Skilled trades are becoming one of AI’s most practical proving grounds—not because software is replacing electricians, HVAC technicians, mechanics, or builders, but because it removes the information and paperwork bottlenecks around physical work. A technician can search plans by voice, turn a photo into a task, identify a thermal anomaly, or receive a guided inspection prompt while keeping responsibility for diagnosis, installation, and safety. The evidence points to meaningful but uneven adoption: use is ahead of enterprise-wide deployment, especially in construction. AI is best understood here as an augmentation loop: capture evidence at the asset, interpret it with software, then let a qualified person decide and act.

Why are skilled trades becoming an important AI success area?

The strongest near-term value comes from putting AI next to a physical job rather than asking a general chatbot to produce an answer in isolation. Plans, photographs, forms, voice notes, thermal images, and sensor readings are tied to a specific building, machine, panel, or work order. Software can organize and interpret that evidence quickly; the trade professional still applies context, hands-on skill, codes, and safety judgment.

This is an emerging success area, not proof that every trade has adopted AI. The World Bank’s Digital Progress and Trends Report 2025 estimates that 22% of US workers in blue-collar groups—construction and extraction, installation and repair, skilled production, and transportation and moving—use generative AI at work. That is a cross-occupation estimate, not a claim that 22% of electricians or HVAC technicians use it.

The same World Bank material shows the share of craft and related trades workers using digital tools at 0.26 in 2015 and 0.29 in 2024. The gradual rise suggests a foundation for AI-assisted work, while also showing why adoption should not be described as universal.

How widely is AI actually used in construction and the trades?

Worker-level use is significantly more common than deeply integrated company-wide systems. Different surveys measure different populations, so the figures below should not be treated as interchangeable.

Measure Finding How to interpret it
US blue-collar workers using generative AI at work 22% World Bank, 2025; combines several blue-collar occupational groups.
Craft and related trades digital-tool-use ratio 0.26 in 2015; 0.29 in 2024 World Bank, 2025; a ratio tracking digital-tool use, not a generative-AI adoption rate.
Construction organizations with no AI implementation 45% RICS global survey, 2025.
Construction organizations in early pilots 34% RICS global survey, 2025.
Regular AI use in specific construction processes Just under 12% RICS global survey, 2025.
AI used across multiple construction processes 1.5% RICS global survey, 2025.
Fully embedded organization-wide construction use Less than 1% RICS global survey, 2025.
Canadian trades, transport, and equipment-operator workers using generative AI in the prior 12 months 14.7% Statistics Canada, March 2026.
Irish construction, real-estate, and computer-repair enterprises reporting AI use 7.5% in 2023; 7.9% in 2024; 10.8% in 2025 Central Statistics Office Ireland release covering 2023–2025.
OECD firms using AI in 2024 7.24% in construction; 12.38% in manufacturing ISED Canada/OECD 2025 blueprint.

Investment intent is stronger than current deployment. In the RICS survey, 56% of construction investors planned to invest more in AI than in the previous year. That combination—many pilots, low embedded use, and rising investment—describes a sector testing where AI fits before committing to broad rollouts.

Which trade tasks benefit from AI right now?

Useful deployments tend to shorten a specific workflow. They do not ask the system to take unrestricted control of a job.

Can AI make plans and field records easier to search?

Construction crews often lose time locating a detail in a drawing set, previous task, photo, or form. Fieldwire’s Field Intelligence features, described by the vendor, let users ask questions across plans, tasks, photos, and forms; create or update tasks by voice; edit requests for information; and convert an identified issue into a task. This is a practical example of reducing administrative friction while the crew decides whether the issue is real, urgent, or safe to act on.

Fieldwire calls this capability “Field Intelligence™” and says it streamlines access, recording, and reporting. That wording is a vendor description, not an independent productivity evaluation. Before deployment, confirm what file types are indexed, how permissions are inherited, whether voice notes are retained, and how records can be exported if the company changes systems.

How do AI planning and logistics tools help a site?

Skills England identifies AI-supported project planning and logistics, digital planning, real-time feedback, and automated hazard detection as emerging construction applications. The same government source points to drone-assisted surveying for land assessments, AI-aided retrofit modelling, and VR or AR safety simulations.

These uses move AI earlier in the project lifecycle. A drone survey can supply current site evidence; a planning model can expose sequencing or delivery conflicts; a retrofit model can test design options; and a simulated scenario can let workers rehearse hazards before entering a live area. Each output still needs a competent person to check assumptions, site conditions, and legal requirements.

Can AI help with condition-based maintenance?

Thermal imaging is a concrete bridge between field evidence and software analysis. A thermal camera reveals temperature differences that an ordinary photograph cannot show, allowing a technician to document an anomaly and decide what electrical, mechanical, piping, or HVAC checks should follow. The camera does not by itself establish the cause or authorize a repair.

Bosch’s GTC400C connected thermal camera provides 160×120 thermal resolution, more than 19,000 measurement points, storage for up to 500 images, temperature-anomaly detection, and transfer of thermal documentation to a phone or computer. Those are manufacturer specifications. The product is an inspection and documentation device, not evidence that the camera contains generative AI or can replace a qualified diagnostic process.

Hilti’s PT-C thermal camera is aimed at electrical, mechanical, piping, HVAC, and industrial-infrastructure inspections and supports documentation transfer over USB-C. Regional availability and sales arrangements vary, so verify them before specifying the device for a crew.

What does guided, hands-free inspection look like?

Atanzo AI describes smart-glass and phone workflows that provide step-by-step prompts, capture photos, assemble reports with AI, and use custom knowledge bases. These are vendor-described capabilities. A pilot should compare the generated report with an experienced inspector’s record, measure missed findings and false alarms, and establish who signs off on safety-critical conclusions before the system is used operationally.

Will AI replace electricians, HVAC technicians, and other skilled-trade jobs?

The available evidence supports augmentation, not a measured forecast of broad replacement. Documented systems assist with searching information, recording conditions, detecting anomalies, drafting reports, planning logistics, and training. They do not demonstrate that software can broadly perform physical installation, repair, diagnosis under changing site conditions, or accountability for code and safety decisions.

A realistic division of work is:

  • Software: retrieve the relevant plan detail, organize evidence, flag a possible anomaly, draft a task or report, and suggest the next checklist item.
  • Trade professional: validate the evidence, isolate equipment safely, interpret readings in context, choose the repair, perform the physical work, and document acceptance.
  • Supervisor or engineer: approve changes that affect design, compliance, commissioning, or public safety.

This arrangement can change jobs without eliminating the underlying craft. Workers may spend less time on manual transcription and searching, while more time is available for diagnosis, communication, quality control, and complex exceptions. No cited source provides a universal employment or productivity number, so claims that AI will either eliminate or guarantee trade jobs go beyond the evidence.

What is stopping construction companies from scaling AI?

RICS respondents identified three leading barriers: lack of skilled personnel (46%), system-integration challenges (37%), and poor data quality (30%). These obstacles explain why a compelling pilot may remain isolated.

Skills and interpretation

Skills England notes that many workers lack the foundational digital skills needed to interpret or act on AI insights. Training therefore has to cover more than button-clicking: workers need to recognize uncertain outputs, capture usable evidence, and escalate an unsafe or contradictory recommendation.

Integration and data quality

An AI search tool is only as useful as the plans, asset identifiers, photos, forms, and permissions it can access. Duplicate file names, outdated drawings, inconsistent abbreviations, and disconnected maintenance systems produce confusing results. Start with a defined document set and an owner responsible for version control.

Connectivity, governance, and accountability

Field conditions can include weak connectivity, shared devices, dirty lenses, dead batteries, and restricted jobsite access. Decide what must work offline, how data is synchronized later, where images are stored, and who can delete or export records. For safety-related outputs, write a rule that AI advice is advisory until a named qualified person verifies it.

How should a trade business choose an AI tool or inspection camera?

Compare the complete workflow rather than a feature list. The following questions expose whether a product solves a real bottleneck.

  1. Define the task: choose inspection and diagnosis, planning and logistics, reporting, training, or maintenance. A tool that excels at plan search may be irrelevant to thermal inspection.
  2. List the evidence: specify whether the workflow needs thermal images, ordinary photos, sensor readings, plans, forms, voice notes, or a combination.
  3. Set human control: identify whether the system only advises or can trigger an automated action, and name the person who verifies every safety-critical decision.
  4. Check integration: confirm mobile and desktop support, export formats, BIM or field-management connections, identity and permissions, and whether data can be moved to another system.
  5. Estimate deployment burden: budget time for data cleanup, connectivity, device management, training, and integration—not just the subscription or camera.
  6. Calculate total cost: include hardware, batteries and accessories, software fees, implementation, support, replacement cycles, and the cost of an incorrect or missed finding.
  7. Run a bounded pilot: choose one asset class or recurring inspection, compare AI-assisted records with an experienced worker’s records, and define success and stop conditions before rollout.

Are thermal cameras and smart glasses worth buying for inspections?

They can be worthwhile when a company already has a repeatable inspection process and a clear plan for storing and reviewing evidence. A thermal camera is a relatively direct way to capture a measurable signal and attach it to a report; smart glasses can reduce hands-off documentation effort when the environment and connectivity support them.

Approach Best fit Evidence produced Key checks before purchase
Connected thermal camera Electrical, HVAC, mechanical, piping, and infrastructure screening Thermal and visual images, temperature readings, anomaly markers Resolution, measurement range, image storage, transfer method, battery and environmental rating, and report workflow
Smart-glass or phone guidance Repeatable checklists and hands-free inspection documentation Prompt history, photos, notes, and an AI-assembled report Vendor performance claims, offline behavior, device compatibility, knowledge-base maintenance, and human sign-off
Field-management AI Plan questions, task updates, issue tracking, RFI and report drafting Search results, voice-created tasks, edited RFIs, and linked issue records Permissions, supported files, exportability, integration, and retention policy

Do not buy a device solely because it is marketed as “AI.” Confirm that its measured output enters a process someone already owns. A camera that creates files no one reviews, or a report generator fed by incomplete records, adds equipment and risk without solving the bottleneck.

What does a responsible first deployment look like?

A small, observable workflow is safer than an organization-wide launch.

  1. Select one recurring problem: for example, locating plan details, documenting HVAC checks, or triaging thermal anomalies.
  2. Define the baseline: record current time, rework, missing fields, and escalation steps without claiming a benefit in advance.
  3. Prepare the data: archive superseded drawings, standardize asset names, and restrict the pilot to records the team is allowed to process.
  4. Train the users: show how to capture clear photos or readings, question an uncertain result, and report a failure.
  5. Keep approval human: require a qualified worker to verify findings and sign the final task, report, or repair decision.
  6. Review exceptions: inspect false positives, missed issues, duplicate tasks, and synchronization failures—not just average completion time.
  7. Scale only after evidence: expand to another crew or asset type when data quality, integration, and accountability remain manageable.

This approach matches the current state of the market: construction has substantial experimentation but very little fully embedded use. It also makes the cost of a bad recommendation visible before the system touches safety-critical work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI system diagnose a fault from a thermal image alone?

No. A thermal image can document a temperature pattern and help prioritize follow-up, but the cause may depend on load, ambient conditions, wiring, airflow, mechanical state, or other measurements. Treat the image as evidence for a qualified diagnostic process, not as an automatic repair instruction.

What should a small contractor do if its records are mostly paper?

Start by digitizing one repeatable form or inspection, using consistent asset names and required photo fields. A narrow, clean record set is more useful for a pilot than attempting to convert every historical document at once.

How can a company test an AI vendor’s accuracy without risking a jobsite?

Use completed inspections with known outcomes or run the tool in parallel with an experienced worker. Blindly compare findings, missed issues, report corrections, and escalation decisions before permitting the software to influence live safety-critical work.

Does a thermal camera replace electrical test instruments?

No. Thermal imaging shows surface temperature patterns and can indicate where further investigation is warranted. It does not replace the measurements, isolation procedures, code checks, or professional judgment required for electrical work.
