The most flexible way to add email capture to a Shopify landing page is Shopify Forms. Install the free Shopify Forms app, create an inline form, choose either a new Forms landing page or an existing page template, configure consent and the post-submit response, then activate the form and enable the Forms theme app embed. If your theme already has a newsletter section, that is a simpler alternative for basic signups.

Choose the right Shopify email-capture route

Shopify gives you two Forms placements and a theme-native option:

Route Best for What Shopify creates or requires
Forms dedicated landing page A focused campaign page with its own URL A new page and page template generated from the Forms app; you can edit the title, content and URL handle later.
Forms on an existing page Adding signup to a landing page, product page or other existing template A Forms block in the relevant theme template and the form’s six-digit ID.
Theme-native newsletter section A basic signup in a supported Online Store 2.0 or Horizon theme The theme’s built-in newsletter or footer signup section. If unavailable, consult the theme documentation or use an email marketing app.

Use Shopify Forms when you need configurable fields, consent choices, tags, analytics, discounts, segments or automation. Use the theme section when you only need a conventional newsletter field and your theme already provides it.

Before you start

  • Have Shopify admin access and a storefront theme you can edit.
  • Install Shopify Forms from the Shopify App Store. Shopify says it is free to install and use, but it is not automatically included with a Shopify plan.
  • Decide what value the visitor receives after subscribing, such as an offer, product updates or a downloadable resource.
  • Know which customer fields you genuinely need. Email is required for email-marketing consent; extra fields add friction.
  • Decide whether a successful submission should show a message or redirect to another URL.

Create an inline form in Shopify Forms

  1. In Shopify admin, open Apps > Forms.
  2. Select Create form, then choose Inline form.
  3. Add the fields you need. Keep the first version focused; email is the essential field for an email list.
  4. Configure the marketing-consent behavior, success message or redirect, styling, tags and any workflow connections.
  5. Save the form. A newly saved form is inactive until you turn it on.

Set marketing consent deliberately

Shopify Forms provides three relevant choices: subscribe on submission, subscribe only when a consent box is checked, or do not subscribe customers to marketing. Shopify’s guidance says promotional content should be sent only to customers who agreed to receive it. Add a clear consent disclaimer explaining how the address will be used.

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and store configuration. Shopify’s contact-information guidance notes that double opt-in may be relevant, including for some Germany-based setups; treat that as a compliance consideration, not a complete legal analysis. Make the wording and selected option match your actual email program and applicable law.

Choose the success behavior

Use a confirmation message when the visitor should remain on the page. Use a redirect when you need to deliver a dedicated thank-you page, explain next steps or show an incentive. Test the exact result on the storefront rather than assuming the saved setting is visible.

Option 1: Generate a dedicated landing page

  1. Open the form’s Placement settings.
  2. Choose Create landing page.
  3. Enter the page title and URL handle.
  4. Save the placement.

Shopify creates a new page using a new page template. You can edit the generated page’s title, content and handle later. This route is useful for campaign links because the signup experience has a page of its own instead of sharing a general template with unrelated content.

Check the generated page

  • Open the page from the storefront and confirm the form is visible.
  • Check that the headline explains the benefit of subscribing.
  • Submit a test address and verify the configured message or redirect.
  • Check the customer record and marketing-consent status in Shopify admin using a test address you control.

Option 2: Embed the form in an existing page template

  1. In the form’s Placement settings, choose Existing page.
  2. Copy the form’s six-digit ID.
  3. In Shopify admin, open Online Store > Themes, choose the theme you want to edit, and open the theme editor.
  4. Open the page template used by your landing page.
  5. Add the Forms block and enter the six-digit form ID.
  6. Save the template and preview the page.

The form appears on every page that uses that template. If the landing page uses a different template from the one you edited, it will not inherit the block; check the page’s assigned template before troubleshooting the form itself.

Prevent accidental site-wide placement

Templates can be shared. Before saving, confirm which pages use the selected template. If only one campaign page needs the form, assign that page a dedicated template rather than adding the block to a widely reused template.

Activate the form and enable the theme app embed

  1. Return to Apps > Forms and open the form’s management view.
  2. Turn the form on. Forms are inactive by default after creation.
  3. Open the theme editor’s app-embed controls.
  4. Install and enable the Forms theme app embed, then save.
  5. Reload the storefront in a private window and test the form.

An inactive form or a disabled Forms theme app embed can make a correctly configured block appear missing. Treat both activation and the embed as required steps, not optional cleanup.

Use your theme’s built-in newsletter section instead

Online Store 2.0 and Horizon themes include a newsletter signup section or footer signup option. In the theme editor, open the relevant template or footer, add or enable the newsletter section, edit its heading and supporting copy, and save. The exact labels vary by theme.

This route is appropriate when the theme’s controls meet your needs. If the theme does not include a newsletter section, Shopify suggests checking the theme’s documentation or using an email marketing app. Do not paste instructions from a different theme without verifying its implementation.

Connect signups to follow-up work

After collection, Shopify Forms can support analytics, customer tagging, segments, discounts and automations. Shopify Messaging can send campaigns and automations to subscribers. Shopify Flow provides templates for processing Forms submissions, including sending marketing emails after a submission creates a metaobject.

Design the hand-off

  • Use a tag that identifies the source or campaign when you need segmentation.
  • Keep the consent state visible in your customer data and avoid treating every submitted address as marketing-subscribed.
  • Build the welcome message around the promise made on the landing page.
  • Test the automation with a controlled address before publishing a campaign.

If an existing customer submits a Forms form with a different email or phone number, Shopify says the saved contact details are not modified. Other fields, including marketing consent, might not be updated either. Do not use a form submission as an assumption that an existing customer profile has been overwritten.

Test the complete visitor journey

  1. Open the published URL on desktop and mobile widths.
  2. Confirm labels, required fields, consent language and button text are readable.
  3. Submit an address that is not already on your list.
  4. Verify the success message or redirect, customer record, consent state and any tag.
  5. Repeat with an existing customer address and check that Shopify’s existing-contact behavior is understood.
  6. Submit an invalid address and confirm the error is clear without losing already entered data.
  7. Test the page in a private window after clearing any cached preview state.

Troubleshooting Shopify email forms

The form does not appear

Confirm the form is active, the Forms theme app embed is enabled, and the page uses the template where you added the Forms block. Also verify that the block contains the correct six-digit ID.

The form appears in the editor but not on the live page

Save the theme changes, open the published theme rather than an unpublished preview, and test the exact storefront URL. A page can use a different template than the one currently open in the editor.

The form submits but no marketing email is sent

Check the selected consent option and the customer’s consent status. A submission does not automatically authorize promotional content when the form is configured to require a checked consent box or to avoid marketing subscription. Review the downstream Shopify Messaging or automation setup separately.

The confirmation does not match the offer

Reopen the form settings and inspect whether the success action is a message or redirect. Test again from the storefront, including the final destination URL.

An existing customer’s details did not change

This can be expected. Shopify says a different email or phone submitted through Forms does not modify the customer’s saved contact details; other fields may also remain unchanged. Review the customer record and use an appropriate profile-management workflow.

The signup works on one page but not another

Check template assignments. An inline Forms block is rendered on pages using the edited template, not automatically on every page in the store.

Performance, reliability and maintenance notes

  • Keep the form short and put the value proposition next to the field rather than adding unnecessary questions.
  • Review the page after theme changes; app embeds and template blocks can be disabled or moved during redesigns.
  • Use a real storefront test after changing consent, redirect or automation settings.
  • Document the form ID, assigned template and consent choice so another administrator can maintain the page safely.
  • Recheck Shopify’s current documentation when labels or placement controls differ; platform interfaces can change.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of the finished landing page for QA, documentation or a campaign hand-off, ScreenshotNeo can capture the storefront with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A direct call looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-store.myshopify.com/pages/email-signup -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://your-store.myshopify.com/pages/email-signup"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://your-store.myshopify.com/pages/email-signup' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put more than one Shopify Forms signup on a landing page?

Yes. Add the relevant Forms block or placement for each form, but keep the offers and consent wording distinct so visitors understand what each submission does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does creating a Forms landing page replace my existing Shopify page?

No. Shopify creates a new page and page template. Your existing pages remain in place, and the generated page’s title, content and handle can be edited later.

Is Shopify Forms automatically available on every Shopify plan?

No. Shopify says the app is free to install and use, but it does not come installed automatically with a Shopify plan.

The Bottom Line

For a dedicated campaign URL, create the page from Shopify Forms; for an existing landing page, add the Forms block to its template. Activate the form, enable the Forms theme app embed, test consent and the success path, and use a theme newsletter section only when its controls are sufficient.
