For a delivery-only estimate, divide the annual membership fee by the delivery charge you would actually avoid on each eligible order. Using an illustrative $139 annual fee and a hypothetical $7 avoided charge, the break-even point is about 20 eligible orders a year—but your own shipping costs may produce a very different result.
Calculate your delivery-only break-even point
Use this formula:
Break-even eligible orders per year = annual Prime fee ÷ average delivery charge avoided per eligible order

The result is an estimate, not a universal order target. Count only orders for which you would otherwise pay a delivery charge and for which Prime actually removes that charge. If you usually qualify for free shipping without Prime, that order does not represent an avoided delivery cost.
Example: about 20 orders a year
Amazon Pay’s page, which is several years old, gives a U.S. price of $139 per year or $14.99 per month. At the $139 annual figure, if you would otherwise pay an average of $7 for delivery on each eligible order, the calculation is $139 ÷ $7 = 19.9—roughly 20 orders a year. The $7 is a hypothetical input, not an Amazon-published shipping rate. See Amazon Pay’s comparison of Amazon Pay and Prime, and check Amazon’s live membership page for current prices and plan terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Use the monthly version if you pay monthly
Divide the monthly membership fee by the average delivery charges you would avoid in a month. At the same dated Amazon Pay figures, 12 payments of $14.99 total $179.88—more than the listed $139 annual price. Compare the current prices for the plan and billing option you would actually choose; do not use the annual fee to judge a monthly subscription without accounting for its full-year cost.
Use your own shipping costs, not a standard rate
The important input is what you would really pay without Prime, not a single assumed shipping fee. The available sources do not establish a current universal standard-shipping charge for non-Prime U.S. orders. Charges and eligibility can depend on order contents, destination, and delivery choice, so use the amounts you encounter when deciding whether to place orders without Prime.

A practical estimate can be built from a representative period of shopping:
- List orders for which you would have chosen paid delivery without Prime.
- Record the delivery charge you would actually have paid for each of those orders.
- Find the average charge across those eligible orders.
- Divide the Prime fee for your billing plan by that average. If your average is zero, delivery savings alone do not cover the fee.
For example, if your actual average avoided delivery charge is higher than $7, fewer eligible orders would be needed to reach the same fee; if it is lower, more would be needed. Do not count orders where you would have selected a free alternative or where Prime does not waive the relevant charge.

Check that the delivery benefit applies to your order
Prime delivery terms are not identical for every location, item, or delivery option. Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery, for example, is limited to select U.S. metro areas and requires an eligible residential address and eligible items. A minimum purchase threshold may apply; Amazon says it varies by location and is displayed in the cart. See Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery eligibility information and its Same-Day Delivery rates information.
That example is a reminder to check the actual checkout details. Do not treat every order as one saved shipping charge, or assume a delivery option is available at every address.

Decide whether other Prime benefits change the result
The formula above measures delivery savings only. Amazon also describes entertainment and other membership benefits, but their value to a household depends on whether its members use them and would otherwise pay for something comparable. Count a benefit only at the amount it genuinely replaces in your budget—not at an advertised or standalone value you would not otherwise spend.
If those benefits matter to you, compare the membership fee with your delivery savings plus the value you personally assign to benefits you use. Keep that broader calculation separate from the delivery-only order count so it is clear what is making Prime worthwhile.
