Open-ear AI glasses put miniature speakers in the temple arms and aim sound toward your ear canals without sealing your ears. That lets you hear music, calls, navigation, translations and the surrounding room at the same time. The trade-off is acoustic leakage: someone nearby may hear parts of the output, particularly when the volume is high, the room is quiet, the listener is close, or the frame sits away from the ears.
Directional placement, acoustic cancellation and privacy modes can reduce leakage, but no open-ear design guarantees confidential listening. Treat sensitive calls and private notifications as potentially audible to people around you.
What is open-ear audio in AI glasses?
Open-ear audio is a speaker arrangement that leaves the ear canal uncovered. Instead of placing a sealed earbud inside the canal, the glasses mount micro-speakers in their arms and direct sound from above or slightly forward of the ears. Analog Devices engineer Ryan Boyle describes open-ear products as devices that “don’t block or cover the ears.”
Because there is no ear-tip seal, outside sound remains available. You can hear traffic, coworkers, doorbells and public announcements while audio is playing. The same open path also means some of the speaker’s acoustic energy travels into the room rather than only into your ear.

This is different from bone-conduction glasses. Open-ear AI glasses use airborne sound from tiny drivers; they do not rely on vibrating your skull. The practical result is closer to a very small, near-ear loudspeaker than to an in-ear monitor.
How do speakers in the temple arms direct sound?
The drivers sit close to the ear canal, usually above and slightly behind the ear. Their position gives the wearer a short acoustic path while leaving the pinna and canal open to ambient sound.
Directional air conduction
HTC says its VIVE Eagle uses directional air conduction. In its explanation, a forward pressure wave reaches the wearer first, while a shaped rear wave is used for acoustic dipole cancellation in the surrounding field. That description applies to HTC’s implementation; it is not a guarantee that every AI-glasses model achieves the same reduction.

Why an open path changes the sound
A sealed earbud traps more of the driver’s energy and creates a strong low-frequency seal. Open-ear glasses cannot do that. Bass is generally lighter and immersion is weaker than with sealed earbuds, while speech, calls, podcasts, navigation prompts and translation remain well suited to the format.
Why fit is part of the acoustic system
The closer the driver sits to your ear, the more of its output reaches you directly. If a frame is too wide, slips down, or leaves a large gap behind the ear, you may raise the volume to compensate. That increases the chance that other people hear it.
Can people hear what AI glasses are playing?
Yes. Leakage is a normal physical possibility with any open-ear design, not proof that a pair is defective. A nearby person is most likely to notice the output when several conditions coincide:
- High volume: more acoustic energy is available to escape into the room.
- Quiet surroundings: there is less ambient sound to mask the glasses.
- Short distance: someone sitting or standing close to you receives more of the remaining sound.
- Poor fit: a gap between the driver and ear reduces direct delivery to you and makes compensation by higher volume more likely.
- Content with prominent music or bass: broad, sustained sounds are easier to notice than a brief prompt.
The wearer may perceive the audio as private because it is much louder at the ear than in the room. That perception should not be treated as confidentiality, especially for names, account details, medical information or business discussions.

How much sound can leak from open-ear glasses?
There is no single leakage number for the entire category. Driver design, frame geometry, fit, volume, audio content and room acoustics all change the result.
HTC’s newsroom reports an NTT test in which music played at 80 dB measured 43 dB at a distance of 15 cm. This is a vendor-reported, model- or technology-specific result from 2026, not a universal performance promise.
| Measurement | Reported value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Music level at the glasses | 80 dB | The level used in the reported test |
| Level measured 15 cm away | 43 dB | Vendor-reported NTT result for the described implementation |
| Applies to every AI-glasses model? | No | Do not generalize this figure to other frames, volumes or listening conditions |
The Xiaomi Mijia review reports clearly audible leakage in quiet environments. It also says the glasses’ privacy mode reduces leakage but does not eliminate it. A “privacy” setting should therefore be understood as mitigation, not a promise that a person beside you cannot hear.
What can you hear while wearing open-ear AI glasses?
The main benefit is simultaneous awareness. Audio does not close off the ear, so you can monitor your environment without removing the glasses.

Situations where open-ear audio helps
- Walking or cycling while remaining aware of traffic and nearby voices.
- Hearing a colleague, doorbell or station announcement while a podcast is playing.
- Following turn-by-turn navigation without covering an ear.
- Listening to translation prompts while retaining awareness of the original conversation.
- Taking calls or speaking to a voice assistant without the plugged-ear sensation of an in-ear bud.
Situations where it is weaker
- Quiet, bass-heavy music listening when you want deep low-end impact.
- Very noisy streets or vehicles, where outside sound competes with the speakers.
- Private conversations, because the open design cannot guarantee that words stay inaudible to others.
In a noisy place, increasing the volume may make speech easier for you to understand, but it also increases leakage. Open-ear audio is an awareness trade-off, not a way to obtain both sealed-ear isolation and complete privacy.
Are open-ear AI glasses private in an office?
They can be discreet for low-volume prompts in a normal office, but you should not assume that a nearby coworker cannot hear them. Open-plan rooms are often quiet enough for leakage to be noticed, and people may sit within the 15-centimeter range used in the reported test or even closer.
A practical privacy rule
Use open-ear glasses for information you would be comfortable saying aloud to someone nearby. For passwords, financial details, health information, legal matters or confidential work, switch to a genuinely private channel or postpone the message.

How to reduce the chance of being overheard
- Lower the volume until speech remains intelligible but is not louder than necessary.
- Position the frame so each driver sits close to its intended ear location.
- Use the manufacturer’s privacy or leakage-reduction mode when available.
- Move away from the nearest person or choose a busier location with more masking sound when appropriate.
- For a sensitive call, use a sealed headset or the phone’s private earpiece instead.
These steps reduce exposure; none changes the fact that the speakers are open to the room.

Can you hear traffic while using AI glasses?
Yes. Preserving ambient sound is the defining advantage of the design. Since the ear canal is uncovered, traffic, cyclists, coworkers and announcements remain audible while the glasses play audio.
Ambient awareness is not the same as perfect situational awareness. Loud music, a noisy street or a poor frame fit can mask environmental cues. Keep the volume moderate and do not assume that hearing some room sound means every hazard will be detected.
Are open-ear glasses better than earbuds for calls?
They can be more comfortable for people who dislike ear-canal pressure and can make natural conversation easier because the ears are not blocked. Calls, podcasts, navigation and spoken prompts are strong use cases.
Sealed earbuds generally have an advantage for bass, immersion and isolation. Open-ear glasses also expose call audio to nearby listeners. Compare the two formats according to the situation rather than treating one as universally better.
| Need | Open-ear AI glasses | Sealed earbuds |
|---|---|---|
| Hear the room simultaneously | Strong advantage | Usually reduced by the seal and isolation |
| Ear-canal comfort | No ear tip or plugged sensation | Depends on tip size and fit |
| Speech, calls and prompts | Well suited | Well suited |
| Bass and immersion | Generally weaker without a seal | Generally stronger with a seal |
| Resistance to being overheard | Cannot guarantee privacy | Usually less audible outside the ear, depending on fit and volume |
What should you compare when choosing open-ear AI glasses?
Sound leakage is only one part of the decision. The following checks reveal whether a frame fits your use rather than merely sounding impressive in a product description.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Leakage control | Is there a documented test, directional design or privacy mode? Under what volume and distance? |
| Ambient awareness | Can you still hear speech, traffic and announcements at your normal listening level? |
| Speech and bass | Are calls and prompts clear, and is the bass acceptable without a sealed ear? |
| Fit | Do the drivers stay close to your ears, and can the frame be adjusted or fitted with prescription lenses? |
| Microphones and wind handling | Are calls and voice commands usable outdoors, or does wind overwhelm speech? |
| Battery and charging | How long does continuous playback last, and how does charging fit your routine? |
| Water and dust protection | What protection rating is specified for sweat, rain and dust? |
| Assistant and translation features | Which assistant, languages and phone platforms are supported? |
| Prescription compatibility | Can an optician fit the required lenses without moving the speakers away from your ears? |
Ask for test conditions when a maker quotes leakage or battery figures. A result measured at one distance and volume does not predict performance in every room or on every head.

What does the HTC VIVE Eagle example show?
HTC’s official VIVE Eagle page lists open-ear speakers, spatial sound and tuning intended to minimize leakage. It gives a starting weight of 48.5 grams, up to 4.5 hours of continuous music playback and more than 36 hours of standby. Those are manufacturer specifications, so actual runtime depends on use and settings.
The page also describes Listening Mode, which translates selected languages through the open-ear speakers. Translation is therefore an example of a feature that benefits from keeping the ear open: you can hear the translated output while still hearing the conversation and surroundings.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese specifications illustrate what to record when comparing models, not a category-wide baseline. Another frame may weigh more or less, last longer or shorter, and use a different approach to leakage reduction.
How can you test leakage on your own pair?
A simple home check cannot replace a standardized laboratory measurement, but it can reveal whether your normal settings are appropriate for a shared space.
- Play ordinary speech or a podcast at the volume you normally use.
- Ask a trusted person to stand at the distance where a coworker or passenger would sit.
- Have that person report whether words are understandable, merely recognizable as sound, or inaudible.
- Repeat the check in a quiet room and then with normal background noise.
- Adjust the frame so the drivers sit close to your ears, repeat at a lower volume, and test any privacy mode.
- Use the result to set a personal rule for calls and notifications; do not use the test to claim that the glasses are private for everyone.
Test speech as well as music. A listener may fail to identify a song but still catch names or short phrases from a call.

The sound is too quiet
First check frame position and clean, unobstructed speaker openings. If the frame sits far from your ears, reposition it before raising the volume. In a noisy environment, some competition from ambient sound is inherent to the open design.

Lower the volume, move the frame closer to the ears and enable the available privacy or leakage-reduction setting. If private information is involved, stop using open-ear playback for that content rather than relying on a setting to eliminate leakage.

Bass sounds thin
That is an expected limitation of the missing ear seal. Try content where speech clarity matters more, or use sealed earbuds when low-frequency impact and immersion are the priority.
Calls are difficult outside
Wind and environmental noise can compete with both the speakers and microphones. Compare performance at the location where you will actually take calls, and keep a private, sealed option available for important conversations.
What is the bottom line on open-ear audio in AI glasses?
Open-ear glasses work by placing near-ear speakers in the frame arms, allowing the wearer to hear digital audio and the environment together. That makes them useful for calls, speech, navigation and translation, but the open path also permits leakage. Volume, distance, room noise and fit determine how noticeable it becomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do open-ear AI glasses work with prescription lenses?
Compatibility varies by frame and lens-fitting program. Before buying, confirm that prescription lenses can be installed without changing the distance between each speaker and your ear, because that gap affects both volume and leakage.
Does a privacy mode make open-ear glasses safe for confidential calls?
No. A privacy mode may reduce audible leakage, as reported for the Xiaomi Mijia glasses, but it does not make an open speaker acoustically sealed. Use a private earpiece or sealed headset for sensitive conversations.
Why can I hear my surroundings but still miss a nearby voice?
Ambient awareness is affected by relative volume and frequency. A loud podcast or noisy street can mask a person speaking beside you even though the ear canal is uncovered; lower the playback level when environmental speech matters.
How close is too close for someone sitting beside me?
There is no universal cutoff because volume, content and frame fit vary. The reported NTT measurement used 15 centimeters, so assume a person at conversational distance may hear at least some output and test your own pair at that distance.
