Set the load lifters and sternum strap for stability, not so tightly that they pinch, restrict movement or affect breathing. If the pack still sits badly, check its torso and belt fit: tighter straps cannot correct a mismatched suspension. For a school backpack, use both shoulder straps and keep the bag close and centered; its straps do not necessarily transfer weight like a hiking pack’s hipbelt.
Adjust a hiking backpack with a hipbelt
Fit the pack while it carries the load you expect to hike with, or use a moderate load for a fitting check. The suggested fitting loads differ by source: REI recommends about 15 pounds for its home fit check, while Osprey’s instructions describe 10–20 pounds. These are separate fitting demonstrations, not universal load prescriptions. Loosen the adjustment straps before putting the pack on.
1. Position and snug the hipbelt
Center the padded belt over your hipbones and tighten it evenly until it feels secure without pinching. In this setup, the hipbelt is the starting point for transferring pack weight; do not try to make shoulder straps compensate for a belt that is sitting incorrectly. If the belt rides too high or too low, check the pack’s height and torso adjustment before tightening it further.
2. Set the shoulder straps
Pull the shoulder straps down and back until they follow your shoulders closely, without a gap. With a properly fitted, load-bearing hipbelt, the shoulder straps should not carry significant weight. If they dig into your shoulders or feel like they are supporting most of the load, recheck the belt position and pack fit rather than simply pulling the straps tighter.

3. Snug the load lifters
Load lifters draw the upper pack closer to your body and help stabilize the load. Tighten them only until the pack feels stable: excessive tension can pinch the shoulder joints or pull the harness away from the shoulders. REI gives an approximate 45-degree angle as a fitting guide; Osprey gives a 30–60-degree range when torso length is correctly adjusted. These are source-specific heuristics, not one mandatory angle for every pack.
4. Adjust the sternum strap
Set the sternum strap at a comfortable height and buckle it just enough to keep the shoulder straps at a stable width. REI suggests placing it roughly an inch below the collarbones. It should not pull the shoulder straps inward so far that it restricts arm movement or breathing.

5. Walk and fine-tune
Walk with the loaded pack and notice whether it stays stable and whether any strap creates a pressure point. Make small adjustments rather than cinching everything down at once. If discomfort persists, check torso length, hipbelt sizing and pack compatibility; an in-person pack fitting can help when it is difficult to assess those adjustments at home.
Fit a school backpack differently
A school backpack may not have the load-bearing suspension of a hiking pack, so do not assume its waist strap transfers weight in the same way. For a child or teen, use both shoulder straps, adjust them evenly and keep the bag close and centered on the back. Secure a waist or chest strap if the bag has one. Put heavier items close to the body and distribute other items among the compartments.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says a child’s backpack should rest with its bottom in the curve of the lower back and extend from waist level to about 1–2 inches below the shoulders. It should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) also advises paying attention to posture and symptoms as a student puts the pack on, walks and takes it off.
Check the load and watch for discomfort
The AAP and AAOS give 15% of a child’s body weight as a guideline for a loaded school backpack. The AAOS describes this as a general guideline. This pediatric school-pack figure is not an established maximum for adult hiking packs, nor does it show that staying below the figure prevents injury.

- Lighten or refit the bag if the wearer struggles to lift it, leans forward to carry it or reports discomfort.
- Do not ignore persistent pain, numbness or tingling. These signs call for checking the load and fit; they do not by themselves establish the cause.
- For a child, the AAP advises seeking pediatric advice for back pain that occurs at times other than wearing a backpack.
When strap adjustment is not enough
A harness that gaps, a belt that will not sit over the hipbones, or a pack that remains uncomfortable after reasonable adjustment can indicate a sizing or compatibility problem. Torso length and hipbelt fit are separate checks. When comparing another hiking pack, look at torso sizing and adjustability, hipbelt size and position, shoulder-harness contact, and whether the load lifters and sternum strap can be set comfortably. An adjustable-torso pack may be an option, but adjustment straps cannot compensate for a wrongly set suspension.
Published fitting guidance explains how to position straps, but the sources cited here do not quantify how much correct adjustment reduces shoulder strain. Treat a better fit as a way to improve comfort and stability, not as a measured guarantee of a particular reduction in strain.
