Roku devices check for software automatically, usually install available updates without interrupting streaming, and restart when installation is ready. A check runs during initial setup, whenever the device turns on, and at random intervals every 24–36 hours. You can also start one from Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now.
An update may add or expand features, alter the interface, deliver app changes, or address security issues. What you actually receive depends on your Roku model, installed software version, country or region, and the rollout schedule. The version and build shown on your device—not a release-history entry alone—tell you what is installed.
What happens when a Roku device checks for updates?
Roku software checks are built into the device rather than requiring you to download a file manually. The device contacts Roku’s update service, looks for eligible software or app updates, and downloads and installs them when available.

| Whenever the device turns on | A startup check looks for available updates. |
| Randomly every 24–36 hours | The device performs another automatic check even if you have not restarted it. |
| Manual check | You can start a check from the System update screen. |
Roku describes automatic installation as normally occurring without interrupting use. That does not mean every part of the process is invisible: after the download and installation are ready, the device restarts to complete the update.

How do I check for a Roku update manually?
Use the built-in update command on the Roku player or Roku TV. The labels can vary slightly by device model or software version, so follow the equivalent wording shown on your screen if it differs.
- Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System update.
- Select Check now.
The update page displays the current software version and build, along with the date and time of the most recent update. If a newer eligible package is found, Roku downloads and installs it. If no package is available, the screen should leave the installed version unchanged.

Will a Roku update interrupt streaming or restart the device?
Most automatic downloads and installations are intended to happen without interrupting what you are doing. Once installation is ready, however, Roku says the device restarts. Plan for a short interruption at that point, especially if you manually begin an update immediately before watching something live.
The restart is normal update behavior, not by itself evidence of a failed installation. Wait for the home screen to return before judging the result. Then reopen Settings > System > System update to confirm the displayed version, build, and latest-update time.

What can a Roku software update change?
Roku updates are not limited to bug fixes. They can change the user interface, add features, expand an existing capability, update built-in apps, or include security and privacy fixes. Roku documents feature changes and security changes in separate histories, so a feature note should not be read as a complete security bulletin, and a security release entry does not promise a new visible feature.
New or expanded features
Roku’s feature notes dated October 2, 2026 describe Roku Labs, a Home Screen expansion to Brazil and Mexico planned for the coming months, subscription bundles in the United States and Mexico, and a more personalized search experience. Earlier notes describe a new Home Screen experience beginning its U.S. rollout on May 27, 2026.
Those dates describe published rollouts, not a guarantee that every device receives every change on the same day. A feature can be released gradually, limited to particular countries, or restricted to models that meet its technical requirements.
Security and privacy fixes
Roku maintains a separate security history. Its entry for Roku OS 15.3 — Roku, 2026 lists a release date of August 6, 2026 and associates that release with CVE-2013-1773, CVE-2023-0386, and CVE-2018-14617. The same history records Roku OS 15.2 as released on May 7, 2026 and lists the vulnerabilities Roku associates with that release.
These are release-history records published by Roku, not proof that version 15.3 is the newest version installed on your particular player or TV. Your device’s System update screen is the authority for its current version and build.

What do Roku OS 15.3 and 15.2 dates mean for my device?
A release date tells you when Roku published that version, not when every compatible device installed it. Automatic checks, staged rollouts, model eligibility, and regional availability can all affect timing. For example, an OS version can appear in Roku’s security history before it is offered to a specific model or country.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Roku OS 15.3 | Released August 6, 2026; associated CVEs include CVE-2013-1773, CVE-2023-0386, and CVE-2018-14617. | A Roku security-history entry, not a guarantee that every device currently runs 15.3. |
| Roku OS 15.2 | Released May 7, 2026; Roku records the CVEs associated with that release. | An earlier security-history entry whose availability still depends on device and rollout. |
Roku’s security page carries a last-updated stamp of August 10, 2026. Feature notes are current through the October 2, 2026 entry described above, so later changes or model-specific availability should be checked on the device and in current Roku support documentation.
Why is a feature missing after my Roku updates?
An absent feature does not automatically mean the update failed. Roku’s compatibility guidance shows that both the device model and minimum Roku OS version can determine eligibility; AirPlay and HomeKit, for example, have different requirements for different model groups.
- Identify the model: Use the device information available in Roku’s system menus or on the equipment label.
- Check the installed version and build: Find them on Settings > System > System update.
- Check the feature’s minimum version: A device can be fully updated yet still fall outside the supported model group.
- Consider geography and timing: A feature announced for one country or a future rollout may not be enabled in your region yet.
Compare the model, version, country, and rollout date before treating a missing feature as an installation problem. Updating cannot add a capability that the hardware or regional rollout does not support.
How do I fix a Roku update that fails?
Roku’s troubleshooting sequence starts with the network, then the device and router, and finally a manual update check. Follow the steps in order so you can distinguish a connection failure from a model or rollout limitation.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
- Confirm the selected network. Open the network settings and make sure the Roku is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network rather than an old or guest network.
- Test the internet connection. A device can appear connected to Wi-Fi while the internet path or Roku’s update service is unreachable.
- Restart the Roku and router. Restart both, wait for the network to come back, and allow the Roku to reconnect.
- Run the manual check. Return to Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- Read the error category. Roku’s error guidance distinguishes an unreachable update server, weak internet, a failed download, a failed installation, and a timeout. The category indicates whether to keep working on connectivity or retry the installation.
What should I do about weak Wi-Fi?
Move the Roku closer to the router, reduce obstacles between them, and avoid placing the player behind the television where the set can obstruct the signal. After changing placement, restart the Roku and router and repeat the manual check.
When is Ethernet useful?
Only some Roku devices have an Ethernet port. If yours does, a direct wired connection can be faster and more reliable than weak Wi-Fi and may resolve an update failure. An ordinary Ethernet cable is therefore a conditional troubleshooting option, not a requirement for routine automatic updates; check your model before buying or connecting one.
What if wireless speakers or a soundbar are involved?
Roku says paired wireless speakers, soundbars, and subwoofers update at the same time as the Roku device. Check that the accessories have power and show their normal status, keep them near the Roku while troubleshooting, and restart both the Roku and the affected accessory before trying again.

Four variables explain most differences between two Roku devices that appear to be updated at the same time:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Model: Hardware determines whether a feature is supported and whether an Ethernet port is present.
- Installed software version: Some capabilities require a stated minimum Roku OS version.
- Region: Feature rollouts can be country-specific, such as the announced expansion to Brazil and Mexico.
- Release timing: Roku can describe a rollout date or a future window while individual devices receive the change later.
When comparing two devices, compare all four variables rather than assuming that the newest release-history number produces identical screens everywhere.

How can I verify that an update succeeded?
After the device finishes installing and restarts, open Home > Settings > System > System update. Record the software version, build, and most recent-update date and time shown there. If the version did not change, check whether Roku reported that no update was available or whether an error interrupted the download or installation.
If a feature is still absent, use the model and version information to check compatibility and regional rollout status before repeating the update. This separates a successful update with limited eligibility from a genuinely failed installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Roku update erase my apps or settings?
The update guidance describes downloading, installing, and restarting, but it does not state that normal software updates erase apps or settings. If preserving a particular configuration is critical, note the model and current version and consult the current model-specific Roku support instructions before proceeding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does my device show an older version than a Roku release-history page?
A release-history page records when Roku published a version, while your device reflects its own model eligibility, region, and rollout timing. Use the version and build on the System update screen to determine what is actually installed.
Do Roku TVs and streaming players follow the same update schedule?
Roku’s support wording applies the automatic check behavior to both Roku TVs and streaming players: checks occur at startup and every 24–36 hours. The feature set and menu labels can still differ by model and software version.
What information should I note when an update keeps failing?
Write down the Roku model, software version, build, latest-update time, network being used, and any error category shown on screen. Those details distinguish a compatibility or rollout question from a weak connection, failed download, failed installation, or timeout.
