If your character isn’t performing the correct actions when you move the Joy-Con, Nintendo documents one game-specific control change: Soccer’s Leg-Strap Mode. For other motion problems, you can recalibrate the Joy-Con through the Switch’s System Settings or let the console automatically recalibrate while the game is open. Nintendo’s FAQ does not list a general motion-sensitivity setting.

Change Soccer to Leg-Strap Mode

Nintendo provides different button paths depending on how you are playing:

  • Play Globally: On the sport-selection screen, highlight Soccer and press X.
  • Play Locally or Play with Friends: On the screen showing how to hold the Joy-Con controllers, press +.

If the problem happens only when using a Leg Strap, check that it is attached correctly. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for compatibility and Soccer troubleshooting guidance.

Recalibrate motion controls in System Settings

This console-level procedure is separate from the Soccer mode setting. Nintendo’s calibration guidance asks you to check for the latest system update, remove controller straps and other accessories, and keep the Joy-Con still during calibration.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
  2. Choose the controller you want to calibrate, then hold − or + on that controller as directed.
  3. Place the Joy-Con stick-up on a flat, stable surface and leave it undisturbed while calibration runs.
  4. When calibration finishes, choose OK.

Follow Nintendo’s Joy-Con motion-control calibration instructions if you need the console’s on-screen guidance.

Let motion controls recalibrate while the game is open

Nintendo also describes an automatic recalibration method for Switch motion controls that does not require closing the game. Set the device being calibrated on a flat, stable surface for at least five seconds. The recalibration happens automatically, and Nintendo says there is no notification that it has started or completed. This is general Nintendo Switch guidance; the instructions do not specifically name Nintendo Switch Sports.

For the distinction between the in-game method and System Settings calibration, see Nintendo’s motion-control calibration Q&A.

Check controller compatibility

Supported controller configurations depend on the sport. Nintendo Switch Sports supports paired or single Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 configurations depending on the sport, but it does not support Handheld Mode. Neither Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers nor Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers is compatible with the game, and Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the Leg Strap. Nintendo lists the details in its controller compatibility FAQ.

Nintendo Blue/Neon Yellow Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch

  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible

Troubleshoot motion input that still does not work

If calibration does not resolve the issue, Nintendo recommends updating the console and software, then resetting the Joy-Con by pressing its SYNC button once and pressing another button. Confirm that the software supports motion controls. If motion input fails with supported software or calibration fails, Nintendo says the non-working Joy-Con needs service. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con troubleshooting guidance.

Is there a motion-sensitivity setting?

Nintendo’s FAQ documents the Soccer-specific Leg-Strap Mode change, but it does not list a general motion-sensitivity slider or a global motion-control off switch for Nintendo Switch Sports. Recalibration addresses motion alignment; Nintendo’s calibration guidance does not establish that a sensitivity control exists.
