, and usual behavior. Distinguish denied or failed attempts from successful operations and assess the resulting impact.
A log entry is evidence of an event, not by itself a verdict about intent. Conversely, no event in one log source does not prove that nothing happened: the relevant data-access category may have been disabled, a database audit policy may not have covered the operation, retention may have expired, or records may have been routed elsewhere.

Which logs should I collect?
Use multiple sources because each answers a different part of the question. Cloud control-plane records show changes to the environment; data-plane or database-native audit records show activity against the database; network and application logs help connect an account or connection to a person or workload.

Control-plane events
Collect events involving IAM roles and policies, database configuration, security groups or network rules, encryption keys, secrets, and audit settings or destinations. These can reveal how an actor obtained access, widened permissions, changed the database’s exposure, retrieved credentials, or weakened logging. Treat changes to the logging path as potential evidence in their own right.
Data-plane and database-native events
These records should capture the actions relevant to the database: authentication, statements or queries, reads and writes, grants and revocations, success or failure, and affected rows when available. Cloud provider API records are not a substitute for engine-level SQL auditing: an API event about a database resource may show a control-plane operation without showing which rows or statements were queried inside it.
Network and application context
Network flow and DNS records can add source and destination context, while application logs can map a shared service account to an end user or application request. Record the client IP, user agent, region, host, session or connection identifier, and workload where available. A database event attributed only to a shared application credential may need application-side correlation before it can be assigned to a particular user.

For an RDS investigation, combine CloudTrail control-plane records with the database engine’s audit logs. CloudTrail can show API activity and relevant configuration or identity changes; engine audit logs are needed for authentication and SQL activity inside the database.

AWS distinguishes management events, which cover control-plane activity, from data events, which cover resource operations. CloudTrail Event History provides 90 days of management-event retrieval, according to the AWS Security Incident Response Guide (2026). For longer retention and broader data-event coverage, use a trail or CloudTrail Lake rather than assuming Event History is a complete long-term record. AWS recommends a multi-Region trail, centralized analysis and response, and protection of the S3 bucket that stores CloudTrail files.
For the investigation window, collect relevant CloudTrail events involving the database, IAM, security groups, KMS, Secrets Manager, and logging changes. Pair them with RDS engine audit logs, VPC Flow Logs, Route 53 Resolver logs, and application logs that map service accounts to users. Check which of these were enabled and retained before interpreting a gap as evidence of no activity.
AWS Prescriptive Guidance frames an RDS audit around four questions: who viewed or modified sensitive data, when it happened, where a specific user accessed it from, and whether privileged users abused broad access rights. The questions are useful because each requires different evidence: SQL records for the data action, timestamps for sequencing, network and application context for location and attribution, and authorization review for abuse of privilege.
How do Google Cloud audit logs show database access?
Google Cloud Audit Logs has four classes: Admin Activity, Data Access, System Event, and Policy Denied. Admin Activity and System Event are always written. Data Access is disabled by default for most services, with BigQuery an exception, and enabling it can create chargeable log volume. Verify the setting for the database service and the relevant project, folder, or organization scope before relying on the records.

Use Logs Explorer or Log Analytics to filter by service, method, principal, resource, caller IP, and time. The caller identity is stored in protoPayload.authenticationInfo. For access investigations, retain the full relevant entry and correlate its principal and timestamp with database, network, and application evidence rather than relying on a display-name or a single filter result.
Permissions affect what an investigator can see. Logs Viewer does not expose Data Access logs in the default bucket; Private Logs Viewer is required for those records. If a search appears empty, check both the logging configuration and the reviewer’s IAM role before drawing a conclusion. Google Cloud audit entries are immutable, but that property does not compensate for data-access logging that was never enabled or for an investigator who lacks permission to view it.
How do Azure logs show database access?
Azure Activity Log records subscription-level control-plane operations and is collected automatically. Resource logs capture data-plane actions, such as database requests, and require a diagnostic setting. Activity Log entries are normally available within minutes and are retained for 90 days unless routed elsewhere, according to Microsoft documentation accessed October 25, 2026.

Azure SQL Auditing can send selected database events to Azure Storage, Log Analytics, or Event Hubs. Its records can include event time, client IP, database and server principals, statement, success status, affected rows, and session or connection identifiers. In Log Analytics, the category is SQLSecurityAuditEvents. These fields support event sequencing and attribution, but the actor still needs to be checked against approved access and application context.

Microsoft’s 2025 documentation sets a 4,000-character capture limit for the Azure SQL audit statement and data_sensitivity_information fields. A captured statement may therefore not contain the complete text of a longer statement; do not interpret a truncated field as the full operation. Microsoft also cautions that very high activity or network load can allow transactions to proceed without every marked event being recorded. Treat Azure SQL auditing as an important engineering control with limits, not proof that every event was captured.
Microsoft’s current setup guidance lists default action groups for completed batches and successful and failed database authentication. Protect the audit destination with least privilege. External diagnostic settings can be deleted in a way that causes auditing to fail silently, so alert on diagnostic-setting deletion and investigate it as a potential coverage change.
How do the provider logs compare?
The providers differ in what is collected automatically and which layer requires explicit configuration. Use the comparison to identify the first coverage checks; it is not a substitute for verifying the database engine, service, and destination actually in use.
| Provider | Control-plane coverage | Data-access coverage and detail | Retention or access caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS | CloudTrail management events; collect changes involving database, IAM, network controls, keys, secrets, and logging. | CloudTrail data events cover resource operations; RDS engine audit logs cover authentication and SQL activity. | Event History provides 90 days of management-event retrieval. Use a trail or CloudTrail Lake for longer retention and broader data-event coverage. |
| Google Cloud | Admin Activity and System Event logs are always written. | Data Access is disabled by default for most services; BigQuery is an exception. Caller identity is in protoPayload.authenticationInfo. |
Logs Viewer does not expose Data Access logs in the default bucket; Private Logs Viewer is required. |
| Azure | Activity Log is collected automatically for subscription-level control-plane operations. | Database resource logs require a diagnostic setting. Azure SQL Auditing can include statement, principals, client IP, outcome, affected rows, and session or connection identifiers. | Activity Log retention is 90 days unless routed elsewhere. High activity or network load can prevent some marked Azure SQL events from being recorded. |
Retention should be planned across providers rather than inferred from the shortest default window. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s 2023 guidance recommends retaining important cloud logs for at least six months. It also advises that activity logs for a resource should be combinable regardless of origin and that audit information should not be modifiable or deletable by either the organization or an attacker. Apply those principles to the destination, identities with access to it, and the process for exporting and reviewing records.

What is a repeatable investigation workflow?
Follow the steps in order: preserve first, establish what was actually logged, then attribute and assess. Keep a record of searches and decisions so another reviewer can reproduce the timeline.
- Define the question and time window. Name the database, sensitive schemas or tables, suspected identities, time zone, and first and last known-good events. Record the cloud account, subscription or project, region, and database engine.
- Preserve the evidence. Export or route relevant logs to a separate, access-controlled destination. Record query text, filters, and export time; calculate hashes if your process supports them. Do not leave the only copy under the control of a suspected administrator.
- Verify coverage before interpreting results. Check CloudTrail trails and data-event configuration, Google Data Access settings, Azure diagnostic settings, database audit policies, clock synchronization, retention, and destination permissions. Determine whether a relevant source was disabled, filtered, expired, or routed elsewhere.
- Build a timeline. Normalize timestamps to UTC and align control-plane changes with database events, network flows, and application sessions. Include changes to IAM, security groups, database settings, keys, secrets, and logging configuration.
- Attribute the actor. Resolve the human principal, assumed role, service account, or workload identity. Correlate client IP, user agent, region, host, and session or connection ID. Distinguish direct database access from activity mediated by an application or automation role.
- Test authorization and intent. Compare each operation with the principal’s least-privilege role, approved change or ticket, maintenance window, expected source network, and normal query pattern. Escalate privilege changes, new locations, unusual volumes, disabled logging, and access to sensitive objects.
- Check outcome and impact. Separate failed authentication or authorization from successful operations. Look for reads, exports, schema changes, grants, deletes, unusual affected-row counts, and follow-on key or secret access. Preserve exact statements when available, while handling sensitive values safely.
- Contain and recover. Follow the incident plan to revoke or rotate credentials, disable compromised sessions, preserve affected resources, and restore logging. Keep original evidence immutable and document each action so response activity does not become confused with the suspected activity.
- Close the logging gap. Tune alerts for logging-policy changes, anomalous principals and source networks, unusual database actions, and access to audit destinations. Review retention and permissions after the incident.
What should you conclude from the evidence?
State what the records establish and what they cannot establish. A defensible conclusion identifies the principal, operation, target, time, outcome, and supporting sources, then explains how authorization was evaluated. If records are missing or incomplete, name the specific coverage limitation rather than turning an absence into a claim that access did not occur.
Keep a distinction between an observed event and an inferred actor. A database record may identify a service credential while the application log identifies the user behind a request; a network record may show an address without proving who controlled it. Preserve those joins and their uncertainty in the timeline. Document log exports, filters, access to evidence, and response changes so the investigative record remains reviewable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can CloudTrail show the SQL statements run against an RDS database?
CloudTrail records API activity, but the SQL statements and database authentication activity for an RDS investigation come from the database engine’s audit logs. A CloudTrail API event alone should not be treated as a record of which rows or statements were queried.
Can cloud audit logs prove that data was copied outside the database?
A read or query record establishes database-side activity, not necessarily where the resulting data went. To assess possible transfer, correlate the database event with application, network, and destination-side evidence; a single database log rarely answers the full exfiltration question.
Why can Azure SQL auditing miss an event even when auditing is enabled?
Microsoft warns that very high activity or network load can mean transactions proceed without every marked event being recorded. The audit’s statement-related fields are also limited to 4,000 characters in Microsoft’s 2025 documentation, so a recorded field may not contain the entire statement.
