Windows uses the PATH environment variable to find executable files when you type a command without its full folder path. For example, if C:Toolsbin is in PATH and that folder contains example.exe, you can run example from any Command Prompt window.
In Windows 11, the safest way to add, edit, or remove a PATH entry is the graphical Environment Variables editor. It keeps each folder as a separate entry and avoids accidentally overwriting the existing PATH.
Before editing PATH
Decide which PATH scope you need:
| Scope | Who it affects | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| User PATH | Only your Windows user account | A tool installed for your account or a folder you use personally |
| System PATH | All users, services, and applications on the computer | A machine-wide installation that should be available to everyone |
Use a folder, not the executable itself. For example, add C:Program FilesExampleAppbin, not C:Program FilesExampleAppbinexample.exe. Windows searches the directories in PATH for executable files.
How to add a folder to PATH in Windows 11
- Open Start, type Advanced system settings, and select the matching result.
- In System Properties, open the Advanced tab.
- Select Environment Variables….
- Under User variables for <your username>, select Path if you want the change to apply only to your account. To make it machine-wide, select Path under System variables instead.
- Select Edit….
- Select New.
- Enter the directory you want to add, such as
C:Toolsbin. - Select OK, then OK, and then OK again to close the remaining dialogs.
If Path does not exist in the selected section, select New… in the Environment Variables dialog, create a variable named Path, and enter the directory as its value. Normally, however, Windows already has a PATH variable.

Open Environment Variables with a Run command
You can go directly to the same settings window:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
SystemPropertiesAdvanced. - Press Enter.
- Select Environment Variables… on the Advanced tab.
How to edit an existing PATH entry
- Open Advanced system settings by searching from Start, or run
SystemPropertiesAdvanced. - Select Environment Variables….
- Choose Path under either User variables or System variables.
- Select Edit….
- Select the entry you want to change, then select Edit.
- Correct the folder path and select OK through all open dialogs.
Check the actual folder in File Explorer before saving. A PATH entry that points to a folder that was renamed, moved, or uninstalled will not help Windows find the command.
How to remove a PATH entry
- Open Environment Variables.
- Select Path in the correct user or system section.
- Select Edit….
- Select the unwanted directory.
- Select Delete, then select OK in each dialog.
Do not delete entries simply because you do not recognize them. Some installed applications and Windows components rely on PATH entries. If you are unsure, copy the existing PATH somewhere safe before changing it.
Apply and test the PATH change
PATH is copied into a process when that process starts. An already-open Command Prompt, PowerShell window, Windows Terminal tab, or graphical application keeps the old value.
- Close the terminal or application where you want to use the command.
- Open a new Command Prompt window.
- Display the PATH inherited by that window:
echo %PATH%
You can also use the built-in path command:
path
To check whether Windows can locate a particular executable, run:

You do not normally need to restart Windows. Closing and reopening the affected terminal or application is enough. A service or program that started before the edit may need to be restarted separately.
Temporarily change PATH in Command Prompt
The Command Prompt path command changes the command path only for the current Command Prompt process. It does not permanently edit the user or system environment.
To append a directory temporarily while preserving the current value, run:
path %PATH%;C:Toolsbin
The semicolon separates directories. This change disappears when that Command Prompt window closes.
To replace the PATH for the current Command Prompt window, run:

path C:Toolsbin
This removes the existing command paths from that process. The command path ; clears the command paths so cmd.exe searches only the current directory. These replacement forms can make normal commands unavailable, so use them only when that is intentional.
Using setx to permanently change PATH
Microsoft documents setx as a command-line method for permanently setting environment values. Without /m, it writes to the current user’s environment. With /m, it writes to the system environment and normally requires an elevated Command Prompt.
Examples:
setx PATH "%PATH%;C:Toolsbin"
setx PATH "%PATH%;C:Toolsbin" /m
However, the graphical editor is usually safer for PATH changes. setx has several failure modes:
- It updates future command windows, not the current Command Prompt or PowerShell process.
- It expands environment-variable references before writing. For example, a PATH reference such as
%JAVADIR%may be written as the directory’s current expanded value rather than preserved as a reference. - It has a 1,024-character limit when assigning a variable. If the resulting PATH is longer, it can be cropped and existing entries can be lost.
- It is easy to overwrite or duplicate a long PATH when constructing the value manually.
For a long or important PATH, use the separate-entry editor under Environment Variables. Do not use setx merely because a command-line method seems quicker.
PATH order, duplicates, and common mistakes
PATH order matters
Windows checks the current directory first, then searches PATH directories in their listed order. If two folders contain an executable with the same name, Windows uses the first matching one it finds.

For example, if both folders contain python.exe, the earlier folder can determine which Python installation runs when you type python. Use where python.exe to see which matches Windows finds.
Duplicate entries
Duplicate folders do not automatically invalidate PATH, but they add clutter and cause Windows to search the same location repeatedly. Remove duplicates when you are already reviewing the list, taking care not to remove a similar-looking but different directory.
Do not replace the entire PATH by accident
Adding only C:Toolsbin as the complete PATH can prevent Windows and installed programs from finding commands that previously worked. When adding a directory, use New in the graphical list so existing entries remain intact.
Check the correct scope
A user PATH change may not be visible to a service or another user. Conversely, a system PATH change affects a much wider range of software. If where finds no match, confirm that you edited the intended section and that the new terminal was opened after the change.
What to check when the command is not found
- Close every terminal window involved and open a new one.
- Run
where command-name.exeto check whether Windows can locate the file. - Confirm that the PATH entry is the directory containing the executable, not the executable’s full filename.
- Open the directory in File Explorer and verify that the executable still exists.
- Check the executable’s exact filename and extension. The application may not be named what you expect.
- Review PATH order with
echo %PATH%. Another copy of the executable earlier in PATH may be taking precedence. - Confirm that you edited User variables or System variables as appropriate.
To check your Windows edition and version, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications. The PATH and setx commands documented by Microsoft apply to Windows 11 as well as Windows 10.

FAQ
Do I need to restart Windows after changing PATH?
No. Close and reopen the terminal or application that needs the new PATH. New processes inherit the updated environment; processes that were already running retain the old value.
Should I edit User PATH or System PATH?
Use User PATH when only your account needs the command. Use System PATH when all users, services, and applications on the computer need it. Editing System variables may require administrator permission.
Should a PATH entry include the executable filename?
No. Add the directory containing the executable, such as C:Toolsbin, rather than C:Toolsbinexample.exe.
Why does where still report no match?
Check that you opened a new terminal, selected the correct PATH scope, entered the containing directory, and used the executable’s real filename. Also verify that the folder and executable still exist.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs setx PATH "%PATH%;new-folder" safe?
It can be risky for a long PATH. setx expands embedded variables, affects only future processes, and can crop values above 1,024 characters. The graphical PATH editor is safer for adding one folder.
Can I add a PATH entry temporarily?
Yes. In Command Prompt, run path %PATH%;C:Toolsbin. The change applies only to that Command Prompt process and disappears when the window closes.
The Bottom Line
For a normal Windows 11 PATH change, open Advanced system settings > Advanced > Environment Variables, select Path in the appropriate scope, choose Edit > New, and add the containing directory. Reopen your terminal and verify the result with where. Avoid replacing the existing PATH, and use setx cautiously because it can expand variables or truncate a long value.
