Selectors weigh role coverage, performance, availability and the rules and conditions of a particular event. That is why an in-form player can miss out if the squad already covers his role but lacks another skill or batting option.
How are T20 cricket teams selected?
Selectors and team management first consider what the side needs to do across its innings and overs. They then compare available players for those roles and decide which combination offers the best coverage. A player’s value is therefore partly contextual: a strong candidate may be less useful if the squad already has several players doing a similar job.
There is no single selection formula established for all cricket boards, leagues, genders or age groups. The reasoning can vary by team and event, so an explanation of a particular selection should distinguish a stated reason from assumptions about selectors’ private thinking.
What roles does a T20 squad need to cover?
Typical jobs include opening the batting, keeping wicket, accelerating through the middle and at the end, and bowling in different phases. These are examples, not a mandatory template: the exact mix depends on the team’s plan and the event.
#1 Best Overall
When comparing candidates, selectors can ask whether a player fills a gap or duplicates a role already covered. A player who contributes with more than one skill may create room for another specialist, while a specialist may be valuable when the role is scarce. Flexibility matters when it helps cover a specific job or gives the team a useful alternative combination.
How do selectors balance form against team combination?
Recent runs or wickets can indicate readiness, but form is only one consideration. A short run of good performances does not by itself establish that a player suits the intended position, offers a needed secondary skill, or is available for selection. The relevant comparison is how the candidate’s performance and abilities fit the role the team needs to fill.
Rank #2
The ICC’s player rankings are a separate performance reference, not a selection algorithm. Its methodology describes player rankings as a moving-average points system on a 0-to-1000 scale that accounts for match circumstances. ICC team rankings are calculated by dividing points by the match or series total and rounding to the nearest whole number. Neither method is presented as a selector’s scoring rubric, and the ranking system does not establish a universal “form window” for selection. ICC rankings methodology.
Why might an in-form player be left out?
A squad has a limited number of places, so choosing one candidate can mean leaving out another—even when that player has a strong record. The decision may turn on whether the team needs another option in a particular position, more depth at a different stage of the innings, or a skill not otherwise covered.

In the ICC’s report of 20 December 2025, selection committee chair Ajit Agarkar said India wanted to try two wicketkeepers, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, at the top of the order. Explaining Shubman Gill’s omission, Agarkar said the team wanted more lower-middle-order depth through Rinku Singh and added: “It’s about combinations, so someone has to miss out, and unfortunately, it is Gill at this point.” This is an explanation of India’s choices for that event, not a rule that every team should use two top-order wicketkeepers or leave out a player with Gill’s profile. How are the squad and the match XI different?
A tournament squad is the group from which the team chooses players for each match. The playing XI is the side selected for a particular match, so the same squad can provide different combinations across fixtures. Eligibility and replacement rules depend on the competition and edition.

For the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, ICC playing conditions specify a side of eleven players and require nominated players, substitute fielders and concussion replacements to be official members of the squad. The ICC event guide for that edition reported final lists of 15 players and said alterations at that stage required approval from the event technical committee. These details apply to that tournament, not automatically to every T20 competition. ICC playing conditions for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup; ICC event guide for the 2026 tournament.
How do availability and event conditions affect selection?
Fitness and availability can change which combinations are possible. ICC coverage of the 2026 event reported injury setbacks affecting named players; that is a concrete example of availability affecting a squad, not evidence of a universal selection policy. ICC report on India’s 2026 squad.

The applicable tournament rules also matter, and format descriptions should be tied to the correct edition. In July 2026, the ICC reported a proposed group-format change for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup while maintaining a 20-team tournament. That proposal concerns a particular future edition; it should not be treated as a description of other tournaments or editions. ICC report on the proposed 2028 format.

When two candidates are competing for a role, these questions help make the trade-offs clear. They are comparison lenses, not an official checklist or points system.
Quick Recap
- Role coverage: Does the player fill a job the team needs, or overlap with a role already covered?
- Batting position and innings phase: Does the player fit the intended position and task, such as opening or adding lower-middle-order depth?
- Other contributions: What bowling or fielding options does the player provide alongside batting, if relevant to the team’s plan?
- Form in context: What do recent performances indicate, and how much evidence do they provide for the role in question?
- Availability and rules: Is the player available and eligible, and do the competition’s rules allow the proposed squad change or replacement?
- Combination effect: If this player is selected, which other roles become easier or harder to cover?
