You can run experiments on a real quantum computer without buying or owning one: sign in to a managed cloud platform, build a small circuit, test it on a simulator, then submit it to a quantum processing unit (QPU). IBM Quantum Platform, Amazon Braket and Microsoft Azure Quantum each provide a route from a browser or programming environment to remote hardware. The right choice depends on the interface and programming tools you want, which hardware targets your account can access, and the platform’s current billing and queue conditions.

What does it mean to access a quantum computer in the cloud?

A cloud quantum service lets you submit a quantum circuit to hardware operated remotely by a provider. You build the circuit using a browser tool or a software development kit, choose an available hardware target, and send it as a job or task. The platform returns results for you to inspect and compare with a simulator.

This is different from buying quantum hardware: the service manages the connection to the QPU, while you provide the experiment and select how to run it. Access is not automatically free, instantaneous or available for every device. Account requirements, prices, target availability and queue conditions depend on the platform and can change.

A useful first experiment is deliberately small. A Bell-state circuit, for example, gives you a compact way to check circuit construction, simulator output, submission, measurement counts and the difference between an ideal calculation and a noisy hardware result. The point of the first run is usually to validate the workflow, not to demonstrate a large algorithm.

Which cloud quantum service should you choose?

Choose based on how you want to work and what comparison you want to make. IBM offers a visual circuit editor and direct access to IBM hardware; Braket brings multiple hardware technologies into one service; Azure Quantum organizes access through a workspace that can include multiple providers.

Service Useful when you want Ways to work Access and workload notes
IBM Quantum Platform A browser-first circuit editor or a Qiskit-based workflow on IBM hardware IBM Quantum Composer; Qiskit SDK with qiskit-ibm-runtime Hardware runs require sign-in. The documented IBM Quantum Open plan allows up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month. Premium and IBM Cloud Standard are paid routes.
Amazon Braket Access to multiple hardware technologies through one service Braket Python SDK locally, a local notebook or IDE, or a managed notebook in the AWS console AWS account and Braket permissions are required. The service supports simulators, hybrid jobs and Braket Direct reservations; device availability, prices and queues can change.
Microsoft Azure Quantum A workspace-based route, particularly if you already use Azure or want several providers in one workspace Azure portal, QDK Python package, VS Code extension or Azure CLI An Azure account with an active subscription and an Azure Quantum workspace are required. Providers, plans and regional availability vary.

Framework compatibility is another useful distinction. Azure Quantum’s QDK supports Q#, Qiskit, Cirq, OpenQASM and PennyLane workflows. Braket offers plugins for PennyLane, Qiskit and CUDA-Q. IBM’s documented code route uses Qiskit and qiskit-ibm-runtime.

Consider the hardware model as well as the software interface. Braket is explicitly designed to expose several technologies and vendors, while IBM focuses on IBM QPUs and Runtime execution modes. Azure provides a workspace and target list through which multiple providers can be enabled. A circuit that is easy to express in one framework may still need adaptation for a particular provider format or target.

Do not choose on an assumed speed or queue advantage. There is no stable cross-provider queue-time or performance figure to rely on; inspect the live target information and conditions for the particular device and account you plan to use.

How do I run my first experiment on IBM Quantum?

For a first circuit, IBM Quantum Composer is the simplest browser-first option. It lets you assemble a circuit visually; use the code route when you want to script, repeat or integrate the experiment.

Build a circuit in Composer

  1. Open IBM Quantum Composer. Without signing in, you can view simulated visualizations for circuits of up to four qubits.
  2. Drag operations into the circuit to create a small test, such as a Bell-state circuit, and inspect the visual representation.
  3. Run a simulation to check that the circuit is set up as intended. Save the circuit or export generated OpenQASM or Python if you want a reusable record.
  4. Sign in to run on hardware or work with visualizations larger than four qubits. Select an available IBM hardware target and submit the circuit.
  5. Keep the returned job information and results with your saved circuit so that you can identify exactly what you ran.

Composer is useful when you want to see gates and wires directly, but a saved circuit is more valuable than a one-time screenshot. Preserve the Composer file or an exported OpenQASM or Python representation, then record the selected backend and shot count with the result.

For programmatic execution, install the Qiskit SDK and qiskit-ibm-runtime, authenticate using an IBM Quantum account/API key or an IBM Cloud channel, select a backend, and submit a Job, Session or Batch workload. Qiskit Runtime is IBM’s cloud service for executing quantum computations on IBM hardware. The IBM Quantum Open plan’s documented allowance is up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month; Premium and IBM Cloud Standard are paid options. Check the current IBM access and plan terms before running hardware, since platform terms can change.

The code route is preferable when the experiment needs repeatable submission or parameter changes. Keep the exact SDK versions and authentication channel in your notes, because the backend and workload mode are part of the execution record, not merely implementation details.

How do I submit an experiment with Amazon Braket?

Braket is designed for experiments where you want to use a common cloud service to explore different quantum hardware technologies. You can develop locally or use a managed notebook in the AWS console.

  1. Sign in to AWS and enable the permissions needed for Braket.
  2. Choose an entry point: install the Amazon Braket Python SDK on your computer, work in a local Jupyter notebook or IDE, or open a managed notebook in the AWS console.
  3. Build a small circuit and run it on a simulator first. This lets you check the circuit and your submission workflow before using a QPU.
  4. Choose a supported hardware target and submit a task using the SDK or console. AWS documents on-demand access to AQT, IonQ, IQM and Rigetti gate-based devices, as well as QuEra’s Analog Hamiltonian Simulator.
  5. Retrieve the task results and retain the task identifier alongside the circuit and target details.

Braket also includes simulators, hybrid jobs and Braket Direct reservations. These options serve different workload and access needs, so check current device listings, prices and queue conditions rather than assuming a particular target or reservation is available to every account.

The multi-provider design makes the comparison question especially important. If you move the same circuit between an ion-trap, superconducting or analog target, identify what you are comparing: the provider, the hardware technology, the software translation or the observed output. Keep the circuit description, simulator check and shot count as consistent as the chosen targets allow.

Braket plugins for PennyLane, Qiskit and CUDA-Q can help you keep a familiar programming environment while changing the execution target. Plugin support does not remove target-specific requirements, so validate the workflow on a simulator and consult the current device documentation before submitting.

How do I use Microsoft Azure Quantum?

Azure Quantum requires an Azure account with an active subscription and an Azure Quantum workspace. Within the portal, you can create a workspace, view targets, submit jobs and inspect results; code-based options are available through the QDK Python package, VS Code extension and Azure CLI.

  1. Create an Azure Quantum workspace in the Azure portal.
  2. Add the providers and plans that are supported for your account and region.
  3. Run a simulator test before selecting hardware. The QDK supports Q#, Qiskit, Cirq, OpenQASM and PennyLane workflows.
  4. Choose a provider target and submit your circuit using the portal or a supported programming tool.
  5. Monitor the job and retrieve the output when it is ready. Azure jobs are associated with a provider and target and can move through states such as waiting and executing.

Confirm the target’s availability and billing information before submitting a hardware job. Provider formats, prices and regional availability differ, so a workflow that works for one target may not transfer unchanged to another.

The workspace is the organizing layer: it holds the provider connections and exposes the targets available to your account. If a provider is missing from the target list, check the workspace’s plans and region before rewriting your circuit. The same QDK installation can support interactive portal work and programmable submission, but each target still determines the accepted format and execution conditions.

What is a reliable workflow for a cloud quantum experiment?

A small, documented experiment is easier to debug and compare than a large circuit sent straight to hardware. Use the same basic sequence whether you work in a browser, notebook or SDK.

  1. Choose a platform for a reason. Decide whether the priority is a visual editor, a particular hardware technology, language support, simulator options, reservation model or workspace setup.
  2. Set up access. Create the required account or workspace, configure permissions or authentication, and open the browser tool or install the relevant SDK.
  3. Start with a tiny circuit. A Bell-state circuit is a useful example for testing that a circuit can be built and submitted. First run it on a local or managed simulator.
  4. Record the experiment configuration. Save the circuit source, SDK version, backend or target, shot count and date. These details help distinguish changes in your circuit from changes in the execution environment.
  5. Submit to a real QPU conservatively. Begin with a modest shot count and expect both noise and a possible queue.
  6. Save and interpret the output. Retrieve counts or observables, compare them with the simulator, and save the raw result and job identifier.
  7. Repeat only to answer a defined question. If you submit to another backend, decide what the comparison is intended to test and keep the other experiment details consistent where possible.

Run the simulator before every meaningful hardware change, not only before the first attempt. That check separates a circuit or syntax error from behavior introduced by the QPU. When you change the backend, provider, framework or shot count, note the change explicitly instead of treating the resulting data as a direct replication.

How much does cloud quantum access cost?

Cost is platform- and target-specific. IBM’s documented Quantum Open plan allows up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month; Premium and IBM Cloud Standard are paid routes. Braket and Azure expose device, provider, plan and reservation conditions that can change, so use the current billing pages and target listings for the account and region you will use.

A simulator test can help avoid unnecessary hardware submissions, but it does not establish that a hardware run is free. Check whether your chosen target is on-demand, subject to a reservation, or governed by another provider plan. Do not transfer IBM’s 10-minute allowance to AWS or Azure, and do not assume that a target listed in a general service description is available under every account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before submitting a hardware job?

Hardware access is only one part of a useful experiment. Check the target, account and experiment records before submission so you can understand what the returned result represents.

  • Target: Confirm the selected device is available to your account and supports the experiment you intend to run.
  • Billing: Review the current plan, provider terms and billing information. The documented IBM Open allowance is specific to that plan; do not assume another provider or target uses the same model.
  • Queue or reservation: Check the live conditions for the chosen target. Queue times are not stable across providers, devices or moments.
  • Software and format: Verify that your circuit framework and output format are supported by the target or provider. Platform-level support for a framework does not mean every target accepts every workflow in the same way.
  • Permissions: Confirm that the account, workspace, provider plan or AWS permissions needed for submission are active before debugging the circuit itself.
  • Result format: Know whether you expect measurement counts, observables or another provider-defined result, and preserve the raw response.
  • Reproducibility: Keep the circuit, SDK version, target, shot count, date, raw output and job or task identifier together.
  • Experiment scope: Decide whether you are testing circuit construction, comparing simulator and hardware behavior, or comparing targets. A specific question makes results easier to interpret.

Why did my experiment not run as expected?

A failed or delayed run does not necessarily mean the circuit is invalid. Check the failure point before changing the circuit or switching services.

The platform will not let me submit to hardware

Check whether you are signed in and whether the account has the required plan, permissions, workspace or provider setup. On IBM, hardware runs require sign-in; on Braket, AWS access and Braket permissions are needed; on Azure Quantum, an active Azure subscription and workspace are prerequisites.

The job is waiting

A waiting state can be part of the normal job lifecycle. Azure jobs can move through waiting and executing states, and queue conditions vary. Check the job status and the live target conditions rather than assuming a universal wait time.

The target or provider is unavailable

Provider, device and regional availability can change. Recheck the current target listing and account or region support; on Azure, confirm that the provider and plan are supported for the workspace. On Braket, the presence of a vendor in the service documentation does not guarantee that every device is accepting tasks at the moment you submit.

The hardware result differs from the simulator

Real hardware can produce noisy results, so a difference from simulation is not by itself proof that the circuit was submitted incorrectly. Confirm the circuit source, target, shot count and job identifier, then compare the raw result against the simulator output for the same circuit.

The same code does not work on another provider

Portability exists at the framework level more often than at the exact-target level. Check the provider’s circuit format, supported operations, target capabilities and result schema. Re-run the circuit on that provider’s simulator before sending it to hardware.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How can I make results easier to reproduce?

Cloud quantum experiments depend on more than the circuit text. Preserve the execution details with each result, especially if you plan to repeat the work later or compare providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Save the circuit source in its original form, including an OpenQASM or Python export when available.
  • Record the SDK version, backend or target, shot count and submission date.
  • Keep the raw counts or observables rather than saving only a chart or summary.
  • Retain the job or task identifier so you can associate the output with the execution.
  • For a cross-target comparison, write down the comparison question and note any differences in target, provider, execution format or availability.
  • Store the simulator output beside the hardware output for the same circuit and shot settings.

These records do not make separate hardware runs identical, but they make it possible to tell what was configured and which output came from which run. They also give you a precise starting point when a provider changes a target, queue condition or software interface.

Can beginners use a cloud quantum computer?

Yes. Composer provides a graphical entry point, and all three services document simulator-first workflows. Start with a few qubits, verify the circuit visually or in a notebook, and submit only after the account and target prerequisites are satisfied. The first useful result is a complete, documented round trip from circuit to returned data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Python to submit a quantum circuit from my own computer?

Yes. The documented code paths include Qiskit with qiskit-ibm-runtime for IBM Quantum and the Amazon Braket Python SDK for Braket. Azure Quantum also provides a QDK Python package; the account, workspace and target requirements still apply.

Do I need to keep my computer running while a cloud quantum job executes?

The circuit is submitted to the cloud service and associated with a job or task, which you can monitor and retrieve results for later. Keep the job identifier and experiment details so you can match the returned output to the submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same circuit on different cloud quantum providers?

Often you can reuse the circuit idea, but portability is not guaranteed at the target level. Framework support, provider formats and target capabilities differ, so check the chosen target’s requirements and validate the circuit with its simulator or workflow.

Do I need to buy a quantum computer to run a real experiment?

No. IBM Quantum Platform, Amazon Braket and Microsoft Azure Quantum provide managed routes to remote QPUs. You create the circuit, authenticate to the service, select an available target and retrieve the result from the cloud.

Is cloud quantum hardware access always free?

No. Access terms vary. IBM documents up to 10 minutes of quantum time per month on its Open plan, while Premium and IBM Cloud Standard are paid routes. Braket and Azure costs depend on the current device, provider, plan or reservation conditions.

Which service is easiest for a first circuit?

IBM Quantum Composer is the most browser-first option because it lets you drag and drop operations and simulate small circuits before signing in for hardware. Braket managed notebooks and the Azure portal are alternatives if you already use AWS or Azure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I save after a cloud quantum run?

Save the circuit source, SDK version, backend or target, shot count, date, raw counts or observables, and the returned job or task identifier. Keep the simulator result beside the hardware result for comparison.

The Bottom Line

You can access real quantum hardware online without owning a QPU. Start with a small circuit and simulator, then use IBM Quantum Composer and Qiskit, Amazon Braket, or an Azure Quantum workspace according to your preferred framework, hardware choice and account setup. Verify current plans, target availability, billing and queue conditions before submission, and preserve the complete job record with your results.
