Do not rely on YouTube to preserve one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a dependable copy of your own sleep sounds stream, record it locally while it broadcasts; if you also want YouTube replays, end and restart the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.
Choose what you need to preserve
There are two separate goals: giving viewers access to a replay on YouTube, and keeping a creator-controlled copy of the broadcast. A YouTube replay is convenient, but the platform warns that a broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. A local recording avoids depending on that archive becoming available, provided your recording setup and storage keep working.
This workflow is for your own stream and audio that you own or are authorized to use. YouTube’s creator download workflow does not establish permission to copy someone else’s stream; it is for videos uploaded by the signed-in creator.
Set up a local recording
Prepare storage
Choose a disk with enough free space for the planned recording duration and how long you intend to retain the files. The space required depends on your actual recording settings; there is no defensible universal per-hour estimate for this use case. If the archive matters, plan a copy on separate physical storage as well.

Configure OBS
OBS’s official Help Portal points creators to local recording settings and a recording guide. Use Simple output mode and its recording presets as a starting point; OBS recommends a hardware encoder if one is available. Record a short test, then open and play the resulting file before depending on the setup for an overnight or longer session.
Record while streaming
- Check that the destination disk has sufficient free space and that the test recording plays correctly.
- Start the local recording and the YouTube broadcast. Confirm OBS shows that recording is active.
- During the stream, monitor the recording status, available disk space, and stream health. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- When recording segments, verify each saved file and preserve it on the recording disk. Copy important files to separate storage.
YouTube also recommends recording a local archive as a backup to its live archive: Archive live streams.

Make YouTube replays from shorter broadcasts
If separate replays on YouTube matter, plan to end each broadcast before it passes the 12-hour threshold, then start a new one. That approach follows YouTube’s stated archive limit, but it is not a guarantee that every broadcast or account will produce a replay. The resulting replays are separate broadcast segments, not one uninterrupted archive.
- Keep the local recording running or create sequential local files, depending on what your recording setup supports.
- End the current YouTube broadcast before it reaches 12 hours.
- Allow YouTube time to process the completed broadcast, then confirm the replay is available.
- Start a new broadcast and verify that both the new local recording and the stream are active.
- Check the local files on both sides of the handoff to confirm there is no gap or damaged segment.
The exact handoff behavior depends on your capture setup. YouTube’s API documentation says a completed broadcast is converted into a video, which is not available immediately; processing delay relates to the broadcast’s actual length. See LiveBroadcasts | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Understand DVR, archives, and downloads
DVR is for viewers during a live broadcast
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume while the broadcast is live; it is not a saved replay. On very long streams, DVR may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
YouTube’s archive is not assured for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat the platform archive as a convenient replay for shorter broadcasts, not as the only preservation copy for a continuous stream. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends a local backup.

Studio downloads are a secondary retrieval route
YouTube Studio’s documented creator download is an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on video size. Do not assume a downloaded Studio copy matches the quality of your original local recording.
