Predictive movement technology lets a multiplayer game show movement before the server has confirmed it. The client responds to your input immediately, then checks its estimate against the authoritative server and corrects any difference. Done well, this makes high-latency play feel responsive without giving the client control over collisions, abilities or contested outcomes. Done poorly, it produces the familiar snap, slide or “rubber-band” that sends a character back to an earlier position.

The next generation of online games will combine local prediction, rollback, dead reckoning and, in some cases, machine-learning forecasts. The important change is not that games will eliminate network delay; they will spend client CPU, bandwidth and engineering effort making that delay less visible while keeping the server in charge.

What predictive movement technology actually does

Every networked game has a gap between what a player does and what the server knows. You press a movement key or tilt a stick, the input travels to the server, the server simulates the next game tick, and an updated state travels back. At the speed of a competitive game, waiting for that round trip makes controls feel heavy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Predictive movement fills the gap with a temporary local estimate. The client runs the movement simulation immediately from the player’s latest input, displays the result, and sends the input to the authoritative server. When the server’s snapshot arrives, the client compares the confirmed state with its predicted state. If they differ, it returns to the confirmed simulation tick, applies the buffered inputs again, and displays the corrected result.

The client-side prediction loop

  1. Capture input on a fixed tick. Record movement, jump, crouch or other inputs at a defined simulation interval rather than relying on an uncontrolled render-frame rate.
  2. Simulate locally. Run the same movement rules, or a compatible client-side version, immediately on the player’s machine.
  3. Send input to the server. The client reports what the player tried to do, not an unquestionable claim about its final position.
  4. Receive an authoritative snapshot. The server processes collisions, abilities, physics interactions and other rules that must remain trusted.
  5. Compare states. The client checks its predicted position, velocity and other rollback-relevant values against the server’s state at the same tick.
  6. Rewind and replay when necessary. If the states differ, the client resets to the authoritative tick and replays the stored inputs that followed it.
  7. Smooth small corrections. A visual presentation layer can ease a minor position adjustment while gameplay logic uses the exact authoritative state.

Roblox’s server-authority guidance describes the boundary succinctly: “the server is the single source of truth for the entire game state, and clients are only trusted to report their own inputs.” That boundary is what allows immediate feedback without treating a modified client’s claimed position as fact.

Why the server remains authoritative

A client cannot reliably know another player’s next input, a hidden trigger, a server-only stun, or the result of a collision involving several players. If the client were allowed to publish its own position as final, a cheater could alter movement or claim impossible interactions. Prediction therefore concerns presentation and provisional simulation; the server still decides the state that can affect everyone else.

Why prediction changes the way movement feels

Without prediction: accurate but delayed

In a strictly server-driven presentation, an input becomes visible only after the server receives, simulates and returns it. That process may be correct, but the delay is obvious in a fast shooter, racing game or platformer. Roblox characterizes this round trip as potentially “laggy, unresponsive, and unplayable” for fast games.

With prediction: immediate response, eventual correction

Prediction makes the local character begin moving on the input tick. A player can turn, jump or brake while packets are still in flight. The physical network delay has not disappeared; the client has hidden much of its effect by displaying a plausible result first.

The trade-off is correction. A local estimate can be wrong because the server applied a collision, another player occupied a space, an ability changed movement, or a packet arrived late. When the correction is small, smoothing can make it nearly invisible. When the error is large, the character may snap backward, slide through a short path or appear to teleport. Those visible corrections are the source of “rubber-banding.”

Client prediction, rollback and dead reckoning compared

These terms overlap but describe different scopes and responsibilities. A game can use more than one of them at once.

Approach Primary scope How it works Main benefit Main cost or risk
Client-side prediction The local player The client applies its own inputs immediately, then reconciles with the server snapshot. Responsive local controls. Correction artifacts and the need for matching simulation rules.
Rollback and resimulation Any rollback-capable simulation, often players and interactions Restore a confirmed historical state and replay buffered inputs after late information arrives. Accurate outcomes despite delayed updates. Several simulation iterations may be required in one rendered frame.
Dead reckoning Usually remote entities Extrapolate from recent position, direction and velocity, often assuming continued motion. Fewer updates and smoother remote movement. Errors grow quickly when an entity turns, stops or is affected by an unseen event.
Server-side forecasting Players or interactions affected by latency The server predicts likely future actions from historical data and current game state. Can hide delay while preserving central authority. Model validation, fairness and explainability become server responsibilities.

Rollback is more than a visual rewind

Rollback requires simulation code that can reproduce the same result from the same state and inputs. The engine must retain enough history to restore a tick, replay inputs in order and then present the corrected state. Unity’s documentation warns that this is CPU-intensive: its example shows a 300 millisecond connection requiring about 22 frames of resimulation. The exact workload depends on tick rate, simulation complexity and how many entities participate; the example is not a universal performance guarantee.

Remote-player extrapolation has a different problem

Your client receives another player’s last known state but not that player’s next input. A dead-reckoning system may continue the player along the recent velocity and direction until a new update arrives. This is cheap and often convincing for straight movement, but a sudden turn or server-only event invalidates the estimate. Interpolation, which displays a deliberately delayed sequence of known states, is safer but adds presentation delay. Games choose among prediction, interpolation and extrapolation per entity and per interaction.

Can AI predict player movement?

Yes, but “AI prediction” usually means a targeted forecasting component, not an autonomous system that knows a player’s intentions. Traditional dead reckoning estimates the next state from recent position, direction and velocity. A machine-learning model can decide whether that extrapolation is likely to remain valid and, when a direction change is likely, estimate the new direction.

What the Smart Reckoning study demonstrated

A 2020 study by E. P. Duarte and colleagues, using real World of Warcraft traces and area-of-interest information, proposed a two-stage strategy. The first model predicted whether ordinary dead reckoning would succeed. If a change was likely, a second model predicted the new direction. The study trained the model offline, so a shipped predictor would not need continuous in-game training.

Reported result Value How to interpret it
Best Bagging configuration accuracy 78.76% Overall accuracy in the study’s World of Warcraft trace experiment.
Bandwidth savings for Bagging 78.76% Reported savings versus using no movement predictor in that comparison setup.
Baseline dead-reckoning accuracy 44.54% Result reported for the baseline comparison dataset.
Average inference time 98 microseconds Average measured in the authors’ test setup.

These percentages are study-specific measurements, not benchmarks that every commercial game should expect. They depend on the trace, area-of-interest rules, model, error threshold and evaluation method. A game with different movement patterns, tick rates or interaction density would need its own validation.

Where machine learning helps—and where it does not

A predictor is most useful when movement is repetitive enough to forecast and when an update can be suppressed without changing gameplay. If the model is confident that a remote character will continue on its current path, the server or client can avoid sending redundant state. If confidence falls below a threshold, the system sends a fresh update or switches to a more conservative mode.

Machine learning does not remove the need for authoritative collision checks, deterministic rollback code or anti-cheat controls. A model can be wrong, and a wrong forecast near a doorway, projectile or moving platform can be more damaging than an extra network update. Confidence thresholds and correction budgets are therefore part of the design, not optional polish.

Does prediction reduce lag?

It reduces perceived input latency, not the physical transit time of packets. The server still receives input after the network delay, and other players still cannot see a state before the server has processed it. Prediction makes the local response immediate enough that the delay is less noticeable.

The improvement has real costs:

  • CPU time: rollback may replay many ticks in one render frame. A 300 millisecond connection can require about 22 resimulation frames in Unity’s documented example.
  • Memory: the client must buffer inputs and enough state history to rewind to an authoritative tick.
  • Engineering complexity: client and server movement rules must remain compatible, and bugs can appear only under packet loss or unusual timing.
  • Bandwidth trade-offs: a reliable predictor can suppress redundant updates, while frequent corrections or low confidence can increase traffic.
  • Visual complexity: the game needs smoothing rules for small errors and a deliberate response to large errors.

There is no published universal latency threshold at which prediction is always beneficial. The right point depends on the game’s tick rate, movement speed, simulation cost, interaction density and tolerance for correction.

What developers need to build

1. Define the authority boundary

List which results must be server-decided: collisions, damage, inventory, ability activation, scoring and contested objectives are typical examples. Let the client predict the responsiveness-sensitive portion, but never let a client-authored position override the server’s final state.

2. Use a fixed, replayable simulation tick

Input sampling, state snapshots and replay need stable tick identifiers. The client should be able to say which input produced which provisional state, while the server can acknowledge a specific tick and the client can discard confirmed history safely.

3. Make movement deterministic enough to resimulate

Rollback is not limited to storing a position. It may require velocity, grounded state, timers, jump counters, collision-relevant flags and any other value that affects future results. Client and server must use compatible arithmetic and ordering, or corrections will recur even when the network is healthy.

4. Separate gameplay state from presentation smoothing

Gameplay systems should use the authoritative or reconciled state. A visual layer may ease a small positional difference over several render frames, but it must not hide a collision result from hit detection or allow a cosmetic interpolation to become a gameplay position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Set correction and confidence policies

Choose an error threshold for ordinary smoothing, a larger threshold that triggers a hard correction, and a policy for repeated failures. For remote entities, confidence can determine whether to extrapolate, interpolate, request an update or stop movement temporarily. Record these decisions so network bugs can be reproduced from logs.

6. Test adverse timing, not only a clean connection

  • Inject latency, jitter and packet loss separately; they expose different failures.
  • Test turns, stops, jumps, collisions, moving platforms and server-only status effects.
  • Measure correction distance and frequency, not only average frame rate.
  • Compare CPU and memory usage during the worst rollback window, not just during ordinary play.
  • Verify that a modified client cannot turn a prediction feature into a movement or damage exploit.

How predictive movement could change game design

Faster traversal and denser scenes

If a game can hide more of the network delay, designers can support faster vehicles, more agile characters and busier multiplayer spaces without making every action wait for confirmation. Prediction does not make every interaction safe at high speed, but it expands the range of movement that can feel immediate.

Selective simulation by importance

Predicting every entity at full fidelity is expensive. Engines can predict the local player and nearby threats while interpolating distant characters or low-priority objects. Unity documents per-entity prediction choices and warns that prediction carries a cost. A practical system spends rollback work where a player can notice or where an interaction can change the outcome.

Bandwidth-aware massively multiplayer worlds

In a large online world, redundant movement updates consume capacity even when an entity is following an obvious path. A validated predictor can suppress updates inside an error threshold and send a correction only when the forecast becomes unreliable. The Smart Reckoning results show why this is attractive, but the reported savings apply to its World of Warcraft trace experiment rather than to all massively multiplayer games.

More deterministic and replayable code

Rollback encourages simulation code that can be replayed from recorded inputs. That benefits debugging, replays and desynchronization analysis, but it also limits designs that depend on uncontrolled timing, hidden local state or non-reproducible physics. Teams may need to isolate those systems or mark them as non-rollbackable.

New feedback for prediction failure

A large correction should communicate a reason when possible: a blocked path, rejected ability, collision or server-side stun is more understandable than an unexplained teleport. Designers may use camera easing, contact effects or short state indicators, but the presentation must not disguise an authoritative result in a way that confuses competitive play.

Server forecasting and the emerging hybrid architecture

MPAI’s SPG-MDL V1.0 introduction groups latency mitigation into client prediction, time delay and time warp, and describes a server-level approach that forecasts player actions from historical data and current game state when latency-affected clients are detected. The quoted model is important because it moves some prediction responsibility to the server while retaining a central view of the game.

A likely hybrid architecture uses the server as the arbiter, client prediction for immediate local movement, interpolation or conservative extrapolation for remote entities, and model confidence to decide when updates are necessary. Such a system can reduce visible delay and redundant traffic, but it must validate models against unusual behavior, keep outcomes fair between low- and high-latency players, and ensure that a prediction error cannot decide a contested result by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why multiplayer games rubber-band—and what can improve it

The server rejected the predicted path

A collision, blocked doorway, ability effect or other player may have changed the authoritative result. The client should rewind to the server tick and replay inputs; smoothing can reduce the visual jump only when the error is small.

The client and server simulations diverged

Different movement constants, tick ordering, collision geometry or floating-point behavior can create corrections even on a stable connection. Shared or carefully matched simulation code and deterministic state capture are the remedy.

Updates arrive late or out of order

Jitter and packet reordering make an old snapshot appear after a newer one. Tick numbers and snapshot sequencing let the client ignore stale data and reconcile against the correct history.

The predictor is too aggressive

Long extrapolation windows and high error thresholds make motion look smooth until the correction becomes severe. Shorter horizons, confidence-based fallbacks and more frequent authoritative updates usually produce smaller errors at the cost of bandwidth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

Teams deciding whether to add predictive movement should evaluate each candidate system against the same questions:

  • Responsiveness: Does local input need to appear before a server round trip completes?
  • Authority and cheat resistance: Which machine makes the final decision about movement and interactions?
  • Correction visibility: How often can an error become a snap, slide or teleport?
  • CPU and memory: Can the worst rollback window fit within the frame budget and device limits?
  • Bandwidth: Can prediction suppress redundant updates, or will frequent corrections cost more?
  • Determinism: Can client and server replay identical simulation steps from the same inputs?
  • Scope: Is prediction needed only for the local player, for nearby remote entities, for selected interactions or for the whole simulation?

For a twitch game with responsive controls and a manageable movement model, local prediction plus server reconciliation is often the clearest starting point. For a deterministic action game, full rollback may justify its replay cost. For a large persistent world, selective dead reckoning or machine-learning-assisted update suppression may matter more than predicting every local interaction.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

Official Unity and Roblox guidance establishes the implementation principles: apply input immediately, preserve server authority, and expect rollback to consume additional computation. The Smart Reckoning paper supplies promising, but narrowly scoped, measurements from World of Warcraft traces. The 2019 “Predictive Simulation” preprint explores regression and artificial neural networks for networked interactive environments, supporting the direction without proving that neural prediction benefits every commercial game.

Prediction is therefore best understood as an engineering toolkit rather than a universal upgrade. It can make controls feel immediate, reduce redundant updates and support richer multiplayer scenes. It cannot repeal network physics, guarantee perfect remote-player forecasts or replace authoritative validation. The games most likely to benefit will combine a small, deterministic prediction surface with measured correction policies and a clear answer to who decides the final state.
