Noticed is a small, self-hosted photo diary that asks for one picture a day and uses a local AI model to write a short caption. The project runs on your own computer: a Python and Flask application stores photos in a folder, keeps diary records in a JSON file, and sends each image to Gemma 3 4B through Ollama for a one-line caption. The result is a dated gallery of ordinary moments rather than an endless social feed. The author describes the idea as “Outside for a minute. Noticed for a day.”

This approach is appealing if you want a personal archive and prefer image processing to happen locally. It is not a fully audited privacy product, however: the implementation still loads fonts from Google Fonts, captions can be wrong, and the project description does not provide hardware, speed, or accuracy benchmarks.

What is Noticed, and how does the daily ritual work?

Noticed is organized around a single constraint: add one photo for each day. The interface shows an empty tile for the current date; after you upload that day’s image, the empty tile disappears and the new entry joins the dated gallery. There is no stated emphasis on likes, followers, or an unlimited stream.

That limit changes what the software is for. You are not trying to document everything or maintain a professional archive. You step outside, notice something, take one picture, and let the diary preserve a small moment. Ray, the project’s author, summarizes the concept as “Outside for a minute. Noticed for a day.” Ray also writes that “A diary is about the most personal thing you can build an AI feature for,” presenting the project as a personal experiment rather than a measured study.

What the finished diary contains

  • A date-ordered gallery of the photos you add.
  • A short caption generated from the visible contents of each image when the local model is available.
  • A visual color strip based on the image’s average color.
  • An empty-caption entry when captioning is unavailable, so saving the photograph does not depend on the AI service.

How does Noticed process an uploaded photo?

The described upload pipeline cleans and standardizes the image before it is stored or captioned. This is important because the diary keeps a fresh JPEG copy rather than simply preserving the original camera file.

  1. Orient the image. Pillow is used to apply the image’s orientation correctly, so a photo shot in portrait mode should display upright.
  2. Resize large dimensions. The image is reduced to a maximum of 2560 pixels. The project description identifies this as an implementation limit, not a benchmark or quality guarantee.
  3. Write a new JPEG. The processed copy is saved as a fresh JPEG without metadata. The author says this removes EXIF information, including GPS data, from the saved image copy.
  4. Calculate the page accent. Noticed derives a single-pixel average color from the image and uses it for the page’s visual color strip.
  5. Request a caption. The cleaned image is sent to Gemma 3 4B through Ollama with a prompt asking for one dreamy or witty line limited to what is visible.
  6. Trim the response. The returned caption is trimmed before it is stored with the diary entry.

This sequence means the diary’s displayed file is not necessarily the original file from your phone or camera. Anyone who needs the untouched original should retain a separate copy; the project description only covers the processed JPEG that Noticed saves.

Which local AI model writes the captions?

According to the author’s October 10, 2026 project article, Noticed uses Gemma 3 4B locally through Ollama. Ollama supplies the local model runtime; the application sends the image and its caption prompt to that runtime on the same computer instead of calling a hosted image-captioning endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The prompt is deliberately narrow. It asks for one short, dreamy or witty sentence based only on visible content. This keeps a caption from becoming a long interpretation of the user’s life, but it does not make the model reliable in every case. The article explicitly warns that the small 4B model is sometimes wrong.

What happens if the model is stopped?

The diary can still save the photo when Ollama or the model is unavailable. In that case, the entry is stored with an empty caption rather than failing the upload. This fallback protects the one-photo-per-day ritual from a temporary local AI problem; it does not automatically generate a caption later.

What does the first run require?

The project description identifies a one-time model download. It does not publish a hardware compatibility matrix, minimum memory requirement, expected inference speed, or measured caption accuracy. Those details can vary with the computer and Ollama setup, so treat the model download and local runtime as prerequisites to confirm on your own machine rather than assuming a particular laptop or desktop will perform identically.

Where are photos and diary records stored?

The application uses a local photo folder and a JSON file. The author says there is no database. In practical terms, the image files and the JSON records are the two parts of the diary’s data model: the folder holds the processed JPEGs, while the JSON file records the entries and their associated information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This design keeps the project small and inspectable. A JSON file is easy to copy or open for troubleshooting, and a folder-based image collection does not require a database server. It also means that a backup should include both the photo folder and the JSON file; copying only one can leave you with images without their diary records or records without the files they reference.

Is Noticed private enough for personal photos?

Its strongest privacy feature is local inference. The author describes the photos being captioned on the user’s computer rather than uploaded to a hosted captioning service. The saved JPEG also has EXIF metadata removed, including GPS information, according to the project description.

Those are implementation claims, not an independent security audit. Local processing reduces one obvious data transfer, but it does not answer every privacy question: the project does not document authentication, encryption at rest, access controls, network monitoring, or a threat model. If other people can access the computer or the diary folder, they may still be able to view the images.

Why the Google Fonts detail matters

The page loads fonts from Google Fonts, which is an external dependency. Therefore, the application should not be described as completely network-independent. The AI caption request is local as described, but the browser may still contact Google’s font servers when the page loads unless the font dependency is removed or replaced with locally hosted files.

How does local captioning compare with a hosted service?

Noticed’s architecture makes a clear trade-off: more local control in exchange for more setup responsibility. The following comparison uses only the behavior described for this project and does not claim a benchmark against other products.

Decision factor Noticed’s described approach What that means for you
Where captions run Gemma 3 4B through Ollama on the user’s computer Photos can remain on the computer during captioning, but you must run the local model.
Photo handling Pillow orients, resizes to at most 2560 pixels, and writes a new JPEG without metadata The diary stores a cleaned derivative rather than the original camera file.
Storage A local photo folder plus a JSON file; no database There is little infrastructure to maintain, but both components belong in backups.
Caption behavior One short dreamy or witty line based on visible content Entries stay compact, while subjective or incorrect descriptions remain possible.
Failure behavior Photo saving can continue with an empty caption if the model is not running A model outage does not have to break the diary entry.
Network dependency Google Fonts are loaded externally The page is not entirely self-contained on a default installation.

How would a normal day with Noticed look?

The workflow is intentionally short. You take one picture, open the diary, and add it to the current-day tile. The application processes the image, attempts the local caption, and places the result in the gallery.

  1. Notice something outside. The project does not require a particular camera or phone model; it treats a photograph as the input.
  2. Take one photo. The daily rule is the organizing principle, not a quota that encourages multiple uploads.
  3. Upload it to the current-day tile. Before the upload, the interface shows an empty tile for that date; after a successful save, that placeholder disappears.
  4. Review the generated line. The caption is intended to describe visible content in a dreamy or witty way, but the author cautions that the 4B model can be wrong.
  5. Keep the entry even if captioning fails. A stopped or unavailable model leaves the photo saved with an empty caption.

The result is a gallery that grows one dated item at a time. Nothing in the project description indicates a social-sharing layer, recommendation feed, or requirement to publish the images publicly.

What are Noticed’s main limitations?

Noticed is deliberately modest, and its limits follow from that design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Caption quality is not guaranteed. The author reports occasional mistakes from Gemma 3 4B, and no accuracy percentage is provided.
  • Setup details are incomplete. The project description mentions Ollama and a one-time model download but gives no supported-hardware list, performance measurements, or installation matrix.
  • The saved image is a derivative. Resizing and metadata removal are useful for a diary, but they mean the stored JPEG is not the untouched source file.
  • It is not fully offline by default. Google Fonts introduces an external page dependency even though caption inference is local.
  • The daily limit is intentional. If you want an unlimited photo stream, the one-entry-per-day interface may feel restrictive rather than helpful.
  • There is no database layer. This reduces complexity, but users must protect the folder and JSON file themselves and should not expect database features such as built-in multi-user permissions.

Who is Noticed best suited to?

Noticed fits someone who values a small personal ritual, wants captions without sending images to a hosted captioning service, and is comfortable running a local application. It is especially suitable for a dated visual diary in which consistency matters more than volume.

It is less suitable if you need guaranteed caption correctness, enterprise-grade access controls, quantified performance, or a polished setup guide covering every computer configuration. The available project description does not establish those capabilities.

How should you evaluate the project before relying on it?

Use the project’s own boundaries as a checklist rather than assuming that “local AI” solves every operational concern.

  • Confirm that your computer can install and run Ollama and download Gemma 3 4B.
  • Decide whether keeping a separate copy of original photos is important, since Noticed stores processed JPEGs.
  • Plan backups for both the photo directory and the JSON diary file.
  • Check whether loading Google Fonts fits your privacy or offline requirements.
  • Read each generated caption before treating it as an accurate description, especially for people, places, or sensitive scenes.
  • Test the empty-caption fallback so you know an unavailable model will not prevent a photo from being saved.

These checks reflect the project as described by Ray in the October 10, 2026 article. Repository-level setup instructions and current compatibility details are not established by that description.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does local captioning mean Noticed works with no internet connection at all?

No. The caption model is described as running on the same computer, but the default page loads fonts from Google Fonts. A fully disconnected setup would require removing or locally hosting that font dependency, a change the project description does not document.

Should I keep the original photos outside the diary?

Consider doing so if the camera file matters to you. Noticed saves a reoriented, resized JPEG with metadata removed, so the diary copy is designed for display and privacy rather than preservation of every original-file property.

Can I change the one-photo-per-day rule without rebuilding the app?

The available description presents one photo per day as the core interface rule and does not identify a user setting for changing it. Altering that behavior would therefore require examining and potentially modifying the application code.

What should I back up to restore a Noticed diary?

Back up the local photo folder and the JSON file together. The folder contains the processed images while the JSON file contains diary records, so preserving only one may break the relationship between entries and pictures.
