Add the Remote control in Control Center, then select your Apple TV or compatible smart TV to connect. On iOS 18 and later, use Control Center’s Add Controls menu; on iOS 17 and earlier, Apple’s documented route is Settings > Control Center.
Add the Remote control in Control Center
- Open Control Center. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Tap Add Controls, then tap Add a Control.
- Scroll through the controls or search for Remote, then tap it to add it.
- Open the Remote control in Control Center, choose your Apple TV or supported smart TV, and enter the four-digit passcode on your iPhone if prompted.

Use the Settings route on iOS 17 and earlier
If your iPhone runs iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings > Control Center and tap Add beside Apple TV Remote. Then open Control Center, tap the remote, select your device, and enter the passcode if asked.
Which TVs can connect?
The Control Center remote works with Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, and AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. To use it with a compatible smart TV, add the television to the Home app and assign it to a room. The phone and target TV must also be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Fix connection problems
- Check Wi-Fi: Confirm the iPhone and TV are on the same network. Check the iPhone in Settings > Wi-Fi and Apple TV in Settings > Network.
- Update both devices: Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS update and tvOS update.
- Restart: Restart the iPhone and Apple TV or compatible television, then try connecting again.
- Check smart TV setup: If you are connecting to a smart TV rather than Apple TV, make sure it is AirPlay-compatible, added to the Home app, and assigned to a room.

Why the volume buttons may not control your TV
The volume buttons in Control Center control Apple TV volume when the Apple TV is configured with a HomePod, soundbar, or other AirPlay-compatible speakers. Without that audio setup, use the television’s own remote to adjust volume.

You do not need to buy a physical remote
The iPhone’s Control Center remote is a built-in software feature; adding it does not require purchasing a handheld remote. A physical Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote replacement is for a lost or broken handheld remote, a separate issue covered by Apple’s lost-remote guidance.
