Audit an AI coding agent as if it were a separate, potentially over-privileged user. Inventory every credential and access path, assign the agent a named identity, restrict it to the files, commands and network destinations required for the task, and replace personal or long-lived keys with short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials. If exposure is suspected, disable the identity, delete or rotate the issuer-side credential, invalidate active tokens, remove stale permissions, inspect usage and logs, and verify that no downstream integration still works.
This approach is more reliable than trusting a prompt or a sandbox alone. An agent can read files, call tools, modify dependencies, generate logs and send network requests, so prevention, detection, containment and accountability must be designed together.
What counts as a secret in an AI coding workflow?
A secret is any value that authenticates or authorizes access: API keys, passwords, private keys, certificates, connection strings, session tokens and cloud credentials. Treat the agent, its session and every connected tool or MCP server as a principal that can potentially handle those values, even when the model is instructed not to reveal them.
Secret exposure is not limited to a committed file. An agent may encounter credentials in environment variables, .env files, a home directory, SSH configuration, CI settings, dependency metadata, generated diffs, screenshots, notebooks, prompts, instructions, test fixtures or logs. DOE guidance says: "Never place secrets (passwords, keys, tokens, certificates, or connection strings) in prompts, notebooks, screenshots, agent instructions, committed configuration files, test fixtures, or logs."

Why model instructions are not an access control
A sentence such as “never read the production key” is guidance to a model, not an operating-system permission. Authorization belongs in the surrounding runtime: file permissions, a sandbox, a firewall, an identity provider, a secret manager and human approval gates. The model should receive only the minimum data needed for the current action.
How do I build a complete secret inventory?
Start with metadata, not secret values. For each credential, record its issuer, owner, purpose, scope, expiry, last use, associated agent and session, repositories, tools, MCP servers, environment variables, home-directory files, CI configuration, logs and network destinations. Never paste the value itself into the inventory.
| Credential path | What to record | Useful first control |
|---|---|---|
| Environment variables | Variable name, issuing system, scope, expiry and processes that inherit it | Unset by default; inject a short-lived value only for the approved operation |
Repository and .env files |
Repository, branch, file path, history presence and owning team | Block reads of .env* and scan both the working tree and history |
| Home-directory credentials | Paths such as ~/.ssh/**, cloud credential files and configuration owners |
Run the agent under a dedicated account with those paths denied |
| CI and deployment settings | Job, environment, secret name, deployment target and approval requirement | Use a task-specific identity and require human approval for deployment actions |
| Tools, plugins and MCP servers | Connector name, permissions, repositories, resources and network destinations | Allowlist only the connectors required for the task |
| Logs and generated artifacts | Log location, retention, redaction rule and who can access it | Redact values and store immutable copies outside the agent’s control |
Also list the agent’s owner, initiating user, approver, repositories, environments and expected network destinations. A credential can be reachable through several paths, so compare the inventory with process-level environment, mounted files, tool configuration and inherited cloud roles rather than relying on the repository manifest alone.

How do I identify credentials that are already forgotten?
Use issuer records and access logs to find keys with no current owner, no expiry or no recent business purpose. A credential with an unknown owner is an incident of accountability even if there is no evidence of misuse; disable it after confirming that no required service depends on it, then document the replacement owner and scope.
How do I map an agent’s effective permissions?
Give each agent deployment a unique identity with a named owner. Calculate effective access across repositories, cloud roles, tools, plugins, MCP servers and downstream systems; the union of those permissions is the agent’s real capability, not the narrower list shown in one interface.
Start read-only and task-specific
Begin with read-only access to the smallest repository and directory set that supports the task. Add a command, file path, API operation or network destination only when a concrete requirement is documented. Separate identities for coding, testing, release preparation and deployment prevent a low-risk task from inheriting production authority.

Keep authorization outside the model
Enforce policy in the host, proxy, identity provider and tool gateway. The agent can request an action, but a policy layer should decide whether the action is permitted, whether approval is required and which identity performs it. Human approval should be mandatory for pushes, merges, deployments, deletes, permission changes, credential changes and new network destinations.
Review aggregate permissions regularly
Compare the agent identity with the repositories and systems it actually touched. Remove roles that were granted for a completed project, stale integrations and duplicate credentials. Record the reviewer, date, scope and resulting change so an auditor can distinguish an intentional exception from drift.
How can I stop an agent from reading .env files or SSH keys?
Use layered runtime restrictions: keep secrets in an approved managed secret service, deny sensitive paths and unrestricted network access by default, and inject a credential only for the approved command or API call. A sandbox is useful, but it does not remove the need to revoke a credential at its issuer.
Deny sensitive file locations
Block reads of .env*, ~/.ssh/**, cloud metadata endpoints, credential files, CI secret stores and any mounted directory containing production material. Apply the rule to file reads, archive creation, copy operations and command execution; otherwise an agent may bypass a simple editor restriction with a shell, package script or archive tool.
Restrict shell and network capabilities
Allow only the commands needed for the task and route outbound traffic through a firewall or proxy with an explicit destination allowlist. Deny arbitrary DNS, raw sockets, cloud metadata access and unreviewed upload destinations. Log every denied attempt as well as every approved request, because repeated attempts to reach a credential path or unexpected host are useful detection signals.
Inject secrets just in time
Retrieve a short-lived, scope-limited value from a managed secret service immediately before the operation that needs it. Pass it through a controlled process boundary, prevent it from being written to files or command history, redact it in output, and terminate the process when the operation ends. Do not expose a broad environment inherited by every tool in the session.

Verify platform isolation claims
Some coding-agent platforms describe ephemeral, firewalled execution, repository-scoped access and automatic security validation. Treat those as controls to verify in your own configuration, not as substitutes for issuer-side deletion, token invalidation and downstream authorization checks.
How do I detect that an agent has exposed a secret?
Detection should cover source, history, generated output, dependencies, tools and runtime behavior. Scan working trees and repository history, enable push protection where available, inspect agent-generated diffs, review dependency changes and alert on unexpected file or network access.
Scan before and after every agent session
Run secret scanning on the starting repository and on the final diff, including generated files and test output. Scan history because a value removed from the latest commit may remain valid in an earlier commit or tag. Push protection can block recognizable credentials before they enter repository history; GitHub reported an average of 26 credential matches per second in public scanning in Q2 2026.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect dependency and tool changes
Review new packages, lockfile changes, scripts, plugins and MCP configurations separately from the code diff. A package can receive credentials through environment inheritance or invoke a network destination that the source review does not reveal. Check advisories and provenance for new dependencies before allowing an agent-generated change to merge.
Log actions with enough context to investigate
Centralize redacted records containing the agent identity, initiating user, session and correlation IDs, tool or command, resource and file scope, destination, approval decision, timestamp and resulting diff. Keep an immutable copy outside the agent’s account. Do not log raw secrets; preserve hashes, key identifiers or issuer references when they are needed to correlate an event.
Use anomaly signals
Alert on access to credential-file patterns, unusual repositories, high-volume reads, unexpected destinations, attempts to disable logging, repeated denied actions and use of a credential outside its normal time or service. An alert is a prompt to inspect issuer usage and session records, not proof that the agent exfiltrated a value.

What should I do if an agent exposed an API key?
Assume the key is compromised until the issuer confirms otherwise. Containment starts at the issuer, not in the repository or agent sandbox.
- Identify the exact credential. Use the key identifier, issuer records, scan result and session logs to distinguish the exposed key from similarly named credentials. Note where it appeared and the earliest possible exposure time without copying its value into a ticket.
- Disable or delete it at the issuer. OpenAI’s issuer guidance specifically says to delete a compromised API key and review API usage. For other services, use the equivalent disable, revoke or delete operation and capture the confirmation.
- Invalidate active sessions and tokens. Revoke refresh tokens, session cookies, temporary credentials and delegated grants that could have been minted from the exposed identity. Deleting a parent key does not necessarily terminate already issued sessions.
- Remove the agent’s roles and integrations. Detach repository permissions, cloud roles, tool connectors, MCP servers and automation hooks that are no longer required. Suspend the agent identity if its activity cannot be bounded quickly.
- Review usage and preserve evidence. Examine issuer usage, audit logs, agent tool calls, repository history, generated artifacts and downstream system logs. Preserve timestamps, identifiers and redacted copies before cleanup changes the evidence.
- Issue a replacement with narrower scope. Create a new, short-lived credential owned by a named team or service, limit it to the required resources and set an expiry. Update the approved secret injection path rather than placing the replacement in prompts, source, fixtures or logs.
- Verify downstream authorization. Test the old key, tokens and integrations from the relevant clients and confirm that each now fails. Check for cached credentials, scheduled jobs and secondary systems that may still accept the old identity.
When should you treat exposure as an incident?
Escalate immediately when a secret entered a public repository, an untrusted log, an uncontrolled network destination or a session whose tool and file access cannot be reconstructed. The absence of evidence in agent logs is not evidence of safety if logging was incomplete or the agent could alter its own records.
How do I rehearse an emergency kill switch?
Microsoft recommends testing a revocation path that disables the agent, rotates credentials, invalidates tokens and removes stale permissions. Run the exercise in a controlled environment, then repeat it with the same operators and approvals who would respond to a real exposure.
Test the sequence
- Disable the unique agent identity and confirm new sessions cannot start.
- Delete or rotate each issuer-side credential associated with the identity.
- Invalidate active tokens, sessions and delegated grants.
- Remove repository, cloud, tool and integration permissions that are not independently owned.
- Attempt the previously allowed operations and verify that they fail at the authorization boundary.
- Restore only the minimum approved access and confirm that audit records show the new owner, scope and expiry.
Measure revocation, not just completion
Record the time from detection to disablement, issuer deletion, token invalidation and verified downstream failure. Track which systems lacked a usable emergency control, which logs were unavailable and which permissions survived the exercise. Fix those gaps before relying on the kill switch.
Which controls prevent, detect and contain agent credential risk?
Use the controls as a chain: prevention reduces opportunities, detection reveals bypasses, containment limits damage and accountability makes every decision reviewable.

How should teams operate this workflow day to day?
Make the controls part of the agent’s onboarding and every material change, rather than an incident-only procedure.

Before granting access
- Name the agent, owner, approver, repositories, tools, MCP servers, environments and network destinations.
- Create a dedicated identity and document the minimum read, write and execute scope.
- Configure denied paths for
.env*,~/.ssh/**, cloud metadata and credential stores. - Set expiry and issuer-side deletion procedures before creating a credential.
At the start of a task
- Confirm the repository, branch, task scope and expected destinations.
- Start with read-only access and request an explicit approval for any irreversible action.
- Inject only the short-lived values required for the current operation.
- Verify logging, redaction and correlation IDs before allowing tool calls.
At review and completion
- Inspect the complete diff, generated files, dependency changes and tool configuration.
- Run secret scanning on the working tree and history, and confirm push protection is active.
- Remove temporary roles, sessions, mounts and credentials that the task no longer needs.
- Record the final owner, permissions, expiry, approvals and downstream result.
What are the most common audit failures?
Relying on a personal developer key
A personal key ties agent activity to a human account, often grants unrelated access and makes emergency disablement disruptive. Replace it with an agent identity whose owner and scope can be changed without locking out the developer.
Scanning only the latest commit
History, tags, generated archives and logs can retain a valid value after a file is deleted. Scan those surfaces and revoke the credential first; rewriting history does not make an exposed key trustworthy again.
Allowing broad network egress
Unrestricted outbound access makes a harmless-looking tool call capable of sending data to an unreviewed destination. Route traffic through an allowlist and require approval for a new host.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assuming a sandbox revokes credentials
Isolation can stop a process from reading a path, but it cannot invalidate a key that was already copied, logged or used by another integration. Issuer-side deletion and downstream verification remain mandatory.
Keeping logs inside the agent environment
An agent or compromised process may alter local records. Send redacted events to an external, access-controlled store and retain the correlation information needed to reconstruct who approved each action.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if a secret is found in Git history but the current file is clean?
Treat the historical value as active until the issuer disables it. Revoke or rotate it first, then assess repository visibility, forks, caches and clones; history cleanup can reduce future exposure but does not restore the credential’s safety.
Can I safely pass a secret to an agent through an environment variable?
Only when the variable is injected for a narrowly defined process, expires quickly, is unavailable to unrelated tools and is redacted from output and logs. A broadly inherited environment is effectively a shared credential store and should be replaced with just-in-time retrieval.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do short-lived tokens remove the need for an emergency revocation test?
No. A token may remain usable until its expiry, and a service may issue refresh tokens or downstream sessions with longer lifetimes. Test disablement, invalidation and failed reauthorization so the team knows what actually stops access.
What evidence should I preserve after an agent-related credential incident?
Keep issuer usage records, agent session and tool-call logs, repository and generated-artifact locations, approvals, timestamps, key identifiers and downstream authorization results in redacted form. Store the evidence outside the agent’s account before deleting or rebuilding its runtime.
