Activating a Microsoft 365 or Office product key is usually a one-time browser task. The important part is using the correct redemption page and signing in with the Microsoft account that should own the license. After redemption, Microsoft links the product to that account, so future installations normally use Services & subscriptions instead of the 25-character key.
This guide covers consumer Microsoft 365, retail Office, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Workplace Discount Program purchases, Microsoft Store orders, common activation errors, and changing the key on an existing Office installation.
Before you activate the key
Check what you bought and where it came from. The standard consumer setup page is intended for Microsoft 365 for home and retail versions of Office, including Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, Office 2016, and listed individual applications. Business keys and some organization-provided licenses use different processes.

A product key is normally a 25-character code. Enter it without hyphens when Microsoft asks for it. If you purchased Microsoft 365 directly from Microsoft, you may not have a key at all; direct subscriptions generally use account-based licensing. Retail Microsoft 365 cards can contain a redeemable key.

Activate a Microsoft 365 or retail Office key

Open www.office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup in a browser.

Select Sign in. Use the Microsoft account that should own the license. If you do not have one, select the option to create an account.

Enter the 25-character product key without hyphens when the product-key field appears.

Follow the remaining prompts to finish redeeming the product.

Some keys are entered automatically. If the setup page does not show a field for a product key, Microsoft says the key has already been supplied to the page or entered automatically. Continue through the prompts rather than trying to force another key into the process.
Why the Microsoft account matters
Redemption associates the license with the account you used. This is a one-time process: after it succeeds, the key is not normally needed to install or reinstall Office. To install the product later, go to account.microsoft.com, sign in with that same account, open Services & subscriptions, find the associated Office product, and select the installation option.
Redeem a Microsoft 365 Business Standard key
Do not use the consumer Office.com/setup page for a Microsoft 365 Business Standard key. Microsoft documents a separate page for these keys:
- Go to signup.microsoft.com/get-started/setupkey.
- Enter the product key without hyphens.
- Select Next.
- Complete the business setup prompts.
A Microsoft 365 business key cannot be entered on the consumer Office.com/setup redemption page. If the consumer page reports that it cannot find the product key, using the wrong redemption page may be the reason.

Redeem a Workplace Discount Program purchase
These instructions apply to Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, and Project Professional obtained through Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program, formerly called the Home Use Program.
When the Sign in to set up Office window appears, select the small link labeled I don’t want to sign in or create an account. Enter the product key without hyphens and continue through the setup prompts. This is a special path and does not follow the usual account-first consumer redemption flow.
Find the key for a Microsoft Store purchase
If you bought a one-time Office purchase or an individual Office app from the Microsoft Store, retrieve it from the account used for the order:
- Go to www.microsoftstore.com and sign in.
- Select your name in the upper-right corner.
- Select Order History.
- Find the Office one-time purchase or individual Office app.
- Select Install Office to display the product key. This first action displays the key; it does not install Office.
- Select Install Office again in the product-key window.
- On the Hi. Let’s get started screen, follow the prompts to sign in again and associate the product with your Microsoft account.
What happens when a key has already been used?
The message This product key has already been used usually means the key was redeemed successfully in the past. It cannot be redeemed again, and you should not share it with someone else.

Stop retrying the code at Office.com/setup. Instead, sign in at account.microsoft.com, open Services & subscriptions, and look for the Office or Microsoft 365 product associated with the account. If it is not there, try the other Microsoft accounts you may have used during redemption.
For Microsoft 365 Family, do not give the product key to another person for sharing. Invite them through the subscription-sharing procedure associated with your Microsoft account. Sending them the redeemed key produces the same already-used error.
Microsoft 365 Family renewal limits
Redeeming another Microsoft 365 Family subscription on the same account extends the subscription term, up to a maximum of five years. It does not add more devices or increase the included storage. The account remains the place where the subscription is managed.
Common activation errors and their fixes

Region-related subscription errors
Microsoft 365 subscription keys must generally be redeemed in the country or region where they were purchased. For a cross-region subscription error, Microsoft lists microsoft.com/redeem as an alternative redemption location.

If the existing subscription was created in one region and the extension key was bought in another, Microsoft says you can redeem the new key to a different Microsoft account, or wait until at least one day after the existing subscription expires before trying to use the same account.
Other account and license limits
Microsoft permits up to 25 one-time purchases of Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 2019 on one Microsoft account. Further redemptions require another Microsoft account.
A volume-license key supplied by a school or employer cannot activate a retail edition such as Home & Student, Home & Business, or Professional through the consumer setup page. Also, a Windows product key printed on a PC sticker is normally a Windows key, not an Office key.
Browser checks when setup will not finish
The activation page requires JavaScript. Cookie blocking can also prevent setup from completing. Enable JavaScript and allow cookies for the Microsoft pages involved, then retry the process in an up-to-date browser. If the issue continues, temporarily test in another browser or a private window after confirming that the account and key are correct.

Identify the Microsoft account linked to Office
The full product key is not displayed inside Office. To identify the account currently used for activation:
- Open an Office app such as Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account.
- Look below the product name for Belongs to.
The account shown there is the one associated with the installed license. A key displayed on the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page may differ from the key printed on a product card or receipt. Microsoft says this is normal because they are different types of keys.
Activate Office without a printed key
Most versions of Office 2024, Office 2021, and Office 2019 do not include a product key. Activation normally uses the Microsoft account already linked to the license. Some new Windows PCs include a digital Office license transmitted directly to the device; signing in with a Microsoft account activates it, and no printed key is supplied.

Office 2016 for Mac continues to run, but support ended on October 13, 2020. Microsoft no longer provides software updates, security updates, or technical support for that release. Office 2010 and Office 2011 for Mac are also unsupported and are not available for download from the consumer setup page when installation media is no longer available.
Change the product key on an installed Office copy
Use this procedure when Office is installed and you need to switch its license. It is different from redeeming a new consumer key for the first time.
- Open an Office app.
- Select File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Switch License.
- If you are signed in, select Use a different account, then select Enter product key instead. If you are not signed in, select Enter product key instead.
- Enter the new key and select Install this product instead.
- Close all Office apps when prompted so the license update can finish.
If Switch License is missing, Microsoft says Office may need to be updated first.
Command-line method for Office 2019 and Office 2016
Microsoft’s documented command-line method applies to Office 2019 and Office 2016 installations using OSPP.VBS. It is not the normal Microsoft 365 redemption process. Open Command Prompt as administrator and use the command path matching the installed Office and Windows architectures.

If Command Prompt returns Input Error: Can not find script file, the Office version or 32/64-bit path is probably wrong. Select the command matching the installed Office and Windows architectures. Microsoft says using the wrong command does not damage the installation.

Do I need the product key to reinstall Microsoft 365?
Usually, no. Once redeemed, the license is associated with your Microsoft account. Sign in at account.microsoft.com, open Services & subscriptions, and install the product from there.
What does “This product key has already been used” mean?
It means the key was successfully redeemed previously. Do not enter it again. Sign in with the Microsoft account used during redemption and check Services & subscriptions.
Why does Microsoft 365 not show a product-key box?
Microsoft says the key may have been entered automatically. Continue with the setup prompts rather than attempting to redeem the code repeatedly.
Can I use a Microsoft 365 Business Standard key at Office.com/setup?
No. Use signup.microsoft.com/get-started/setupkey, enter the key without hyphens, select Next, and complete the business setup.
Can I activate Office with a Windows product key?
Normally, no. A product key on a Windows PC sticker is generally a Windows key, not an Office key.
What should I do if the retailer did not activate my key?
A KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED error indicates that the retailer did not activate it at checkout. Contact the retailer and request activation.
Why is my subscription extension rejected because of the region?
Microsoft 365 subscription keys generally must be redeemed in the country or region where they were purchased. A key and existing subscription created in different regions can trigger NoMatchingOrEligibleProductsFound.
