PlayStation Plus cloud streaming lets eligible Premium subscribers start certain games on a PS5 or PlayStation Portal without downloading the game first. A streamed game stores its progress in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage, while a downloaded game stores its save on the PS5 or PS4 console. Those locations are not synchronized automatically when you change play modes: you must copy the save through PlayStation Plus cloud storage (called online storage on PS4). Streaming also depends on the game, your country, account type, device and network quality. Sony’s current requirements and eligible-title list can change, so check the official cloud-streaming page and its Cloud Streaming Game Finder before starting.
What is PlayStation Plus cloud streaming?
Cloud streaming runs a supported game on PlayStation’s servers and sends the interactive video to your compatible device. You can begin playing without waiting for the full game to download or install on the console. Your controller input travels back to the service, so the experience depends on both the game server and the quality of your internet connection.
Cloud streaming is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit. Sony does not make it available to every PlayStation Plus member, and it is not a feature of Essential or Extra memberships. Cloud storage for saves is a separate benefit available across the three plans, as shown in Sony’s PlayStation Plus plan information.

What do I need before I can stream a game?
You need all of the following conditions to be true:

- A supported device: a PS5 console or PlayStation Portal for the currently documented PS5 cloud-streaming selection.
- A broadband connection that meets Sony’s published minimum speed.
- A game that Sony currently marks as eligible for streaming.
Sony’s US feature page lists the United States, Canada, Japan and a range of European countries, with exclusions for some overseas territories. It is a current regional list rather than a guarantee of worldwide access; availability can change by country and over time. Use the country selector and the current feature page for your location.
Which games and devices can stream?
Eligibility is decided per game
Streaming covers selected games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected eligible digital PS5 games that you own. A game appearing in a catalog, or being in your digital library, does not by itself prove that it can stream. Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder and the game’s store listing are the authoritative checks, and the selection can change with time and region.
PS5 and PlayStation Portal support
Sony currently describes cloud streaming on PS5 consoles and PlayStation Portal. Portal’s cloud option should not be interpreted as support for every PS5 or PS4 title: the documented Portal selection is PS5 games that Sony has made eligible for cloud streaming. This service is different from Remote Play; cloud streaming runs from PlayStation’s cloud infrastructure rather than streaming a game from your own console.
How fast must my internet connection be?
Sony publishes 5 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload as the minimum to establish a cloud-streaming session. It also lists higher targets for specific output resolutions. These are Sony’s recommendations, not performance guarantees: the game and the wider network environment affect the result.

If a session fails to start, first verify that both upload and download speeds meet at least 5 Mbps. If the game starts but quality varies, compare your connection with the resolution recommendations and remember that Sony does not promise a fixed experience at any particular speed.
Where does a streamed game save your progress?
The save location depends on whether you are streaming or running a local download. Streaming storage and console storage are separate, which is why changing modes does not silently merge your progress.

A streamed save is not automatically placed in the console-save slot for a downloaded copy of the same game. Sony’s instructions for saving and transferring PlayStation Plus game progress require an explicit copy through cloud or online storage.

How do I move a save from streaming to a downloaded game?
Copy the streamed save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage first, then copy it from cloud storage to the console that will run the downloaded game. The labels and menus differ between PS5 and PS4.
On PS5
- While using the streamed game, open the Control Center and select the PlayStation Plus card.
- Choose Manage Saved Data.
- Use the streamed-game save options to copy the data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- On the PS5 that has the downloaded game, open Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings, and select the cloud-storage option to download or copy the save to console storage.
- Start the downloaded game and choose the copied progress if the game presents more than one save.
The first copy changes the save’s location; it does not install the game or convert the streamed copy into a local installation.
On PS4
- Open Settings, then Application Saved Data Management.
- Select Saved Data in Game Streaming Storage.
- Choose Copy to Online Storage and select the game and save files.
- On the PS4 containing the downloaded game, use Application Saved Data Management and the online-storage copy/download path to place the files in the console’s saved-data storage.
To take progress in the opposite direction, copy the console save to online storage and select the streaming-game storage destination when Sony’s menu offers that choice. Keep the transfer direction in mind: uploading to cloud storage and downloading to the other destination are separate actions.
Do downloaded-game saves sync automatically?
Downloaded saves use the console cloud-save workflow, not the game-streaming storage workflow. On PS5, open Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings. PS5 games can use automatic synchronization between the console and cloud. PS4 games can use automatic upload when configured, but a PS4 save must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage before a PS5 can use it.
On PS4, enable automatic upload under Settings → Application Saved Data Management. Automatic upload sends the console’s save to online storage; it does not make that file appear in game-streaming storage without the separate copy procedure.
Sony lists separate capacities of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. It also lists a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are published PlayStation Support limits and can be revised; see the current PS5 cloud-storage support page for management instructions.
Should I stream or download a game?
Choose based on the title’s eligibility, your connection and whether you need a save to move between play modes.

Streaming is most useful when you want to try an eligible title without waiting for a large download or filling local storage. Downloading is the more predictable choice when the title is not streamable, your connection is below Sony’s recommendations, or you intend to play primarily from a console without a continuous streaming connection.

- The game cannot be started from the cloud: Check the Cloud Streaming Game Finder and the store listing. Catalog membership or ownership alone does not establish eligibility.
- The streaming option is missing: Confirm that the account is an adult account, the subscription is Premium, the device is a supported PS5 or Portal, and your country is currently listed by Sony.
- The session will not start: Test upload and download speeds separately. Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps in each direction; higher resolutions have higher recommendations.
- Your progress is absent after downloading: The streamed save remains in game-streaming storage until you copy it to cloud storage and then to the console. Check that both copy stages completed and that you selected the same game.
- A PS4 save is not available on a PS5: Automatic upload does not place it directly in PS5 console storage. Download the PS4 save manually from cloud storage using the saved-data settings.
- You expected a streamed save to appear in a local save list: Streaming storage and console storage are distinct. Use the device-specific transfer path rather than starting the game again and overwriting progress.
Is PlayStation Plus cloud streaming the same as Remote Play?
No. Cloud streaming launches an eligible game from PlayStation’s cloud servers on a supported PS5 or PlayStation Portal. Remote Play is a separate feature that connects to a game running on your own PlayStation console. The save rules in this guide apply to PlayStation Plus cloud streaming and downloaded console games; do not assume that Remote Play follows the same storage path.
What is the practical save rule to remember?
Streaming saves follow the streaming service, while downloaded saves belong to the console. You can resume streamed play on another compatible streaming device, but crossing from streaming to a download—or from a download to streaming—requires a deliberate cloud-storage copy. Verify eligibility, region and network requirements before relying on streaming for a particular game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream a game that is included in every PlayStation Plus catalog?
No. Catalog inclusion and cloud-streaming eligibility are separate. Sony marks only selected catalog and eligible digital PS5 titles for streaming, so check the game finder for the specific title and country before subscribing or deleting a local installation.
Does the 1,000-file limit apply to PS5 saves too?
Sony’s published 1,000-file maximum is specified for PS4 saved-data files. The same support information lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, but it does not state a matching PS5 file-count cap.

Yes. Sony says a subscriber can resume streamed play on another compatible streaming device without a separate transfer step. That convenience applies to streamed play; it does not automatically convert the save for a downloaded console copy.
Does a 52 Mbps connection guarantee 2160p streaming?
No. 52 Mbps is Sony’s recommendation for 2160p, while 5 Mbps in each direction is the stated session minimum. Sony notes that actual performance also varies with the game and the quality of the network environment.
