Use an AI coding assistant to draft tests inside your repository’s existing test framework, but do not send generated code straight to CI unchecked. First identify the project’s test commands and conventions, describe the behavior the tests must verify, review the assertions, run the tests locally, and then confirm the pipeline discovers them. This keeps AI-generated tests tied to requirements rather than assumptions—and makes CI results useful instead of merely green.
What does it mean to add AI-generated tests to CI/CD?
It means using an AI coding assistant to help write tests, then including the tests in the project’s normal automated build-and-test process. The assistant can draft cases; your team still defines the intended behavior, checks the assertions, and decides whether the tests are reliable enough to merge.
That distinction matters. A test can compile, pass, and still fail to check the behavior a requirement calls for. A generated test that has not been executed is unverified, and a locally passing test that CI never discovers is not protecting changes in the pipeline. The objective is not to maximize generated test code. It is to add reviewed, repeatable checks for behavior the team actually wants to preserve.
The workflow below is tool- and provider-neutral. The cited guidance does not prescribe one universal CI provider, runner, YAML configuration, AI model, or framework. Start with the repository’s existing setup and make changes only where the project needs them.

How do I prepare a repository before asking AI to write tests?
Give the assistant a grounded picture of the project before requesting code. Find the current framework, test locations, commands, and a nearby example, then establish what already passes or fails.
- Locate the test project and framework. Check the repository’s established test directories and project files. Identify whether the relevant tests are unit, integration, end-to-end, or a mixture; do not assume the repository uses a familiar default.
- Find the real commands. Determine how to run one test or file and how to run the related suite. Use the project’s existing runner and scripts unless there is a concrete reason to introduce another setup.
- Read a representative test. Choose an existing test that shows the project’s naming, assertion style, fixture setup, and use of mocks. This helps generated code fit the repository rather than create a parallel convention.
- Run a baseline. Run the relevant existing tests before adding anything and note failures. That gives you a way to distinguish a new failure from a problem that was already present.
- Check how CI invokes tests. Find the pipeline’s current test command and how it selects test files or projects. If the repository-specific path is unclear, ask for help locating it rather than guessing where a new test belongs.
Microsoft’s VS Code walkthrough similarly emphasizes repository discovery, checking requirements, reviewing generated cases, and validating an initial set before expanding it: Test existing code with AI. VS Code also documents support for unit, integration, and end-to-end testing through editor actions or chat, with optional project instructions for frameworks and conventions: VS Code testing documentation.
How should I describe the behavior I want tested?
Describe the requirement in terms of inputs, observable outcomes, boundaries, and error behavior. Do not ask the assistant to infer undocumented business rules from the implementation alone: code shows what the system currently does, not necessarily what it is supposed to do.
Write a small, testable behavior statement
Choose one function or module and state what it should do. For example, an illustrative requirement might say: “When a submitted quantity is zero, the function rejects the request with the documented validation error; positive quantities are accepted.” The exact rule and error must come from your product or technical requirements, not from this example.
For the chosen behavior, make explicit:
- Which inputs and relevant conditions matter.
- What result, state change, or externally observable response is expected.
- Which boundary values should be checked.
- What should happen for invalid or exceptional inputs.
- Which dependencies may be replaced with fixtures or mocks—and which real behavior must remain under test.
Keep the request bounded. A focused first set is easier to inspect and debug than a request to test an entire application. If the behavior is security-sensitive, identify the applicable security requirement explicitly rather than treating the source code as the specification. OWASP SAMM’s guidance describes moving from ad hoc AI-assisted verification toward systematically deriving test cases from security requirements and automating them as regression tests: OWASP SAMM Guidance for AI-Assisted Development.
What prompt should I use to generate a focused first set?
Use a prompt that provides repository context and asks for a limited set of cases tied to a stated requirement. Treat the following as an adaptable example, not as a substitute for your project’s actual rules:

Inspect the existing tests for [module or function] and follow their framework, naming, assertion, fixture, and mock conventions. Do not change production code or CI files.
Requirement:
[State the expected behavior, including relevant inputs, boundaries, and error behavior.]
Please propose a small set of tests for this requirement. For each test, explain the input and the observable outcome it checks. Keep expected values independent from the implementation under test. Identify any assumptions or missing requirements instead of inventing them. Then show the test changes and the repository command to run them.
Replace the bracketed text with project-specific details. If a requirement is ambiguous, clarify it before asking for test code. Ask the assistant to explain the expected outcome of each proposed case so a reviewer can compare the test to the requirement rather than judge it only by whether it looks plausible.
For a test-first workflow, VS Code documents a red-green-refactor cycle: write a failing test for expected behavior, implement the smallest change that satisfies it, then refactor while keeping the tests green. See Set up a test-driven development flow in VS Code. That is a workflow option, not a requirement to change production code whenever you are adding tests to existing behavior.
How do I tell whether a generated test is trustworthy?
Review each assertion against the requirement and verify that the test observes behavior that matters. A plausible test name or passing result is not enough.
Check the expected result independently
Expected values should come from the stated requirement or an independently established example—not from calling the same function under test to compute the answer. If actual and expected values share the same flawed logic, the test can pass while preserving a defect.
Make sure the test reaches the behavior it claims to check
Inspect fixtures and mocks. A mock can isolate an external dependency, but it should not replace the behavior the test is meant to verify. Confirm that setup actually reaches the relevant branch, and that the assertion checks an observable result rather than an internal detail that can change without changing the contract.
Look for omissions and coupling
Consider whether the requirement calls for boundary or negative cases in addition to a typical success case. Check that tests do not depend on another test running first, on shared mutable state, or on an unstated execution order. Review whether a change to an implementation detail would break the test even when the required behavior remains correct.

GitHub’s guidance on increasing test coverage also stresses requirements-based cases and review of generated output: Increasing test coverage in your company with GitHub Copilot. Coverage can help identify code that tests do not reach, but it cannot by itself establish that assertions encode the right behavior.
How do I run generated tests before adding them to CI?
Run one focused selection first, diagnose the result, then run the related suite. This separates errors in the generated test from failures elsewhere and reveals interactions before the new tests enter the normal pipeline.
- Run the new test using the repository’s existing targeted command. Use the command you found during repository discovery; syntax varies by framework and project.
- Read failures rather than asking the assistant to make them disappear. Determine whether the problem is a setup or compilation error, an incorrect expectation, a mismatch between requirement and implementation, or an existing defect.
- Revise the test only when the requirement supports the change. Do not weaken or delete a meaningful assertion just to obtain a green result. If the implementation appears inconsistent with the requirement, resolve that discrepancy with the responsible team.
- Run the related test suite. Check for interactions with fixtures, shared state, or other tests after the targeted case passes.
- Review the final diff. Confirm the accepted tests are in the established location and that unrelated production or configuration changes have not slipped in.
A test that the assistant generated but that nobody ran remains unverified. VS Code’s walkthrough recommends starting with a validated initial set and expanding after checking it, rather than treating generation as proof of correctness.

How do I make sure CI discovers and runs the tests?
Put accepted tests in the project’s established test structure and confirm that the pipeline’s existing test command discovers them. Do not assume that adding a test file automatically changes what CI runs.
- Check the test selection rules used by the repository’s normal CI command. Some projects run a whole test project; others select particular folders, patterns, or stages.
- Place the tests where the existing framework and project conventions expect them.
- Run the same test command locally that CI uses, where possible, and verify the new tests appear in its results.
- Inspect the pipeline result for the change and confirm the tests actually executed—not merely that the overall job completed.
- If the tests are not discovered, correct their location, naming, project inclusion, or selection configuration according to the repository’s existing setup.
There is no universal YAML snippet or provider-specific recipe established by the cited guidance. The right configuration depends on the project’s runner and pipeline. Avoid broad CI rewrites for a test-only change; first find the narrowest adjustment that makes the intended tests part of the established path.
What extra safeguards do security tests and CI changes need?
Apply heightened human review when generated tests concern security-critical behavior or when AI-generated changes touch pipeline, build, or deployment files. Passing tests are useful evidence, but they do not establish security confidence on their own.

Derive security cases from explicit requirements
State the security property to verify—for example, an authentication, authorization, input-validation, encoding, or encryption requirement. Review whether each test checks the intended protection rather than merely matching the implementation’s current details. OWASP’s secure-coding guidance identifies adversarial cases such as invalid inputs, expired tokens, malformed payloads, boundaries, and concurrent access as areas to consider: OWASP Secure Coding with AI.

Review generated pipeline edits as sensitive changes
Check any workflow or build/deployment diff for added network access, downloads, or command execution. OWASP recommends explicit review for pipeline changes and pinning third-party GitHub Actions to commit SHAs rather than mutable tags. Keep generated workflow edits separate from test-code changes where practical, so reviewers can see exactly what changed and why.
GitHub’s responsible-use guidance likewise says agent-generated content should be reviewed and tested before merge, with secure coding and code-review practices still applying: GitHub Copilot Agents responsible use. Do not grant generated code an exception from the same review rules used for human-written code.
How can I make future AI-generated tests consistent with the repository?
Record the project’s stable testing conventions in repository instructions, then continue to review individual results. Useful instructions include the framework, test locations, commands, naming style, fixtures, mock boundaries, and security or review safeguards.
Keep those instructions aligned with the actual repository. If the test runner or conventions change, update the guidance so future requests do not teach the assistant a stale workflow. Instructions make recurring context easier to provide, but they are not enforcement: they cannot guarantee that every generated assertion is correct or that CI discovers every new test.

- Repository compatibility: Can it work with the project’s language, test framework, fixtures, and established conventions?
- Reviewability: Can reviewers trace cases to requirements and inspect expected results, boundaries, and negative cases?
- Execution: Can the team run the output with its existing commands and verify that CI discovers it?
- Security controls: Can the team apply heightened review to sensitive tests and changes to pipeline files?
- Tool-specific claims: Verify current vendor documentation for the team’s edition and environment; capabilities and interfaces can change.
For example, Microsoft documents a .NET-specific Visual Studio flow that creates a separate test project, builds generated tests, attempts to address errors, and reruns them. That page was last updated February 17, 2026: Generate and run unit tests using GitHub Copilot testing for .NET. It describes a particular vendor feature, not a behavior to expect from every AI assistant.
What should I do when the workflow fails?
Use the failure to identify which part of the process needs attention; do not treat every red test as an instruction to change the test.
- The test will not build: Compare its imports, project placement, and framework usage with an existing test. Check whether the test project includes the new file.
- The test fails immediately: Compare the assertion with the requirement and inspect setup. The failure may expose an incorrect expectation, a test setup problem, or a behavior defect.
- The test passes locally but not in CI: Compare the local command and environment with the pipeline’s test command and execution context. Confirm CI actually selected the new test.
- The test passes but seems unhelpful: Check whether it asserts a meaningful observable outcome and whether its expected value is independent of the code under test.
- The assistant changes workflow files unexpectedly: Review the diff as a separate sensitive change, undo unrelated edits, and require the project’s normal approval before keeping pipeline changes.
- The requirement is unclear: Stop and get the intended behavior clarified rather than asking the assistant to guess.
These checks keep debugging focused: correct the source of the problem, whether that is setup, requirement ambiguity, implementation behavior, or CI discovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI-generated tests be used for end-to-end testing?
They can be useful for end-to-end cases when the assistant can work from clear user-visible requirements and the project’s existing conventions. Keep the scope tied to an observable workflow; a generated test should not be treated as proof that all real-world usage paths are covered.
Does a passing AI-generated test prove the feature is correct?
No. A passing test shows only that the current code satisfies that test’s assertions under the conditions in which it ran. The assertion still needs to represent the intended requirement, and coverage or a green pipeline cannot establish that on its own.
Should AI create a separate test project?
Follow the repository’s established structure rather than creating one by default. Some vendor workflows support a separate project—for example, Microsoft documents that approach for a specific .NET Copilot feature—but that does not make it necessary or suitable for every language or repository.
