Audit an x402 integration as a payment system, not as a plug-in. Before an AI agent can spend money, pin the exact SDK build, inspect an unpaid HTTP 402 challenge, verify every scheme-and-network pairing, constrain the signer with spending policy, and run settlement and failure tests on testnet or a tightly capped wallet. Treat challenge fields as untrusted input until the recipient, token, amount, chain, resource, expiry, and nonce satisfy your policy. Approval should cover the protocol behavior, dependency supply chain, wallet custody, facilitator, and paid endpoint separately.
This process prevents an agent from signing an unexpected payment, sending funds on an unsupported chain, paying an untrusted recipient, or losing track of a settlement when the HTTP response fails.
What does an x402 payment exchange actually do?
x402 is an HTTP payment exchange. A client requests a resource, the server answers with HTTP status 402 and payment requirements, the client chooses a compatible requirement and signs a payment locally, then retries the request with the payment signature. The resource server or a facilitator verifies and settles the payment before returning the resource and a payment response.
| Stage | What happens | Audit evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Request | The agent requests the protected URL without payment. | Request ID, URL, method, and timestamp |
| Challenge | The server returns HTTP 402 with a PAYMENT-REQUIRED header containing one or more PaymentRequirements entries. |
Raw status, headers, body, and decoded requirements |
| Selection | The client selects a requirement it can support and that passes local policy. | Selected scheme, network, token, amount, recipient, and policy decision |
| Signing | The agent creates a PaymentPayload with its controlled signer. |
Non-secret payload hash and signer identity |
| Paid retry | The client repeats the original request with a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. |
Request ID, URL and method comparison, signature hash, and retry count |
| Verification and settlement | The resource server verifies locally or asks a facilitator to verify and settle. | Verification result, settlement status, transaction reference, and facilitator response |
| Receipt | The server returns the resource and a PAYMENT-RESPONSE header confirming the payment result. |
Returned header, response body hash, and final HTTP status |
Buyers sign locally; the seller does not receive the buyer’s private key. An agent therefore needs both a protocol implementation and a controlled signing boundary. A successful HTTP response is not, by itself, proof that the endpoint produced useful data or that the payment was reconciled correctly.

How do I freeze the exact SDK build before connecting an agent?
Start with a reproducible inventory. Do not approve an integration that resolves a floating dependency, uses an undocumented fork, or hides its facilitator and network assumptions.
- Record package identity. Capture every x402 package name, exact version, transitive lockfile hash, runtime version, and operating environment. Include the commit or release identifier for any locally built adapter.
- Record the integration surface. Note whether the client uses fetch, Express, Hono, MCP, or another adapter. Cloudflare’s Agents SDK documentation, for example, distinguishes
withX402,paidTool,x402-hono, andwithX402Client; the audit must identify which surface is actually running. - Record payment dependencies. Write down the facilitator URL, accepted schemes, accepted networks, token contract addresses, signer or wallet service, and the protected endpoint URL. A facilitator URL that is implicit in a default configuration is still a production dependency.
- Reproduce the build. Install from the lockfile in a clean environment and compare package checksums where your package manager supports them. Review release notes for changes to serialization, chain identifiers, header names, retry behavior, or signer adapters.
- Pin configuration. Make network, token, recipient, amount limits, expiry handling, and retry policy explicit in configuration or code. Fail closed when a required value is absent rather than accepting an SDK default that an operator cannot see.
Keep this inventory with the approval record. When a package, facilitator, chain, token contract, wallet adapter, or endpoint changes, treat the integration as a new build for audit purposes.
What should I verify in an HTTP 402 response?
Capture the unpaid response in a disposable environment and parse it as hostile input. The challenge describes what the server wants; it does not authorize the agent to pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCapture the complete challenge
Preserve the status code, all headers, body bytes, content type, request URL, HTTP method, and a timestamp. Decode each PaymentRequirements entry without discarding unknown fields. Keep the raw capture so a later investigation can distinguish a server change from a parser defect.
Validate the resource binding
- Compare the challenge’s resource URL with the URL the agent intended to call, including scheme, host, path, and any security-sensitive query parameters.
- Compare the declared HTTP method with the original method. A challenge for a read operation must not be reused for a state-changing request.
- Check that the description identifies the requested resource and does not silently substitute a different product, quota, or service.
- Reject a challenge that appears to have been rewritten by an unexpected proxy or redirect. If redirects are allowed, bind the final host and path to policy before signing.
Validate money, identity, and time
- Recipient: require an exact match to an allowlisted address or account. Reject unknown or newly changed recipients.
- Token: match the token contract address and, where relevant, its chain-specific deployment. A familiar symbol is not enough.
- Amount: compare the smallest-unit amount with the per-payment ceiling. Detect decimal or unit conversion errors before signing.
- Network and chain identifier: match the approved network exactly. A client that supports one network does not automatically support another.
- Scheme: require a scheme your signer, account type, client adapter, and facilitator all implement.
- Expiry and nonce: require a bounded validity period and replay protection appropriate to the scheme. Reject missing or stale values when your policy requires them.
Do not select the first entry merely because the SDK returns it first. Evaluate all entries, remove those outside policy or unsupported by the account, and select the least-privileged acceptable option. If none remains, stop without signing.

How do I verify x402 scheme and network compatibility?
Build a compatibility matrix for every pair the endpoint can advertise. x402 support is not a single yes-or-no feature: the client and facilitator must support the same scheme-and-network pair, and the account type must be able to sign that scheme.
| Matrix field | Record for each pair | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme | Exact scheme identifier from the challenge | The client adapter, signer, and facilitator all document support |
| Network | Exact chain or network identifier | The wallet is funded on that network and policy allows it |
| Token | Contract address and decimals used by the pair | The address is allowlisted and amount conversion is tested |
| Account type | Wallet or signer implementation | It can create the required PaymentPayload for the scheme |
| Facilitator capability | Verification and settlement support for the same pair | Both operations succeed in a controlled test |
| Environment | Testnet or mainnet identifier | Configuration cannot accidentally send test credentials to mainnet or vice versa |
For example, an EVM-capable client does not imply Solana support, and a facilitator that verifies one scheme does not necessarily settle another. Confirm the pair in the exact SDK and facilitator versions you froze; a general protocol statement is not a substitute for a version-specific capability check.

How do I keep an AI agent from overspending?
Put the signing boundary inside infrastructure controlled by the agent operator and enforce limits before a payload is created. The agent should be able to request a payment, not redefine the rules that authorize it.
Protect the signing boundary
- Keep private keys in the agent-controlled signer, wallet service, or hardware-backed environment. Never send a private key to the resource server, facilitator, prompt, tool output, or logging system.
- Expose a narrow signing API that accepts a validated payment intent rather than arbitrary serialized bytes.
- Separate development, testnet, and production accounts. Use a disposable account for challenge inspection and negative-path testing.
- Require an operator-controlled emergency disable switch that prevents new signatures without deleting evidence needed for reconciliation.
Apply layered spend policy
Use the smallest practical values for each limit and make the policy decision observable:
- Per-payment cap: maximum amount for one signed request.
- Cumulative cap: total amount an agent, task, tenant, or wallet may spend in a defined period such as a day.
- Recipient allowlist: exact addresses or accounts approved for the workload.
- Network allowlist: chains and environments the agent may use.
- Token allowlist: approved contract addresses, not just display symbols.
- Rate and concurrency limits: maximum paid attempts per task and simultaneous outstanding settlements.
- Manual escalation: a review path for an amount, recipient, or network outside the normal policy.
Some wallet and SDK surfaces expose per-payment caps, cumulative caps, and allowlists directly. If your chosen SDK does not, enforce equivalent controls in a signer service or policy gateway instead of assuming the absence of a setting means the risk is acceptable.

Use a testnet where the endpoint supports one, or a production-compatible wallet with a very small balance and strict caps. The objective is to prove that the SDK signs exactly what was approved and that every settlement can be reconciled.
- Make an unpaid request. Store the original URL, method, request body hash, and challenge capture.
- Run policy evaluation. Show which requirement was selected and why the alternatives were rejected. Abort if the resource, amount, recipient, token, scheme, network, expiry, or nonce differs from policy.
- Sign once. Compute a non-secret hash of the intended payload before handing it to the signer. Confirm that the signer receives the same intent and that no second signing occurs because of an automatic retry.
- Inspect the retry. Verify the original URL and method are unchanged and that the request carries the expected
PAYMENT-SIGNATUREheader. Check that redirects, middleware, and proxies do not replace the target or amount. - Observe verification. Record whether the resource server verified locally or called the facilitator, along with response status and error details.
- Observe settlement. Capture settlement status, transaction hash or other receipt reference, network, and block or confirmation information when available.
- Validate the response. Confirm the returned
PAYMENT-RESPONSEheader and bind it to the same request ID, challenge, signature hash, and settlement reference. - Verify the product result. Check that the body is the expected resource, not an error page, empty payload, stale cache, or transformed response. Record a response hash or business-level result identifier.
Keep a single audit record that links the request ID, challenge, selected requirement, policy decision, signature hash, facilitator response, settlement reference, returned header, and useful-data result. This record is what lets an operator reconcile a chain transaction when the HTTP response is delayed or lost.
Which failure and replay paths must an audit exercise?
Happy-path payment proves only that one combination worked. Production approval requires deliberate tests for malformed input, incompatible configuration, timeouts, and partial completion.
| Failure to inject | Expected safe behavior |
|---|---|
Missing or malformed PAYMENT-REQUIRED |
Do not sign; return a classified integration error and retain the raw response |
| Unsupported scheme or network | Reject the requirement without trying a different, unapproved chain |
| Wrong chain ID, token, recipient, or amount | Fail policy validation before the signer is called |
| Expired payload or reused nonce | Refuse the retry and obtain a fresh challenge only under an explicit retry rule |
| Invalid signature | Stop, surface the signer or serialization error, and do not loop indefinitely |
| Insufficient balance or insufficient token units | Fail without attempting a more expensive alternative or bypassing the cap |
| KYT or compliance flag | Hold the payment for operator review or deny it according to policy |
| Facilitator timeout before a result | Use bounded, idempotent status checking; do not blindly sign a second payment |
| Duplicate paid retry | Demonstrate idempotent handling and prove whether the server returns the original result |
| Server error after settlement | Reconcile the on-chain reference before any retry and define customer and operator recovery |
| Client timeout after server acceptance | Query settlement state using the stored request and payment identifiers |
Invalid signatures, wrong chain IDs, insufficient amounts, insufficient USDC, and KYT flags are documented causes of failed x402 payment attempts. Your test harness should assert that each produces a bounded, diagnosable outcome rather than an uncontrolled retry loop.

Define idempotency and reconciliation rules
Decide what identifies one economic operation: a request ID, nonce, idempotency key, or scheme-specific payment identifier. The rule must survive a process restart. If the client cannot determine whether settlement occurred, it should enter a reconciliation state, query the facilitator or chain, and involve an operator when the result remains ambiguous. Never solve uncertainty by automatically paying again.
How should I assess an x402 endpoint and facilitator?
Protocol compatibility is only one part of trust. Evaluate the endpoint, facilitator, and data product independently because a technically valid payment can still reach an unreliable or misleading service.
Endpoint checks
- Require HTTPS and verify certificate handling in the actual runtime, including proxy and redirect behavior.
- Identify who operates the host and how to contact them for payment or data incidents.
- Read the endpoint description and document data provenance, update cadence, retention, and rate-limit behavior.
- Observe reliability over multiple requests and time windows instead of trusting one successful call.
- Compare the response received by the agent with the upstream response when a proxy, gateway, or cache is involved. Record transformations that could alter data or payment headers.
- Evaluate output usefulness with domain-specific assertions. Payment authorization does not certify accuracy, freshness, or completeness.
Facilitator checks
- Confirm which scheme-and-network pairs it verifies and settles, and whether those capabilities match the frozen SDK version.
- Document authentication, rate limits, outage behavior, status-query support, and retention of settlement references.
- Test what happens when verification succeeds but settlement is delayed, rejected, or reported after the client timeout.
- Determine whether the facilitator can move funds only according to the client’s signed intent. The x402 Foundation describes this property as trust minimization: a facilitator or resource server should not move funds outside client intentions.
Automated scanners and trust scores can provide additional evidence, but they are informational. 402audit states that its automated security context cannot replace a professional security audit. Treat a score as a lead for investigation, never as an approval decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I separate protocol approval from vendor approval?
x402 is an open protocol. Optional products from vendors can supply SDKs, wallet controls, framework adapters, or facilitator services, but using one does not mean the protocol endorses that vendor.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Make separate decisions for:
- Protocol behavior: headers, requirement selection, signing, verification, settlement, and receipt handling.
- Dependency supply chain: package provenance, version pinning, transitive dependencies, maintenance, and release review.
- Wallet custody: where keys live, who can authorize signatures, backup and rotation procedures, and emergency shutdown.
- Facilitator: pair coverage, verification and settlement reliability, outage handling, and status reconciliation.
- Endpoint: ownership, HTTPS, resource binding, rate limits, data provenance, and output quality.
This separation prevents a familiar SDK name from masking an unreviewed wallet policy or endpoint. It also lets you replace a facilitator or endpoint without granting the replacement the same approval automatically.

What should a production approval record contain?
Keep a versioned record that another engineer can use to reproduce the decision:
- Exact SDK packages, versions, lockfile hash, runtime, adapter, and build identifier.
- Facilitator host, supported scheme-and-network pairs, endpoint URL, token contracts, and approved recipients.
- One or more raw 402 captures with decoded requirements and policy decisions.
- Signer architecture, key custody boundary, per-payment and cumulative caps, allowlists, and emergency disable procedure.
- Testnet or capped-wallet transaction references and returned payment-response headers.
- Negative-path results, including timeout, duplicate, expired, malformed, unsupported, and post-settlement cases.
- Idempotency key or nonce strategy and the procedure for reconciling a missing HTTP response.
- Endpoint ownership, HTTPS verification, reliability observations, data-provenance notes, and proxy behavior.
- Approval owner, review date, change triggers, and the exact conditions that require reapproval.
Store secrets separately from this record. Evidence should prove what happened without becoming a new source of signing authority.
When is an x402 agent integration ready for mainnet?
Approve mainnet only when the exact build has passed the compatibility, policy, settlement, and operational checks above. A concise go/no-go review should answer yes to every item:

- Every advertised scheme-and-network option maps to a tested client, signer, and facilitator capability.
- 402 requirements are validated against resource, method, amount, token, recipient, network, scheme, expiry, and nonce policy.
- Private keys remain inside the controlled signer boundary, and spend limits and allowlists are enforced before signing.
- The paid retry preserves the approved URL, method, and amount and produces a traceable receipt.
- Negative paths terminate safely, retries are bounded, and duplicate or ambiguous settlements are reconciled idempotently.
- The endpoint and facilitator have independently passed provenance, HTTPS, reliability, outage, and output-quality review.
- An operator can disable new payments and investigate a settlement without needing the agent to cooperate.
If any answer is no, keep the integration on testnet or disabled. The objective is not merely to make an agent pay; it is to make every payment intentional, bounded, attributable, and recoverable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I approve one x402 endpoint while rejecting another?
Yes. Treat the host, path, recipient, token contract, and facilitator route as policy-scoped identities. A passing review for one endpoint does not authorize a redirect, proxy alias, or newly advertised recipient elsewhere.
How often should an x402 integration be re-audited?
Re-audit whenever the SDK or lockfile changes, the signer or wallet policy changes, the facilitator changes, a token contract or network is added, or the endpoint changes its challenge format. Also schedule periodic reviews so reliability and ownership assumptions do not age unnoticed.
What should payment logs deliberately leave out?
Exclude private keys, seed phrases, bearer credentials, and reusable signatures. Keep hashes, identifiers, policy results, and settlement references instead, with redaction applied before logs enter shared observability systems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a successful x402 payment prove that the returned data is trustworthy?
No. Payment confirms the protocol exchange and settlement result, not the provider’s data quality. Use separate checks for provenance, freshness, schema, usefulness, and behavior when the endpoint returns incomplete or transformed data.
