SmritiPath turns a spoken or written memory of a place into an editable walking route and a screen-free Walk Pack. Its local workflow uses faster-whisper for speech-to-text and Gemma 3 4B through Ollama to identify places and pull transcript quotations, so recordings and transcripts remain on your computer. You still need an internet connection while preparing the walk for map tiles and place search. After you pin and reorder the stops, the generated pack provides a sketch map, descriptions of what each place was like, conversation prompts, and blank lines for recording what you see there now.
What is SmritiPath?
SmritiPath is an open-source project by Vaidehi Kakad for families, neighbors, and community groups who want to turn personal memories into a walk. Instead of treating an old story as a document that stays on a hard drive, it connects each remembered location to a route that people can visit together.
The result is deliberately more than a map pin. A Walk Pack combines a route sketch with a short account of each stop, questions to ask the person who remembers it, and blank “Now” lines for observations made during the walk. The physical or offline format encourages participants to look at the surroundings and talk rather than navigate continuously on a phone.

The project is best understood as a guided editing workflow, not an automatic historian. A small local model proposes places and quotations; a person confirms, corrects, reorders, or removes them before the pack is made.

How can I turn a family memory into a walking route?
Prepare the source story, let the local tools suggest candidate stops, verify the evidence, then place and order the stops yourself. The practical sequence is:
- Add the memory. Upload a recording or paste a transcript. The current speech-to-text testing reported by the author is in English.
- Transcribe locally. SmritiPath uses faster-whisper on the same computer to convert speech into text. The audio and transcript are git-ignored so they are not committed to the project repository.
- Extract places and quotations. Gemma 3 4B, run through Ollama, identifies likely stops and returns a quotation for each one. These are suggestions, not final facts.
- Check the evidence. A code check tests whether every proposed quotation appears in the transcript. Unverified material is flagged for review.
- Pin the stops. Use Leaflet with OpenStreetMap data to find locations and place pins. Map tiles and place search require internet during this preparation stage.
- Reorder the route. Arrange the stops into a practical walking sequence. You can edit names, text, and locations when a remembered landmark is ambiguous or has changed.
- Generate the Walk Pack. The system creates one offline pack containing the map sketch, then-and-now descriptions, questions for the walk, and blank spaces for present-day notes.
This division of labor matters: the model handles repetitive extraction, while the people who know the story decide what belongs in the route and what wording is fair to the speaker.
Does SmritiPath keep recordings private?
For the local workflow described by the author, speech recognition and place extraction run on the user’s machine. Audio and transcripts stay there rather than being uploaded to a hosted AI service. That arrangement is useful for family stories containing names, addresses, or sensitive memories.

During construction, the map interface still fetches OpenStreetMap tiles and uses online place search. If the computer is taken offline after the pack is generated, the walk itself can proceed without a network connection or a live map.
What a private setup does and does not protect
- Protected by the stated design: the recording and transcript used by faster-whisper and Gemma 3 4B are processed locally and are not sent to a cloud transcription endpoint.
- Still exposed during preparation: map requests and place searches can reveal the locations you look up to the mapping service. Avoid searching sensitive addresses if that matters to your project, or prepare only the minimum locations needed.
- Still your responsibility: backups, access permissions, and exported Walk Packs can disclose the story. Store them like any other private oral-history material.
How does SmritiPath check that an AI quotation is genuine?
After the model proposes a quotation, code checks that the exact text occurs in the transcript. If it cannot find a match, the item is marked unverified instead of being silently presented as something the speaker said. Every stop remains editable because a 4B-parameter model can still misunderstand speech or context.

This check catches fabricated wording, but it does not prove that the quotation is interpreted correctly. A transcript may contain a recognition error, a pronoun may be ambiguous, or the speaker may be describing a place by an old name. Read the transcript beside the original audio when a detail affects the route, and ask the speaker to confirm uncertain names.
Known extraction failures
The first version produced stop names such as “tree” and “cart,” inserted a stray “quote:” label, and sometimes merged two places that the speaker had kept separate. The author tightened the prompt, added a worked example, and introduced the transcript-match check in response. Those fixes reduce avoidable errors but do not remove the need for human review.
What is in an offline Walk Pack?
The pack is designed to be printed or carried as a single offline reference. It includes:
- a sketch map showing the selected route and stops;
- a description of what each stop was like in the remembered period;
- questions to ask the person who supplied the memory;
- blank “Now” lines for noting what has changed, what remains, and what participants notice together.
Because the content is assembled before the outing, the group does not need to keep a phone visible. Someone can carry the pages, pause at each stop, and write observations by hand. If you later digitize those notes, treat them as a new contribution rather than silently overwriting the original memory.
How does SmritiPath compare with other ways to map a memory?
The important differences are where processing happens, how much evidence can be checked, whether the finished experience needs connectivity, and what the activity is for. The following comparison uses broad categories rather than naming a particular commercial product.

| Approach | Where recordings and text are processed | Stop and quotation control | Connectivity during the experience | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SmritiPath | Locally with faster-whisper and Gemma 3 4B through Ollama | Transcript-match check; every stop remains editable | Not required after the Walk Pack is built | Private family or neighbor memory walks |
| Cloud transcription service | Usually a remote server; the provider’s policy determines retention and use | Verification and editing depend on the service; not established here | Usually needed to upload, process, or retrieve results | Convenient transcription at the cost of a different privacy model |
| Digital family-map service | Often hosted online; exact processing location varies by service | Map editing may be available, but quotation checking is not established here | Commonly needed for the interactive map | Sharing family locations digitally |
| GPS soundwalk | Depends on how recordings are hosted and delivered | Usually curator- or artist-edited rather than transcript-verified | App or browser access may be needed while listening | Public heritage interpretation or artistic performance |
SmritiPath’s distinctive combination is local extraction, explicit quotation checking, and an offline print-oriented endpoint. A hosted map or a GPS soundwalk may be a better fit when the goal is public access, continuous audio playback, or a large audience.

What evidence supports memory walks as a practice?
SmritiPath follows several established patterns in reminiscence and cultural mapping, while applying them to a private, editable family workflow.
Maps can prompt reminiscence
In a 2011 study, S. Tejaswi Peesapati, Victoria Schwanda, Johnathon Schultz, and Dan Cosley worked with 16 people using Google My Maps to write about their past. Participants chose remembered places in different ways, and on balance they liked maps as a reminiscing tool. The finding supports using a map as a conversation prompt, not as a claim that one “correct” set of places exists.
Community control matters
Benjamin Ridgeway and Olivia Guntarik described 2016 Melbourne workshops with First Nations participants in work published in 2017. Their cultural walking-trail app used a cocreative archival framework intended to put control of content back in participants’ hands. For a family project, that principle means the person whose memory is recorded should be able to correct names, remove sensitive stops, and decide what can be shared.
Location changes how a story is heard
George Tsz-Kwan Lam’s 2022 Family Association used recordings from five Chinese-American community members in a GPS-enabled Chinatown soundwalk. The project shows how moving through a place can change which stories and music participants notice; it was available through an iOS app and a browser simulation. SmritiPath takes a quieter approach by putting prompts and writing space on paper rather than requiring live audio.

Intergenerational mapping can become a public archive
Nordregio’s Mapping Memories connected interviews about significant places in Ilulissat to an interactive map and involved young people recording older residents. An exhibition launched at the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre on September 16, 2026, with more than 80 participants. That example shows how a small interview activity can grow into a community-controlled heritage project, provided participants retain a say over publication.
What are SmritiPath’s language and model limitations?
The author reports speech-to-text testing in English so far. Hindi and Marathi are planned next, so users should not assume equivalent accuracy for those languages or for code-switching conversations today. Even in English, accents, background noise, names, and local pronunciations can reduce transcription quality.
Gemma 3 4B is small enough for a local setup but is not infallible. Expect occasional wrong place categories, merged stops, missing context, or formatting artifacts. Keep the original recording, review the transcript, and use the editable stop list as a deliberate checkpoint rather than accepting the first generated route.
Stated future work includes comparing open models on messy spoken memories and adding an audio version of the Walk Pack. Until those features exist, the reliable output is the editable text-and-map pack described above.
How should a family prepare a reliable memory walk?
A little preparation improves both the model’s suggestions and the human conversation.

- Record in a quiet room and ask the speaker to pause between place names.
- Keep unusual names, former street names, and landmarks in the speaker’s own wording; do not normalize them before verification.
- Ask for approximate sequence (“first we went here, then there”) even if the final route will be reordered for safe walking.
- Mark uncertain locations for discussion instead of guessing a modern address.
- Decide in advance which memories are private and should not appear in a shared or public pack.
- Plan for mobility, shade, seating, crossings, and restroom access; the shortest route is not automatically the most usable one.
At each stop, invite the speaker to compare the remembered scene with what is visible now. The blank “Now” lines are useful for recording changes without rewriting the historical account.
Who is SmritiPath for, and when is another format better?
It fits a family or small group that values privacy, hands-on editing, and a walk that can continue without a signal. It is also a practical starting point for libraries, museums, and oral-history programs that want participants to review material before anything is published.
Choose a different format when you need a public-facing archive with search, automatic distribution to many visitors, continuous GPS-triggered audio, or professionally moderated access controls. SmritiPath can help draft and organize material for such a project, but the available data does not establish built-in public publishing, multilingual support beyond the planned languages, or automated accessibility features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I use SmritiPath with a handwritten letter instead of a recording?
Yes. The workflow accepts pasted text as well as an audio recording, so you can transcribe a letter or diary entry yourself and submit that text for place extraction. Preserve paragraph breaks and original spellings so unusual names remain visible during review.
What should I do if a remembered place no longer exists?
Keep the historical stop in the pack, label its present-day reference clearly, and use the “Now” lines to describe what occupies the site today. If there is no safe or meaningful access point, place the stop on the sketch map but provide an alternative viewing location.
Can a child help make the route?
A child can interview a relative, compare old and new landmarks, or illustrate the sketch map. Have an adult handle file storage and consent, especially when the recording includes other people’s names or private family information.
Is SmritiPath suitable for publishing a community history online?
It can organize source material, but publication requires a separate consent and editorial process. Confirm who owns recordings, which locations are sensitive, and whether people want their words quoted publicly before exporting or sharing anything beyond the walking group.
