Robotaxis navigate by running a continuous sense–solve–go feedback loop. Cameras, lidar, radar and, on some vehicles, audio or infrared sensors observe lanes, signals, vehicles, pedestrians and hazards. AI fuses those observations with precise localization and high-definition map data, predicts what nearby road users may do, chooses a route and short-term trajectory, then commands steering, acceleration and braking. The cycle repeats many times per second as the scene changes.
The result is not simply a car following a map. It is a constrained automated-driving system that combines overlapping sensors, machine-learning models, conventional planning software and vehicle controls inside a defined geographic and regulatory operating domain.
How do robotaxis see the road?
They do not rely on one camera or one algorithm. A robotaxi builds a view of the road by combining complementary sensors, each measuring different properties of the environment.
Cameras read visual meaning
Exterior cameras provide detailed, panoramic imagery. Computer-vision models use that imagery to identify traffic-light colors, road signs, lane markings, construction zones, vehicle types, bicycles, pedestrians and other visual cues. Cameras are particularly good at semantic detail: they can distinguish a red signal from a green one and interpret the shape or lettering on a sign.

Camera performance can fall with glare, darkness, heavy rain, dirty lenses or an object blocking the view. A camera also estimates distance indirectly from images, so its depth estimate can be less direct than a laser or radar measurement.
Lidar measures three-dimensional geometry
Lidar sends laser pulses outward and measures their return time. The resulting point cloud describes the position, size and shape of objects in three dimensions. That geometry helps the vehicle determine how far away a curb, parked car, pedestrian or piece of debris is, even when the object has little distinctive color or texture.
Waymo describes lidar coverage of up to 300 meters on its public explainer. Its sixth-generation description says lidar can separate small objects near larger ones and deliver centimeter-scale range accuracy in urban situations. Those are manufacturer descriptions for particular systems, not an industry-wide performance guarantee.
Radar measures range and motion
Radar sends radio waves and measures returned signals to estimate an object’s distance and relative velocity. That direct motion measurement helps the system recognize that a vehicle is closing rapidly, even when the camera image is ambiguous. Radar can remain useful in rain, fog, snow and low light, conditions that can reduce camera or lidar quality.
Waymo’s description of imaging radar says it tracks distance, velocity and size across lighting and weather conditions. Radar generally provides less visual detail than a camera and less shape detail than lidar, so it is most useful as a complementary modality.
Additional sensors fill specialized gaps
Some designs add long-wave infrared cameras, microphones, external audio receivers and other sensors. A federal filing from Zoox describes infrared cameras, microphones and additional sensing hardware alongside lidar, radar and standard cameras. Audio could help detect an approaching siren or unusual sound, while infrared can provide useful contrast in darkness. The exact sensor count and placement vary by vehicle generation and operator.
| Sensor | Primary contribution | Typical weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | Color, text, signal state, lane markings and object appearance | Glare, darkness, rain, grime and occlusion can reduce visibility |
| Lidar | Precise three-dimensional distance, shape and position | More limited semantic detail; performance and coverage depend on hardware and weather |
| Radar | Direct range and relative speed, with resilience in poor visibility | Lower visual and shape detail than cameras or lidar |
| Infrared and audio | Specialized night or sound cues | Not a replacement for the main perception suite; availability differs by vehicle |
What happens after the sensors collect data?
The driving stack turns raw measurements into a continuously updated model of the world. A useful way to understand it is as four connected jobs.

They attach categories and attributes such as “pedestrian,” “cyclist,” “turning vehicle,” estimated size and confidence.
- Tracking and prediction: Software links observations from successive frames and sensor sweeps so the vehicle knows which points belong to the same car or person. It estimates speed, heading and likely future paths. A pedestrian looking toward a crosswalk, a car edging out of a driveway and a vehicle signaling for a lane change may all receive different predicted trajectories.
- Behavior and route planning: The system selects a legal route to the destination, then chooses a short-horizon path through the current scene. It weighs lane rules, right of way, obstacles, traffic, passenger instructions and a safety margin around other road users.
- Motion control: A lower-level controller converts the selected path into steering, throttle and braking commands. The controller adjusts continuously rather than waiting for a complete trip plan, producing gradual acceleration and braking when conditions allow.
Waymo describes this sequence as perception, prediction, planning and navigation. Its consumer explanation calls the overall process “Sense, Solve, Go”: sense the environment, solve what it means and what to do, then go by executing the selected maneuver.
Why do robotaxis combine cameras, lidar and radar?
Sensor fusion reduces dependence on any one failure-prone measurement. A camera may recognize a traffic light but struggle to estimate the distance to a dark object at night. Lidar can provide that geometry, while radar can supply a direct closing-speed estimate through spray or fog. If one sensor is temporarily degraded, another can provide a cross-check or preserve a key measurement.
Example: a pedestrian near a parked van
Camera imagery may show a person-shaped region emerging from behind the van. Lidar can reveal the person’s three-dimensional position relative to the curb and vehicle envelope. Radar can help determine whether the object is moving toward the lane. The fused model can then predict a crossing and slow before the person becomes fully visible.

Example: a signal in bright sun
Visual glare can make a signal classification uncertain. Map context, the signal’s position, repeated camera frames and the vehicle’s localization provide additional checks. If confidence remains low, a conservative planner can reduce speed or stop rather than assume the most favorable interpretation.
Redundancy does not make the system infallible. Sensors can share a failure cause, such as heavy snow covering multiple external surfaces, and software must decide how to behave when measurements disagree. A safe response may be a slower maneuver, a stop, a request for remote assistance or a trip termination, depending on the operator’s design and operating rules.
How do HD maps and localization help a robotaxi?
Maps provide prior knowledge that raw sensor frames cannot always establish immediately. UK government guidance on connected and automated vehicles distinguishes static map layers, which can encode road geometry, speed limits and street furniture, from dynamic layers that may include congestion, crashes, flooding and weather.
Localization estimates the vehicle’s position and orientation within that map using positioning, navigation and timing data plus sensor observations. The vehicle compares visible lane lines, curbs, signs and fixed objects with mapped features. This map matching helps it identify the correct lane before a junction, anticipate a turn hidden around a bend and recognize that a temporary object does not belong to the permanent road layout.
Maps are not an authority that overrides reality. Construction, newly changed signals, parked vehicles or an obstructed lane can make the live scene differ from the database. The perception system checks the map against current sensors and the planner must adapt when they conflict. Dynamic updates can improve foresight, but the vehicle still needs onboard sensing to handle conditions that were not mapped in time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow does AI know when to brake or turn?
It does not use a single “brake” decision. Prediction and planning generate possible future states, and the controller selects a trajectory that stays within vehicle limits while maintaining separation from predicted hazards.
Braking for a stopped or slowing vehicle
Tracking estimates the lead vehicle’s range and relative speed. The planner projects whether the current path would close the gap too quickly, considers adjacent lanes and road rules, then requests deceleration early enough for a smooth stop. If the lead vehicle accelerates, the predicted path can be updated and braking reduced.
Yielding to pedestrians and cyclists
The system combines position, velocity, body orientation, crosswalk geometry and traffic priority. It may yield even when a person has not yet entered the lane if the predicted crossing path creates a plausible conflict. Uncertainty generally leads to a larger safety buffer or lower speed.
Turning and lane changes
Route planning identifies the required turn or lane. A local planner checks signal state, right-of-way rules, oncoming traffic, cyclists and the space needed to complete the maneuver. The vehicle can delay a lane change, take a different lane or replan the route if the intended gap disappears.

Can cameras alone navigate a robotaxi?
A camera-centered system can extract substantial information, but cameras alone must infer depth and velocity from image sequences and other contextual clues. That can be technically viable in some operating designs, yet it removes independent range and speed measurements that lidar and radar provide.
Tesla’s Robotaxi Safety Report emphasizes neural-network processing of visual data, attributing more than one million pixels processed every millisecond to each vehicle’s network. The report describes anonymized visual data processing; the figure is a company-reported processing claim, not a measure of driving safety or a comparison with another fleet.
Waymo publicly documents a multimodal suite, and Zoox filings describe lidar, radar, cameras and additional sensors. Multimodal designs generally offer more opportunities to cross-check perception, while camera-centric designs may reduce hardware complexity. Neither architecture alone proves a particular safety level. Useful comparisons require the same geography, weather, automation conditions, incident definitions and independently reported exposure data.
What sensors are on a Waymo or Zoox car?
Public descriptions identify broad categories rather than a universal bill of materials for every vehicle.
| Operator | Publicly described sensing | What that combination supports |
|---|---|---|
| Waymo | Lidar, cameras, radar and external audio receivers; newer descriptions also discuss imaging radar | 360-degree perception, detailed visual classification, three-dimensional ranging and direct velocity measurements |
| Zoox | Lidar, radar, cameras, long-wave infrared cameras, microphones and other sensors described in a federal filing | Multimodal perception with additional night, sound and redundancy cues |
| Tesla Robotaxi materials | Camera-based neural-network processing is emphasized in the cited safety report | Visual interpretation through neural networks; the public figure does not establish equivalent lidar or radar hardware |
Hardware can change between generations, test vehicles and production fleets. A vehicle’s sensor list also does not reveal how well its software handles disagreement, sensor blockage, unusual road layouts or rare events.
How far can the sensors see?
Published ranges are specifications for particular systems and conditions, not guaranteed stopping distances. Waymo cites lidar coverage up to 300 meters and says selected camera details can be seen at greater than 500 meters. The page does not state a publication date, so these figures should be treated as the operator’s description available in 2026 rather than a timeless fleet-wide benchmark.
Detection range is only one part of a maneuver. The vehicle must classify the object, estimate uncertainty, confirm that the path is relevant and leave enough time for planning, control and braking. Rain, glare, occlusion, road curvature and the object’s reflectivity can reduce the useful range.

Where can robotaxis operate, and what are the legal limits?
Robotaxis operate within defined operational domains: particular cities or mapped roads, weather limits, speed ranges, vehicle configurations and regulatory permissions. A service may be highly automated inside that domain while unable to accept a trip outside it. Geofencing, map coverage and remote-assistance procedures are part of the system’s practical boundary.
The distinction between a commercial robotaxi service and a universally capable private car matters. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states: “There is no vehicle currently available for sale that is fully automated or ‘self-driving.’” That statement concerns vehicles available for sale to consumers in the United States; it does not mean no automated driving service exists under restricted conditions.
Permit status also varies by jurisdiction. A vehicle operating in one city or under one state approval should not be assumed to have authorization, the same sensor configuration or the same safety case elsewhere.
What privacy issues do robotaxi sensors create?
External cameras and lidar can observe license plates, faces, homes and bystanders even when those people are not passengers. Microphones or audio receivers add another category of potentially sensitive environmental data. Operators describe different retention, anonymization, access and deletion practices, so riders should read the applicable privacy notice rather than infer policy from the sensor hardware.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tesla’s cited report says its neural network uses anonymized visual data. That statement describes the data treatment claimed in that report; it does not answer every question about raw video retention, fleet telemetry or third-party access. Waymo’s public privacy material explains that exterior cameras provide a 360-degree view and can see traffic-light states, illustrating why environmental capture extends beyond the passenger cabin.
How should you evaluate a robotaxi’s safety claims?
Look beyond a sensor count or a large processing number. A meaningful evaluation asks what the system was designed to do, where it operated and how incidents were measured.
- Operating domain: Identify the cities, roads, weather restrictions, speeds and service hours covered by the claim.
- Automation responsibility: Determine whether the service is driverless, supervised by an onboard operator or supported by remote assistance.
- Sensor redundancy: Check whether cameras, lidar and radar provide independent measurements or merely duplicate the same failure mode.
- Fallback behavior: Ask what happens after a blocked sensor, lost localization, map mismatch, communications outage or software fault.
- Evidence quality: Prefer incident rates with defined exposure, dates and independent methodology over marketing examples or raw sensor specifications.
- Geographic comparability: Do not compare a mild-weather pilot in a small mapped area with a broad consumer-driving claim as if they were equivalent.
No independent, dated, industry-wide crash-rate statistic is established by the evidence summarized here. Manufacturer specifications can explain how a system is intended to work, but they are not cross-company safety benchmarks.
What can go wrong, and how does the system respond?
Common technical challenges include sensor occlusion, unusual objects, temporary construction, ambiguous right-of-way, aggressive human driving, poor weather and stale map data. The important question is not whether such conditions exist; it is how the stack manages uncertainty.

A robust response may include reducing speed, increasing following distance, waiting for a clearer gap, stopping before an intersection, rerouting around a blocked lane or handing the situation to a remote support team. If the vehicle cannot meet its operating conditions, ending the trip at a safe location may be preferable to continuing with degraded perception.
Passengers should follow the service’s instructions, keep doors and sensor areas clear, avoid distracting emergency procedures and report unusual behavior through the operator’s support channel. The vehicle’s ability to drive itself does not eliminate the need for defined pickup locations, emergency access and human oversight procedures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do robotaxis work in heavy rain or snow?
They may continue within an operator’s approved weather envelope because radar and other redundant sensors can retain useful measurements when visibility falls. Severe conditions can still trigger slower operation, trip refusal or a safe stop, and the permitted weather range differs by fleet and city.
What happens if a robotaxi loses its map or GPS signal?
Localization can combine positioning data with onboard observations of lanes, curbs and fixed objects. If confidence drops below the system’s limit, it can slow, stop or request assistance rather than rely on an uncertain position; the exact fallback is operator-specific.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a robotaxi recognize a police officer or emergency hand signal?
Cameras and prediction models can be trained to interpret uniforms, gestures and temporary traffic direction, but recognition is probabilistic and context-dependent. Emergency scenes may therefore produce conservative behavior, a pause or remote assistance instead of an immediate maneuver.
Are robotaxi rides recorded inside the cabin?
Cabin recording policies are separate from the exterior sensing needed to drive. Whether audio or video is collected, how long it is retained and who can access it depends on the operator’s privacy policy and local law, so passengers should check those terms before riding.
