Nvidia’s strategy can lower the cost of training and serving AI models by increasing useful work per accelerator, but a newer GPU is not automatically cheaper. The relevant comparison is the cost of completing a training run or generating a set number of tokens—not just the GPU’s hourly price. Memory capacity, NVLink and network traffic, utilization, power, cooling, software, and system costs all affect the result.

For inference, Nvidia has published examples in which newer systems deliver much lower modeled cost per million tokens than older ones. Those are workload-specific benchmark figures, not universal cloud prices. For training, the supplied platform guidance points to different GPUs for frontier pre-training and fine-tuning, but does not establish a single percentage by which one option cuts cost.

How does Nvidia’s GPU strategy affect AI costs?

Nvidia sells more than individual accelerators. Its strategy combines successive GPU architectures with high-bandwidth memory (HBM), NVLink connections between GPUs, rack-scale systems, and software such as TensorRT-LLM and Dynamo. The economic aim is to make each system complete more useful training work or generate more tokens, so output rises faster than the costs of accelerators, electricity, cooling, and networking.

That distinction matters because an expensive accelerator can still have lower unit cost if it completes a job faster or serves more requests during the time it is running. Conversely, a high theoretical throughput number does not guarantee savings if a workload cannot keep the hardware busy, needs more memory than the GPU has, or spends substantial time communicating between GPUs.

For a buyer, the practical question is therefore not simply “Which GPU is fastest?” It is “Which complete configuration meets my quality and latency requirements at the lowest cost per completed training job, trained token, or generated token?”

Which Nvidia GPUs are suited to training, and why?

The appropriate GPU depends on the size and parallelism of the training job. Google Cloud’s accelerator guidance recommends its A4X Max (GB300), A4X (GB200), A4 (B200), A3 Ultra (H200), and A3 Mega (H100) options for frontier pre-training; it lists H100, A100, and RTX PRO options for fine-tuning.

Training need Options named in Google Cloud guidance Why it matters economically
Frontier pre-training A4X Max (GB300), A4X (GB200), A4 (B200), A3 Ultra (H200), A3 Mega (H100) Large runs need high Tensor Core throughput, substantial HBM capacity, and high NVLink bandwidth to limit synchronization delays across multiple GPUs and nodes.
Fine-tuning H100, A100, and RTX PRO options Fine-tuning may not need the same scale as frontier pre-training, so a smaller or less costly configuration can be a better fit. The guidance does not specify a universal best choice or cost.

The list is a set of cloud accelerator recommendations, not a claim that each option has identical capacity, price, or availability. A training plan should compare the actual instance configurations available to the buyer, including the number of GPUs, memory per GPU, and interconnect topology.

Why HBM and NVLink affect time-to-train

Model weights, activations, and other working data must fit in memory or be managed across devices. If a model can be held on fewer GPUs, the system may spend less time moving data between chips. The supplied guidance highlights very high NVLink bandwidth as a way to reduce multi-node synchronization latency in frontier training. That can improve time-to-train, but it does not mean communication overhead disappears.

Memory capacity can also change the shape of the job. If a configuration cannot fit the required workload on the available GPUs, it may need more devices or a different parallelization approach. More GPUs can raise total hourly spend and create more communication traffic. The right comparison is the completed job cost under the intended training setup—not memory capacity or throughput considered in isolation.

Is Blackwell cheaper than H100 for inference?

It can be cheaper per generated token in Nvidia’s published benchmark examples, even though the newer system has a higher stated hourly cost. But the benchmark numbers are model- and workload-dependent; they should not be treated as a general cloud quote or a guarantee for another serving stack.

Nvidia’s published comparison reports the following figures for H200 and GB300 NVL72:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reported measure H200 GB300 NVL72
Cost per GPU-hour $1.41 $2.65
Throughput per GPU 90 tokens per second 6,000 tokens per second
Throughput per megawatt 54,000 tokens per second 2.8 million tokens per second
Modeled cost per million tokens $4.20 $0.12

These are Nvidia-published benchmark figures, and the results depend on workload, software, utilization, and measurement assumptions. The hourly figure rises from H200 to GB300 NVL72, while the reported throughput and modeled token economics improve substantially. That is the intended point of a cost-per-token comparison: hourly expense alone can hide a large difference in output.

The figures should not be read as a direct price list for renting either product. A benchmark’s modeled cost per million tokens and a cloud provider’s bill are different measures. The latter can depend on the provider, region, instance configuration, reservation terms, and the fraction of time spent generating useful output.

Another Nvidia benchmark: H100 and B200

Nvidia’s H100 product page reports approximately $0.09 per million tokens for H100 and $0.02 per million tokens for B200 on GPT-OSS-120B. The page attributes these results to SemiAnalysis InferenceX benchmarks using specified vLLM/TensorRT-LLM configurations, as of April 2026. Treat them as a dated benchmark snapshot for that model and software setup, not as universal H100 or B200 prices.

This example and the H200/GB300 comparison should not be combined into one ranking or price curve. They concern different GPUs and reported benchmark setups. The available data does not establish that the workload, software settings, utilization, or measurement method match across the two comparisons.

Both statements are Nvidia claims, not independent findings that every customer will see those savings. “Up to” describes a maximum under the vendor’s stated comparison, not a typical result or a promise for an arbitrary model, latency target, or software stack. To use such a claim in a budget, a team would need to check that the compared workload and operating conditions resemble its own.

How do I calculate cost per million tokens?

For a simple steady-state estimate, divide the hourly GPU cost by the number of tokens generated in an hour, then multiply by one million:

Estimated cost per million tokens = hourly GPU cost ÷ (tokens per second × 3,600) × 1,000,000.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This formula is only a starting point. It assumes the throughput figure and hourly cost apply to the same unit of capacity and that the system sustains that throughput for the hour. It does not automatically include host machines, networking, storage, software, support, power infrastructure, or idle time.

Applying it mechanically to Nvidia’s H200 figures—$1.41 per GPU-hour and 90 tokens per second per GPU—gives about $4.35 per million tokens. Nvidia’s table reports a modeled $4.20. That small difference is a reminder not to infer that a published modeled figure is always a simple calculation from the rounded hourly and throughput figures shown beside it. The GB300 NVL72 figures, $2.65 per GPU-hour and 6,000 tokens per second per GPU, produce about $0.12 per million tokens, close to the table’s reported value.

Use achieved throughput, not a headline maximum

A useful estimate needs throughput measured or modeled for the actual serving workload. Batch size, sequence length, precision, and the latency target can change the result. A configuration that maximizes total tokens per second may not meet a service’s response-time requirement, while a low-latency configuration may leave some capacity unused.

For a meaningful comparison, record the exact model, prompt and output lengths, software versions and settings, number of GPUs, achieved throughput, and latency target. Then compare cost using the same measurement boundary for each option. Without matching those conditions, two cost-per-token figures may not be comparable.

What belongs in a total-cost-of-ownership model?

A GPU’s acquisition price or hourly rate is only one part of total cost of ownership (TCO). Build the model around the job or service you need to deliver, and include the components that determine how much useful work the system completes.

Cost or performance factor What to capture Why it changes unit economics
Accelerator Purchase cost or cloud hourly rate, for the actual configuration Sets the direct cost of capacity, but not how much work that capacity completes.
Utilization and achieved throughput Tokens or training work completed, batch size, sequence length, precision, and latency target Low utilization or lower-than-expected throughput raises effective cost per unit of useful work.
Memory and bandwidth HBM capacity and bandwidth; whether the model fits on fewer GPUs Memory fit can affect device count and inter-chip communication overhead.
Interconnect and topology NVLink and network configuration, plus synchronization and communication time Distributed jobs can spend time exchanging data rather than training or generating output.
Data-center and host infrastructure Power, cooling, host CPUs, storage, networking, rack integration, and facility capacity These costs accompany accelerator operation and may be significant in a complete system budget.
Software and support License term and associated support cost Software expense belongs in the same comparison as hardware and operations.
Capacity and financing Refresh cycle, financing, staffing, and opportunity cost of reserved capacity Capital tied up in capacity that is idle or unavailable for another workload affects the business case.

Software licensing can be a material line item

Nvidia’s Enterprise Licensing Guide lists $4,500 per GPU for one year, $9,000 for two years, $13,500 for three years, $18,000 for four or five years, and $22,500 perpetual with five years of support. These are the guide’s listed license amounts, not a full deployment quote. A TCO model should use the term and coverage applicable to the planned deployment and keep license costs distinct from cloud GPU rates or hardware acquisition costs.

Should I rent or buy H100 or Blackwell GPUs?

There is no evidence here for a universal break-even point: authoritative, geography-specific street prices and availability for complete H100, H200, B200, GB200, and GB300 systems are not established. Cloud rates and supply can change, so the decision depends on current local quotes, expected utilization, deployment needs, and the costs included in each option.

Renting is easier to evaluate when demand varies

Cloud capacity can make sense when demand is irregular, when a team needs to test different configurations, or when building a data-center deployment would be premature. Compare the billed instance configuration and terms with the work it can complete at the required latency. Include any reservation or idle-capacity cost rather than assuming every billed hour becomes useful output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying requires a whole-system and refresh-cycle view

For an on-premises deployment, compare the accelerator purchase with the costs of power, cooling, hosts, storage, networking, rack integration, software, support, staffing, financing, and the expected refresh cycle. A lower acquisition price does not establish a lower cost per trained token or generated token if the system delivers less useful throughput or requires more infrastructure.

For either choice, obtain comparable quotes for the same workload and capacity boundary. The available evidence does not support a general claim that H100, H200, B200, GB200, or GB300 is always cheaper to rent or own.

How should I compare two Nvidia platforms?

Compare platforms on the metric that matches the job, and hold the workload and service requirements constant. A useful evaluation includes both speed and the complete cost of achieving it.

  • Training: time-to-train and cost per trained token or example.
  • Inference: cost per million tokens at the required latency and output quality.
  • Memory and communication: model fit, GPU count, HBM capacity and bandwidth, and interconnect overhead.
  • Efficiency: tokens per watt or per megawatt, alongside total operating cost.
  • Utilization: attainable throughput under the workload rather than a peak number in isolation.
  • Ownership: software, support, infrastructure, financing, staffing, and refresh costs.

A newer platform can have a higher hourly rate yet lower unit economics when its throughput and utilization rise enough. That outcome is not guaranteed: the advantage can shrink if the workload cannot use the added capacity, if the service requires a different latency profile, or if the total-system costs erase the performance gain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher tokens-per-second result mean users will get faster answers?

Not necessarily. A throughput result measures how much work a benchmark completes under its test conditions; an individual request’s response time is a separate service metric. Compare latency at the same prompt and output lengths and service target before treating throughput as a user-facing speed improvement.

Can I compare an Nvidia benchmark directly with a cloud provider’s token price?

Only if both figures use the same model, software and workload conditions, and include the same cost components. A benchmark-derived token cost may not include the complete instance, data-center, or service bill.

Are Nvidia’s benchmark prices guarantees for my deployment?

No. The cited numbers are disclosed benchmarks tied to stated models and configurations, and Nvidia’s 2024 “up to 25x” statements are vendor claims. They do not establish a guaranteed saving for another model or production workload.
