Underwater photogrammetry turns overlapping photographs of a shipwreck into a textured, measurable 3D model. Divers or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) photograph the site from multiple angles and distances; software matches features shared between images, estimates their positions in space, builds a point cloud and surface mesh, then maps the photographs’ colors onto that mesh. The quality of the result depends on what the camera records: complete overlap, sharp images, useful lighting and reliable scale references matter as much as the processing.
What does underwater photogrammetry produce?
Photogrammetry is a way to approximate a three-dimensional structure from two-dimensional images. For a shipwreck, the input is a set of photographs showing repeated parts of the site from different viewpoints. The output is a 3D representation assembled from those shared visual details—not a single photograph stretched over a shape.
The software first estimates where the camera was and where visible features lie relative to one another. It uses those relationships to create a point cloud, a collection of points representing the wreck’s surfaces. A surface mesh connects those points into a continuous form. Finally, the software projects pixels from the original images onto the mesh, producing a colored, textured model.

The model is a record of the parts that were visible and photographed. It can help someone examine the site remotely, but it cannot show an area that the images never captured or reveal detail hidden by an obstruction. Coverage in the photographs therefore sets a fundamental limit on what the finished model can represent.

How do you photograph a shipwreck for a 3D model?
Plan a camera route that records the wreck from multiple distances and angles, with photographs overlapping across each pass. NOAA’s general guidance calls for hundreds or thousands of still images from the top, sides and inside of a structure; the right number depends on the site and how completely it can be covered, rather than on a universal minimum.
Plan for coverage before the dive
Map out a sequence of slow circuits around the wreck at several heights, followed by gridded passes over its top. This combines broad views of the structure with closer, systematic coverage. The goal is to photograph every accessible area from more than one angle and distance so matching details recur between images.
Think of the route as a coverage problem, not a photo-count target. A large collection of frames can still leave gaps if they all show the same face or were taken from nearly identical positions. Conversely, the needed image count changes with the wreck’s size, complexity, visibility and accessibility; the cited NOAA guidance gives a broad range, not a per-wreck calculation.

Keep the camera path steady
Move slowly and steadily, point the camera forward or downward, and avoid panning. Motion blur makes small features harder to match, while erratic movement can leave the software without enough consistent views to align a sequence. Maintain overlap between passes so that recognizable details appear in neighboring photographs.
Lighting and depth of field also matter. Navy guidance recommends enough of both to record useful detail and advises removing on-screen ROV overlays that could confuse feature matching. Scale bars placed around the site provide a reference for measuring the model. These are practical capture controls: they help make the images easier to interpret and the reconstruction more useful.

Choose access and camera coverage for the site
Divers and ROVs can both collect imagery. A diver can move around the structure to capture different views; an ROV can be maneuvered along planned passes and may be a better fit where a human cannot safely or practically obtain the required coverage. Neither approach guarantees a complete reconstruction: visibility, obstructions, currents and maneuvering constraints still determine which surfaces can be photographed.
For complex sites, a multi-camera system can increase field of view and coverage. One example is the M/S Helma case study, which used seven optical sensors and a structure-from-motion pipeline to create georeferenced models of a wreck at 55 m. That is a documented case, not a general requirement that wreck surveys use seven cameras or operate at that depth.

Processing turns the image set into geometry in stages. The software must first find common visual details among photographs, then use their changing viewpoints to estimate spatial relationships. The resulting geometry can be surfaced and textured only after the images have been aligned well enough to support it.
- Improve the images where possible. Correct color balance and exposure to make recorded details easier to interpret. A 2024 shipwreck-processing paper reports that underwater image enhancement can improve visual interpretation and photorealism, particularly when haze reduces contrast.
- Align the photographs. The software searches for repeated visual features in different frames and uses them to estimate how the images relate to one another. If frames are blurred, poorly lit, or show too little shared detail, reliable matching becomes harder.
- Build a sparse point cloud. Initial matched features provide a first, relatively limited estimate of the wreck’s geometry and image positions.
- Generate a dense point cloud. Additional image information fills in more of the visible surfaces. This more detailed set of points is the basis for the next geometric step.
- Create a surface mesh. The software interpolates a surface through the dense points, turning the point-based representation into a connected 3D form.
- Apply the image texture. Pixels from the original photographs are projected onto the mesh to give it color and visible surface detail.
Each stage depends on the one before it. Image enhancement may make details clearer, but it cannot supply a view of a surface that was never photographed. A dense point cloud cannot repair a fundamentally missing side of a wreck, and a convincing texture does not by itself prove that the model is correctly scaled.
What makes a model measurable rather than merely visual?
A textured mesh can look convincing while lacking a dependable relationship to real-world size or position. Scale bars or other reference features placed around the site help establish that relationship. When a workflow also ties the model to geographic references, it can be georeferenced, as in the M/S Helma case study.

That distinction matters when the purpose is measurement, comparison over time or planning work at the site. A visually useful model supports interpretation; a model with suitable scale or geographic control can also serve as a more measurable record. Whether a particular model has those controls should be established from its capture and processing workflow, not inferred from how realistic its texture looks.

Use the intended output to guide decisions before capture. A model intended mainly for public interpretation has different priorities from one intended for measuring features, tracking change or planning excavation. In every case, overlapping coverage and image quality are foundational, but scale and georeferencing controls become especially important when measurements or comparisons are expected.
How accurate are underwater shipwreck models?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every underwater photogrammetry model. Results depend on image acquisition, reference placement and scaling, visibility, coverage and the specific processing workflow. A precision value from one site should not be presented as a guaranteed result for another.
A 2024 underwater co-registration study reported mean precision of 1.37 ± 16.55 mm in a coral-reef workflow. In that study, image acquisition accounted for 37% of total error, while reference and scaling-feature placement accounted for 53%. Those numbers describe that study’s reef workflow; they are not a shipwreck accuracy specification or a promise about any individual model.
The findings do underline why field capture and scale references deserve attention. If image acquisition contributes materially to error, careful photography is part of measurement quality, not just visual polish. If reference placement and scaling features contribute substantially, adding a scale reference is not enough on its own: its placement within the workflow matters too.

Why can underwater photogrammetry miss or distort parts of a wreck?
Water absorbs and scatters light, contributing to haze, color loss and changing visibility. Those conditions can reduce contrast and make it harder for the software to recognize repeated details. Turbidity can also limit how far the camera can see, so nearby photographs may not capture enough clear shared structure.
Other constraints affect what gets recorded. Currents can make a stable camera path harder to maintain; occlusion can hide surfaces behind other parts of the wreck; diver time can limit coverage; and ROV maneuvering can restrict the angles a vehicle can reach. These are different sources of incomplete or less dependable input, so a visually incomplete model should be assessed against the site and capture conditions rather than treated as a software problem alone.
- Gaps in the model: Check whether the corresponding surfaces were actually visible in overlapping images. Unphotographed or occluded areas cannot be reconstructed from the visible sides alone.
- Weak image alignment: Review whether frames are sharp, adequately lit and rich in details that recur across multiple views. Overlays on ROV footage may also interfere with feature matching, according to Navy guidance.
- Low contrast or washed-out color: Haze can reduce contrast, and water can remove color. Image enhancement may improve visual interpretation and photorealism, but should not be confused with adding missing physical evidence.
- Uncertain dimensions: Confirm that scale bars or other references were recorded and used appropriately. A realistic-looking surface does not establish its scale.
What are underwater shipwreck models used for?
A model preserves a detailed snapshot of a site that may change as corrosion, salinity, erosion, currents and human disturbance act on it. NOAA describes models as a way to support remote, noninvasive access, help reveal features missed during an initial visit, inform future excavation planning and monitor a site over time.
These uses depend on the model’s coverage and controls. Remote examination is useful for the recorded surfaces; change monitoring requires records that can be compared meaningfully; excavation planning benefits from a view of the site but does not make the model a substitute for evidence that was never captured. A textured model can also support public interpretation by giving viewers a way to inspect a wreck without visiting it.

What equipment and workflow choices matter most?
The best setup depends on access, water conditions and the model’s purpose. A camera mounted in an underwater housing is one documented approach in NOAA archaeological photography guidance. The available data does not establish particular camera models, housing depth ratings, software requirements, costs or processing times, so those should be checked against the actual equipment and project rather than assumed.
| Choice | What it changes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Diver or ROV | How the camera reaches different sides, heights and enclosed areas | Access, diver time, current conditions, obstructions and ROV maneuvering |
| Still photographs or video-derived frames | How image coverage is collected and selected for processing | The available guidance specifies still photographs; it does not establish a universal video-frame workflow or its performance. |
| Single or multiple cameras | Field of view and potential coverage | Multi-camera ROV systems can increase coverage; the seven-sensor Helma example is a case study, not a baseline specification. |
| Visual model or measurable record | Whether the output is primarily for interpretation or also intended for measurement and comparison | Use scale bars or suitable reference controls when scale matters; geographic referencing may be appropriate for site-level work. |
| Standard or enhanced imagery | How clearly low-contrast underwater details appear | Enhancement may help with haze-related contrast, but does not replace missing coverage or scale references. |
The practical priority is to make capture choices serve the outcome. Plan routes for complete overlap, choose access that can reach the necessary views, provide sufficient lighting and depth of field, and include measurement references when dimensions matter. Processing starts with the photographs; decisions made underwater shape what the software can produce afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a photogrammetry texture show a wreck’s original colors?
No. The texture projects colors recorded in the photographs, and underwater light absorption can cause color loss. It represents the captured appearance under the survey conditions, not necessarily the wreck’s color in a different environment or at another time.
Can photogrammetry replace an archaeological visit to a wreck?
No. A model can support remote inspection and planning, but it only represents visible surfaces recorded in the images. It cannot independently establish details hidden from the camera or answer every question that might require on-site investigation.
Can video be used instead of taking still photos?
The cited NOAA guidance describes collecting still images, while the comparison material identifies video-derived frames as a workflow consideration. It does not establish when video is equivalent to still photography, so project teams should not assume that any video will provide suitable model inputs.
Does a 3D model show what has changed since an earlier survey?
A single model is a snapshot, not a change record by itself. Monitoring requires records from different times that can be compared meaningfully, with enough coverage and reference control for the intended comparison.
