To adjust PS5 3D audio for headphones, connect a compatible headset, then open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile, identify where the on-screen sounds appear to come from, and turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. You can instead use one of PlayStation’s five preset profiles. The separate Enable 3D Audio for Headphones switch changes headphone playback between 3D audio and stereo.

PlayStation does not specify a required chair position for creating a headphone profile. Its instructions about sitting in your usual place and remeasuring after moving the TV, seat, or room apply to TV-speaker 3D audio, not headphone calibration.

What does PS5 3D Audio for Headphones change?

PS5 3D Audio for Headphones processes game sound to create directional cues through headphones. The console can use either a profile you create by listening to test sounds or one of five built-in presets. The profile choice and the on/off 3D-audio switch are separate controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Personalized profile: You listen to sounds presented at different positions and angles, then answer the prompts so the console can create a profile.
  • Preset profile: You select one of five built-in settings without completing the listening exercise. The official instructions do not name the presets or describe which one suits a particular game, headset, hearing profile, or seat.
  • 3D-audio switch: Enable 3D Audio for Headphones turns processed 3D output on. Turning it off returns headphone playback to stereo.

A profile can exist without being active. Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile determines whether PS5 uses the profile you created; when that option is off, PS5 uses a preset instead.

It helps to think of the controls as two separate choices: whether headphone playback is 3D or stereo, and, when using 3D audio, whether the active profile is personalized or a preset. Creating a profile does not itself turn 3D audio on, and choosing a preset does not mean stereo is selected. Check both controls when the output is not what you expect.

How do I create and apply a personalized headphone profile?

Use the following sequence on the PS5. The labels are the names used in the console’s sound settings.

  1. Connect compatible headphones. Plug in or pair the headset you intend to use. PlayStation notes that not every audio device works with PS5 and that available options can vary with the device and configuration.
  2. Open the headphone 3D-audio menu. From the home screen, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  3. Start the calibration. Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
  4. Listen to each test sound. The console presents sounds from different positions and angles. Follow the prompts and identify each sound’s position and direction as accurately as you can.
  5. Apply the result. After the profile is created, enable Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. This tells PS5 to use your profile instead of a preset.
  6. Confirm 3D output is enabled. Make sure Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on. If it is off, the console outputs stereo even if a personalized profile exists.

The setup is an on-screen listening exercise, not a measurement of the room. You do not enter a seat distance, room dimensions, or headphone model during the documented process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During the prompts, the task is to judge the sound’s apparent position and direction, rather than to provide a room measurement. Take the questions in sequence and answer based on what you hear through the connected headphones. The goal is to complete the console’s requested listening exercise; PlayStation’s instructions do not specify a scoring threshold, a required number of attempts, or a separate measurement to enter afterward.

What if I do not want to create a profile?

You can use a preset instead. PlayStation documents five preset settings, so the personalized listening exercise is not the only profile path. The available official guidance does not list the preset names or explain their sound differences. If you choose one, listen to the result rather than relying on a label or assumed genre recommendation.

To use a preset in place of a created profile, turn off Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. That setting controls whether the personal profile is applied. If you also want stereo, turn off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones; turning off the personalized-profile option alone does not switch 3D processing off.

Does my listening position matter when calibrating headphones?

PlayStation’s headphone instructions do not prescribe a particular seat, distance from the screen, or angle to the console. They also do not say that you must recalibrate after moving to another chair. Wear the headphones normally and complete the sound-identification prompts, but do not treat the TV-speaker seating instructions as headphone requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, you can create a headphone profile without measuring the chair-to-TV distance or entering room information. If you move seats later, the headphone instructions do not require a new profile. You can repeat the listening exercise if you want to reassess the result, but that is different from an official recalibration requirement.

Why the TV-speaker instructions are different

PS5 has a separate 3D-audio setup for television speakers. That process uses the TV speakers and the controller microphone to measure room acoustics. PlayStation advises sitting where you normally use the console and measuring again after changing the TV position, seating, or room environment.

Those are room-measurement instructions for TV speakers. They are not a second step in the headphone workflow, and moving a TV or rearranging a room is not identified as a reason to recreate a headphone profile. Keep the two setups separate when following PlayStation’s directions: use the position and remeasurement advice for TV-speaker audio, and use the sound-identification prompts for headphones.

What to do if several people use the console

Another listener can complete the personalized-profile process while wearing the headphones they use. However, PlayStation’s cited setup guidance does not describe profile storage, user-account behavior, or automatic profile switching. Do not assume that PS5 selects a different profile automatically for every person. If another listener’s profile is active, return to the 3D-audio menu and inspect the profile controls available on that console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a personalized profile or a preset?

A personalized profile is the documented choice when you want PS5 to tailor the 3D-audio settings through your own listening responses. A preset is faster and avoids the measurement flow. PlayStation does not publish names or tonal descriptions for the five presets in the cited instructions, so there is no evidence-based way to label one as best for a genre, game, seat, or hearing characteristic.

Option What you do What PlayStation documents What is not established
Personalized profile Listen to sounds at different positions and angles and identify their direction. Can be created from 3D Audio (Headphones) and activated with Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. No published seat requirement, preset-equivalence rating, or game-specific recommendation.
Preset profile Choose one of five built-in settings without completing the listening exercise. Used when the personalized-profile option is off. Preset names, audible differences, and suitability for a particular listener are not stated.

If the personalized result sounds unnatural, switch Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile off and try a preset. This changes the profile path; it does not by itself turn 3D processing off.

There is no documented performance rating to use when choosing between these paths. The personalized option asks you to complete an individual listening exercise; the presets let you skip it. Since the official instructions do not compare the presets’ character or rank them, a sensible decision is to start with either route, listen to the result, and switch paths if you prefer the other sound. Do not infer from the number of presets that one is intended for a certain game, seating position, headset brand, or hearing need.

How do I switch between 3D audio and stereo?

In Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), use Enable 3D Audio for Headphones. Enabled means the headphone output uses 3D audio; disabled means it uses stereo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Sound, then 3D Audio (Headphones).
  3. Turn Enable 3D Audio for Headphones on for 3D playback or off for stereo.
  4. If 3D is on, decide separately whether Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile should be on or off.

A practical comparison is to listen to the same game scene with the switch on and off. If the sound does not change, check that the headphones are the selected output device and that the device supports the available PS5 options.

Which combination of settings am I using?

Use this quick guide to identify the state of the two controls:

  • 3D Audio off: Headphone playback is stereo, whether or not you created a personal profile.
  • 3D Audio on and personalized profile applied: PS5 uses the personal profile you created.
  • 3D Audio on and personalized profile not applied: PS5 uses a preset profile.

This distinction is useful when comparing modes or troubleshooting. If your goal is simply to compare stereo with 3D audio, change the 3D-audio switch and leave the profile choice alone for that test. If your goal is to compare a personal profile with a preset, keep 3D audio enabled and change the apply-profile setting. Changing one control at a time makes it clearer which setting changed the result.

What other PS5 sound settings should I check?

3D-audio calibration does not replace the basic output-device controls. PlayStation’s audio guidance lists settings for choosing the output device, allowing automatic device switching, selecting headphone output, and adjusting headphone volume. The labels and available choices can differ according to the connected device and your configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output device and automatic switching

Verify that PS5 is sending sound to the headphones you are wearing rather than the TV or another connected device. If automatic device switching is enabled, connecting or disconnecting equipment can change the active output. Recheck the selected output whenever the expected 3D effect disappears.

Output-device selection is a separate check from profile selection. A profile setting cannot help if sound is being routed somewhere other than the headphones you are listening with. Check the selected device after connecting headphones, and check again if the console changes devices when equipment is attached or removed.

Headphone output and volume

Use the headphone-output and volume controls to make sure the signal is audible and comfortable. PlayStation lists headphone volume among its audio controls. If you adjust volume or headphone output, remember that these are separate from the profile and 3D-audio switches; return to the 3D Audio (Headphones) menu to confirm those settings as well.

What if the 3D-audio options are missing or do not work?

Most problems come from device compatibility, the wrong output route, or one of the two separate switches being off. Work through these checks in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Headphones are not recognized: reconnect them, confirm that PS5 is using them as the output device, and try a headset known to work with the console. PlayStation states that not all devices are compatible.
  • The personalized option is unavailable: check that compatible headphones are connected before opening Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Options can vary with the device and configuration.
  • You created a profile but hear stereo: confirm both Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile and Enable 3D Audio for Headphones. The first selects your profile; the second enables 3D processing.
  • You hear 3D audio but it sounds wrong: repeat the listening prompts while wearing the headphones in their normal position, or turn off the personalized-profile option and try a preset. The official instructions do not identify a universally preferred preset.
  • Sound changes when equipment is connected: inspect output-device selection and automatic device switching, then return to the 3D-audio menu.

Do not use TV-speaker room measurement as a workaround for a headphone-profile problem. It calibrates a different output path.

When troubleshooting, separate a missing menu option from an unexpected sound. For a missing option, begin with the compatibility and configuration limitation PlayStation describes: not every device works, and available settings can vary. For a sound-mode issue, confirm the selected output device, the headphone 3D switch, and the personalized-profile switch. This sequence checks the documented setup and avoids treating the profile, output route, and stereo/3D choice as a single control.

Are special PS5 headphones required?

No new headset is specified as a requirement for this setup. You need headphones that work with PS5, but PlayStation says compatibility and available audio settings depend on the connected device and configuration.

PlayStation’s guidance mentions PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite when describing PS5 equalizer and 3D-audio settings. They are examples of PlayStation hardware with related settings, not a requirement to create a profile. A different compatible headset may expose a different set of controls. The headphone setup instructions do not say that buying one of these products is necessary, and they do not establish a price or a performance advantage for any particular model.

How is Audio Focus different from 3D audio?

Audio Focus is a separate headphone feature intended to emphasize quiet sounds in certain frequency ranges. It is not a step in creating or applying a 3D-audio profile.

PlayStation says headphones are required for Audio Focus, recommends checking the volume because sounds may be loud, and requires current system software. If you are troubleshooting 3D audio, leave Audio Focus out of the initial process so that you change one audio feature at a time; configure 3D audio first, then evaluate Audio Focus separately if you need it. Its requirements and purpose are distinct from the personalized-profile prompts and the 3D-versus-stereo switch.

Which setup should I choose in common situations?

You want the most individualized setup

Create the personalized profile, apply it, and keep Enable 3D Audio for Headphones on. Complete the prompts with the headphones positioned as you normally wear them.

You need to start playing quickly

Choose one of the five presets and enable 3D audio. The preset names and documented differences are not provided, so select among them by listening rather than by assuming a particular game-specific benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are diagnosing a sound problem

First verify the output device and volume. Then toggle Enable 3D Audio for Headphones to compare 3D processing with stereo. If the issue occurs only with 3D enabled, switch between the personalized profile and a preset; if it occurs in both modes, investigate the output device, headset connection, or compatibility.

You moved to another chair

For headphones, simply continue using the profile unless you want to repeat the listening exercise. PlayStation’s documented requirement to sit in the normal position and remeasure after a move concerns TV speakers, not the headphone profile.

You are choosing a headset

Do not buy a particular model solely because you want to create a personalized profile. The documented requirement is a compatible pair of headphones, and PlayStation does not say a new headset is required. If you already have headphones that work with PS5, connect them and inspect the available options. Because compatibility and settings vary by device and configuration, verify support for your chosen equipment rather than assuming every audio device exposes the same controls.

You only want to change the profile, not the output mode

Leave Enable 3D Audio for Headphones on, then switch Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile on or off to choose between the personal profile and a preset. If you turn off the 3D-audio switch instead, the console returns headphone playback to stereo. Keeping those actions distinct avoids mistaking a profile change for a stereo/3D change.

What should I remember about PS5 headphone calibration?

  • The exact path is Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  • Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile uses your answers about sound position and direction.
  • Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile selects that profile; turning it off uses a preset.
  • Enable 3D Audio for Headphones switches between 3D audio and stereo.
  • Five presets are documented, but their names and differences are not supplied in the official instructions.
  • No required headphone listening seat is documented. Room-position and remeasurement guidance applies to TV speakers.
  • Device compatibility and available settings vary, so verify the output route with the headphones connected.
  • No special PlayStation headset is identified as mandatory; named PULSE models are examples, not a purchase requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create a PS5 headphone profile while using a wireless headset?

PlayStation’s instructions require headphones that work with the console but do not specify a required connection type. Compatibility and available settings vary by device and configuration, so connect your headset and check which controls appear under 3D Audio (Headphones).

Will changing the TV position invalidate my headphone profile?

PlayStation’s remeasurement advice for a changed TV, seat, or room applies to TV-speaker 3D audio. Its headphone instructions do not state that moving the television requires a new headphone profile.

How can I tell whether PS5 is using my personalized profile?

Open Settings, Sound, and 3D Audio (Headphones), then check whether Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is enabled. If it is disabled, PS5 uses a preset even though a personalized profile may have been created.

Why do the five presets have no descriptive names in my instructions?

PlayStation’s setup guidance documents five presets but does not provide their individual names or compare their sound characteristics. Choose by listening rather than assigning a preset to a specific game or hearing need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If I turn off Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile, does that turn off 3D audio?

No. That setting determines whether PS5 uses your personalized profile or a preset. To switch headphone playback to stereo, turn off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.

Do I need to buy a PULSE headset to use PS5 3D audio?

PlayStation’s instructions do not require a particular headset purchase. They say to connect compatible headphones; compatibility and available options vary by device and configuration. PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite are examples mentioned in PlayStation’s audio guidance.

Do I have to repeat headphone calibration after moving seats?

PlayStation does not specify a required headphone listening position or say that a seat change requires a new profile. The instruction to sit in the usual place and remeasure after a seating or room change applies to TV-speaker audio.

Is Audio Focus part of the 3D-audio profile setup?

No. Audio Focus is a separate headphone feature for emphasizing quiet sounds in certain frequency ranges. PlayStation says it requires headphones and current system software, and recommends checking volume because sounds may be loud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For PS5 headphones, create a personalized profile by following the sound-position prompts or choose one of the five presets. Use Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile to choose the personal profile and Enable 3D Audio for Headphones to switch between 3D audio and stereo. PlayStation does not specify a required headphone listening position; its seat and room remeasurement guidance is for TV speakers.
