You cannot enter a custom meeting ID in the standard Microsoft Teams scheduling form. Teams generates the ID and, when required, a passcode when you create an online meeting; you can then find and share those details. The join link is usually the easiest way for participants to join.
This guide explains how to create a meeting, find its generated ID, share it, and join using the ID instead of the meeting link.
What you need to add a Teams meeting ID
A Teams meeting can have three separate pieces of join information:
| Detail | Used for |
|---|---|
| Meeting ID | Joining through Teams or the Teams web join page |
| Passcode | Verifying access when the meeting requires one |
| Conference ID | Joining by telephone with a dial-in number |
The conference ID is not the same as the Teams meeting ID. A telephone number and conference ID appear only if audio conferencing or PSTN conferencing is available and configured for the organizer’s account.

How to create a Teams meeting and generate its ID
On the Teams desktop or web app
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Select Calendar.
- Select a time slot or choose New.
- Enter the subject, date, time, and attendees.
- Turn on the Teams meeting option.
- Select Save.
Teams creates the online meeting and generates its join information. There is no separate meeting-ID box in the scheduling form. The exact form may vary between calendar experiences.
On the Teams mobile app
- Open the Teams app and tap Calendar.
- Tap New event.
- Enter a title.
- Tap Add participants and choose the invitees.
- Enter the remaining meeting information.
- Tap Done.
The meeting ID is generated as part of the online meeting. The mobile form does not provide a field for entering one manually.
How to find the Teams meeting ID and passcode
From Teams desktop or web
- Open Calendar.
- Open the meeting.
- Select Details.
- Select Show meeting info.
The meeting information displays the generated meeting ID and any required passcode. They may also appear in the meeting invitation email.
From the Teams mobile app
- Tap Calendar.
- Open the meeting.
- Open the meeting information.
- Tap Details > See more.
If you cannot find the details in the app, check the invitation email sent for the meeting.

Meeting ID: [generated meeting ID]
Passcode: [generated passcode, if required]
Join link: [official Teams join link]
Including the join link is recommended because it reduces typing and transcription mistakes.
Copy the official Teams join link
- Open or create the meeting in the Teams calendar.
- At the top of the meeting details, select Share.
- Select Copy join link.
- Paste the link into an email, Teams chat, website, or document.
For meetings scheduled after January 20, 2026—or after January 8, 2026, in some regions—the invitation may display the full meeting URL instead of an older friendly hyperlink. This changes how the invitation looks, not how participants join.
How to join a Teams meeting with an ID
Desktop or web app
- In Teams, select Calendar.
- Select the dropdown arrow beside Meet now.
- Select Join with an ID #.
- Enter the meeting ID and, if requested, the passcode.
- Join the meeting.
Older Teams instructions may call this option Join with an ID. The current desktop wording includes the hash symbol.
Mobile app
- Open Teams and tap Calendar.
- Tap More.
- Tap Join with meeting ID.
- Enter the meeting ID and, if requested, the passcode.
- Tap Join meeting.
From a browser without opening the Teams app
- Open Microsoft’s Teams meeting join page in a browser.
- Enter the Meeting ID.
- Enter the Passcode if the meeting requires one.
- Select Join meeting.
This option is useful when someone has the ID and any required passcode but not the original invitation link. Teams meetings are not currently supported in mobile web browsers, so use the Teams mobile app on a phone or tablet.

How to add telephone dial-in details
A Teams meeting ID does not automatically create phone access. To provide telephone access, the organizer’s account must have audio conferencing or PSTN conferencing configured.
When the feature is available:
- Schedule the meeting from Outlook; the dial-in number and conference ID are included automatically when available.
- Or schedule it in Teams while PSTN conferencing is enabled for the organizer.
If no telephone number appears, the organization may not have the necessary license or configuration. Microsoft also indicates that the invitation must be sent to at least one person before dial-in details and the join link appear.

Can you choose a custom Teams meeting ID or passcode?
Not in the normal Teams scheduling interface. Teams generates the meeting ID. For meetings created through Microsoft Graph, Microsoft also documents that passcodes are generated automatically and custom passcodes are not supported.

Common Teams meeting ID problems
| Problem | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Join with an ID # is missing | Open Calendar and use the dropdown beside Meet now. If the option is still unavailable, check that the meeting was created as an online Teams meeting and that the Teams meeting option is enabled. |
| The ID or passcode is rejected | Check for typing errors, confirm that the information belongs to the correct meeting, and make sure you did not enter a telephone conference ID instead of the Teams meeting ID. Some meetings also require an authorized work or school account or email verification. |
| Teams asks you to sign in | The organizer’s policy may block anonymous attendees. Sign in with the authorized work or school account, or ask the organizer or administrator about the meeting policy. |
| You remain in the lobby | The organizer has configured the lobby to require admission. Wait for the organizer or an authorized presenter to let you in. |
| The meeting is locked | The organizer locked the meeting after it started. Contact the organizer and ask them to unlock it. |
| No phone number is shown | Audio conferencing or PSTN conferencing is not configured or licensed for the organizer. This does not mean the Teams meeting ID is invalid. |
| End-to-end encryption blocks access | The organizer’s encryption settings may limit which participants can join. The organizer or administrator must adjust the meeting settings. |
The quickest way to share a Teams meeting
- Create the meeting from Calendar > New.
- Enable the Teams meeting option.
- Open the saved event and select Show meeting info.
- Copy the meeting ID and any required passcode if participants specifically need them.
- Select Share > Copy join link and share the link as the primary joining method.
FAQ
Can I add my own meeting ID in Microsoft Teams?
No. Standard Teams scheduling generates the meeting ID automatically. You can copy and share the generated ID, but you cannot normally replace it with a custom value.
Is the Teams meeting ID the same as the conference ID?
No. The meeting ID is used to join through Teams. The conference ID is used with a telephone dial-in number and is available only when audio conferencing is configured.
Do I need both a meeting ID and passcode?
Not always. The meeting ID is used to identify the meeting, while a passcode is needed when that meeting requires one. Follow the meeting details or invitation and enter a passcode if the join flow requests it.

- High-quality stereo speakers optimized for voice.
- Mute control with status light. Easily see, at a glance, whether you can be heard or not.

Why does my Teams meeting have no dial-in number?
The organizer’s account may not have PSTN or audio conferencing enabled. A missing phone number does not invalidate the Teams meeting ID.
Can I join a Teams meeting with only its ID?
Not always. If the meeting requires a passcode, you also need that passcode. The join link may be the simplest alternative.
Can I join a Teams meeting from a phone browser?
Microsoft currently does not support Teams meetings in mobile web browsers. Install or open the Teams mobile app instead.
The Bottom Line
Teams generates the meeting ID when you create an online meeting; there is no standard field for entering one yourself. Find it under the meeting’s details, share it with any required passcode—or, preferably, copy the official join link—and use Join with an ID # on desktop or Join with meeting ID on mobile.
