Ask the chatbot for a memory-only inventory, not a general description of your current conversation. Require it to label every item as saved memory, retrieved past-chat context, custom instruction, file or connected-app source, or inference. Then compare its answer with the service’s memory, personalization, or activity controls. This two-part check matters because a fluent answer can come from the current chat or an inference rather than a detail stored for future use. It also helps you correct outdated facts, remove unwanted personalization, and avoid assuming that deleting one chat erased every copy.
What should I ask an AI chatbot to reveal?
Use a prompt that limits the answer to information the service may carry into later chats and makes the source of each item explicit. Copy this version into a new conversation:
What do you remember about me? List only information you may carry into future chats. For every item, label it as (1) saved memory, (2) retrieved past-chat context, (3) custom instruction, (4) file or connected-app source, or (5) inference. State what source supports it, identify uncertainty, and tell me how to correct or delete it.

The wording separates five different mechanisms that are often collapsed into the word “memory.” A chatbot can use a saved profile fact, retrieve a relevant old conversation, follow a custom instruction, read a file or connected service, or infer something from what you just wrote. Only the first four are evidence of a retained source, and even those can have different controls.

Ask for evidence, not confidence
Add this follow-up when an item affects privacy or accuracy: “Quote or cite the supporting text when available. If you cannot identify a source, mark the item as an inference and give your confidence as low, medium, or high.” A confident sentence is not proof that the fact is permanently stored. Asking for a source also exposes cases where the model is answering from the current thread.
Keep the inventory narrow
Do not ask, “Tell me everything you know about me.” That can invite a broad profile assembled from the active conversation. “List only information you may carry into future chats” gives you a more useful audit and makes it easier to compare the result with a settings page.
What can an AI chatbot’s answer actually prove?
It is an inspection aid, not a complete data export. OpenAI describes ChatGPT’s memory summary as a high-level view that does not necessarily include every detail or source that Memory can reference. Similar limits apply when a service summarizes retrieved conversations rather than displaying the underlying records.

- Retrieved past-chat context: text searched from earlier conversations for the current response; it may not be a separately saved memory.
- Custom instruction: a standing instruction you entered in a profile or settings area.
- File or connected-app source: information available through an uploaded document, library, or linked service.
- Inference: a conclusion generated from clues, including clues in the current conversation. It can be wrong and may not be stored anywhere.
After the chat response, open the product’s management screen and check the actual entry, source, or activity record. If the service cannot show a source, treat the statement as unverified rather than as proof of retention.
How do I perform a reliable memory audit?
Run the audit in a fresh conversation, record each item, and verify it in the service controls. The following sequence works across the major assistants.
- Choose a safe session. For sensitive material, start with Temporary Chat or another unpersonalized mode, or turn off the relevant memory and personalization controls before typing details.
- Send the memory-only prompt. Require the five labels, supporting source, uncertainty, and correction or deletion instructions.
- Separate facts from assumptions. Ask a second question: “Which items are stored or retrieved, and which are only inferences from this conversation?”
- Build an action list. Mark every item correct, outdated, wrong, or do not use.
- Verify in settings. Open the memory, personalization, custom-instruction, library, or activity screen and look for the corresponding entry.
- Correct or delete at the source. Change the saved item, remove the originating chat or file, and disconnect an app when those sources are part of the unwanted profile.
- Test in a new chat. Ask whether the old value is still being used. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that every backend copy has disappeared immediately.
Keep a dated copy of the inventory if the information affects an account, workplace, health decision, or legal matter. The chatbot’s wording can change from one run to the next, while the settings page provides the more stable record.
How do I ask ChatGPT what it remembers about me?
In ChatGPT, ask “What do you remember about me?” and then compare the answer with Settings → Personalization → Memory. Depending on the account and feature rollout, the page can show controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.

Audit the response
- Open a new chat and paste the five-label memory prompt.
- Ask ChatGPT to identify the source for each item and distinguish saved memory from chat-history retrieval and inference.
- Open Settings → Personalization → Memory and compare the listed memories or summary with the chat answer.
- Check any displayed source information, files in Library, custom instructions, or connected-app permissions that could explain an item.
ChatGPT can use saved memories, relevant chat history, custom instructions, Library files, or connected-app content, subject to account and feature availability. The chat answer may therefore mention a fact that is retrievable without being a separately saved memory.
Delete both a saved memory and its source when necessary
ChatGPT keeps saved memories separately from chat history. Deleting the original conversation does not automatically delete a separate saved memory. For full removal, delete the saved memory and the chat or other source where the information appears; remove a relevant file and disconnect a connected app if either supplied the data.
OpenAI says deletion updates can take time and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention period is a service statement about logs, not a promise that the item will remain available for personalization.
Use Temporary Chat for a non-personalized conversation
Select Temporary Chat before starting a conversation that should not create or update personalization memory. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not create or update memories. Its documentation also says they do not appear in history or help improve models; availability and exact labels can vary by account.

Claude can search previous conversations when you ask it to, and it may show retrieved chats as citations when available. Use a prompt such as: “Search my previous conversations and list the personal facts or preferences you are using for this answer. Separate quoted or cited information from your inference.”
Check the topics Claude stores
Claude organizes memory into topics such as role, projects, people and places, communication preferences, technical preferences, and ongoing work. Open Settings → Your Claude → Manage; some accounts may show an older Memory location. Inspect the Topics list, edit an entry, or delete it. You can also ask Claude in chat to change a memory directly.
Account for plan and workspace limits
Memory availability depends on plan and workspace. Anthropic says sensitive topics are not stored by default, with an optional setting for users who choose to include them. If a control or topic list is missing, check whether your plan, organization workspace, or administrator policy supports it before concluding that no personalization exists.

How do I check what Gemini uses for personalization?
Gemini’s documented personalization uses memory of past Gemini chats. Ask: “What information from my past Gemini chats are you using to personalize this response? Separate remembered details from assumptions.” Then verify the result in Gemini’s settings and activity records.
Review Personal Intelligence and activity
- On the web, open Settings & help → Personal Intelligence.
- Turn memory on or off there, according to your preference.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity to find and delete past chats.
- After deletion, allow for a short delay before judging whether those chats have stopped being used for personalization.
Check eligibility before troubleshooting
Google’s documented eligibility requires a personal Google Account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on. The feature is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts and does not apply to some Gemini features. These account restrictions can explain why the assistant gives a different answer or why a control is absent.
What are the practical differences between ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?
All three services can respond to a direct audit prompt, but they expose different evidence and controls. Labels, plan availability, region, account type, platform, and workspace policy can change over time.

How do I correct a wrong or outdated memory?
Correction and deletion are separate actions. Give the assistant an exact replacement, then confirm that the stored item and the originating source have been handled.
Use an unambiguous replacement
Write: “Replace ‘I live in Boston’ with ‘I live in Chicago; treat the old location as deleted.’ Do not use the old location in future chats.” For a preference, include its scope: “Use metric units for cooking questions, but do not apply that preference to engineering work.” Ask the chatbot to repeat the final value and label it as a saved-memory change rather than an inference.

Confirm in the management screen
Reopen the memory or topic manager and check the edited entry. If the service offers a source or citation, verify that the old wording is not still present in the linked conversation, file, or app. A corrected summary in chat without a matching settings entry should be treated as unconfirmed.
Remove all relevant sources
When the goal is full removal, delete the originating conversation, file, or activity record as well as the saved item. Disconnect a connected app that continues to expose the same information. On ChatGPT in particular, deleting only the chat can leave a separately saved memory.

How do I remove information without accidentally adding more?
Do not paste a sensitive fact merely to test whether it is remembered. The test itself can become conversation content or a memory candidate. Start in Temporary Chat or turn off the relevant memory or personalization control, and use a neutral description such as “the old location” when possible.
- Use a fresh, unpersonalized session for sensitive audits.
- Do not upload identity documents, health records, financial details, or private correspondence just to see whether the assistant can remember them.
- Review custom instructions and connected-app permissions, not only the visible memory list.
- Remember that availability and labels can differ by vendor, plan, region, account, platform, and workspace.
For a workplace account, ask the administrator which retention and connected-service policies apply. A personal setting may not override an organization’s controls.

What should I do if the chatbot gives contradictory answers?
Contradictions usually mean the response combined different sources or made an inference. Do not decide which sentence is “the memory” from wording alone; classify each statement and check the source.
If an old fact appears after deletion
Check for a separate saved memory, another conversation containing the fact, a file or connected app, and a custom instruction. Delete or disconnect each applicable source, then allow for the service’s stated processing delay and test again in a new chat.
If the assistant says it remembers something that is not listed
Ask it to identify the exact source and label the claim as retrieved context or inference if no managed entry exists. A high-level summary may omit details, so absence from that summary is not proof that no source can be referenced.
If a control is missing
Check your account type, plan, region, app version, and workspace policy. Gemini’s documented exclusions for work, school, and supervised accounts and Claude’s plan or workspace dependency are examples of eligibility limits that can change what you see.
How can I make the audit repeatable?
Use the same prompt and a simple record each time you review personalization. This makes changes easier to spot without repeatedly disclosing private facts.

- Date and account: record the service, account type, and whether the session was temporary.
- Item: copy the assistant’s wording without adding interpretation.
- Label: saved memory, retrieved past-chat context, custom instruction, file or connected-app source, or inference.
- Source: note the displayed memory entry, conversation, file, or citation.
- Action: correct, delete, retain, or do not use.
- Verification: record what the settings page and a new-chat test showed.
Run the review after a major change of job, location, project, household, or communication preference. Keep the record itself free of unnecessary sensitive details.
What are the limits of a chatbot memory audit?
No vendor in the documented material publishes a general percentage for memory accuracy or completeness. The practical limits are therefore qualitative: summaries can omit sources, retrieval can be separate from saved memory, and inference can look like recollection.
Use the chatbot’s answer to discover what to inspect, not to certify that the account contains no other information. The service’s memory manager, activity history, file library, custom instructions, and connected-app controls are the places where deletion and correction actions take effect.
