Observation Coach is an AI project designed to make you stop looking at your phone. You choose a short session, put the device away, observe your surroundings, and later describe one detail you noticed. The system then asks a follow-up question and assigns a next exercise based on your response. Its success condition is unusual: you should need the AI less over time, not spend longer chatting with it.
Created by Rittik Chakraborty for Hacktoberfest 2026’s “Touch Grass” week, the project is presented as an implementation and design experiment rather than a clinically validated training program. It has a live preview and open-source repository, but no published user totals, retention figures, controlled learning results, pricing, or independent evaluation.
What is Observation Coach, and why is it different from a normal AI app?
Observation Coach is a guided practice tool for paying attention to the physical environment. Instead of identifying objects through a camera or generating an endless stream of activities, it asks the user to look away from the screen, notice something personally, and return with a short description.
That makes it closer to a coach than an answer engine. If you report a basic observation, the intended behavior is not to replace it with a sophisticated interpretation. The AI should help you examine your own detail more closely, perhaps by asking what changed, what you can compare, or what evidence supports an inference.

The project was submitted in the Best Use of MongoDB Atlas category of Hacktoberfest 2026’s Touch Grass week. The author’s stated goal is deliberately counter to engagement-driven software: “The goal isn’t to make people spend more time with AI. It’s to make them need AI less.”

Leave the interface and inspect your surroundings directly. The project does not require you to point a camera at objects or keep the app open while you observe.

When the timer ends, return and write a reflection about a real detail from the session. The description is the raw material for the next coaching prompt, so an ordinary observation is acceptable.

Answer an AI follow-up question
The model generates a thoughtful question based on your description. A useful follow-up may encourage comparison, attention to change, sensory detail, or a carefully supported inference rather than supplying an answer for you.

Receive an adaptive next exercise
The progression system chooses what to practise next. Your next prompt is intended to respond to the skill reflected in your previous description instead of giving every user the same generic challenge.
This loop separates the offline observation period from the on-screen reflection. The screen is used to set a boundary and provide feedback, not to mediate everything you see.
What observation skills does the coach try to build?
The project describes six related abilities. They are not presented as test scores; they are the dimensions used to shape prompts and exercises.
- Attention: noticing a specific feature instead of recording a vague impression.
- Description: putting sensory or visual details into precise words.
- Comparison: identifying how two objects, places, or moments differ.
- Change: detecting movement, deterioration, growth, light shifts, or other differences over time.
- Inference: forming a conclusion while distinguishing evidence from assumption.
- Deeper observation: returning to an initial detail and examining it from another angle.
A progression system can therefore move a user from “I saw a tree” toward questions such as what texture, pattern, sound, or change made that tree worth noticing. The intended progression is qualitative and adaptive; the project does not publish a standardized score or a validated skill scale.
Why does the app avoid camera recognition, endless challenges, and competition?
Those omissions are central to the product philosophy. Camera-based identification would let software perform the noticing on your behalf. Endless challenge generation could turn observation into another feed to consume, while leaderboards and competition could shift attention toward performance instead of the surroundings.
Observation Coach instead uses structured prompts, validated responses, and a short reflection loop. Validation means the application checks that the model returned the expected structured fields before using them. That protects the workflow from malformed output, but it does not prove that a question is insightful or that an exercise changes behavior.
Can Observation Coach work offline, and what happens to personal observations?
The author says a fully local installation can operate without an internet connection after setup. In that arrangement, the application, database, and open-weight language model run on the user’s machine, so personal observations can remain there. Local operation trades convenience for installation work and the computing resources needed to run an AI model.

The hosted option is described as a practical alternative when a computer cannot run the local model comfortably. The project does not publish a minimum RAM, GPU, latency target, or benchmark, so actual speed depends on the model quantization and the hardware or service configuration you choose. If you use hosted inference, treat the text you submit as data that must leave the local application for processing and review the provider’s terms before entering sensitive material.
What technology stack powers the project?
The front end uses Next.js App Router, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. MongoDB stores user accounts, sessions, saved observations, and progress. An AI-provider abstraction separates the coaching workflow from the inference backend, allowing the same application logic to work with a local llama.cpp model or a hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
The local model path uses Qwen 3B Instruct in GGUF format. The intended hosted path uses Qwen 27B Instruct through Groq. These model choices are implementation details, not evidence that one model is universally better for coaching. The abstraction is valuable because changing model configuration does not require rewriting the rest of the application.
A guided demo mode lets someone explore the session flow without a working AI API key. That is useful for understanding the interaction before configuring inference, but a demo should not be mistaken for an evaluation of the model’s coaching quality.
Can I run Observation Coach locally?
Yes, according to the project description, provided you install the application, configure its local database, and supply hardware capable of running the selected Qwen 3B GGUF model. The exact commands, operating-system support, quantization choice, and hardware requirements should be taken from the project’s current repository documentation rather than guessed from the framework names.
- Obtain the open-source project and read its setup instructions. Check the documented Node.js, database, and environment-variable requirements for the revision you intend to run.
- Choose an inference mode. Select the local llama.cpp route if keeping observations on the machine and working offline are priorities; select the hosted route if local model execution is impractical.
- Configure the database. The application uses MongoDB for accounts, sessions, saved observations, and progress, so the connection settings must point to the database instance described in the repository.
- Start with demo mode or a short session. A 5-minute exercise is a low-cost way to verify that the interface, response validation, and progression flow work before attempting longer sessions.
- Check where text is processed. In local mode, confirm that the model and database are running on the intended machine. In hosted mode, identify the endpoint and understand its retention and privacy policies.
The source material does not state a universal minimum specification. A 3B model generally demands less compute than a 27B model, but performance still varies with quantization, CPU, GPU, memory, and context length. Do not infer a guaranteed offline experience from the existence of a local model file alone; the full application and database also have to be installed correctly.
Which is better: local or hosted inference?
Neither route is categorically superior. The decision depends on whether privacy and offline control matter more to you than the convenience of delegating model execution.

- Choose local inference when observations may be sensitive, the machine has adequate resources, and you are willing to maintain the model and database.
- Choose hosted inference when you need simpler setup, stronger remote compute, or access from a machine that cannot run the local model reliably.
- Use the guided demo first when you want to understand the workflow before deciding whether either inference path is worth configuring.
The architecture makes this choice reversible: the provider abstraction is intended to let the coaching application use different model configurations without a complete rewrite. Switching providers does not, by itself, guarantee that previously saved observations migrate cleanly; check the repository’s data and environment instructions before changing deployments.
Does the project prove that AI can improve observation?
No. It documents a plausible practice design, not measured behavior change. The available project material does not report participant numbers, retention, controlled comparisons, validated attention measures, clinical outcomes, or independent testing.

Treat it as an experiment in habit formation rather than a therapeutic or educational intervention with established efficacy.
How should a first session be used?
Start with the 5-minute option and choose a place where small changes are visible: a window, hallway, park bench, or kitchen. Put the phone out of reach, look for one detail you would normally overlook, and remember enough specifics to describe it afterward.
When the app asks a follow-up question, answer from what you actually observed rather than inventing a more impressive story. If the next exercise feels repetitive, that may reflect the progression system practising a weak skill; if it feels too difficult, shorten the session and use a simpler subject. The project’s design favors honest, small observations over polished writing.

What makes this approach different from computer-vision and gamified nature apps?
Computer-vision tools answer “What is in front of the camera?” Gamified nature apps often reward collecting, identifying, or competing. Observation Coach asks a different question: “What did you notice, and what can you discover by looking again?”
That distinction explains both its appeal and its limits. The app can provide structure and adaptive prompts, but it cannot outsource the act of paying attention. Its unusual promise is philosophical as much as technical: use AI to create a reason to leave the screen, then let the physical world become the main interface.
