The Shining influenced modern horror games less by inventing a specific game mechanic than by offering creators a way to make fear part of a place, a character’s troubled history, and the player’s uncertainty. The clearest examples are The Medium, whose lead designer explicitly cited the film’s hotel and psychological approach, and The Suffering, whose lead designer credited Kubrick’s imagery for a visual technique that reveals fragments of the past. Other similarities, including those critics have drawn with Layers of Fear, should be described as comparisons rather than proof of direct influence.

What did The Shining contribute to horror-game design?

Its most defensible contribution is a set of adaptable design ideas: an isolated building that feels threatening, a protagonist whose psychology matters, unsettling images that do not immediately explain themselves, and a story disclosed in fragments. Games can turn these ideas into things a player navigates and investigates. That is different from saying one film created modern horror games, or that it originated familiar conventions such as first-person views, limited inventory, fixed cameras, or jump scares.

The distinction matters because a resemblance is not the same as an attribution. A hotel, a troubled character, or a strange vision may remind someone of The Shining, but it cannot establish that a developer borrowed from it. The strongest evidence comes when a creator names the film and specifies what they took from it. By that standard, the documented examples are focused: The Medium draws on the hotel and psychological approach; The Suffering draws on Kubrick’s imagery for a particular storytelling effect.

Those examples also point to why the film can be useful to game designers. Cinema can make viewers watch a character and place become frightening; a game can ask players to cross that place, look for clues, and decide how much to trust what they perceive. The connection is not that every game reproduces the film’s plot. It is that some of its methods of creating unease can be translated into interactive spaces and discoveries.

Was the influence from Stephen King’s book or Kubrick’s film?

They are separate works, and claims about influence should preserve that distinction. Stephen King’s novel was released in January 1977; Stanley Kubrick’s film was released on May 23, 1980. The direct game-design attributions discussed here name Kubrick’s film or its imagery, not King’s novel.

King’s official synopsis establishes the novel’s Overlook Hotel, winter isolation, Jack’s alcoholism and anger, and Danny’s precognitive ability. Those elements are part of the book’s premise, but they do not by themselves show that a particular game developer drew on the novel. Criterion’s description of Kubrick’s film emphasizes its snowbound, labyrinthine hotel and ambiguous psychological terror. That is a useful description of the cinematic material that developers and critics have compared with games.

When discussing a specific influence, use the source the creator identified. If a designer says “Kubrick” or names the film, do not silently convert that into a claim about King’s book. Conversely, a critic’s comparison between a game and The Shining does not tell us whether the relevant resemblance comes from the novel, the film, or a broader tradition of psychological horror.

Which games have the clearest documented connection?

The Medium and The Suffering provide the clearest creator-attributed examples, but the kinds of influence are different. Layers of Fear belongs in the discussion as a published critical comparison, not as a verified developer admission.

Game What the source supports How to describe the connection
The Medium Lead game designer Wojciech Piejko named the hotel and psychological approach as inspirations in a September 3, 2020 Unreal Engine interview. Explicit creator attribution to aspects of the film.
The Suffering Lead designer Richard Rouse III said Kubrick’s imagery inspired a slow-motion blur that reveals fragments of the protagonist’s and location’s past. Explicit attribution to a visual storytelling technique.
Layers of Fear Clara A. Pimentel and Philipe de Freitas Melo compared its changing house, distressed artist, and family story with The Shining in a 2018 review. A critic’s thematic reading, not documented developer testimony.

How does The Medium use the hotel idea?

In the Unreal Engine interview, Piejko named The Shining among the moving-picture inspirations for The Medium, specifying “the hotel and psychological approach.” The game takes place in an abandoned vacation resort and presents material and spirit realities at the same time. Its puzzles can span those realities, so the player has to investigate how the spaces relate rather than treat the setting as a neutral backdrop.

The useful connection is the role of the building. An isolated resort can give a story boundaries, recurring routes, and rooms whose history or condition invites attention. A space becomes a source of pressure because the player must enter and interpret it. The designer’s statement supports a connection to the film’s hotel and psychological method; it does not establish that every dual-reality feature or puzzle in The Medium came from The Shining. Piejko named other inspirations as well.

What did The Suffering borrow from Kubrick?

In a development postmortem, The Suffering lead designer Richard Rouse III linked Kubrick’s imagery to a slow-motion blur that discloses fragments of Torque’s past and Carnate Island’s history. The account does not provide a complete explanation all at once: it deliberately leaves gaps for the player’s imagination.

That is a more specific claim than saying the game “feels like” the film. The technique makes an image do two jobs: it unsettles the player and offers partial information about what happened. The player receives a clue, not a neatly closed account, and must make sense of the gap. Rouse expressed the design philosophy in his postmortem: “In horror, the player’s imagination is far more disturbing than anything a writer could possibly come up with.” That is his view of horror design, not a statement by King or Kubrick.

The example also cautions against equating atmosphere with a particular combat style. Rouse described The Suffering as action horror, not conventional survival horror. The Kubrick-inspired visual device could therefore operate alongside action-oriented play; its presence does not establish that the game adopted the film’s pace or gameplay structure.

What is the Layers of Fear comparison based on?

In their review in issue 17 of The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies (2018), Clara A. Pimentel and Philipe de Freitas Melo compared Layers of Fear with The Shining through its changing house, distressed artist, and family story. Those are meaningful interpretive parallels: each can direct attention to a disturbed person and a domestic or enclosed space that changes how the story is understood.

But the source is a review, not a developer’s statement of influence. The careful formulation is that the reviewers read the game alongside the film, not that the game’s makers confirmed the film as a source. That distinction keeps literary and critical interpretation valuable without presenting it as production history.

How do these ideas work when a player controls the story?

In a film, the viewer receives a sequence of images chosen by the director. In a game, the player may have to approach a door, retrace a route, inspect a room, or connect a vision to a place. The underlying horror idea can remain similar while its function changes: an image or corridor is no longer only something to watch; it can become something to cross, revisit, or interpret.

A building can act like an antagonist

An isolated setting naturally limits escape and concentrates attention. Repeated routes make it possible for a player to recognize a room or corridor and notice that something has changed. Rooms can also separate pieces of a story, making exploration part of how the player learns what a place means. The Overlook and The Medium’s resort make a grounded comparison on this point, with Piejko’s attribution supporting the connection for his game.

This does not mean that every enclosed game setting descends from The Shining. Architecture is a broad design resource, and the same device can arise independently. The useful question is whether a creator has identified a source, or whether a critic is offering a reading, rather than whether a building happens to look familiar.

Psychology can shape what a place means

A setting becomes psychological when what the player sees is tied to memory, fear, guilt, or uncertainty, rather than serving only as a location for the next encounter. The player may have to consider whether a scene is reliable, what a character knows, or why an image appears. Piejko’s description of The Medium supports a psychological connection to the film; the Layers of Fear comparison is a critic’s interpretation of related effects.

For the player, uncertainty can be productive when it gives exploration a purpose. A room may hold clues about a character or a past event, but the meaning may become clear only after further discoveries. The result is not simply “a scary place.” It is a place whose details affect how the player understands the story.

Fragments give the player interpretive work

Rouse’s account of the blur in The Suffering illustrates one way to make incomplete information interactive. A brief vision can expose part of a character’s or island’s past, while the deliberate gaps leave the player to assemble an account. The film influence described in the postmortem is attached to the visual technique; the player’s work of interpreting the fragments is how that technique functions in the game.

There is a trade-off. If every image is explained immediately, the player has little to infer; if the information is too opaque, a fragment may feel arbitrary rather than unsettling. Rouse’s stated intention to leave blanks explains the role of imagination in this example, but it should not be turned into a universal rule that all horror games must withhold answers.

Did The Shining create modern horror-game conventions?

The available examples do not support that broad claim. They establish particular inspirations and comparisons, not a quantified measure of influence across the genre or a direct causal path from the film to familiar mechanics such as camera perspective, inventory limits, or jump scares.

Other evidence helps show why the distinction matters. In an archived 1999 interview, Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama named Stephen King generally as an influence on modern-horror atmosphere, but did not single out The Shining. That supports a broad connection to King’s work, not a specific claim about the novel or Kubrick’s adaptation.

Remedy’s developers, in a March 5, 2024 Alan Wake 2 AMA, named Silent Hill and Resident Evil as influences and discussed a chase through hotel corridors. The corridor scenario may invite a viewer to think of Kubrick’s film, but the developers did not identify it as the direct source. A shared image or setting can be an interesting comparison without proving a line of influence.

A claimed connection between The Shining and a villain in Resident Evil 7 should likewise not be treated as established on the basis of a secondary account alone. Without an accessible firsthand passage confirming the attribution, it is better left out of the list of verified examples.

How can you judge a claimed influence for yourself?

When a game is described as “influenced by The Shining,” separate what a creator has said from what an observer recognizes. The following checks help preserve both the value of interpretation and the limits of the evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Find the kind of source. A developer interview or postmortem can document an intentional influence. A review can make a critical comparison. Both are useful, but they answer different questions.
  • Keep the borrowed element precise. “The hotel and psychological approach” is a stated influence for The Medium. A Kubrick-inspired blur is a stated technique for The Suffering. Neither statement proves that the entire game derives from the film.
  • Identify which work is named. King’s novel and Kubrick’s film are distinct. Attribute an influence to the book, film, or King’s writing generally only when the cited source does so.
  • Distinguish resemblance from attribution. A hotel, a troubled artist, a family story, or a corridor can support analysis, but none alone proves direct borrowing.
  • Ask what the element does in play. Does the place shape movement or investigation? Does an image disclose story information? Does uncertainty invite the player to infer meaning? These questions explain the design connection without overstating its origin.

Taken together, these checks give a more useful account than a list of games that merely share a mood or motif. They show how an acknowledged film influence can be narrow and concrete, while also leaving room for critics to identify broader thematic kinships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did The Shining have an official video-game adaptation?

The examples discussed here concern games borrowing or echoing design ideas, not a licensed adaptation of the film. The documented connections are to particular elements such as a hotel, psychological horror, or visual storytelling.

Why does a hotel setting work so well in horror games?

Hotels can combine private rooms with shared corridors, giving a story both spaces to investigate and routes a player may encounter again. The effect depends on how a particular game uses the building; a hotel setting alone does not establish an influence from Kubrick.

Can a critic’s comparison prove that a developer was influenced by a film?

No. A critic can make a persuasive reading of similarities in setting, character, or theme, but evidence of the developer’s intention requires creator testimony or comparable production documentation.
