Adjust PS5 headset volume from Settings > Sound > Volume > Headphones, or open the Control Center with the PS button and choose Sound. Set the microphone in the Control Center’s Mic card, selecting the correct input and calibrating until the meter reaches Good. Headphone 3D Audio is under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), where you can create a hearing-based profile or choose one of five presets. USB headsets and compatible 3.5 mm stereo headsets can use PS5 3D Audio; direct Bluetooth headsets are not supported.
The sections below explain every relevant control, how to eliminate echo and wireless skipping, and what changes when you use a PULSE 3D headset by wireless adaptor or audio cable.
How do I turn up my PS5 headset volume?
Use the PS5 system volume control first, then check the headset’s own volume wheel or buttons. These are separate controls, so a low setting on either one can make the headset seem quieter than expected.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Volume.
- Select Headphones and move the level up.
- For a quicker adjustment, press the PS button, select Sound in the Control Center, and change the headphone volume there.
- If the headset has a physical volume dial, buttons, or a companion control, raise that control as well. The available controls depend on the model.
If the slider changes but you still hear no sound, check that the console is sending audio to the headset rather than another output. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and review Output Device.

How do I select the headset and decide what reaches it?
Audio routing is configured in Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Choose the headset explicitly, or let the PS5 switch automatically whenever a headset is connected.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Set Output Device to the connected headset.
- Turn on Switch Output Device Automatically if you want the PS5 to change outputs when a headset is plugged in or its wireless adaptor connects.
- Use Output to Headphones to choose which audio is sent through the headset.
- Review the optional controls below if your device exposes them.
| Control | What it does | When it may be unavailable |
|---|---|---|
| Output Device | Selects the active headset or another audio output. | Choices vary with the devices currently connected. |
| Switch Output Device Automatically | Changes output when a headset connection is detected. | Not useful if you always want a fixed output. |
| Output to Headphones | Chooses the audio signal delivered to the headset. | Exact choices can vary by headset and connection. |
| Mono Audio for Headphones | Duplicates the same signal in both ears instead of separating left and right channels. | Only appears where the PS5 and connected output support it. |
| Sidetone Volume | Sets how loudly you hear your own voice through the headset. | Shown only when the headset supports sidetone or microphone monitoring. |
Mono output can be useful when you need the same information in each ear, but it removes normal stereo separation. Sidetone is different from game or chat volume: it controls your local voice feedback rather than making another speaker louder.
How do I make my PS5 microphone louder?
Calibrate the selected microphone in the Control Center. Speak at your normal distance and volume, then move the level until the input meter reaches the Good range rather than simply pushing the slider to its maximum.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Mic.
- If more than one microphone is listed, open Input Device and choose the headset microphone you intend to use.
- Select Adjust Microphone Level.
- Speak normally while watching the meter. Adjust the level until the meter is in the Good range.
PlayStation Support’s guidance is to “adjust the microphone level so that when you speak into the microphone, your input volume is in the Good range.”
A meter that is too low makes other players strain to hear you. A setting that is too high can clip your voice and contribute to echo, so the Good range is a better target than maximum gain.

What do the PS5 microphone status options mean?
The Mic card also controls whether the console starts muted and how it behaves when you enter voice chat or begin a broadcast.
- Microphone Status When Logged In can start the microphone muted or active when you sign in.
- Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast can preserve the current state or switch to mute automatically.
- The DualSense controller’s MUTE button can mute the microphone and speaker output. Press it again to restore them.
If the input meter does not react, first confirm the selected Input Device and check whether the headset or DualSense mute control is engaged. Device-specific controls and available options vary, so consult the exact headset manual if a control is missing.

How do I stop my PS5 headset from echoing?
Lower the PS5 microphone level slightly before changing hardware. PlayStation recommends moving the Microphone Level fader two to four notches to the left when an echo occurs.
- Press the PS button and open Mic in the Control Center.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level.
- Move the fader two to four notches left from its current position.
- Speak again and ask the other participant whether the echo has stopped.
- If the echo remains, reset the headset according to its manufacturer’s manual.
Echo is often caused by the microphone picking up sound that is being played back, excessive input gain, or a headset-specific monitoring setting. If you use a headset with Sidetone Volume or a physical monitor switch, lower or disable that local voice feedback only if you are hearing your own voice; it does not by itself remove an echo heard by other players.
How do I turn on and personalize 3D Audio on PS5?
Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). You can create a profile from a hearing test, select one of five presets, and then enable the feature for headphone output.

- Listen to the test sounds and answer where each sound appears to come from. The profile is based on how you hear those positions and angles.
- If you do not want to complete the test, select one of the five preset profiles instead.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
- After creating a personalized profile, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile so the PS5 uses it.
PlayStation describes the test as listening to sounds “played at different positions and angles to create an audio profile tailored to your hearing.”

Switching the feature off returns headphone output to stereo. Re-run the personalization when your listening conditions or preference changes; the result reflects your responses to the test, not a universal setting that is equally suitable for every listener.
What should I do if 3D Audio sounds wrong?
- Confirm that Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on.
- If you created a profile, confirm that Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is also on.
- Repeat the test while listening carefully to the direction prompts.
- Try a preset profile as a comparison. If a preset sounds more natural, you can use it instead of the personalized profile.
- Check the physical headset connection and the selected Output Device if the sound does not change at all.
Which headset connections support PS5 3D Audio?
Use a compatible USB headset, a headset connected through a USB wireless adaptor, or a compatible 3.5 mm stereo headset. Direct Bluetooth headset connections are not supported on PS5, so Bluetooth compatibility should not be assumed from a headset’s phone or computer support.
| Connection type | PS5 status | 3D Audio | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB headset or USB wireless adaptor | Supported when the exact device is compatible with PS5. | Supported. | Wireless performance can be affected by nearby USB 3.0 devices. |
| Analog 3.5 mm stereo headset | Supported when the exact device is compatible with PS5. | Supported. | Headset-specific wireless controls are not available because the connection is analog. |
| Direct Bluetooth headset | Not supported as a direct PS5 headset connection. | Do not assume support. | Phone or PC Bluetooth compatibility does not make a headset PS5-compatible. |
PlayStation states that not all devices work with the console. Before buying, verify the exact model’s PS5 compatibility rather than relying only on the connector type. A compatible USB or 3.5 mm stereo headset is a legitimate alternative to Sony’s own wireless model.
What controls does the PULSE 3D wireless headset provide?
Sony’s PULSE 3D wireless headset is tuned for the 3D Audio available on PS5. It includes dual noise-cancelling microphones, master volume, microphone mute, chat/game balance controls, and microphone monitoring.

| Feature | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Master volume | Adjusts overall headset loudness without opening the PS5 menus. |
| Mic mute | Quickly stops microphone transmission from the headset. |
| CHAT and GAME buttons | Change the relative balance between chat and game audio. |
| MONITOR switch | Lets you hear your own voice through microphone monitoring. |
| Dual noise-cancelling microphones | Provides the headset’s built-in voice pickup system. |
| Wireless battery | Sony lists up to 12 hours of wireless play in 2022 product documentation; actual runtime varies with use. |
The controls above depend on the wireless connection. If you connect a PULSE 3D by audio cable, its wireless-only chat/game balance, microphone mute, microphone monitoring, and volume controls are disabled. Use the wireless adaptor when you need those integrated controls; the cable connection remains a separate way to send stereo audio.
The PULSE 3D instruction manual was published in 2024. Its documented CHAT and GAME buttons adjust relative balance rather than acting as independent master-volume controls, so use the master volume control for overall loudness.
How do I fix wireless headset skipping or dropouts?
Reduce interference around the wireless adaptor. PlayStation recommends removing USB 3.0 devices from the console or using a USB extension cable to increase the distance between the wireless adaptor and other USB devices.
- Disconnect nearby USB 3.0 devices temporarily and test the headset.
- If the skipping stops, reconnect only the devices you need, keeping the wireless adaptor separated from them.
- Use a USB extension cable when necessary to move the adaptor farther from USB 3.0 hardware.
- Retest game audio and voice chat after each change so you can identify whether the interference has been reduced.
This remedy addresses wireless interference; it does not change the PS5 volume, microphone gain, or 3D Audio profile. If a wired 3.5 mm headset works normally while the wireless connection skips, the symptom points toward the wireless path or its surrounding USB environment rather than the console’s headphone volume setting.
How should I compare PS5 headsets before buying?
Compare the connection and controls you actually need, not just a claimed surround-sound label. The PS5 can provide 3D Audio through compatible USB and analog headsets, while direct Bluetooth support is unavailable.

| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Is it USB wireless, USB wired, or 3.5 mm analog? | Determines compatibility, wireless behavior, and whether cable-only limitations apply. |
| PS5 compatibility | Does the manufacturer list this exact model for PS5? | PlayStation warns that not every device works with the console. |
| Microphone controls | Can you mute quickly, and does the headset expose sidetone or monitoring? | Controls how easily you manage voice feedback and privacy. |
| Chat/game balance | Can you adjust the relative mix on the headset? | Useful when you need to hear voice chat and game audio at different levels. |
| 3D Audio | Does the connection support PS5 headphone 3D Audio? | USB and compatible 3.5 mm stereo models can support it; direct Bluetooth cannot be assumed to. |
| Comfort | Can you wear it for the length of your sessions? | Weight, clamping force, ear-pad shape, and heat affect practical use but are model-specific. |
| Battery life | What runtime does the manufacturer publish, and under what conditions? | Published figures are estimates. For example, Sony’s PULSE 3D figure is “up to 12 hours” from 2022 documentation. |
A wireless adaptor is the better fit when you want headset-side controls and freedom from a cable. A 3.5 mm stereo headset is a straightforward wired option and can still use PS5 3D Audio, but it will not provide wireless-only controls. Whichever route you choose, confirm the exact model’s PS5 support before purchase.
What should I check when a setting or control is missing?
Missing controls usually reflect the connected device or connection method rather than a hidden master switch. Recheck the active Output Device and Input Device, then compare the available options with the headset’s manual.
- For no headset volume option, open Settings > Sound > Volume and confirm a headset is recognized.
- For no microphone controls, open the Control Center’s Mic card and select the intended Input Device.
- For no sidetone, microphone monitoring, chat/game balance, or headset mute control, check whether the device is connected by cable instead of its wireless adaptor.
- For no 3D Audio change, verify both 3D Audio toggles and the selected Output Device.
- For unreliable behavior, confirm that the exact headset model is PS5-compatible; connector type alone is not a guarantee.
The PS5 FAQ published on November 9, 2020 and later PlayStation headset guidance establish the console-level paths above, while individual headset manuals determine which physical controls and connection-specific features are available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hear my own voice without sending it to other players?
Yes, when the headset supports sidetone or microphone monitoring, the relevant control feeds your voice back locally. This feedback is separate from whether the microphone is muted for chat, so use the headset’s monitor control or the PS5 Sidetone Volume option where available.
What is the practical use of Mono Audio for Headphones?
It places the same signal in both ears instead of preserving left-right separation. That can help when you use one ear, have different hearing between ears, or need identical content on both sides, but it is not a loudness boost.
Do all USB headsets expose the same PS5 controls?
No. USB establishes a connection, but microphone monitoring, chat/game balance, physical mute behavior, and other controls remain device-specific. Check the exact model’s PS5 compatibility information and manual before assuming a feature is available.
Does the PULSE 3D battery figure guarantee a fixed play time?
No. Sony’s “up to 12 hours” statement is an estimate from 2022 product documentation, not a guaranteed runtime for every session. Wireless activity and how the headset is used can change the result.
