Push-to-talk voice interfaces do not simply turn a microphone on and send a finished recording to an AI. While you hold the control, the application captures audio, buffers or streams it, decides where your turn ends, submits that turn to a realtime model, and then displays text, plays generated speech, or streams both. A visible transcript may be produced by a separate speech-recognition process, while the model itself can interpret the audio natively. That means the transcript is useful for captions, logs, and downstream text handling, but it is not always the exact representation the model used to answer.

What happens after you press a push-to-talk button?

A push-to-talk control supplies an explicit start-and-stop action for a spoken turn. The software still has to perform several separate jobs: capture microphone samples, transport them, establish the turn boundary, interpret the audio, generate a response, and render that response as text or speech.

  1. Capture: The application receives microphone audio while push-to-talk is active.
  2. Buffer or stream: Audio is appended to a temporary input buffer or sent in chunks during capture.
  3. Commit the turn: The client or server decides that the user has finished speaking.
  4. Interpret: A realtime model can process audio directly; an optional automatic speech-recognition (ASR) process can create a transcript.
  5. Generate: The model reasons over the turn, follows the session’s response settings, and may call tools in a voice-agent workflow.
  6. Deliver: Text, synthesized audio, transcript deltas, or combinations of those events are streamed back to the interface.

These stages are asynchronous. A transcript event can arrive before, during, or after response events, so a reliable interface treats each event type independently rather than assuming that transcription always precedes the answer.

How does the app capture and submit the audio?

The microphone is active only for the interaction policy chosen by the application. In a strict push-to-talk design, pressing the control starts capture and releasing it normally tells the client to finish the turn. The client then commits the bytes accumulated in its temporary input buffer. A streaming design sends audio chunks as they arrive, but still needs a rule for when those chunks constitute a complete user turn.

Manual commit after button release

With server-side voice activity detection disabled, the client owns the boundary. A typical sequence is:

  1. Open or reuse a realtime session.
  2. Begin recording when the user presses the button.
  3. Append each encoded audio chunk to the session’s input buffer.
  4. Stop appending when the user releases the button.
  5. Explicitly commit the buffered audio and request a response.

This approach makes the interaction easy to explain: the button defines when listening starts and ends. It also makes the application responsible for edge cases such as a very short press, an accidental release, or a release before the final audio chunk has reached the server.

Server voice activity detection

When server VAD is enabled, the service examines audio volume to detect speech and silence. It can automatically identify the end of an utterance and begin responding without requiring a separate manual commit. Push-to-talk can still be used as a permission control, while VAD handles the precise endpoint inside the allowed capture window.

VAD is useful when people pause naturally or release the button slightly late. Its weakness is that a pause can be mistaken for completion, especially when the speaker is thinking, spelling a name, or dictating punctuation. Thresholds and silence handling therefore affect both responsiveness and the risk of cutting off a thought.

Semantic turn detection

Semantic VAD uses a turn-detection model to estimate whether the speaker has completed an idea rather than relying only on volume. It can wait when an utterance trails off and respond sooner when the statement is clearly complete. This often produces more natural turn-taking, but waiting for greater confidence can add latency. The choice is a product decision: prioritize the fastest possible answer, or tolerate a little delay to reduce interruptions.

Does the AI transcribe speech before understanding it?

Not necessarily. In a native-audio realtime design, the model accepts audio directly. An input transcript can be enabled as a separate asynchronous ASR process for captions, accessibility, search, logging, or applications that need text after the turn. The transcript is guidance about the audio and may not exactly match the model’s interpretation.

The official Realtime API reference states: “Realtime API models accept audio natively, and thus input transcription is a separate process run on a separate ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) model.” This distinction matters when a user says something ambiguous, uses a proper name, or speaks over background noise. The model may infer the intended meaning from audio even when the displayed transcript contains a different word; conversely, downstream software that relies only on the transcript can lose information available in the audio signal.

When a transcript is essential

  • Visible captions: Show what the system believes it heard while the response is being prepared.
  • Text workflows: Pass recognized text to search, ticketing, analytics, or archival systems that do not accept audio.
  • Review and correction: Let users inspect names, numbers, and commands before an irreversible action.
  • Accessibility: Provide a written record when listening to generated speech is inconvenient.

If the product only needs direct spoken interaction, a transcript may remain optional. If text is used to trigger tools or store records, define how discrepancies between native audio interpretation and ASR output are handled.

How does the system know when a spoken turn is complete?

Turn detection is the boundary between “the user is still talking” and “the model may answer.” It is separate from microphone capture and separate from language understanding.

Strategy Who decides the boundary? Main advantage Main trade-off
Manual commit The client, usually on button release Predictable user control Requires careful buffering and explicit commit logic
Server VAD The service, using speech volume and silence Automatic endpointing and quick responses Pauses can end a turn prematurely
Semantic VAD A turn-detection model estimating completion of a thought More natural handling of trailing pauses May wait longer and increase perceived latency

Many products combine policies: the button limits when audio may be captured, while VAD or semantic VAD decides when an answer can begin. A visible state indicator should make that policy clear, such as “Listening,” “Sending,” and “Speaking.”

How does the AI create and return its answer?

After the input turn is committed, the realtime session creates a response according to its configured behavior. In a voice-agent session, the system can listen, reason, speak, and call tools. Other session types can concentrate on transcription or translation rather than a conversational answer.

The response does not have to arrive as one completed object. Text can be delivered as incremental deltas, and generated audio can be streamed in chunks. A client can begin displaying words or playing speech while the remainder is still being generated. The application should preserve ordering within each event stream and handle different streams arriving at different times.

Common output modes

  • Text only: Suitable for silent interfaces, chat history, and situations where users need to scan an answer.
  • Speech only: Useful for hands-busy or eyes-free interaction, provided the user can interrupt or stop playback.
  • Text and speech: Shows captions or a transcript while audio plays. Text and audio may advance at different rates.
  • Partial output: Displays or speaks chunks as they arrive, reducing wait-to-first-response time without claiming that the answer is complete.

Because transcription-completion events and response events can be interleaved, the UI should label them by role. A transcript is the system’s recognition of the user’s input; a response is the model’s output. They should not be merged into one undifferentiated message stream.

Which connection should a push-to-talk implementation use?

Transport depends on where the client and model run. The documented platform guidance identifies WebRTC for client-side applications, WebSocket for server-to-server connections, and SIP for telephony integration.

Transport Typical context Design implication
WebRTC Browser or other client-side application Designed for interactive media between the user device and service
WebSocket Server-to-server integration Lets a backend exchange realtime events and audio with the model
SIP Telephony systems Connects realtime voice behavior to phone-call infrastructure

The transport does not decide whether recognition is native audio or a separate ASR job. That is an input-processing choice. Likewise, changing transport does not remove the need to define turn boundaries, event ordering, interruption behavior, and failure recovery.

Does microphone placement change recognition behavior?

Microphone context affects the audio that reaches the recognizer. A close-talking headset is a near-field setup; a laptop microphone or conference-room device is far-field. Noise-reduction settings can use different profiles for those contexts.

Near-field capture generally places the microphone closer to the speaker’s mouth, while far-field capture has to contend with distance, room reflections, other speakers, and ambient sounds. The cited technical guidance explains these categories but does not establish a universally best device, a particular headset model, or a product-level accuracy percentage. Choose equipment based on the room, user mobility, echo conditions, and whether the interface must work for several people at once.

How should you design the push-to-talk interaction?

A dependable implementation makes each state observable and gives the user a way to recover from a mistaken boundary.

  1. Show readiness: Indicate that the session is connected and the microphone permission is available before the user presses the control.
  2. Mark capture: Change the control to a clear listening state while audio is being collected.
  3. Handle release deterministically: Stop capture, ensure the last buffered chunk is sent, and then commit the turn when manual mode is used.
  4. Expose processing: Distinguish “sending” or “thinking” from continued listening so the user does not speak over an uncommitted turn.
  5. Render streams separately: Keep user transcript text, assistant text, and generated audio playback as distinct channels.
  6. Support interruption: Provide a stop or cancel action for streamed speech and a retry path when recognition or generation fails.
  7. Record completion: Mark whether an answer finished, was interrupted, or ended with an error instead of silently leaving a partial response.

For hands-free behavior, automatic VAD can reduce button handling. For commands with high consequences, manual commit and a confirmation step make the boundary and intended action easier to verify.

What commonly goes wrong, and how can it be fixed?

The response starts before the speaker finishes

Check whether server VAD is ending the turn on a pause or whether semantic VAD is configured too aggressively. Increase the tolerance for pauses, use semantic detection, or keep manual commit for dictation and complex requests.

The last word is missing

In manual mode, verify that recording stops only after the final audio chunk has been appended and that the buffer is committed afterward. A release event that races the audio upload can create a clipped turn even when the microphone captured the word.

The transcript differs from what the assistant understood

This can be expected when native audio interpretation and asynchronous ASR are separate processes. Treat the transcript as a display or text-processing aid, and add confirmation when exact spelling, numbers, or names control an important action.

Captions appear after the answer begins

Do not block response rendering while waiting for a transcription-completion event. Keep transcript and response handlers independent, and update each region when its own events arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio playback sounds incomplete

Generated speech may arrive in chunks. Buffer enough audio for smooth playback, track the end-of-response signal, and distinguish a user interruption or network failure from a naturally completed stream.

The interface feels slow despite streaming

Turn detection can dominate perceived delay. Compare manual commit, server VAD, and semantic VAD under the same interaction policy, then decide whether earlier responses or fewer premature turns matter more for the use case. Avoid presenting illustrative configuration values as guaranteed latency; the cited material does not provide a general performance benchmark.

What should you decide before implementation?

  • Capture policy: Is audio allowed only while the button is held, or can VAD continue listening within a session?
  • Boundary policy: Will the client commit manually, will the server use volume-based VAD, or will semantic turn detection estimate completion?
  • Input representation: Does the model need native audio understanding, a separate transcript, or both?
  • Output contract: Should users receive text, speech, partial streams, or a selectable combination?
  • Transport: Is the deployment a browser client, a backend integration, or a telephone system?
  • Recovery: What happens after permission denial, an empty turn, a dropped connection, a clipped utterance, or an interrupted response?
  • Verification: Which requests require the user to review recognized text before a tool call or stored record is created?

The official documentation describes API patterns rather than independent measurements of recognition accuracy, real-world latency, or consumer microphone quality. Event names and behavior can also change as realtime APIs evolve, so implementation teams should verify the current reference for the specific platform version they deploy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can push-to-talk work without speech-to-text?

Yes. A native-audio realtime model can interpret the captured audio without exposing a transcript to the user. Speech-to-text is needed only when the product requires captions, searchable text, text-only downstream processing, or an audit record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does semantic voice activity detection feel slower than a button release?

Semantic detection waits for evidence that the speaker has completed a thought, including cases where the voice trails off. That extra judgment can avoid cutting off pauses but adds waiting time compared with committing immediately on release.

Should an app trust the displayed transcript for important commands?

The transcript is produced by a separate ASR process and may differ from the model’s native audio interpretation. For high-impact commands, show the recognized values and request confirmation before executing them.

What is the difference between streaming audio and streaming a response?

Streaming input sends microphone chunks to the service while the person is speaking. Streaming output sends generated text or audio chunks back while the model is still producing its answer; either direction can be enabled independently.
