On a PC, adjust gaming EQ and spatial audio in SteelSeries GG under Sonar > Game, tune the headset microphone under Sonar > Microphone, and adjust chat sound under Sonar > Chat. For spatial sound, Windows also offers Windows Sonic for Headphones, Dolby Access, and DTS Sound Unbound. The right settings depend on what you want to hear, so use Sonar’s test playback and your own voice recordings rather than assuming one preset suits every game or room.
What can you adjust on the Arctis Nova 3X?
The practical controls fall into three separate tasks: shaping game audio, improving the sound sent through your microphone, and applying spatial processing. Sonar provides the PC workflows for those tasks. Its Game tab is where you test gaming EQ and spatial audio; Microphone is where you record and assess your mic; and Chat is for communication audio and chat processing.
Keep the goal in mind while changing settings. A game EQ changes the tone of the gaming audio you hear; microphone processing changes how your voice is captured; chat EQ changes the sound of communication audio. These are different paths, so a change in one tab is not a substitute for tuning another.
- Game detail: use the Game tab’s Equalizer and Spatial Audio controls.
- Voice capture: use the Microphone tab’s recording, equalizer, and noise-reduction controls.
- Communication audio: use the Chat tab’s communication test and chat processing controls.
How do you connect the Nova 3X before tuning it?
Set the wireless dongle’s switch to match the device before connecting. SteelSeries’ setup instructions specify the Xbox position for Xbox, and PC mode for PC, PS5, or a docked Nintendo Switch.

Sonar’s EQ and test workflows described below are PC workflows. The provided setup instructions identify the dongle modes for consoles, but do not document equivalent Sonar controls on console. If you are using a console, do not assume the PC app’s settings are available there.
How do you adjust the gaming EQ on a PC?
Use Sonar’s Game test sound while editing so you can hear the effect of each change. SteelSeries says the EQ changes are audible instantly, and you can enter exact values by double-clicking a frequency.
- Open SteelSeries GG and go to Sonar > Game.
- Open Test Sound and choose Gaming audio.
- Press play to start the sample.
- Adjust the Equalizer while listening. Changes should be audible as you make them.
- To enter a precise setting, double-click the frequency you want to change and type your desired value.
- After testing with the sample, try the game or other content you actually care about and refine the EQ by listening.
How should you choose EQ settings?
There is no universally correct curve established for the Nova 3X in the published setup guidance. Treat EQ as a listening preference, not a guaranteed upgrade: a change that helps one game or makes one sound more prominent may not suit another game or music.

Make adjustments in a controlled way. Listen to the test sample, change the equalizer, and compare the result before making another change. Then check it against the content you use most. If the change makes your target sound less clear or less comfortable, move back toward the previous setting. This is more reliable than copying an unexplained curve without knowing what it is intended to do.
How do you make the Nova 3X microphone sound better?
Record your voice in Sonar, listen to that recording, and use the playback to judge microphone EQ and noise reduction. The headset includes a detachable ClearCast microphone; position it close to the corner of your mouth with its front surface facing you.
- Open the Microphone tab in Sonar.
- Select Mic Test and record your voice. SteelSeries recommends speaking for at least 15 seconds.
- Stop the recording and play it back.
- Adjust the Microphone Equalizer while listening to the recording.
- If the recording picks up room or keyboard noise, try Noise Reduction. For loud keyboard impact noise specifically, SteelSeries recommends Impact Noise Reduction.
- Record and play back another sample to judge the adjusted result.
Position the detachable mic first
Before relying on processing, place the mic near the corner of your mouth and point its front surface toward you. The position matters because you are evaluating the voice that reaches the microphone. Make the test recording with the mic in the position you intend to use.

Choose noise reduction for the noise you hear
Use the recording playback to decide whether background noise is actually a problem. The documented recommendation is specific: Impact Noise Reduction is intended for loud keyboard impact noise. The setup guidance does not establish a single noise-reduction setting for every room, keyboard, or voice, so assess the result with your own recording rather than selecting processing blindly.
How do you tune chat audio separately from game audio?
Use Sonar’s Chat tab when the issue is the sound of communication audio, rather than the sound of the game or your outgoing microphone. The chat test plays a communication sample while you adjust the chat equalizer.
- Open Sonar > Chat.
- Open Test Sound and select Communication.
- Press play to hear the test.
- Adjust the chat equalizer while the sample plays.
- If needed, assess Sonar’s chat Noise Reduction, Noise Gate, and Smart Voice controls against your communication use.
Keep the distinction clear: the Microphone tab concerns your captured voice; the Chat tab concerns communication audio. If other people say your voice is noisy, start with the microphone workflow. If communication audio is difficult for you to hear, test the Chat path instead.

How do you turn on spatial audio?
For Sonar processing on PC, open Sonar > Game, play its spatial-audio test, and adjust the Spatial Audio controls while listening. Windows also has a separate system-level spatial sound setting called Windows Sonic for Headphones.
Use Sonar’s spatial-audio test
- Open Sonar > Game.
- Open Test Sound and choose Spatial audio.
- Press play.
- Adjust the Spatial Audio controls while listening to the sample in real time.
Enable Windows Sonic for Headphones
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the Nova 3X playback device.
- Open Device Properties.
- Under Spatial sound, select Windows Sonic for Headphones.
- Select Apply.
Microsoft also lists Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound as downloadable alternatives for Windows spatial audio. These are additional system-level options, not a reason to enable every available processing layer at once. The official setup guidance does not prescribe one combination for every game; compare the result and avoid stacking spatial processing without checking whether it sounds better to you.

Which setting should you change for each problem?
Start with the control that matches the symptom. This avoids changing multiple unrelated paths and makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment helped.

What should you check if a setting does not seem to work?
Check the connection mode, playback path, and test selection before changing more equalizer values. A correct setting on the wrong audio path will not address the sound you are trying to change.
- The headset is not connecting as expected: confirm that the dongle switch is set to Xbox for Xbox, or PC for PC, PS5, and docked Switch.
- EQ changes are hard to judge: verify that Sonar’s Test Sound is playing the intended sample—Gaming audio for game EQ, Communication for chat EQ—and listen while making the adjustment.
- Your voice still sounds noisy: check mic placement and listen to a fresh Mic Test recording. If the problem is loud keyboard impact noise, try the documented Impact Noise Reduction option.
- Spatial audio sounds unusual: test one processing path at a time. Sonar and Windows spatial sound are distinct controls, and the setup guidance does not prescribe a universal combination.
- You are using a console: the documented EQ and spatial-audio instructions are for Sonar on PC; the setup guide only specifies the dongle mode for console connection.
Does the Arctis Nova 3X have a replaceable microphone?
Yes. The headset comes with a detachable ClearCast microphone, so the relevant replacement route when that mic is lost or damaged is a compatible detachable ClearCast replacement.
