To assess data-center storage demand, look for several signals to agree: storage suppliers shipping more capacity, data-center sales or orders growing, facilities being built and powered, and that demand turning into healthy margins and cash flow. No single figure proves that the storage market is growing—or that a particular storage stock is a good buy.
The distinction matters: more data created does not automatically mean more storage purchased, and more storage shipped does not automatically mean more profit for a supplier. Use the steps below to separate those questions before forming an investment view.
What evidence shows that storage demand is actually growing?
Start with storage suppliers’ reported shipments, then check whether their customer and financial disclosures support the same interpretation. Each measure answers a different question:
- Exabytes shipped: How much storage capacity did the company ship?
- Drive units: How many physical drives did it ship?
- Revenue and average selling price: What did customers spend, and how much may reflect price or product mix?
- End-market disclosures: Did cloud or data-center sales grow, or did growth come from other businesses?
- Margins and cash flow: Did the supplier convert sales into better economics?
These indicators are strongest when they move together over multiple reporting periods. A one-quarter jump can reflect customer inventory restocking, order timing, or a shift to higher-capacity products rather than a durable change in underlying demand.

Capacity shipped is not the same as drives shipped
Exabytes measure capacity; units measure physical drives. Capacity can rise faster than unit volume when buyers move to larger drives. Seagate reported 789 exabytes of HDD capacity shipped in FY2026, a company-specific annual measure—not a total for the global storage market. The company also described sustained nearline demand from global cloud customers. Treat that commentary as evidence about Seagate’s business and management’s view, not as an independent industry census.
Revenue needs a price-and-mix check
Western Digital reported 65% growth in cloud revenue in FY2025. It attributed the increase primarily to higher unit shipments of high-capacity enterprise products and higher average selling prices, with product mix shifting toward higher-capacity drives. That combination supports a cloud-demand interpretation, but it also shows why revenue alone is not a pure volume measure: units, price, and mix can all affect the result.
Read segment tables alongside management’s explanation. Separate cloud and data-center sales from client and consumer businesses where the company provides that detail. Compare year-over-year and sequential results, and note whether the fiscal year differs from the calendar year.
How do data-center construction and power conditions fit in?
Facility indicators can corroborate whether infrastructure is being deployed, but they do not measure storage purchases. In H1 2025, CBRE Research reported 1.6% primary-market vacancy in North America and said 74.3% of under-construction capacity in those markets was preleased. The figures describe a particular geography and period, not storage demand directly.

Vacancy, net absorption, preleasing, construction pipelines, and power availability help test whether data-center space is opening up or constrained. CBRE’s report also identified power availability and infrastructure delivery timelines as decisive factors in site selection, leasing, and pricing. A customer may want more capacity but be unable to deploy it until power and facilities are available; tight leasing conditions therefore do not guarantee that storage shipments will rise on the same schedule.
Which storage suppliers benefit from the demand?
Do not assume every storage company sells the same product into the same workload. Compare the role its technology plays, the economics it offers customers, and the portion of its business exposed to data centers.
| Supplier type | Questions to investigate | What the evidence can establish |
|---|---|---|
| HDD-oriented suppliers | Are capacity and unit shipments rising? Is demand coming from cloud or enterprise nearline products? How do capacity, power, and cost per usable terabyte compare with alternatives? | Company shipment and end-market disclosures can show performance in that supplier’s HDD business; they do not establish total market demand. |
| SSD and all-flash suppliers | Which workloads need low latency or performance? What are the system’s capacity, power, space, and total-cost trade-offs? | Company strategy can show where a supplier hopes to compete, not that customers have broadly replaced HDDs. |
| Storage-system suppliers | Are customers buying complete systems or components? Do rising sales translate into margin and cash generation after costs and working capital? | Company results can reveal sales and financial conversion, but a system vendor’s revenue is not a direct measure of storage-media shipments. |
| Broader data-center suppliers | How much revenue is tied to data-center deployments, and how sensitive are results to order timing, components, and customer projects? | Growth can indicate deployment activity while leaving the level of storage demand unclear. |
HDDs remain a mass-capacity option, while flash suppliers describe extending into workloads historically served by disk. Pure Storage, for example, presents all-flash expansion into those use cases as part of its strategy and identifies cloud-native applications and AI adoption as storage trends. That is evidence of a competitive direction, not neutral proof that flash will broadly displace HDDs. Compare workload, access performance, total cost, energy use, and space needs rather than treating all storage demand as interchangeable.
Does supplier growth translate into an attractive business?
Demand is only one part of an investment case. Check whether it improves the company’s economics and whether those economics can persist.

Margins, cash generation, and investment
Follow revenue growth into gross margin, cash from operations, capital spending, and inventory. A supplier can ship more exabytes without a proportional rise in drive units, revenue, or profit. A systems company can report strong sales while making less on each dollar of revenue or tying up cash in inventory and receivables.
Super Micro Computer reported FY2026 net sales growth of 77.8% year over year, which it attributed primarily to fulfilling and shipping orders supporting customers’ data-center deployments. Its gross margin fell from 11.1% to 10.8%. That example shows why a headline growth rate is not enough: examine the profitability and cash consequences of the growth as well as the sales figure.
Customer concentration and bargaining power
Find the largest customers’ share of revenue and look for disclosure about dependence on cloud buyers. Western Digital reported that its ten largest customers represented 68% of FY2025 net revenue. Concentration can make reported demand sensitive to a small number of purchasing decisions, order changes, and negotiations.
Supply, inventory, and order timing
Read risk disclosures for supplier or component dependence, inventory corrections, delayed deployments, cancellations, and large orders. Storage demand can strengthen after customers work through excess inventory, then weaken while they absorb prior purchases. Compare sequential shipment changes with longer-term trends and customer commentary so a cycle does not get mistaken for a permanent shift.

How should you weigh AI and survey claims?
AI may increase demand for storage, but broad forecasts or survey responses are not proof of realized purchases. Seagate’s 2025 company report said 94.5% of surveyed respondents reported increasing data-storage needs, and 97% anticipated that AI growth would further affect storage demand. These are company-published survey results; without complete methodology and sample details, do not generalize them into independently verified industry-wide measurements.
Seagate executive Jason Feist, senior vice president of cloud marketing, said: “Data centers are under intense scrutiny – not only because they support modern AI workloads, but because they are becoming one of the most energy-intensive sectors of the digital economy.” This is the executive’s company viewpoint. Treat energy use as a factor to investigate—alongside power delivery, cooling, and customer workload needs—not as a standalone measure of storage purchases.
A practical checklist before evaluating a storage stock
- Set the comparison period and geography. Write down the reporting periods, regions, and fiscal-year definitions. Do not compare a fiscal-year supplier result with a calendar-year facility statistic as though they cover the same period.
- Read at least two storage suppliers’ filings. Record capacity shipped, unit shipments, cloud or data-center revenue, average selling price or product mix, margin, and customer concentration where disclosed.
- Test the shipment story against facility indicators. Compare reported supplier trends with construction, vacancy, preleasing, absorption, and power conditions in the relevant market and period.
- Map companies to workloads. Identify whether each supplier serves mass capacity, performance-sensitive storage, complete systems, or a broader data-center market. Compare cost per usable terabyte, access needs, power, and space.
- Trace demand into financial results. Review realized revenue, gross margin, cash from operations, capital spending, and inventory. Look for whether capacity additions and investment seem sustainable.
- Stress-test the risks. Ask what happens if major customers delay orders, inventory rises, prices or mix weaken, components become scarce, or power constraints postpone deployments.
What the available measures cannot tell you
The cited company filings and facility indicators do not establish one independent, current global total for storage demand across HDDs, SSDs, and storage systems. One supplier’s shipment total is not a global market forecast, and facility leasing data is an indirect proxy. These figures also cannot establish future demand, a company’s eventual market share, its valuation, or whether its stock suits your circumstances. Use the signals to build and challenge a company-specific view, not as a substitute for investment analysis.
