Short answer: Siri, Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT follow different privacy rules. Classic Siri processes request audio on the device, but Apple may receive pseudonymous request metadata. Apple Intelligence handles many requests on-device and sends more complex work to Private Cloud Compute (PCC), which Apple says is stateless and inaccessible to Apple after fulfillment. ChatGPT is an optional OpenAI extension: it is not involved unless you enable it or explicitly ask Siri to use it.
The most private Apple-to-ChatGPT route is using the extension without signing in. Apple says OpenAI may use that request only to answer it, must not store the request or response except where legally required, and must not train on it. Signing in changes the boundary: your OpenAI account settings and consumer policies then govern retention, history and model-improvement use.
What leaves your iPhone depends on the route
There is no single “Siri privacy” setting that describes every request. The handling path matters more than the brand name on the button you press.

These are different commitments rather than a common privacy score. Apple describes device architecture and deletion requirements, while OpenAI’s rules depend heavily on whether you are signed in, your account type and your data-control settings.

Does Siri record everything you say?
Audio handling in classic Siri
Apple states that you do not sign in with an Apple Account to use Siri and that “the audio of your requests is processed entirely on your device thanks to the power of the Apple Neural Engine.” Apple also says it does not retain audio unless you choose to share it to improve Siri.
That is a statement about the audio recording, not a guarantee that no information about the request ever leaves the phone. Siri can send associated request data to Apple’s servers. Apple says server-processed or stored data is linked to a random identifier: a long string of letters and numbers, rather than your Apple Account.
Metadata is a separate privacy category
Apple’s legal Siri documentation lists examples of related request data: the request category, whether the request completed successfully, device specifications and configuration, performance statistics and approximate location when Location Services for Siri is enabled. Such metadata can help Apple operate and improve the service even when the spoken audio itself was processed locally.
Therefore, “Siri is private” should be read as “Siri processes request audio on-device and uses limited, pseudonymous metadata,” not “Apple receives nothing.” If you have enabled sharing to improve Siri, the audio-retention statement changes because you have opted into that use.
How Apple Intelligence changes the path
On-device first
Apple Intelligence analyzes a request to determine whether the device can handle it locally. When it can, the request and the required computation stay on the device. This is the most direct way to keep the content from being sent to a server.

Private Cloud Compute for harder requests
For a more complex operation, Apple Intelligence can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says only the data relevant to your request is processed on Apple silicon servers and then removed. Apple also says the data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is used only to fulfill the request.
Apple’s PCC security requirements are more specific than a general “we value privacy” statement. They say user data must never be available to anyone other than the user, including Apple staff during active processing, and must not be retained through logging or debugging after the response is returned.

How the claim can be checked
Apple publishes PCC server code and an Apple Intelligence/PCC transparency report. The report identifies model requests as OnDevice or PrivateCloudCompute and can be exported, giving you a record of which execution path was used. This is useful when a request contains sensitive material and you want to verify whether it stayed local or went through PCC.
PCC is still an Apple-operated cloud architecture, so it is not the same as local-only processing. Its privacy advantage is the published requirement that relevant data be ephemeral and inaccessible to Apple, rather than a claim that no network transmission occurs.
When does Apple send a request to ChatGPT?
The extension is optional and off by default
ChatGPT is a separate OpenAI service reached through an Apple extension. It is not automatically involved in every Siri or Apple Intelligence request. You must enable the extension, and Siri can either send a request after you explicitly say “Ask ChatGPT” or ask for confirmation when the wording is ambiguous.

To control the integration, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Leave Use ChatGPT off if you do not want the extension available. If you do use it, keep Confirm ChatGPT Requests on so Siri asks before sending an unclear request.

A ChatGPT request can include the prompt, attachments you select such as documents or photos, and limited associated context. Apple lists the current time zone, country, device type, language and feature used. Apple says the IP address is obscured from ChatGPT, while a general location approximated from the IP region is provided for fraud prevention and legal compliance.
This means Apple does not send all Siri audio or all Apple Intelligence prompts to OpenAI. The transfer happens when the ChatGPT extension is selected, and an attachment can contain far more information than the text of the question. Do not attach a private document or photo merely because Siri offers the option.
Is ChatGPT through Apple private without an account?
Apple’s no-account limits
Apple gives the strongest stated limits when you use the extension without signing in. Its policy says OpenAI must process your information solely to fulfill the request and must not store your information or any responses it provides unless applicable law requires it. Apple also says OpenAI must not use that information to improve or train its models.
Those are important boundaries: no ChatGPT account is created for the request, the Apple-stated purpose is answering it, and training is prohibited under the extension terms. The legal-exception wording still matters; “not stored” is not an absolute promise against every legally required retention.

Why signing in is a material change
When you sign in, Apple says your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI’s data-privacy policies apply. Apple further says OpenAI may log the request, attachments and session history and may use that data to train or improve models. The same Siri button therefore has a different privacy result depending on whether an account is connected.
If you only need an occasional answer and the no-account extension meets your needs, do not sign in. If you need saved conversations or account-specific features, sign in deliberately and review OpenAI’s controls before sending sensitive content.

ChatGPT app and website defaults
Once you move from the Apple extension into the ChatGPT app or website, the Apple extension’s no-account promise no longer describes the conversation. OpenAI’s consumer guidance says content from individual plans may be used to improve models depending on the Improve the model for everyone setting.
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone when you do not want new conversations used for model improvement under that control. This setting is separate from Apple’s Use ChatGPT switch.

Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not enter your normal history or memory. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories and are not used for model improvement while they are temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety, so Temporary Chat reduces ordinary account use but is not an instant, zero-retention guarantee.

Business and managed workspaces
Business and administratively managed workspace defaults differ from individual consumer accounts. Do not apply the consumer setting or the Apple extension’s no-account rule to a work account without checking the policy that governs that workspace.
How to choose the least-exposing path
- Use classic Siri for routine commands. Its request audio is processed on-device, while remembering that related metadata can still be handled by Apple.
- Let Apple Intelligence stay on-device when possible. For complex requests, PCC may be used; Apple says only relevant data is processed and removed after fulfillment.
- Keep ChatGPT disabled until you need it. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and leave Use ChatGPT off by default.
- Require confirmation. With the extension enabled, keep Confirm ChatGPT Requests on so an ambiguous Siri request is not forwarded unexpectedly.
- Minimize the payload. Avoid attaching sensitive documents or photos unless the answer genuinely requires them. Check an attachment before confirming.
- Prefer no-account use for one-off questions. Apple’s strongest storage and training restrictions apply to the extension when you are not signed in.
- Review OpenAI controls after signing in. In Settings > Data Controls, choose whether to allow model improvement and use Temporary Chat for conversations that should stay out of history and memory.
- Audit Apple Intelligence routing. Enable and export the Apple Intelligence/PCC report to see whether requests were marked
OnDeviceorPrivateCloudCompute.
Common privacy misunderstandings
“Siri never sends anything to Apple.”
That overstates the promise. Apple describes on-device audio processing but also lists request metadata that may be sent or stored with a random identifier.
“Apple Intelligence always stays on my iPhone.”
It does not. Apple Intelligence chooses on-device processing first, but complex work can use PCC. The relevant distinction is that Apple says PCC data is not retained or accessible to Apple after fulfillment.

“Apple sends every Siri prompt to OpenAI.”
ChatGPT is an opt-in extension. Only requests routed to ChatGPT, including any selected attachments and limited context, go to OpenAI.
“No-account ChatGPT has the same rules as my signed-in account.”
They are different policy boundaries. Apple’s no-account terms prohibit storage and model training except where legally required; signing in activates your OpenAI account settings and applicable consumer policies.
“Temporary Chat means nobody can retain the conversation.”
Temporary Chat excludes normal history, memory and model improvement, but OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
Bottom line for iPhone users
For the smallest exposure, use classic Siri or on-device Apple Intelligence, keep the ChatGPT extension off until needed, require confirmation, and avoid sending attachments. If you do use ChatGPT through Siri, the no-account extension has Apple’s clearest limits: processing only to answer the request, no storage or training except where law requires it. Signing in is a deliberate trade-off for account features and history, because OpenAI’s account rules then replace those narrower extension limits.
