Audit AI dependencies by building a complete inventory of the software and artifacts used to train and serve models, matching their exact versions to vulnerability advisories, verifying their source and integrity, and prioritizing findings by whether they are exploitable and reachable in your environment. Keep an SBOM and an AI-BOM with each release, then rescan as code, advisories, images, and deployed artifacts change. A package scan alone is not enough: models, datasets, plugins, training pipelines, registries, and unsafe loading paths also belong in scope.

What does an AI dependency audit need to cover?

An AI dependency audit checks known vulnerabilities and trust risks across the components that build, train, package, and run an AI system. That includes familiar software dependencies, but also model weights, datasets, adapters, plugins, container images, registries, pipelines, and the places those artifacts execute.

The distinction matters because an ordinary software inventory can miss AI-specific inputs and provenance. A model file may be downloaded separately from the application package; a training pipeline can rely on libraries that never appear in the serving image; and a notebook may introduce an artifact later copied into production. A useful audit follows the artifact and its dependencies across these boundaries rather than treating the model as a single opaque file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep three questions separate:

  • Is a known vulnerability present? Match identified components and versions against CVE/NVD, OSV, and relevant vendor advisories.
  • Can it matter here? Consider exploitability, affected functionality, reachability, exposure, privilege, and whether the component runs in production.
  • Can you trust this artifact? Verify its approved source, digest, signature, and provenance, and check whether the model or serialized object can enter an unsafe loading path.

A clean result for one question does not settle the others. For example, an artifact can have no matched advisory and still lack trustworthy provenance; conversely, a vulnerable library may be present but not reachable in a particular deployment.

Which components and boundaries should you include?

Start with the full development-to-production path, not just the final inference container. Record where code and artifacts originate, where they are transformed, and where they can be loaded or executed.

Training and development

  • Training and inference code, notebooks, build scripts, and pipeline definitions.
  • Direct and transitive packages, frameworks, training libraries, plugins, and command-line tools.
  • Datasets, pretrained weights, adapters, and any serialized objects used during training, evaluation, or fine-tuning.
  • CI runners and other environments that install dependencies or handle model files.

Release and operation

  • Model registries and other artifact stores, including the source registry for each dependency.
  • Container images and the software and model artifacts bundled into them.
  • Production hosts, serving runtimes, and other locations where components execute.
  • Any route by which an untrusted or externally supplied model file or serialized object can reach a loader.

Draw trust boundaries around downloads, uploads, registry promotion, build steps, and deployment. For each boundary, identify who can supply an artifact, what checks run before it crosses, and whether the receiving process has privileges that would make a compromise more serious. That map helps distinguish a package installed only in an isolated development environment from a component loaded by an internet-facing, privileged production service.

How do you build a useful inventory?

Give every software and AI artifact a stable identity, an exact version or digest, an owner, a source, and a location. Capture direct and transitive dependencies; recording only the top-level package name cannot show what else is pulled in or which exact artifact was reviewed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical inventory record should include:

  • Identity: package or artifact name, ecosystem, exact version, and whether it is a direct or transitive dependency.
  • Ownership and origin: responsible team or owner, source registry, approved-source status, and build or training provenance.
  • Integrity: cryptographic digest, signature status, and available attestation or provenance record.
  • AI-specific details: model or dataset identity, model format, weights or adapter details, and associated training libraries, frameworks, and pipelines.
  • Deployment context: runtime image, execution or storage location, and whether it is used in training, testing, inference, or more than one stage.
  • Other required metadata: license and the release or build to which the record belongs.

Version and digest answer different questions. The version identifies the declared release; the digest distinguishes the precise bytes reviewed. Retain both when available, especially where an artifact can be rebuilt, mirrored, or replaced without changing its displayed name.

Model provenance needs more than the name of the framework that loaded the weights. Record the components and pipeline involved in producing or adapting the model. NIST SP 800-218A (2024) calls for tracking provenance for AI models and components, including training libraries, frameworks, and pipelines. That makes provenance part of the inventory, not an optional note added after an incident.

What are SBOMs and AI-BOMs, and how should you use them?

A software bill of materials (SBOM) is a machine-readable inventory of software components. An AI bill of materials (AI-BOM) supplements that view with AI-related artifacts and context, such as model weights, datasets, adapters, and the libraries, frameworks, and pipelines used to produce or handle them.

Use the records to make releases reviewable and changes visible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Generate machine-readable SBOM and AI-BOM records for each release or other clearly defined artifact set.
  2. Attach the records to that release so teams can identify what was actually shipped, rather than relying on a current inventory that may have changed.
  3. Include the AI artifacts and production context relevant to the release, not just conventional package dependencies.
  4. Compare changes in pull requests and deployment events. Review additions, removals, version changes, and changes in artifact origin or provenance.
  5. Retain the records and their associated attestations so the inventory can be checked later against newly disclosed advisories or a deployed artifact.

SPDX and CycloneDX are formats to evaluate when choosing an implementation; check that the selected generator and consumers preserve the fields your process needs, including AI-specific artifacts and provenance. CISA and G7 partners’ 2025 AI SBOM guidance says AI systems need supplemental SBOM elements beyond general software inventories. A software-only record that omits models or datasets should not be treated as a complete AI inventory.

OWASP AISVS control C06 covers malicious-code scanning, approved sources, integrity verification, signed AI-BOMs, and completeness checks. Treat those as related controls: a bill of materials tells you what was declared, while scanning, verification, and signatures help establish whether the artifact is acceptable and whether the record can be trusted.

How do you check components against known vulnerabilities?

Correlate each inventoried component with vulnerability information using its identity and exact version. Use CVE/NVD, OSV, and vendor advisories as relevant to the ecosystem, then record enough context to make a decision rather than treating a scanner alert as an automatic verdict.

  1. Normalize identity. Confirm the package or artifact name and ecosystem so similarly named components are not confused.
  2. Match the version. Compare the exact installed version with affected and fixed-version information in the advisory. Do not infer exposure from a package name alone.
  3. Capture the finding. Record the advisory identifier, source, affected component and version, available fixed version, and exploit status where stated.
  4. Connect it to behavior. Determine whether the affected function is used, whether the component is reachable from an entry point, and whether it executes in production or only in another stage.
  5. Reconcile sources. Check vendor advisories when the generic record does not resolve a version, affected function, or fix for the component you actually use.

Keep the advisory information attached to the component record or finding. Vulnerability status and fixed versions can change, so a decision should be traceable to the source and version considered when it was made. Do not treat a scanner’s severity label as a complete assessment: severity is an input to triage, not a substitute for deployment context.

How should you prioritize findings?

Rank findings by the combination of technical severity and real exposure. In particular, investigate internet-facing, privileged, exploitable, reachable components and unsafe model-loading paths first; a less exposed component may still warrant action, but should not automatically outrank a reachable flaw in a critical service.

For each finding, ask:

  • Is there evidence that the vulnerability is exploitable, and is there a fixed version or mitigation?
  • Does the affected function run in this system, or is it unreachable in the relevant configuration?
  • Is the component exposed to untrusted input or an internet-facing entry point?
  • What privileges does the process have, and what could an attacker affect if exploitation succeeded?
  • Can untrusted model files or serialized objects reach a loader, and what authority does that loader have?
  • Is the component present in production, or only in a development, training, or test environment?

Document the evidence behind the decision, including affected functions and reachability, not just a severity score. If a finding cannot be fixed immediately, make the exception explicit: name an owner, state the reason and compensating decision, and set an expiry date. An exception without an owner or expiry is difficult to review and easy to leave in place indefinitely.

How do you verify model and package integrity?

Accept dependencies only from approved sources and verify the artifact you receive against a known digest or signature. Require provenance or attestations where policy calls for them, and reject artifacts with missing or invalid provenance according to that policy.

Apply the same logic to a model registry as to a package registry: establish which sources are trusted, control which artifacts may be promoted, and preserve the identity of what was approved. A model name or version label alone does not prove that the downloaded file is the one reviewed. Record the digest and verification result alongside the inventory and release record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signatures, attestations, and AI-BOMs serve related but distinct roles. A signature can help verify that a record or artifact came from an expected signer and was not altered; provenance describes how an artifact was produced; an AI-BOM describes included components. A signature does not make an unsafe artifact safe, and a complete inventory does not by itself prove that its contents came from a trusted source.

Define policy for failures before they occur. Decide which missing or invalid checks block a build or promotion, who can approve an exception, and how that exception expires. OWASP AISVS C06 specifically includes approved sources, integrity verification, signed AI-BOMs, malicious-code scanning, and completeness checks, making those useful control areas for a policy gate.

How do you remediate a vulnerable dependency?

Prefer upgrading to a fixed version or replacing the affected component. If the issue involves a model or other artifact, rebuild or reacquire it from a trusted source as appropriate, then verify and rescan the result before release.

  1. Identify the affected direct or transitive component, the vulnerable version, and the advisory’s fixed version or recommended mitigation.
  2. Assess where it is used and what change could affect training, inference, or another dependent component.
  3. Upgrade, replace, or rebuild from an approved source; update pins and associated artifact records to match the reviewed result.
  4. Run the relevant tests and rescan the software inventory, container image, and model or artifact registry entries affected by the change.
  5. Generate or update the release’s SBOM and AI-BOM, verify integrity and provenance, and retain the records with the release.
  6. If immediate remediation is not possible, document an owned, time-limited exception and revisit it before its expiry.

Do not close a finding merely because a dependency declaration changed. Confirm that the built and deployed artifact contains the intended version, that the new inventory reflects it, and that the verification checks pass. For a rebuilt artifact, preserve the new digest and provenance so the remediation can be distinguished from the prior release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you keep the audit current?

Make inventory and vulnerability checks part of the release lifecycle, then rescan deployed images and model registries as advisories and artifacts change. A one-time audit describes a point in time; it cannot account for a new disclosure, a promoted model, or a dependency drift after deployment.

  • Run software composition analysis and inventory jobs in CI/CD.
  • Diff SBOM and AI-BOM records in pull requests and deployment events so changes receive review.
  • Gate releases on the approved-source, integrity, provenance, completeness, and vulnerability policies your organization has set.
  • Rescan images and model registries, and monitor advisory and artifact drift.
  • Maintain a rollback path to a known-good version so a problematic release can be replaced while remediation proceeds.

Assign responsibility for reviewing findings and exceptions, and make the release record show what was scanned and verified. NIST’s Secure Software Development Framework (SP 800-218, 2022) says: “Following the SSDF practices should help software producers reduce the number of vulnerabilities in released software, mitigate the potential impact of the exploitation of undetected or unaddressed vulnerabilities, and address the root causes of vulnerabilities to prevent future recurrences.” For an AI team, that principle applies to the development and release process as well as to the dependency list.

What should you evaluate in an audit tool?

Choose tooling by the coverage and evidence it produces, not only by the number of alerts. A tool that scans packages but cannot represent AI artifacts, deployment context, or integrity checks leaves important parts of this audit to manual work.

Evaluation area What to verify
Ecosystem and ML-package coverage Can it identify the package ecosystems, frameworks, training libraries, and transitive dependencies used by your projects?
Vulnerability intelligence Can findings be correlated with CVE/NVD, OSV, and vendor advisories, with affected and fixed versions recorded?
Reachability and triage context Can reviewers add or use information about affected functions, reachability, exploit status, exposure, and production use?
SBOM and AI-BOM support Can it generate or consume machine-readable records, including your selected SPDX or CycloneDX workflow and supplemental AI elements?
Model and registry controls Can it inventory or scan model files and registries, enforce approved sources, and surface integrity or provenance failures?
Provenance and signatures Can it verify the attestations, signatures, and signed AI-BOMs required by your policy?
CI/CD and remediation Can it run in your build and deployment process, enforce release gates, and give enough information to support an upgrade or replacement?
Operations Does its privacy and deployment model suit your environment, and can your team rescan artifacts, monitor drift, and roll back to a known-good release?
Cost and operating effort What ongoing effort is needed to configure coverage, review findings, maintain integrations, and operate the chosen deployment model?

Validate these capabilities against a representative project that includes both conventional dependencies and the model and dataset artifacts your teams use. Confirm that the generated record is complete enough for your release process, that a known test finding can be traced to its source and version, and that a policy failure produces the expected review or block. Do not assume that a product supports a specific format, registry, or model-file check unless its current documentation and your own configuration confirm it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a complete audit outcome look like?

A useful audit leaves the team with a reproducible account of what is present, why it is accepted, and what remains unresolved. The release should have machine-readable inventories, vulnerability findings linked to exact component versions, integrity and provenance results, and documented decisions for exceptions.

Before approving a release, check that the inventory covers direct and transitive packages as well as model-related artifacts; findings have been assessed for exploitability and reachability; artifacts came from approved sources and passed required verification; and the release has been rescanned after remediation. For deployed systems, ensure the inventory remains tied to the artifact actually running and that monitoring and rollback are part of operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dependency scan prove that a model is safe?

No. A scan can identify known issues within the components and files it recognizes, but it cannot establish that a model behaves safely or that every risk is known. Treat scanning as one control alongside provenance, integrity verification, review, and runtime safeguards.

What should I do if a package has no CVE entry?

Record the component and version anyway, verify its source and provenance, and retain it in the SBOM or AI-BOM. An absent advisory match means no known match was found in the sources checked; it is not proof that the component is vulnerability-free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a model or dataset have its own inventory entry?

Yes. Track it as an artifact with an identity, source, digest where available, owner, and relevant provenance, and connect it to the release and pipeline that use it. This makes later changes or advisory reviews traceable even when the artifact is not a conventional software package.

How do I handle an advisory when there is no fixed version yet?

Record the advisory and the affected deployment context, then document any mitigation or exposure-reduction decision with an owner and review date. Recheck the advisory and the artifact as guidance changes rather than treating the initial assessment as permanent.
