Eclipse DLTK is a framework for building dynamic-language development tools, not a package that automatically adds editor features. To add syntax highlighting, code completion, and validation, implement each capability in your language plug-in: configure partitions and viewer coloring, provide a completion engine and proposal wiring, and—if you use an external checker—configure it as a DLTK validator. The official examples are historical, so verify their API and extension-point details against the Eclipse and DLTK versions you target.

What DLTK provides—and what your plug-in must provide

The Eclipse Foundation describes DLTK as a set of extensible frameworks for reducing the work involved in building development environments for dynamic languages. Tcl, Ruby, and Python IDEs are examples of implementations; DLTK itself does not supply every language’s syntax rules, completions, or validation logic.

Plan the work as three related but distinct integrations:

  • Highlighting: identify language regions and token categories, then connect them to editor coloring and user preferences.
  • Completion: implement language-aware proposals and connect their provider to the source viewer.
  • Validation: configure a compatible external checker, or implement another validation approach appropriate to your language plug-in.

Add syntax highlighting

Start with the editor and source viewer in your language plug-in. DLTK’s IDE creation guide describes document partitioning as part of the structure used for syntax highlighting. A partition identifies a kind of content—such as a comment or string—so the editor can treat that region appropriately. The tutorial defines comment and string partitions alongside the default content type; choose categories that match your language rather than copying those categories mechanically.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure partitions and scanners

Define the partition types your language needs, then configure the source viewer and DLTK text tools to recognize and process them. The partitioning and scanner configuration should reflect the syntax your editor intends to distinguish. For example, comments and strings may need their own regions, while other tokens can be handled through the default content type or additional categories.

Connect token rules to colors and preferences

Define color constants and highlighting rules for the token categories your editor supports. The tutorial demonstrates keyword, string, and comment highlighting and points to DLTK base classes for coloring configuration. Add preference support so users can customize those colors rather than making them immutable editor choices.

A practical implementation order is to decide the token and partition categories, define partitioning and scanners, configure the source viewer, add color constants and rules, and expose color preferences. Then check the editor against representative files in your language to catch cases your categories or scanners do not handle as intended.

Add code completion

Completion requires language-specific knowledge: DLTK provides integration points, while your implementation decides what suggestions are meaningful and when they apply. The DLTK IDE guide describes creating a completion engine and declaring it through the org.eclipse.dltk.core.completionEngine extension point. It also describes creating a completion proposal computer and configuring the source viewer to return the appropriate proposal computer.

Implement and wire the engine

  1. Decide what to suggest. Identify the language keywords, symbols, model elements, or context-sensitive items your editor can offer.
  2. Implement completion behavior. The DLTK Mini-HOWTO gives the API-level direction of extending ScriptCompletionEngine and contributing completion behavior through DLTK extension points.
  3. Register the engine. Contribute the implementation through org.eclipse.dltk.core.completionEngine, following the extension-point schema for your target release.
  4. Connect proposal processing to the editor. Configure the source viewer to provide the proposal computer used by your language editor.

These steps describe an integration path, not a guarantee of completion quality. The usefulness of the results depends on the language and model information your implementation can supply, as well as how it uses context to select proposals.

Integrate validation with an external checker

DLTK Validators can connect external scripts that inspect source files and report problems. The DLTK Validators User Guide documents a workflow in which you create a DLTK project, then open Window > Preferences > DLTK > Validators and add an External Checker.

Configure a checker

  1. In the Validators preferences, add an External Checker.
  2. Set a name and the executable command for the checker.
  3. Enter the arguments the checker needs, using %f as the documented wildcard for the input filename.
  4. Specify the file extensions to which the checker applies.
  5. Run the checker on applicable source files and inspect the reported problems in Eclipse.

The guide says detected problems are integrated into Eclipse workbench infrastructure. It also describes running checkers on selected files without building a project.

Choose a checker that fits your language

The guide’s ActiveState Tcl Checker example is specific to Tcl and includes settings for its executable path, working mode, and suppressed problems. For another language, identify a checker that is suitable for its source files, then confirm that the command, arguments, output, and execution behavior work in your target setup. The Tcl example alone does not establish compatibility with other tools or languages.

Verify API compatibility before adopting the examples

DLTK implementation pages are useful architectural references, but not necessarily current-release instructions. The IDE guide cites Eclipse 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 and DLTK 3.0; the validator guide and Mini-HOWTO are also historical. The available documentation does not establish a current-version compatibility matrix for these examples. Check the API documentation and extension-point definitions shipped with the exact Eclipse and DLTK versions you intend to support, and adapt the implementation accordingly.

For a user-facing example of the kinds of features a DLTK-based IDE may offer, the Lua Development Tools documentation lists syntax highlighting and scope-aware code completion. The project also states that LDT is no longer maintained, so treat it as an example of feature categories, not evidence of current maintenance or of what every DLTK implementation provides.
