What counts as a game adaptation in these franchises?
“Based on a game” can describe several different relationships. A named-game adaptation has a defined source boundary. You can ask whether the film keeps the source’s protagonist, setting, central mystery and sequence of events. A franchise adaptation has a much wider boundary: it may draw on recurring characters and world rules without matching any one campaign. The Resident Evil and Pokémon examples cover both ends of that spectrum.

- Identify the source boundary. For the 2002 Resident Evil, use the franchise’s concepts rather than claiming the first game is the complete screenplay. For Detective Pikachu, use the Nintendo 3DS game because the connection is explicit.
