You can add Xbox Cloud Gaming to Steam Deck Gaming Mode by installing the Microsoft Edge Flatpak in Desktop Mode, adding Edge to Steam as a non-Steam game, and configuring that shortcut to open https://www.xbox.com/play in kiosk mode. After you apply the recommended controller layout, the shortcut appears in Gaming Mode’s Non-Steam section like a library game.
This is a browser shortcut, not a native Xbox application. Microsoft describes the Edge package as community maintained and says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported, so use this method if you are comfortable with a desktop-mode setup and occasional troubleshooting.
What does Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck actually install?
The official Steam Deck procedure uses Microsoft Edge as a non-Steam shortcut. Edge opens the Xbox Cloud Gaming website in a controlled, game-like window, while Steam supplies the library entry and controller mapping. You are not installing an Xbox app or downloading the cloud games to the Deck.
Microsoft’s current instructions are documented in Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge with Steam Deck. Xbox Wire describes Steam Deck access as beta and notes that setup requires switching to Desktop Mode and installing Edge. Cloud gaming availability, catalogues and features remain subject to region, plan and title eligibility.

Microsoft also states that it does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support for Microsoft Edge on SteamOS. The method is therefore best treated as an enthusiast configuration rather than a supported native Deck app.
What should you prepare before starting?
Have these items ready before you leave Gaming Mode. The mouse and keyboard are conveniences for setup, not requirements for playing once the shortcut and controls work.

Check that Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in your country and that the particular game is cloud enabled. Xbox says supported regions, devices, plan benefits and the cloud-playable catalogue can change over time.

Install the Edge Flatpak from Discover while the Deck is in Desktop Mode. Do not try to complete this part from Gaming Mode.
- Press the Steam button.
- Choose Power, then Switch to Desktop.
- Open Discover Software Center.
- Browse to Applications > Internet > Web Browsers.
- Find Microsoft Edge and select Install.
The package shown in Discover is the community-maintained Edge Flatpak referenced by Microsoft’s instructions. If Discover asks for authentication or an update, complete that process before moving on.

How do I add Edge to Steam as a non-Steam game?
Use the desktop application launcher to add the installed browser to your Steam library.
- Open the desktop Application Launcher.
- Choose Internet.
- Right-click Microsoft Edge and select Add to Steam.
- In Steam’s Add a Game window, select the Edge entry and confirm Add Selected Programs (or the equivalent add button shown by your Steam client).
Steam now creates a shortcut. It may initially be named simply Microsoft Edge; the next steps turn it into an Xbox Cloud Gaming launcher.
What command gives Edge access to the Deck’s controller devices?
Run Microsoft’s documented Flatpak override once in Konsole. It grants Edge read-only access to the udev device path used for controller detection.
- Open Konsole from the desktop application menu.
- Enter this command exactly:
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge- Press Enter, wait for the command prompt to return, type
exit, and press Enter.
The command does not install another application or alter your Xbox account. It changes the Edge Flatpak’s user-level filesystem permission so the browser can see the relevant input devices.
How do I configure the Steam shortcut to open Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Change the shortcut name and append Microsoft’s launch arguments so Edge opens the cloud-gaming site at the intended size and scale.

- Open Steam’s Library in Desktop Mode.
- Select the Edge shortcut, open its Properties, and replace the name with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
- Find the Launch Options field. Leave the existing
@@u @@text in place and append a space followed by this complete argument string:
--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"- Close the Properties window to save the shortcut.
The --kiosk switch opens the Xbox site without normal browser chrome. The window-size and scale values are the settings in Microsoft’s Steam Deck procedure; changing them can affect readability or how much of the game interface is visible.

Apply Steam’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template to the shortcut. This gives the browser both gamepad-style controls and a way to operate menus that expect a pointer.
- With the shortcut selected in Steam, open Manage.
- Choose Controller layout.
- Open Browse configurations.
- Find and apply the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template.
- Save or confirm the layout and return to the library.
Cloud games do not all expose identical input behavior. If a title uses a browser menu, sign-in prompt or on-screen button that does not respond to a gamepad, use the trackpad or touchscreen pointer supplied by this layout.
How do I launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from Gaming Mode?
Return to Gaming Mode, open the Non-Steam section of your library and start the renamed shortcut.
- On the desktop, select the Return to Gaming Mode icon.
- In Gaming Mode, open Library and select Non-Steam.
- Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
- Press Play. Edge opens the Xbox Cloud Gaming page at
https://www.xbox.com/play. - Sign in to your Microsoft account if prompted.
- Select a game marked as available for cloud play and start it.
The first launch can take longer while the browser session is created. Once signed in, the site may remember your account in the browser profile, although Xbox can request authentication again after a session expires or account security changes.

Should I add Xbox artwork to the shortcut?
Artwork is optional polish. The shortcut launches without custom images, and adding them does not change streaming, controller support or account eligibility.
Microsoft’s Steam Deck article provides official Xbox Cloud Gaming icon, banner and capsule artwork and explains how to apply them from Steam’s library artwork controls. Use those instructions if you want the entry to look like the rest of your library; otherwise, leave the default artwork in place.
Why might the shortcut not appear or the game not respond?
Most setup failures come from performing a step in the wrong mode, omitting the Flatpak override or using a browser window without the intended Steam controller layout. Check the symptom that matches what you see.
The Edge entry is missing from Non-Steam
- Return to Desktop Mode and verify that Edge is installed in Discover.
- Open the Application Launcher, right-click Edge under Internet, and use Add to Steam again.
- Restart Steam in Gaming Mode after the shortcut has been added.
The Xbox page opens, but the Deck controls do nothing
- In Desktop Mode, rerun
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edgein Konsole, then typeexit. - Confirm that the shortcut’s controller configuration is Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad, not a generic desktop or keyboard template.
- Test a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller if the built-in controls are not detected. Xbox notes that game input support can vary.
The page is hard to read or does not fit as expected
- Check that the launch options still contain the complete window-size, scale and kiosk arguments.
- Make sure the arguments were appended after the existing
@@u @@text rather than replacing it. - Use the trackpad or touchscreen to operate the page while diagnosing the layout.
Streaming is blurry, delayed or disconnects
- Move to a reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network or wired Ethernet through a suitable dock or adapter.
- Use 20 Mbps as Xbox Wire’s recommended target for cloud gaming, understanding that throughput, interference, distance from the access point and household traffic all affect results.
- Check whether another device is consuming bandwidth and verify that the game is still available in your region and plan.
A game is not listed for cloud play
Cloud availability is title-specific. Xbox says its library and features vary by region and plan and can change, so confirm the current listing on the Xbox site instead of assuming that an installed or owned game is streamable.

Not for every title. Xbox lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate subscriptions as cloud-gaming options, while select free-to-play games can be available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
Whether a particular game requires a subscription, and whether monthly cloud-playtime limits apply, depends on Xbox’s current terms. Check the live plan and game pages before subscribing; historical prices or limits should not be treated as permanent.

Is Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck officially supported?
The cloud service itself is an Xbox offering, but Microsoft’s Edge-on-SteamOS route is not a supported native Deck application. Microsoft says the Edge Flatpak is community maintained and that it does not officially support Edge on SteamOS.
Xbox Wire’s December 19, 2025 overview calls Steam Deck support beta and describes the extra Desktop Mode and Edge setup. That status explains why browser updates, SteamOS changes or service updates can occasionally require you to repeat configuration steps.

The Deck method is useful when you want cloud games exposed inside Gaming Mode, but it trades convenience for a manual browser setup.

The Steam Deck shortcut is the appropriate choice when your priority is launching from Gaming Mode. If your priority is official platform integration, use a device and access method that Xbox currently lists as supported instead.
What should I remember after setup?
- Keep the shortcut’s launch options intact, including the kiosk URL and the documented scale values.
- Expect to use Desktop Mode again if you need to reinstall Edge, reapply the udev override or edit the shortcut.
- Cloud gaming does not remove regional, plan, title or account requirements.
- Streaming quality is determined by the network and service conditions as well as the Deck; the 20 Mbps recommendation is not a performance guarantee.
- Microsoft reported that overall Xbox Cloud Gaming hours were up 45% year over year in its December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire article. That statistic describes overall service usage, not Steam Deck performance or a promise of future availability.

Can I launch Xbox Cloud Gaming without adding Edge to Steam?
You can visit Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser from Desktop Mode, but that does not create the Gaming Mode library shortcut covered here. The documented Deck workflow uses the Edge Flatpak because its launch options and Steam controller mapping are designed for this entry point.
Will cloud games work when the Steam Deck is offline?
No. The shortcut opens a web service and must reach Xbox’s servers to authenticate and stream a game. An installed game can run offline, but a cloud session cannot.

Can I use a Bluetooth controller instead of the Deck controls?
Yes, Xbox’s general cloud-gaming guidance supports compatible controllers connected over Bluetooth or USB. Pair the controller with SteamOS, then verify that the shortcut’s controller layout sends its inputs to the browser.
Why does Xbox ask me to sign in again after I already used the shortcut?
Browser sessions can expire, and Xbox may request authentication after account-security changes or a cleared browser profile. Sign in again at Xbox.com when prompted; this does not indicate that the Steam shortcut itself was removed.
