Audit an AI agent as if it were a person with delegated authority—not as if it were only a chat window. First inventory every agent, connected application, identity, token, data source, and tool. Then remove unnecessary scope, separate read access from write access, require a fresh approval for irreversible actions, monitor what the agent does, and test that revocation actually blocks new calls. Disconnecting an account stops future access, but it does not automatically erase data the agent already copied, nor does it undo changes it made.
What is an AI-agent access audit, and why does it matter?
An access audit is a documented review of an agent’s identity, authority, data reach, tools, tokens, activity, owner, and shutdown path. The agent may be an automation in a productivity suite, a workflow bot, a custom service using APIs, or a chat application with connected accounts. In each case, the important question is not merely “What can the model answer?” but “What can the delegated identity do in my accounts?”
OAuth consent can authorize more than reading. Depending on the grant, an agent may create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or change permissions. Its effective authority can also be broader than the first consent screen suggests because plugins, downstream APIs, linked identities, and inherited roles add permissions. Microsoft’s guidance calls for a unique, dedicated agent identity with a named owner or sponsor and approver, a documented purpose, an aggregate-permission review, default denial of unreviewed tools, detailed logs, tested revocation, and a new review whenever the workflow or data scope changes.

What should I record for every connected AI agent?
Create one record per agent and update it when its workflow, model, plugin, tenant, or data scope changes. A record that lacks an owner or a disablement path is not ready for production use.
| Audit area | Record these details | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and accountability | Agent and app name; provider account; workspace or tenant; human owner; business purpose; deployment environment; named sponsor and approver. | Provides a person who can answer why the agent exists and who can authorize suspension. |
| Authentication | Authentication method; token type; token lifetime; delegated or application permissions; consent-grant date; last-use evidence. | Shows whether access is tied to a person, a service identity, or a durable secret, and whether it is still being used. |
| Data boundaries | Mailboxes, files, calendars, contacts, repositories, tickets, databases, sensitive labels, sites, and tenants the agent can reach. | Prevents a broad account connection from hiding access to unrelated or sensitive information. |
| Tool and action manifest | Every plugin and API, with its action class: read, create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or permission change. | Distinguishes harmless retrieval from actions that affect people, money, systems, or records. |
| Effective authority | Aggregate permissions across the agent, plugins, downstream APIs, and linked identities; resource, operation, tenant, and data-classification scope. | The most permissive combination—not any single consent screen—determines what the workflow can actually do. |
| Control and recovery | Log fields; alert rules; expiry; disablement path; credential-rotation path; rollback or compensating action; deletion request path. | Lets you contain an incident and prove what happened after access is removed. |
Attach evidence to the record where your systems permit it: the consent grant, role assignment, token metadata, tool manifest, last-use event, approval policy, and a successful revocation test. If a value is unknown, mark it as unknown and assign an owner to resolve it rather than treating the missing information as “no access.”
How do I determine an agent’s effective permissions?
Read each permission in context and then calculate the union of all paths the agent can use. A read-only connector can become write-capable if the same workflow can invoke another identity or API with write authority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMap the identity chain
Start with the principal that authenticates to the provider. Note whether it is a user-delegated grant, a dedicated service identity, a managed identity, or a stored secret. Follow every hand-off: agent to plugin, plugin to downstream API, and downstream API to a linked account or tenant. Record inherited roles and group membership as well as permissions granted directly.
Map resources and operations separately
For each resource, write the allowed operation rather than a vague label such as “Gmail access” or “Drive access.” For example, distinguish reading a specific mailbox label from sending messages, or reading one repository from changing branch permissions. Scope by resource, data classification, operation, site, repository, mailbox, and tenant whenever the provider supports it.
Check the dangerous combinations
Look for combinations that create a larger risk than any single permission: read access plus export, file access plus external sharing, calendar access plus message sending, or deployment access plus secret retrieval. Verify that the agent cannot turn a retrieved secret into a new credential or use a broad administrator role to bypass the intended task boundary.
How should I restrict an AI agent without breaking its workflow?
Begin with deny-by-default and add only what the documented task requires. Apply least privilege to five dimensions: identity, data, tools, operations, and time.

Use a dedicated, narrow identity
Give each production agent a unique principal with a named human owner and approver. Do not share a personal administrator account among agents. Where available, prefer managed or federated identities over copied secrets, and keep read-only and write-capable work on separate identities so a retrieval task cannot silently inherit editing authority.
Limit data to the smallest useful boundary
Choose specific mailboxes, labels, folders, sites, repositories, databases, tickets, or calendar collections. Exclude sensitive labels and unrelated tenants. A task that needs a single folder should not receive an entire drive; a task that drafts replies should not automatically receive permission to send them.
Approve tools, not just applications
Review every tool in the manifest and deny unreviewed tools by default. Separate read, create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, and permission-change operations. Re-check authorization in the downstream system at invocation time, binding the request to the initiating principal, exact action, and target resource.
Shorten token lifetime and remove stale access
Use short-lived tokens where possible and set an expiry or review date for grants. Remove unused permissions and old credentials. Never place long-lived secrets in prompts, environment files, shell history, agent configuration, or logs. Rotate credentials when an agent is disabled, its owner changes, or a secret may have been exposed.

Put an independent gate in front of high-impact actions
Require a fresh approval immediately before an irreversible or externally visible operation: sending a message, deleting a record, exporting data, making a purchase, deploying code, or changing permissions. The approval should identify the initiating principal, proposed action, target, and consequence; a one-time consent given during setup is not a substitute for this gate.
How do I audit and restrict an agent step by step?
Use this sequence for a new connection and repeat the relevant steps after every material change.
- Name the owner and purpose. Record the business outcome, deployment environment, sponsor, approver, and a precise statement of what the agent is allowed to accomplish.
- Inventory the connection. Capture the provider account, tenant, authentication method, token type and lifetime, consent date, last-use evidence, linked identities, plugins, and downstream APIs.
- Enumerate data and actions. List each mailbox, file area, calendar, repository, ticket system, database, or label. For each, mark the exact operations—read, create, edit, send, delete, export, purchase, deploy, or permission change.
- Calculate aggregate authority. Combine direct grants, inherited roles, plugin permissions, and downstream credentials. Treat the broadest reachable path as the effective permission set.
- Reduce scope. Replace administrator or owner roles with task-based roles, narrow resources and tenants, remove unused tools, and split read-only and write identities.
- Add approval and monitoring controls. Gate high-impact actions, bind each call to the initiating principal and target, and configure logs and alerts before enabling production use.
- Test the lifecycle. Pause the agent, revoke its grant, invalidate active tokens, and verify that a new call is denied. Confirm that the disablement and credential-rotation paths work for the owner and an authorized backup.
- Record recovery and review triggers. Document rollback or compensating actions, how to request deletion of copied data, and the events that require re-review: a workflow, tool, model, tenant, owner, or data-scope change.
How do I review and revoke AI-agent access in a Google Account?
Open the Google Account linked-apps page and inspect every entry’s data and service access. Google provides controls to remove an app’s access and an Agent access filter that can stop a Google AI agent from interacting with a linked app.

Use the two controls for different purposes
Stopping agent access blocks the Google AI agent from interacting with the linked app, but it does not necessarily remove the underlying app link. Deleting the app link is a separate action. Perform both reviews when you need to prevent future calls through the agent and eliminate the provider authorization itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Verify the result
After removal, check the app and agent listings again, invalidate any active tokens the provider exposes, and attempt a harmless new call using the disabled connection. A denied call confirms that future access is blocked; it does not demonstrate that previously copied data has been erased.
How do I remove an app’s access from my Apple Account?
At account.apple.com, choose Sign-In and Security → Account Data Sharing, select the app, and choose Remove access. Apple says the app cannot access the shared data again until it is authorized.
Record the app name, account, removal time, and the person who performed it in the agent’s audit record. If the agent used another provider or service identity in addition to Apple’s sharing connection, revoke those grants separately; removing one account-sharing authorization does not prove that every downstream credential is disabled.
How do I disconnect connected apps in ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Apps or Plugins, select the app and connected account, and choose Disconnect. Disconnection stops future access through that account, while permission-setting changes alone do not revoke the provider authorization.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review the data held in separate places after disconnecting. Existing conversations, uploaded files, memories, and data retained by the connected provider may require separate deletion or account-management actions. Capture those actions in the same incident or offboarding record instead of assuming that disconnecting the connector erased them.
Does revoking access delete data an agent already copied?
No. Revocation and deletion are different controls. Removing a grant or disconnecting an account prevents new calls through that authorization, but it does not automatically delete data the application or provider already retained, and it does not reverse messages sent, records changed, files exported, purchases made, deployments performed, or permissions altered.

After revocation, identify every location to which the agent could have written or exported data. Request deletion through the app or provider’s available process, subject to that service’s retention rules, and preserve the request and response. For business records, follow your legal-hold and retention requirements rather than deleting evidence blindly.
What should I do when an agent must be shut down immediately?
Contain first, then investigate and recover. Use the following order so the agent cannot continue making changes while you review its history.
- Pause or disable the agent and remove its tool access.
- Revoke OAuth grants and disconnect provider accounts associated with the workflow.
- Invalidate active tokens and rotate credentials. Remove exposed secrets from logs, prompts, configuration, environment files, and shell history.
- Inspect audit logs for reads, writes, sends, exports, purchases, deletions, and permission changes. Record the initiating identity, scope, target resource, timestamp, and result for each relevant event.
- Request deletion of copied data from the application or provider; do not treat revocation as proof of erasure.
- Restore or compensate for unintended changes. Use backups, message recall or correction procedures, permission restoration, transaction reversal, or an equivalent documented remedy where available.
- Document the incident and owner decision. State why access was stopped, what evidence was found, which data may have been exposed, and whether the agent will be rebuilt with narrower scope.
- Re-run the access inventory before re-enabling any workflow, including its model, tools, tenant, identities, and data boundaries.
What should AI-agent logs and alerts contain?
Logs must let an investigator reconstruct who requested an action, what the agent attempted, and which authority allowed it. Capture the agent identity, human or service initiator, provider account, tenant, token or grant identifier where safe, tool name and version, exact operation, target resource, data classification, decision (allowed or denied), approval evidence, timestamp, and outcome. Keep enough context to distinguish a read from an export or a draft from a sent message.
Alert on behavior that violates the documented purpose: a new tool, an unfamiliar tenant, access to a sensitive label, a sudden increase in export or deletion activity, a permission change, a token used after its expected expiry, or an action attempted without the required approval. Logs should be protected from alteration and should not contain the secrets they are meant to help you rotate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare agent platforms or governance tools?
Compare controls, not marketing labels. A platform that lists many integrations is not necessarily safer if it cannot separate read and write operations, constrain resources, or prove revocation.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Permission granularity | Can access be limited to a specific resource, operation, data classification, site, repository, mailbox, or tenant? |
| Read/write separation | Can retrieval identities be prevented from sending, editing, deleting, exporting, purchasing, deploying, or changing permissions? |
| Approval controls | Is a fresh, independent approval required for irreversible or externally visible actions, and is that approval logged? |
| Token lifetime | Are short-lived tokens, expiry, rotation, and immediate invalidation supported? |
| Resource and tenant scoping | Can the same agent be prevented from crossing sites, repositories, mailboxes, databases, or tenants? |
| Audit-log completeness | Do logs identify the principal, scope, tool, operation, target, approval, timestamp, and result? |
| Revocation speed | Can an owner disable the agent, revoke grants, invalidate tokens, and verify denial without waiting for a provider-wide process? |
| Recovery support | Are rollback, compensating actions, data-deletion requests, and incident exports documented and usable? |
| Provider coverage | Does the control plane cover every connected account and downstream API, or only the front-end application? |
What are the most common audit mistakes?
Treating the agent as a chat feature
A conversational interface can conceal a real principal with delegated authority. Fix this by assigning an owner, recording the identity and purpose, and auditing its tools and tokens like any other production service.

Using one powerful identity for every task
A shared administrator or owner identity makes a harmless read task capable of making unrelated changes. Replace it with dedicated, task-based identities and separate read-only from write-capable workflows.
Assuming a disconnect is an erasure request
Disconnection blocks future calls but does not prove that copied data, sent messages, exported files, or changed records are gone. Add a separate retention and deletion review to offboarding.
Skipping the revocation test
Removing a visible connection may leave active tokens, another linked account, or a downstream credential. Test a new call after revocation, inspect logs for denied attempts, and rotate credentials that could still be used.
Allowing high-impact actions without a second decision
Sending, deleting, exporting, purchasing, deploying, and changing permissions can create irreversible consequences. Require a fresh approval tied to the exact target and action immediately before execution.
How do I keep the audit current?
Make re-review event-driven. Start it when the workflow, model, plugin, tool manifest, owner, tenant, connected account, or data scope changes, and when logs show a new action class. At each review, compare the current inventory with the approved purpose, remove unused grants, confirm token expiry and alerting, and repeat a revocation test. Keep the prior record so you can explain when authority changed and who approved it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent use a different identity than the account owner who set it up?
Yes. A user may grant access while the workflow later calls APIs through a service, managed, or linked identity. The audit should record both the person who authorized the connection and every principal used during execution, because the latter determines the effective authority.
What proves that a revocation test was successful?
You need more than a disappeared connection entry. Save the revocation time, the grant or token affected, a subsequent denied-call result, and the corresponding audit-log event; then check that no alternate credential or linked account can still complete the same operation.
How often should an agent’s permissions be re-reviewed?
There is no universal calendar interval that fits every workflow. Re-review immediately after a change to the model, tools, owner, tenant, workflow, or data scope, and follow your organization’s periodic control schedule for unchanged agents.
Should copied data be handled as a security incident?
Treat it according to the sensitivity of the data, where it was retained, and whether policy or law requires notification. Revocation limits additional access, while the retention review determines containment, deletion requests, evidence preservation, and any required reporting.
