An AI agent can access only what the operating system and its execution environment allow the agent’s process to access. In practice, that means the answer depends on the agent runtime, the OS sandbox mechanism, filesystem permissions, network policy, mounted data, credentials, and any approval system around the process. A sandbox can block reads, writes, network connections, or interactions with other processes, but it is not a guarantee that the model is invulnerable or that every component in an agent workflow is isolated.

The most reliable way to judge an agent’s reach is to identify the exact process that executes commands, then inspect its enforced filesystem boundary, network egress rules, credentials, and host privileges. A directory called workspace is not, by itself, a security boundary.

What does OS-level sandboxing mean for an AI agent?

OS-level sandboxing places an enforced access boundary around the process that runs an agent’s commands or tools. The operating system mediates requests for files, network connections, hardware, and other processes instead of relying only on the application’s code to behave.

Apple describes macOS App Sandbox as “an access control technology that macOS provides and enforces at the kernel level.” A sandboxed app declares capabilities through entitlements, and macOS blocks operations outside the granted capabilities unless another operating-system permission or a user-selected exception applies.

For an AI agent, the sandboxed subject may be a shell, code interpreter, tool runner, browser process, or an entire execution environment. The language model itself may run elsewhere; what matters is the boundary around the process that actually performs the requested action.

Sandboxing is a limit, not a promise of safety

Apple explicitly says that App Sandbox does not prevent attacks against an application. Instead, it reduces the harm a successful attack can cause by restricting the application’s privileges. The same distinction applies to agents: a sandbox can reduce the consequences of a compromised tool or malicious instruction, but it does not prove that the model, runtime, dependencies, or surrounding services are bug-free.

Which files can an AI agent read or write?

An agent can normally read or write only the paths exposed to its process by the sandbox and the underlying operating-system permissions. The practical boundary is the intersection of sandbox policy, mounts, entitlements, user approvals, POSIX permissions, ACLs, and platform protections.

macOS App Sandbox as a concrete example

A macOS sandboxed app has read/write access to its own container. Access to common folders, user-selected files, or another application’s container requires the relevant entitlement, a user-granted selection, or another operating-system authorization. Full Disk Access is a separate permission that the user grants in System Settings; being sandboxed does not automatically grant it.

Even when an entitlement appears to allow an operation, the operation can still fail because of ordinary Unix permissions, ACLs, System Integrity Protection, or data-protection rules. “The sandbox permits this path” and “the read or write succeeds” are therefore different questions.

Product defaults are narrower than the general OS model

Current Codex local security guidance describes default writes as limited to the active workspace, with approval required for some actions outside that boundary. That is a product configuration, not a property shared by every AI agent or operating system. A different launcher, policy file, IDE integration, or elevated account can produce a different result.

Why a workspace folder is not enough

The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation says its Unix-local Linux backend adds no OS-level confinement. Setting a working directory, HOME, or current directory changes where a command starts, but does not stop a process from opening other host paths that its user account can reach. Real confinement requires an enforcement mechanism such as an OS sandbox, container boundary with appropriate controls, virtual machine, or another outer isolation layer.

Can an AI agent access the internet from inside a sandbox?

Network access is a separate control from filesystem access. An agent may be unable to read a host file yet still be able to connect to arbitrary internet destinations, or it may have broad file access while having no network route at all.

Codex local guidance describes network access as off by default. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance recommends allowing outbound traffic only to approved endpoints and documenting which process makes each connection. This matters because tool connections can originate from different locations: an executor-side connection runs in the execution environment, while a remote service connection runs from that remote service’s environment.

Questions to answer for network policy

  • Is there a default-deny rule, or can the process open arbitrary outbound connections?
  • Which domains, IP ranges, ports, and protocols are allowlisted?
  • Does DNS resolution happen inside the sandbox or through a host service?
  • Can a tool upload files, post secrets, or receive instructions from an external server?
  • Are credentials for external services available to the model-directed process?

A statement such as “the agent is sandboxed” is incomplete unless it specifies network egress. File isolation does not automatically prevent data exfiltration over an allowed connection.

What else can OS-level sandboxes restrict?

Depending on the platform and policy, a sandbox can mediate hardware access, inter-process communication, device files, app data, ports, and system administration operations in addition to ordinary files and sockets.

Apple’s App Sandbox documentation gives macOS-specific examples of activities that are incompatible with the sandbox, including sending Apple Events to arbitrary applications, loading kernel extensions, configuring network settings, and terminating other running apps. These examples illustrate the kind of capability an OS can deny; they should not be treated as a universal list for Linux, Windows, containers, or hosted agent services.

When evaluating an agent, identify whether it can spawn child processes, inspect process lists, signal other processes, bind listening ports, access devices, or invoke privileged helpers. A tool may be sandboxed while a separate helper, plugin, or host service is not.

Are all “agent sandboxes” equally isolated?

No. “Sandbox” is a product label, not a uniform technical level. Two environments can both use that word while providing very different guarantees.

Environment or control What it can establish What it does not establish
OS-enforced sandbox The operating system mediates specified resources for a process. That every agent component is inside the same boundary or that the application has no vulnerabilities.
Application approval prompt A user or policy can review selected actions before they occur. Automatic confinement if an already-approved action is overly broad or a different code path is used.
Workspace or current directory Where commands begin and where relative paths resolve. Restriction against absolute paths, parent directories, or other host resources when no OS policy exists.
Hosted isolated compute A provider-defined execution environment with specified files, packages, ports, and external access. That the control plane, credentials, remote tools, or mounted data share the same isolation boundary.
Unix-local SDK backend without confinement Local command execution using the host’s normal process model. Any OS-level restriction beyond the host account and its existing permissions.

OpenAI’s sandbox agent documentation describes one particular isolated Unix-like environment with files, commands, packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots, and controlled external access. Those characteristics describe that offering and should not be generalized to every runtime called a sandbox.

How do the agent’s components affect the security boundary?

An agent workflow commonly has more than one security domain. A model-facing executor may run commands in a sandbox, while an orchestration service handles authentication, approvals, audit logs, tool routing, and billing elsewhere.

OpenAI’s architecture guidance recommends keeping orchestration, authentication, audit, and human review in a trusted harness while the sandbox handles model-directed execution. This separation limits the value of a compromised execution environment, but it remains a design recommendation rather than a guarantee.

Trace each operation to its actual process

  1. Identify the process that interprets the model’s command or tool call.
  2. Record the OS account, container, virtual machine, or hosted worker in which it runs.
  3. List every mounted directory, injected file, environment variable, socket, and device.
  4. Determine whether a helper process performs privileged work on its behalf.
  5. Map every network connection to the component that opens it and the destinations it can reach.
  6. Check where authentication tokens and other secrets are stored and whether the model-directed process can read them.

This tracing often reveals that a “sandboxed agent” is actually a chain of processes with different boundaries.

What does sandboxing not prove about an AI agent?

Sandboxing does not prove that the model cannot be manipulated, that dependencies are trustworthy, or that a vulnerability cannot produce an escape. It also does not prove that a local mode is confined: the Linux Unix-local Agents SDK backend is an explicit example of local execution without OS-level confinement.

  • No universal isolation: A harness, executor, credential store, remote tool, and sandboxed process may run in separate environments with separate policies.
  • No automatic secret protection: A token placed in an environment variable or mounted file is available to any process that can read it.
  • No guaranteed network privacy: An allowed connection can still transmit data outside the intended organization.
  • No quantified risk reduction: The official documentation describes mechanisms and recommendations, but it does not publish a comparable rate of prevented incidents or sandbox escapes for these configurations.
  • No portability assumption: A policy that confines a macOS app does not automatically apply to a Linux local runner or a hosted worker.

Filesystem scope

  • Which paths are readable?
  • Which paths are writable?
  • Which directories are mounted from the host?
  • Is access outside the workspace enforced by the OS or merely discouraged by convention?
  • Can the process create symlinks, device files, or child processes that change the effective reach?

Network egress

  • Is network access disabled by default?
  • Can destinations be allowlisted by domain, address, port, or protocol?
  • Which executor or remote service originates the connection?
  • Can the process accept inbound connections or expose a port?

Credentials and control-plane separation

  • Are credentials retained in a trusted service, or injected into model-directed compute?
  • Can the executor read approval tokens, audit credentials, or production keys?
  • Are high-impact actions mediated by a separate service that validates the request?

Enforcement and platform

  • Which OS-level mechanism, container policy, virtual machine, or hosted boundary is active?
  • Does the selected local backend actually apply confinement on that operating system?
  • Are user approvals additive controls, or are they being mistaken for isolation?

Operational compatibility

  • Which packages, interpreters, ports, mounted datasets, and host features must work?
  • Do those requirements force broader permissions than the original design allowed?
  • What is the failure behavior when a required capability is denied?

How can you verify what an agent can access before deployment?

Verification should test the deployed configuration, not just read a product description. Use a non-production account and harmless test data.

  1. Inventory the boundary: Document the runtime, OS, account, mounts, entitlements, environment variables, network routes, and helper services.
  2. Test filesystem cases: Attempt an allowed workspace read, a workspace write, a read outside the workspace, a write outside it, and access to another user’s or application’s data. Record whether the OS denies the operation, a policy layer asks for approval, or the operation succeeds.
  3. Test network cases: Try an approved endpoint, an unapproved endpoint, a blocked port, and an inbound connection. Verify which component generated each request.
  4. Test process capabilities: Check whether the agent can enumerate, signal, or terminate unrelated processes; bind ports; access devices; or invoke administrative helpers.
  5. Test secret exposure: Place a canary value in each intended credential location and confirm that model-directed commands cannot read values reserved for the trusted harness.
  6. Test recovery: Revoke a mount, deny an approval, disable network access, and terminate the worker. Confirm that the agent fails closed and that logs identify the denied action.
  7. Re-test after changes: New plugins, packages, mounts, entitlements, IDE integrations, or backend selections can change the effective boundary.

Keep the results with the deployment record. A sandbox policy is only useful if operators know which version and configuration produced the observed behavior.

What is the practical bottom line for users?

Ask three questions before trusting an AI agent with data: Which process runs the action? Which paths and destinations can that process reach? Where are credentials and approval functions located? An OS-level sandbox can enforce meaningful limits on files, network, hardware, and other processes, but its protection is specific to the mechanism and configuration actually in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the narrowest filesystem mounts, default-deny network rules, least-privilege credentials, and a separate trusted harness for authentication, approvals, and audit. Treat workspace names, prompts, and product labels as descriptive until an operating-system or outer isolation boundary enforces them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent read files that are open in another application?

Sometimes, but only if the executing process has a permitted path or an approved inter-process capability. On macOS, access to another app’s data can be blocked by App Sandbox entitlements, user consent, and additional operating-system protections; an agent with broader host permissions may still be able to read the underlying file.

Do user approval prompts replace an OS sandbox?

No. An approval prompt is a decision point for selected actions, while an OS sandbox is an enforced boundary applied to process operations. Prompts can reduce accidental changes, but they do not confine an unapproved code path, a compromised helper, or a process that already has excessive permissions.

What happens to an agent’s unsaved work when its sandbox is destroyed?

Data inside ephemeral compute can disappear when the worker is terminated unless it was copied to an approved persistent store or snapshot. Persistence, backup, and retention are separate controls from access isolation and should be specified explicitly for each deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a sandbox stop prompt injection from changing an agent’s behavior?

No. Prompt injection targets the agent’s instructions and decision-making, whereas sandboxing limits what the resulting process can do. Combining constrained tools, least-privilege credentials, network allowlists, and review of high-impact actions limits the damage if the agent follows hostile instructions.
