List the side hustle as its own LinkedIn Experience position, separate from your main job. Choose a truthful relationship label such as Freelance, Self-employed or Contract; use your real business name or “Self-employed” as the organization; add accurate dates; and describe services and verifiable outcomes without revealing confidential information.
Before saving, check your employment agreement and conflict-of-interest rules. Match the entry to your resume, and switch off Notify network if you do not want LinkedIn to broadcast the change.
Why a separate Experience entry is the clearest approach
A side hustle is professional experience, but it is not automatically employment by your primary company or by every client. A separate position gives readers a clean timeline: one organization employs you, while another relationship covers independent work. Combining the two can make clients appear to be your employer, make your employer appear to endorse the work, or make your dates impossible to interpret.

Check your obligations before editing your profile
LinkedIn cannot decide whether your side work is permitted. Read the documents and policies that govern your particular job before publishing an entry.
- Employment agreement: Look for moonlighting, outside-work approval, exclusivity, working-time and use-of-equipment clauses.
- Conflict rules: Check restrictions involving competitors, customers, suppliers, regulated activities or use of your employer’s relationships.
- Confidentiality and intellectual property: Do not reuse source code, designs, customer data, pricing, internal metrics, strategy or work created under your employer’s rights.
- Professional and local rules: Licensing, tax, immigration, public-sector ethics or industry regulations can impose additional disclosure requirements.
- Practical separation: Use separate accounts, tools, calendars and storage when your agreement or policy requires it, and perform the work outside paid employer time.
Do not treat a carefully worded LinkedIn entry as permission. If a real dispute or conflict exists, obtain advice from a qualified employment lawyer or another appropriate professional in your jurisdiction. A LinkedIn subject-matter expert quoted in Yale career guidance put the platform point plainly: “No employer can make you post a position in your experience section.” That does not override a contract, a workplace rule or local law.
How to add the position on LinkedIn
Labels can move as LinkedIn updates its interface, but the documented desktop route is:
- Open LinkedIn and select Me.
- Choose View Profile.
- Select Add profile section.
- Open Core, then choose Add position.
- Complete the title, employment type, organization, location, dates and description.
- Review the visibility and notification controls, then select Save.
You can add more than one position. On mobile, the labels and placement may differ from the desktop path, so look for the add-position control in the Experience section and verify every field before saving. LinkedIn’s profile and notification settings determine how your profile changes and updates are seen by other people.
Complete each field truthfully

Never select Employee merely because it looks familiar. If you worked through an agency, staffing company or other intermediary, name the organization that actually engaged you and describe the relationship accurately. If the engagement was a fixed-term contract, Contract is generally clearer than Freelance, provided that matches your agreement and LinkedIn’s available choices.
Write a description that answers the reader’s questions
A useful description can be built in three parts:
- Service sentence: Say who you help and what you deliver.
- Evidence: Add one or two outcomes, deliverables or capabilities that you can verify. Use ranges or anonymized results only when you are allowed to disclose them.
- Boundary sentence: If accurate, state that projects are independent, scheduled outside primary employment and handled with separate tools and accounts.
Keep the wording factual rather than promotional. A client list is not required; a short description of industries, project types or anonymized outcomes is often more useful and safer.

Example: a substantial named engagement
Contract accessibility consultant — Your Studio LLC

Audited a customer-facing web application, documented prioritized issues and delivered remediation guidance under a fixed-term services agreement. Client name and screenshots are omitted because permission was not granted for public disclosure.
Only identify a client when the contract and the client permit public identification. Otherwise describe the sector or project type without details that could identify the customer.
Make overlapping dates easy to understand
Concurrent employment and freelance work is not inherently misleading. The problem is unexplained overlap. Put the independent role in its own entry, use month-and-year dates, and describe the limited scope. Do not move freelance achievements into the employer’s position simply because the dates overlap.
Mark a side hustle as current only while you are actively accepting or completing work. If you paused the practice, enter an end month rather than leaving a stale “Present” label. For recurring seasonal work, use the actual active period and explain the recurring arrangement in one sentence.

Choose one umbrella entry or several project entries

Start with one umbrella entry when in doubt. Add a separate project only if it is substantial, permissioned and relevant to the work you want next. Use About or Featured for a portfolio or case study instead of turning the Experience timeline into an advertisement.
Keep your headline from implying that you left your job
LinkedIn may offer to update your headline from current experience. You do not have to accept that suggestion. If your primary role is still the main professional identity, keep it first in the headline and let the side hustle appear in Experience and, if useful, About or Featured.
Put the side hustle in the headline only when it is central to the work you are seeking and you are comfortable with employers, colleagues and clients seeing that emphasis. A readable headline can name the primary specialty first, followed by a short independent-work descriptor; it does not need to list every service.

Control whether LinkedIn announces the change
Before saving, review the Notify network control. Turn it off if you do not want contacts alerted to the added position. When enabled, LinkedIn can send a notification to your network for each job added. Disabling the announcement does not make the entry private: people who view your profile may still see it according to your profile visibility settings.
If you are editing several fields, check the notification control each time. Also review profile visibility and notification settings after saving, because those settings govern how your profile and updates are presented to other people.
Synchronize LinkedIn with your resume
Dates, titles and the high-level story should agree across your profile and resume. Recruiters do not want to discover a materially different account in one document. You do not need to copy every LinkedIn sentence into the resume, but the relationship label, time period and major outcomes should be consistent.

- Use the same start and end months unless one document intentionally uses years only.
- Describe the work as freelance, self-employed or contract in both places when that is the relationship.
- Use the same level of anonymization for clients and outcomes.
- Do not claim that a client employed you if you provided services through your own business.
- Remove or update the entry in both documents when the practice ends or its scope changes.
Protect confidential information while showing credible results
Public proof does not require a public client roster. You can describe a sector, audience, deliverable or measurable improvement without naming the organization. For example, “Created onboarding content for a regulated software provider” communicates the work while omitting a restricted name. Do not combine several details that make an anonymous client identifiable, and do not publish screenshots, internal metrics or proprietary methods without permission.
Use outcomes you can substantiate. If a result belongs to a team, say what you personally delivered rather than claiming the entire business result. If a metric is subject to a nondisclosure agreement, substitute a non-identifying description or omit it.

Making the side hustle look like a second full-time job
Symptom: A generic title, no scope and overlapping dates leave readers wondering whether you abandoned your primary role.
Fix: Add the relationship word to the title, describe the service and state the limited or project-based scope when true.
Listing each client as an employer
Symptom: A client appears as a company in Experience even though you invoiced through your own practice.
Fix: Use your real business or “Self-employed” as the organization and mention clients only in the description when permission exists. Create a client-specific entry only when that client directly engaged you in a relationship that the title accurately describes.
Using an impressive but inaccurate employment type
Symptom: The entry says employee when the agreement was independent contracting.
Fix: Select the option that matches the contract and explain the arrangement plainly.

Symptom: “Present” suggests ongoing work that ended months ago.
Fix: Enter the actual end month and update the description if the practice has changed.

Revealing restricted information
Symptom: A case study includes a client name, internal figure, code sample or employer asset that you cannot publish.
Fix: Remove it, anonymize the context and use a general outcome only when that still complies with the agreement.
Broadcasting an unwanted announcement
Symptom: Colleagues receive a profile-change notification immediately after the edit.
Fix: Turn off Notify network before saving future changes. Remember that the profile itself may remain visible.
Special situations
You have no formal business name
You do not need to invent a company. Use your legal sole-proprietor or studio name if you have one; otherwise “Self-employed” is clearer than a made-up employer. Do not create a company page merely to make the entry look official.
Your side hustle is inactive but may return
End the current position when active work stops. You can preserve the history with an end date and explain the type of work completed. Reopen the dates only when you genuinely resume the practice.
Your side work is volunteer or board service
LinkedIn supports volunteer and board experience in Experience, but label the relationship as it actually was. Do not call unpaid service freelance employment, and do not place it under a company that did not engage you.
You work through an agency or intermediary
Name the organization that contracted with you, not a downstream customer that never employed you. In the description, identify the project or client only to the extent your agreement permits.
A final pre-publication checklist
- The title includes an accurate relationship label.
- The organization is your real practice, intermediary or other actual contracting organization.
- Employment type, location and dates match your records.
- The current-role checkbox reflects whether work is active now.
- The description states services and verifiable outcomes without confidential details.
- Any client name, logo, metric or work sample has the necessary permission.
- Dates and high-level outcomes match your resume.
- Your employment agreement, confidentiality terms and conflict rules permit the activity or you have obtained appropriate advice.
- Notify network is set according to whether you want an announcement.
- The headline still reflects the professional identity you want employers to see first.
Bottom line
A truthful, separate Experience entry is the least confusing way to show freelance work while remaining employed. Label the relationship, identify the correct organization, use accurate dates, describe scope and outcomes, protect confidential information, synchronize your resume and control notifications. Those steps make the timeline understandable without promising that a profile entry can override an employment contract or prevent an employer from objecting to the underlying activity.
