Radiation in cozy-leaning survival games is usually a readable problem, not an irreversible death sentence. You hear or see the warning, measure how quickly exposure is accumulating, equip a countermeasure, then repair, wash, shelter or drive away from the source. The same idea appears in four distinct forms: Subnautica uses a temporary danger zone, Abiotic Factor tracks a personal dose, Oxygen Not Included simulates radiation tile by tile and turns it into a colony resource, while Pacific Drive makes contamination a maintenance problem for both driver and car.
That design gives radiation a useful place beside hunger, thirst and base building. The best loot is often inside the hot area, but preparation and a clear exit route turn the trip into a solvable puzzle. The details below explain what each game measures, what the thresholds mean and how to recover.

Why do cozy survival games use radiation?
Radiation works as a mid-game gate because it communicates danger clearly and offers several kinds of counterplay. A Geiger click, colored overlay, green screen haze or red junction tells you that normal scavenging rules have changed. A suit, medicine, toilet, shower or garage then gives you a practical answer. Finally, the source can often be disabled, shielded or left behind.
This is different from radiation systems built around permanent attrition. In these games, exposure is bounded by thresholds, equipment and location. The hazard may still make you vomit, drain health or damage a vehicle, but it generally does not turn an old save into an unplayable contaminated map.

What are the three radiation models?
Most examples fit one of three models. Knowing the model tells you which number to watch and which mistake is most costly.
Zone model: Subnautica
Radiation belongs to a geographic area around the crashed Aurora. You are safe outside the boundary and take damage while inside it. Distance from the wreck changes the visual intensity, but the key decision is whether to enter and how long to stay.
The Tool Desk

Exposure builds on a person, a car or both. Carrying radioactive objects can be as dangerous as standing beside a machine. The route therefore includes dose budgeting, temporary resistance and a plan for clearing contamination after the trip.
Simulation and resource model: Oxygen Not Included
Radiation is simulated as rads per cycle across tiles and emitted by buildings, materials, creatures and space. Duplicants and plants absorb it, and the same radiation can power research, mutate crops or sanitize germs. Avoidance is only one valid strategy.
How does radiation work in Subnautica?
Subnautica treats radiation as damage from the Aurora’s drive-core accident. Entering the affected area triggers a HUD warning and Geiger-counter audio. Remaining there gradually reduces health; leaving the zone stops the radiation damage. Nearer the wreck, the screen becomes fuzzy, green and blurred, so the game gives both an audio and a visual range indicator.
The Subnautica Wiki records a 675-metre radius before the Aurora explodes and a 950-metre radius afterward. The boundary is centered at approximately (1038, −3.4, −163.1). It does not normally reach Lifepod 5 unless a Reefback physically nudges the pod. The Crash Zone, southern Bulb Zone, eastern Mushroom Forest, eastern Safe Shallows, northeast Grassy Plateaus and southeast Kelp Forest receive the strongest impact, with partial effects along several starter-biome edges.

How do you get the Radiation Suit?
- Wait for the Aurora’s explosion. The blueprint then unlocks automatically; the PDA says, “For your convenience the radiation suit has been added to your blueprint database.”
- Craft and equip all three pieces: Radiation Suit, Radiation Gloves and Radiation Helmet. The suit only provides complete protection when the full set occupies all three equipment slots.
- Carry a Repair Tool before entering the wreck. You need it to fix every drive-core breach in the Aurora’s drive room.
Alterra’s databank describes the item as: “This suit fully protects against the effects of radiation during land, sea and space exploration. – Safety rated up to 400 Sv/hr – Cross-compatible with all AEP suit functionality – Sleek ‘The Radiation Suit: A necessary precaution in a post-MAD world.’” Swapping one piece for a Rebreather or another helmet gives up full immunity in exchange for that item’s benefit.
When can you stop wearing the suit?
Repairing the breaches does not remove the field immediately. The Subnautica Wiki reports that the radiation zone disappears completely 3 days and 10 hours after the repairs are finished. At that point the Aurora and Crash Zone can be explored without the suit. A Nuclear Reactor PDA description can sound as if the suit remains permanently necessary, but the repaired drive-core event is the rule that removes this particular hazard.
How do you manage and cure radiation sickness in Abiotic Factor?
Abiotic Factor uses a personal accumulation meter in its underground laboratory. A handheld Geiger Counter shows ENV, the environmental rate in rads per second, and YOU, your accumulated dose. Hold the device and left-click to toggle its display. The keychain version reports only the environmental rate, so it cannot tell you when your own dose has crossed a treatment threshold.
What do the Abiotic Factor thresholds mean?
| Accumulated dose | Effect | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| More than 6 rads | Radiation Tingle | Nausea flavor text without a mechanical penalty. The official description says, “You’ve been exposed to radiation and feel a bit nauseous.” |
| More than 35 rads | Radiation Sickness | Vomiting drains hunger and thirst. The condition clears after vomiting twice. |
| More than 50 rads | Irradiated | The stronger condition uses the same vomit-based recovery rule and a harsher status effect. |
Rads come from standing near sources and from carrying radioactive items, including power cells, Leyak Essence, waste and some foods or drinks such as Kizz Cola. The practical mistake is watching only the room’s ENV value while ignoring the YOU value that determines sickness.

Which treatments and equipment work?
- Iodine Tablets: Medkit tablets remove 10 rads immediately and grant Rad Resistant, reducing incoming radiation by 50% for 15 minutes. They stack to five and do not spoil.
- Pentetic Acid Syringes: Crafted at First Aid level 4, they provide the same −10-rad and 50%-resistance effect.
- Green Fish Liver: Butchered Radfish provides the same in-game protection effect.
- Hazardous Materials Suit (Hazmat or Rat Suit): Reduces absorbed radiation by 90%, making it the strongest ordinary protection option.
- R.A.I.N. Shower: Removes all radiation at the cost of water and power, but does not grant a continuing resistance buff.
- Toilets and vomiting: Toilets reduce radiation according to the Continence system, while sickness vomiting lowers the dose as part of the recovery process.
Do not transfer the game’s logic to real medicine. Abiotic Factor uses one iodine item for many fictional Anteverse sources; real potassium iodide is specific to radioactive iodine and is not a general-purpose radiation antidote.
How do you stop a Radiation Leak event?
A Radiation Leak is a facility weather or event hazard rather than a permanent map condition. Guides place its shutoff button around the Control Tower or Blacksmith area. Reaching the button ends the event early, so the detect-budget-suit-shutoff sequence is safer than waiting in a contaminated room.

Late in the game, the system can reverse direction. A Reactor Armor perk called Gamma God, described in a 2025 guide, rewards maintaining roughly 30 to 34.99 rads with up to 43% movement speed and 4.25-times health regeneration. That is a situational build choice, not a reason to ignore the 35- and 50-rad thresholds during ordinary exploration.
How does radiation work in Oxygen Not Included: Spaced Out?
Radiation is a Spaced Out DLC simulation. Uranium Ore, the Research Reactor, Beeta hives, Wheezeworts, crashed satellites, space exposure, radbolts and nuclear waste emit ambient radiation in rads per cycle. The tile beneath a duplicant’s feet is the relevant absorption location, so floor layout and door placement matter as much as the source itself.
What do ONI radiation numbers mean?
| Absorbed dose for a regular duplicant | Result |
|---|---|
| 0–99 rads | No radiation sickness threshold reached |
| 100 rads | Minor sickness |
| 300 rads | Major sickness |
| 600 rads | Extreme sickness |
| 900 rads | Incapacitated |
The colony’s hazard bands are Completely Safe at 0, Mostly Safe above 0–100, Barely Safe at 100–200, Slight Hazard at 200–400, Significant Hazard at 400–2,000, Extreme Hazard at 2,000–4,000 and Maximum Hazard above 4,000 rads per cycle. Background space radiation varies by planetoid from 125 to 375 rads per cycle, according to the Oxygen Not Included Wiki.
How much protection does a Lead Suit provide?
A Lead Suit gives 66% radiation resistance, so exactly 34% of incoming radiation is absorbed. It also provides oxygen and temperature protection but imposes an Athletics penalty. Its flavor text captures the game’s tone: “Because exposure to radiation doesn’t grant Duplicants superpowers.” Seafood provides a separate 20% absorption reduction for two cycles; combined with a Lead Suit, absorption falls to 14%.
How do you remove absorbed radiation?
- A Basic Rad Pill removes 100 rads per cycle for one cycle.
- Using a latrine, outhouse or wall toilet removes 100 absorbed rads. Scheduling another bathroom break can therefore dump about 200 rads in a cycle.
- A Rad Eater trait removes 0.25 rads per second, equal to 150 per cycle, while converting the process into calories up to 50 kcal per cycle.
Most solids and gases block radiation. Airflow Tiles, Mesh Tiles, Pneumatic Doors, Wicker Doors and Solar Panels do not block it, so a “sealed” room using those pieces may still expose duplicants.
Why would a colony build radiation on purpose?
ONI makes radiation productive. It can sanitize Food Poisoning, Slimelung and Zombie Spores through a per-tick kill-rate formula. Radbolts become a late-game power and research projectile, while plant mutations require a controlled radiation budget. The design challenge is not simply to eliminate rads; it is to place sources, shielding and work schedules so the colony receives the benefit without pushing duplicants into sickness.

How does radiation affect the car in Pacific Drive?
Pacific Drive places radiation inside the Olympic Exclusion Zone’s road-trip loop. Irradiated areas harm the driver and slowly corrode the car. A secondary guide describes radioactive dust loading onto the vehicle when it enters a red zone; the dust is washed off at the garage shower. Longer exposure damages the body, makes metal glow and can give the driver radiation sickness treated with pills.
The car is unusually important because the vehicle’s condition is often a better indicator of a run than the driver’s health. Seth Rosen, the game’s lead designer, described it this way: “the car’s health is generally a better indicator of how a run is going than your own”. Check body panels, fuel and repair supplies before crossing a red junction, and leave while the wagon still has enough durability to reach the next gateway.
Radiation is not only a penalty in Pacific Drive. Some anomalies appear only in irradiated areas, and the best salvage can be inside the glow. The garage, radio and wagon create a cozy domestic counterpoint to the lonely exclusion zone: exposure is frightening on the road but becomes another maintenance chore once you return home.

The four games teach the same decision pattern even though their meters differ.
- Detect: Listen for Subnautica’s Geiger warning, read Abiotic Factor’s ENV and YOU values, open ONI’s Radiation Overlay or watch Pacific Drive’s red-zone and corrosion cues.
- Budget: Decide which threshold matters before entering. That may be a zone boundary, 6/35/50 rads, an ONI sickness band or the car’s remaining durability.
- Suit or medicate: Use all three Subnautica pieces, a 90%-resistant Hazmat Suit, ONI’s 66%-resistant Lead Suit, seafood, iodine or a vehicle repair plan.
- Shut off or leave: Repair the Aurora, press the Radiation Leak button, shield a reactor, use a shower or toilet, wash the car, or drive out before the exposure budget is exceeded.
Because each stage is visible and reversible, radiation creates tension without requiring a permanent restart. The “cozy” quality comes from the recovery action: a bathroom break, a powered shower, a garage wash or a repair job can undo what looked like a catastrophic mistake.
Which other cozy survival games have radiation?
The Planet Crafter is often grouped with cozy science-fiction survival because it has no combat and asks you to raise heat, oxygen and atmospheric pressure until a barren planet becomes habitable. The documented material here does not establish a player radiation-exposure meter; uranium used as reactor fuel is not evidence of one. Its 1.0 release was in April 2024, its 2.0 update in April 2026, and SciFiction reported more than two million copies sold by mid-2026.

No Man’s Sky uses environmental hazard protection and names radiation among its threats, but detailed per-planet radiation figures are not established here. Sheltered and 60 Seconds! Reatomized use contamination bars, iodine and expedition sickness in a harsher family-bunker format. Core Keeper has no documented radiation system in the available material.
Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on 14 May 2026, but its radiation rules are not documented here. Do not assume the original game’s suit, radius or repair timer carries over to the sequel.
What makes radiation feel cozy instead of punishing?
Cozy survival does not mean removing danger; it means making danger legible and giving the player agency. A warning arrives before the worst effect, protection is craftable or lootable, and a domestic routine clears the aftermath. Subnautica deletes the Aurora zone after a story repair, ONI turns rads into an engineering material, Abiotic Factor makes the scientist manage a measurable dose, and Pacific Drive lets the garage restore the relationship between driver and car.
That combination explains why radiation fits alongside base building and exploration: the hazard creates a reason to prepare, a place worth entering and a satisfying way home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can radiation permanently ruin a save in these games?
The documented systems are designed around recovery rather than permanent save contamination. Subnautica removes its Aurora field after the drive-core repair timer, while the other examples provide treatment, washing, shielding or a route out. Individual deaths or destroyed vehicles can still cost a run, so carrying a recovery item and keeping an exit route remains important.
Do real iodine tablets work like the Abiotic Factor item?
No. The game abstracts many fictional sources into one item that removes 10 rads and grants 15 minutes of resistance. Real potassium iodide protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine only; it is not a universal treatment for radiation exposure.
Is the Subnautica Radiation Suit needed for the whole game?
No. It is required for safe Aurora-area exploration until every drive-core breach is repaired and the in-game timer finishes. After the zone disappears, the suit is optional equipment rather than a permanent requirement.
Why does Oxygen Not Included make radiation useful?
Radiation supports several colony goals instead of serving only as damage. It can sanitize germs, produce radbolts for research and power systems, and trigger plant mutations, so a well-designed colony may deliberately create a controlled radiation room while shielding duplicants.
