To show a UPI QR code on a YouTube live stream, get the QR image from the UPI app, bank or merchant provider for the account that should receive payments, then add it to a scene in an encoder that supports image or graphic overlays. Position it clearly and check it in the YouTube Live Control Room before going live. YouTube does not generate a UPI QR code or provide a dedicated UPI QR button.
1. Get the right UPI QR code
Choose the receiving account first. The QR should belong to the person or business you intend viewers to pay; do not use an unrelated QR or one whose payee you cannot verify.
Personal UPI QR
For a personal account, find the QR in the relevant UPI app or bank service and save or share its image. NPCI’s BHIM guidance says users can view a static QR in their profile and share or download it. The exact menu name depends on the app.
Merchant UPI QR
If you accept payments as a merchant, use the QR supplied for your merchant setup. NPCI says a merchant needs to partner with an acquiring bank, which provides the UPI infrastructure. A personal receiving QR should not be presented as an officially onboarded merchant QR.

2. Add the QR as an encoder overlay
YouTube distinguishes mobile, webcam and encoder workflows for going live and identifies an encoder as the route for adding overlays and graphics. The QR image-source steps below are a practical way to use that overlay capability, not a built-in YouTube UPI feature. Controls and labels vary by encoder, so consult its current help for the image or graphic source option.
- Open the scene or layout used for the live stream. In the encoder, add the saved QR image as a visual, image or graphic source. The exact control name depends on the encoder.
- Size and place the image. Keep the full QR visible, with enough size and contrast to scan. Avoid cropping it or placing it over captions, gameplay details or other important content. Small or compressed overlays may be difficult to scan on a viewer’s screen.
- Preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing and previewing encoder streams. Check that the QR appears in the broadcast layout and is not obscured or distorted.
- Try scanning from another device. Where practical, scan the preview with a second device and confirm that the displayed payee is the intended recipient. Do not assume it will scan on every device, playback resolution or screen size.
- Explain the QR to viewers. Say whose account it pays and remind viewers to verify the payee and amount in their UPI app before confirming.
3. Protect viewers from payment scams
Make clear that viewers should never tell you or anyone else their UPI PIN or OTP. NPCI warns that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” A viewer should not enter a PIN to receive money. If a payment request or screen asks them to enter a PIN, they should verify what action they are authorizing in their UPI app before proceeding.

4. When this method will not work as expected
- No custom image or graphic source: The chosen mobile or webcam workflow may not offer an overlay layer. Use an encoder that supports visual sources, or check the app’s current documentation for available options.
- QR is hard to scan: Increase its on-screen size, ensure it has not been cropped, and check the preview from another device. Recheck after changing stream layout or resolution.
- Wrong payee appears: Remove the overlay and replace it with a QR from the intended account or merchant provider. Verify the payee in the payment app before restarting the broadcast.
- Controls differ from these directions: Encoder menus and supported browser or image sources can change. Follow the encoder’s current instructions rather than assuming a YouTube-wide button or label exists.
