To accept an AI-agent purchase with Stripe Link, provide an agent-ready checkout or payment endpoint, let the agent submit a clearly scoped spending request, and require the customer to approve that request in the Link wallet. Stripe then supplies a one-time-use card or Shared Payment Token (SPT) that the agent can use for the approved transaction without receiving the customer’s underlying payment credentials.
The merchant still controls the catalog, price, inventory, tax, fulfillment, refunds, fraud rules, and customer relationship. A conventional Payment Link can host a normal customer checkout, but the agent authorization and credential-scoping behavior comes from Link’s wallet flow, not from the URL by itself.
What an AI-agent purchase with Link actually involves
An AI agent should not be given a customer’s reusable card number. Instead, your system exposes products and checkout actions in a form an agent can understand. The agent asks to buy a specific item or service, including quantity, price, seller, and delivery details. The customer reviews that request in Link and approves it with a preferred payment method.

This model has four separate pieces that must work together:
- Discovery: the agent must be able to find your products, prices, availability, and policies.
- Fraud protection: automated traffic needs authentication, rate limits, replay protection, and transaction monitoring.
- Checkout: the agent needs a dependable machine-facing way to create or continue a purchase.
- Payments: Link supplies the customer approval step and a scoped credential for the approved transaction.
Stripe describes Link’s agent wallet as “a machine-native way to let agents make purchases on behalf of a human without sharing the underlying payment credentials.” The exact API names, eligibility rules, regional availability, and rollout status can change, so verify the currently documented agentic-commerce interfaces before writing production code.
Payment Links are not the agent wallet
A Stripe Payment Link is “a shareable URL that will take your customers to a hosted payment page.” You can distribute that URL in email, a website, or a chat. It can be reused, and each visit creates a checkout session. Payment Links support conventional one-time purchases and subscriptions through Stripe Checkout or Payment Links.

It does not, by itself, give an AI agent a customer-approved, transaction-scoped credential. The agent-specific authorization comes from the Link wallet flow and its spend request, not merely from sending a Payment Link URL to an agent.

You may use both patterns in one business. For example, a normal “buy now” button can continue to use a hosted checkout, while an agent-facing endpoint handles structured requests and Link approval. Keep the flows separate in your documentation and monitoring so a reusable URL is never mistaken for a user-approved agent authorization.
Build the merchant side before connecting Link
1. Define the transaction you are willing to authorize
Write down what an agent may buy and what must remain a human decision. Include the seller identity, product or service identifier, quantity limits, currency, shipping destination, tax treatment, delivery promise, cancellation rules, and refund policy. Decide whether an approved request may cover one item, a cart, or a subscription. The narrower the transaction definition, the easier it is for a customer to understand and for your fraud system to enforce.

Do not let a later catalog lookup silently change the approved amount or item. Create a stable internal order or quote record before requesting approval. Store the exact price, currency, tax, shipping charge, and expiry time that the customer will see.

2. Make discovery machine-readable
An agent needs more than a marketing page. Expose structured product data containing stable identifiers, titles, descriptions, current prices, currency, stock or service availability, options, shipping regions, estimated delivery, tax behavior, and refund terms. Return explicit errors when an item is unavailable rather than allowing an agent to infer availability from stale text.
Stripe frames agentic commerce as including discovery. Stripe Directory is described as a registry for businesses with agent-facing endpoints, while Stripe Projects helps software providers expose structured products and provision services programmatically. Whether your business is eligible for a particular Stripe surface depends on the current rollout, so treat those names as integration options to verify, not as a guarantee that every account has access.
3. Expose a dependable checkout endpoint
Your agent-facing checkout should accept a structured request and return a durable order or checkout reference. It should not require an agent to scrape buttons, parse changing page layouts, or guess which taxes and delivery charges apply. Authenticate the calling software, validate every product and quantity on the server, and calculate the final total from your own records.
A useful internal contract can contain fields such as these:

4. Create the spend request for Link approval
When the agent has a valid quote, send the customer a clear approval request through the Link wallet flow supported by your integration. Show the merchant, exact amount and currency, items, shipping or service terms, and when the authorization expires. The customer should be able to tell what the agent is buying before approving it.
Stripe’s October 7, 2025 announcement describes Link as “a wallet purpose-built for agentic commerce,” with controls such as spending limits or explicit permissions for agents. Use those controls where available, and also enforce your own order-level limits. A global permission such as “allow shopping” is weaker than a request tied to one seller, one amount, and one short-lived order.
5. Use the resulting credential only within its scope
After approval, Stripe provides the one-time-use card or SPT intended for the authorized purchase. Pass it only to the service that must complete that purchase, and keep it out of agent prompts, logs, analytics events, support tickets, and error messages. Do not design your system around storing a reusable card number; the value of this flow is that the agent can transact without seeing the underlying payment credentials.
Enforce the scope on your side as well as relying on the payment credential. Bind the approved token or card reference to your internal order, seller account, amount, currency, and expiration time. Reject attempts to reuse it for a second order, increase the quantity, switch the seller, change the currency, or continue after the approval window closes.
6. Reconcile payment and order state with events
Do not tell the agent that an order succeeded merely because a request was accepted. Use Stripe’s documented events and webhooks to reconcile payment status with your own order state. Verify webhook signatures, process events idempotently, and retain the event identifier so retries cannot create duplicate fulfillment.
A practical state model is:
- Quote created: your server calculated the item, price, tax, shipping, and expiry.
- Approval pending: the customer has not yet approved the Link spend request.
- Approved: Link returned the scoped payment instrument or token reference.
- Payment confirmed: the relevant Stripe event confirms the payment result required by your fulfillment policy.
- Fulfillment in progress: your warehouse or service accepted the order.
- Fulfilled, canceled, or refunded: the final business outcome is recorded and exposed to the agent.
Return a machine-readable status to the agent after each meaningful transition. Include a human-readable explanation for failures, but never include sensitive payment data. If a webhook arrives before your local order record, queue it safely and reconcile it after the record is created instead of discarding the event.

Design the permission boundary deliberately
The customer’s approval should answer five questions:
- Who is the seller? Bind the authorization to your merchant identity or the specific seller account involved.
- What amount is allowed? Include item total, shipping, tax, currency, and any permitted tolerance. Do not silently add charges after approval.
- When does it expire? Use a short approval window appropriate to inventory and price volatility.
- What action is allowed? Distinguish a purchase from a subscription, reservation, donation, or other recurring commitment.
- Which agent may use it? Associate the request with the authenticated agent, user session, and internal order.
Spending limits and explicit permissions are useful safeguards, but they do not replace server-side validation. A compromised agent can still submit a request that is technically inside a broad limit. Require fresh approval when the seller, amount, product category, delivery destination, or recurring nature of the purchase changes materially.

Authenticate every machine request
Give each approved integration a revocable credential and identify the user session and agent instance making the request. Apply least privilege: a catalog reader should not be able to create an order, and an order creator should not be able to alter refund rules. Rotate credentials and record which principal initiated every quote, approval, payment, and refund action.
Prevent replay and duplicate orders
Require an idempotency key for quote creation, approval handoff, and order submission. Store the key with the resulting order and return the original result when the same request is retried. Expire unused quotes and reject a scoped token after successful use. These controls matter because agents and webhook systems commonly retry after timeouts.
Rate-limit and monitor behavior
Rate-limit catalog searches, quote creation, approval requests, and payment attempts separately. Alert on rapid changes in shipping addresses, repeated declines, unusual basket sizes, many expired approvals, or one agent cycling through multiple customer accounts. Keep enough structured logs to investigate a dispute without logging card numbers or SPT contents.

Protect the customer relationship
Show a receipt and order status in a human-accessible channel as well as returning them to the agent. Make cancellation and refund instructions clear. Your business remains responsible for fulfillment, customer support, tax records, and dispute handling even when an agent initiated the transaction.

Refunds, cancellations, and post-purchase support
Define how the agent can request a cancellation or refund and which actions require renewed human approval. A refund should reference the merchant order and the original payment event, not a credential copied from an agent conversation. Return the refund state—requested, accepted, rejected, or completed—to the agent and notify the customer through your normal support channel.
Keep your policy consistent across human and agent orders unless there is a documented reason to differ. If inventory changes after approval, do not substitute a product without an approval rule that explicitly allows substitution. If the payment succeeds but fulfillment fails, mark the order for compensation or refund according to your published policy and reconcile that outcome through events.
Common implementation mistakes
Treating a Payment Link as an authorization token
A reusable hosted URL starts checkout sessions; it does not prove that a customer approved a particular agent request. Use the Link wallet approval flow for agent-specific authorization and keep URL-based checkout for the conventional experience it was designed to provide.

That defeats the credential boundary. Pass only the one-time-use card or SPT made available for the approved transaction, restrict its use to the internal order, and redact it from all logs and prompts.
Approving a total that can change later
If tax, shipping, quantity, or exchange-rate changes can alter the final amount, recalculate before approval and show the final amount. Require another approval when the change exceeds the permission granted to the agent.
Trusting the browser or agent to enforce limits
Limits must be checked server-side at quote creation, payment handoff, and fulfillment. A client-side display is not a security control.
Fulfilling before payment confirmation
Wait for the Stripe event that satisfies your payment policy, verify it, and make processing idempotent. A successful HTTP response from an intermediate request is not the same as a reconciled order.
Assuming every account has the same availability
Stripe’s agentic-commerce capabilities are evolving. Confirm account eligibility, supported regions, current documentation, and production readiness before promising customers that every agent can use the flow.
Launch checklist
- Catalog data includes stable IDs, current prices, currency, availability, delivery, tax, and refund terms.
- The checkout endpoint validates products and totals on the server.
- Each order has an expiry time and an idempotency key.
- The customer sees the seller, items, amount, currency, and expiration before approving in Link.
- Approval is bound to the seller, order, amount, currency, agent, and time window.
- The one-time card or SPT is never exposed in prompts, logs, analytics, or support tools.
- Payment and fulfillment states are reconciled from verified, idempotent webhooks.
- Duplicate, replayed, expired, over-limit, and changed-order attempts are rejected.
- Refund, cancellation, dispute, and support paths return status to both the agent and customer.
- Current Stripe documentation has been checked for API names, eligibility, regional support, and rollout status.
Choosing the right approach
Use a hosted Payment Link when the expected journey is a person opening a URL and completing checkout. Build the agentic-commerce path when an AI system must discover structured offerings, ask a person for permission, and complete a narrowly scoped purchase programmatically. In the latter case, Link is the approval and credential-protection layer; your merchant systems remain responsible for trustworthy product data, checkout rules, fraud controls, order reconciliation, fulfillment, and after-sales service.
