Verdict: The Minisforum N5 Max is worth considering if you want substantial local storage and local-AI compute in one compact, always-on chassis and are prepared to configure the software yourself. Its 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Radeon 8060S graphics, unified memory, five SATA bays, five NVMe positions, and dual 10GbE make it unusually capable. The trade-off is a high purchase price and MinisCloud software that an independent review found immature for serious NAS administration.
For a general NAS buyer seeking appliance-like setup, a mature NAS platform or a conventional PC paired with a discrete GPU may be easier to live with. For a technical user who values hybrid storage and wants to run local models without building two separate systems, the N5 Max offers a distinctive, if expensive, combination.
What is the Minisforum N5 Max?
The N5 Max is a five-bay network-attached storage system built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mobile-class processor. It is not simply a tiny desktop with drive slots: Minisforum combines a 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 CPU, Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, unified LPDDR5X memory, five 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA bays, five M.2 NVMe positions, and 10-gigabit networking in a 199 × 202.4 × 252.3 mm enclosure.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The processor can boost to 5.1 GHz, has 64 MB of L3 cache, a 55 W default TDP, and a configurable 45–120 W cTDP. Minisforum specifies a 70–90 W operating range for the N5 Max and advertises up to 126 TOPS of local-AI performance. A 250 W external adapter powers the system. The enclosure weighs 5.8 kg before you add drives.

Official US configurations use 64 GB or 128 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory and include 128 GB of storage for the operating system. The memory is shared by the CPU and Radeon graphics, so capacity matters for both virtualized workloads and larger quantized models.
What are the N5 Max’s hardware specifications?
The following specification sheet separates what Minisforum advertises from the practical consequence for a NAS or local-AI build.
| Component | Specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395; 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads; up to 5.1 GHz; 64 MB L3 | High parallel CPU capacity for file services, containers, compilation, and preprocessing. |
| Graphics and AI | Radeon 8060S integrated GPU; system claim of up to 126 TOPS | Runs supported GPU, NPU, or Vulkan inference backends without a discrete graphics card. |
| Memory | 64 GB or 128 GB unified LPDDR5X | CPU and GPU draw from the same pool; more capacity helps larger models and filesystem cache. |
| Drive bays | Five 3.5-inch/2.5-inch SATA positions | Supports a conventional multi-disk RAID pool for bulk storage. |
| NVMe | Five M.2 positions | Allows fast pools, metadata or cache devices, and separate application storage. |
| Networking | Two 10GbE ports | Can connect to a high-speed switch, separate storage and client networks, or a supported aggregation setup. |
| External expansion | USB4 v2 | Provides a fast path for compatible external storage, docks, or other peripherals. |
| Display | HDMI 2.1 | Useful for local installation and troubleshooting without relying on remote administration. |
| Power | 250 W adapter; Minisforum operating range 70–90 W | Leaves a defined adapter limit for the compute board and installed drives; actual consumption varies by workload and disk spin-up. |
| Size and weight | 199 × 202.4 × 252.3 mm; 5.8 kg | Small enough for a desk or equipment shelf, but substantially larger and heavier than a diskless mini PC. |
How much storage can the N5 Max hold?
It can hold five SATA drives and five NVMe drives, but the total terabytes depend on the capacities you purchase. Minisforum does not state a maximum disk capacity in the supplied specifications, so treat the chassis count as the firm limit and check the compatibility list for the exact drives you plan to use.
Five-bay SATA storage
The five hot-swap-style positions accept either 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA devices. Five bays give you enough members for RAID 5, which preserves one drive’s worth of parity capacity, or for other layouts that prioritize redundancy or speed. RAID is not a backup: deletion, corruption, ransomware, a controller mistake, or a second failure during a rebuild can still destroy the only copy of your data.
IT Pro’s August 7, 2026 review populated all five bays with 2 TB WD Red Plus disks in RAID 5. That setup is a useful reference because it reflects a realistic NAS workload rather than an empty chassis, but it is not a guarantee for every disk model or RAID implementation.
Five M.2 positions and tiered storage
The five M.2 positions let you separate fast workloads from the bulk pool. In the same review, two SSDs were placed in RAID 1 and one SSD was later tested as a read-cache device. You could instead reserve NVMe devices for applications, virtual machines, a separate high-speed pool, or metadata, depending on the operating system and filesystem you choose.

Cache is not automatically beneficial. It adds another failure and monitoring path, and a read cache cannot accelerate data that is not accessed repeatedly. Start with a simple, redundant layout, measure the workload, and add cache only when the measurements justify the extra complexity.

IT Pro recorded the following results. They are test observations under that reviewer’s drive, network, and software conditions, not guaranteed transfer rates.
| Test and configuration | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TrueNAS, 11 GB dataset written to the five-disk RAID 5 pool | 202 MB/s; completed in under a minute | Shows strong sequential write performance for a five-disk array. |
| MinisCloud, larger-file transfers | More than 590 MB/s | Large sequential files can use the network and array efficiently. |
| MinisCloud, mixed-file Windows test | About 145 MB/s | Small files and metadata reduce throughput substantially. |
| Mixed-file Windows test with SSD caching | About 165 MB/s | The cache improved this workload modestly, rather than transforming it. |
The review also found no detected storage-performance impact while AI workloads ran concurrently. That is important if the N5 Max will serve files while generating responses, although your result will depend on model size, disk activity, network congestion, and the selected backend.
Physical installation cautions
One IT Pro setup report described the drive-caddy release lever as feeling fragile. That is an observation from one installation, not proof of a universal defect, but it is a good reason to support each caddy, avoid forcing the lever, and label drives before inserting them. A failed or misordered disk can turn routine maintenance into a recovery event.
How fast is the N5 Max for local AI?
The N5 Max is fast enough for useful local inference, but there is no single speed figure. Tokens per second change with model parameter count, quantization, context length, GPU-memory allocation, and whether the software uses ROCm, the NPU, or a Vulkan path.
Independent model results
IT Pro’s measurements illustrate the spread:
| Model or comparison | Backend or system | Reported speed |
|---|---|---|
| Gemma 4 26B | N5 Max test path | About 44 tokens per second |
| Gemma 4 31B | N5 Max test path | About 9 tokens per second |
| Llama 3.2 3B | N5 Max | About 72 tokens per second |
| Llama 3.2 3B | Reference integrated-graphics PC | Just under 30 tokens per second |
| Llama 3.2 3B | Reference system with an RTX 5070 | 316 tokens per second |
| gpt-oss 20B | ROCm on the N5 Max | More than 40 tokens per second |
| gpt-oss 20B | NPU acceleration | 18.9 tokens per second |
| gpt-oss 20B | MXFP4 Vulkan path | 72.9 tokens per second |
The comparison shows why the N5 Max should not be judged by its TOPS headline alone. The 126-TOPS figure is a peak local-AI capability claim from Minisforum; the token figures are end-to-end results for specific models and software paths. A smaller model can feel very responsive, while a slightly larger model with a different density or quantization can slow dramatically.

How unified memory helps, and where it stops helping
Because the Radeon graphics share the system’s LPDDR5X pool, the N5 Max is not constrained by a small, separate consumer-GPU VRAM allocation in the same way as many desktop cards. That can make a larger quantized model loadable. Shared memory is not free, however: the CPU, operating system, filesystem cache, and model all compete for capacity, and unified-memory bandwidth is still finite.
IT Pro reported a default BIOS GPU-memory ceiling of around 30 GB, configurable to 48 GB. That setting can determine whether a model loads on the GPU at all. Models in the 70B class become difficult once weights, runtime buffers, and context overhead are included, even with the higher setting. Changing the ceiling also reduces memory available to other system functions, so it should be treated as a workload-specific choice rather than a permanent maximum-performance switch.
Choosing an inference backend
ROCm, NPU acceleration, and Vulkan can produce very different results on the same machine. Before buying the N5 Max for a particular model, verify that the model format and quantization are supported by the application you intend to use, then benchmark a representative prompt length. A model that technically loads but produces single-digit token rates may be unsuitable for interactive use.

Is MinisCloud mature enough for a serious NAS?
Based on IT Pro’s August 7, 2026 review, MinisCloud is the N5 Max’s weakest area. The reviewer reported no web administration, no app ecosystem, missing configuration backup and restore, and inconsistent account behavior between SMB file sharing and remote features. Those gaps matter more on an always-on NAS than they would on a temporary lab machine.
MinisCloud can still be a reasonable starting point if you value a vendor-integrated setup and have simple file-sharing needs. The problem is operational confidence: without browser-based administration and configuration export, recovery and remote troubleshooting become more dependent on the local interface and vendor implementation.

TrueNAS and OpenMediaVault as alternatives
The reviewer installed and tested TrueNAS and OpenMediaVault on the hardware. Advanced users may prefer one of these established NAS operating systems when filesystem controls, service management, or a broader self-hosted software stack matter more than the factory experience. Installing an alternative OS is a project: confirm that networking, drive discovery, power management, and the AI runtime you need all work before committing production data.

| AI integration | Convenient if the supplied stack supports your model | More control, but you must install and maintain drivers, runtimes, and services |
Do not assume that moving between operating systems preserves every pool automatically. Back up data, document the original layout, and verify import support for the filesystem and RAID scheme before replacing MinisCloud.
What does the N5 Max cost, and what is included?
Minisforum’s current US store listing shows a sale price of $2,399 for the 64 GB configuration with 128 GB of OS storage and $3,599 for the 128 GB configuration with 128 GB of OS storage. These are current sale prices, so availability and pricing can change. They do not include the five SATA data drives or the NVMe devices you may want for a pool, cache, or applications.
| Configuration | Listed US sale price | Included memory and OS storage | What you still need to budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base configuration | $2,399 | 64 GB unified LPDDR5X; 128 GB OS storage | Data drives, optional NVMe devices, backup media, and any 10GbE switch or cabling |
| Higher-memory configuration | $3,599 | 128 GB unified LPDDR5X; 128 GB OS storage | The same storage, networking, and backup additions |
How does that compare with other architectures?
The N5 Max’s value comes from combining compute, memory, drive connectivity, and a compact NAS enclosure. A conventional PC plus a discrete GPU can deliver much higher inference throughput on some models; IT Pro’s Llama 3.2 3B comparison reached 316 tokens per second on an RTX 5070 system versus about 72 on the N5 Max. That separate-PC route also lets you choose a mature NAS appliance, but it means buying, powering, and maintaining more than one system.
A mature NAS platform with a modest CPU can be easier to administer and may offer a broader storage ecosystem, but it will not necessarily provide the N5 Max’s 16 CPU cores, Radeon 8060S, unified-memory capacity, or five NVMe positions. The right comparison is therefore total system cost and maintenance time, not the bare price of an empty NAS chassis.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a simple worksheet before ordering:
- Start with the N5 Max configuration price.
- Add five NAS-rated SATA drives sized for your required usable capacity and redundancy.
- Add NVMe devices only for a defined pool, cache, or application workload.
- Include an independent backup target; RAID parity does not replace it.
- Include a 10GbE switch and cables if your network does not already support the ports.
- Assign a value to the time required to install, update, monitor, and recover the software stack.
How should you configure the N5 Max?
A deliberate build sequence prevents an expensive chassis from becoming an untested pile of drives.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Choose memory for the model sizes you actually intend to run. The 64 GB and 128 GB options are the official choices. Larger models benefit from the higher capacity, but memory alone cannot overcome unsupported backends or insufficient bandwidth.
- Plan the storage layout before inserting disks. Decide which drives form the redundant SATA pool and which M.2 devices serve applications, a separate pool, or cache. Write down serial numbers and bay positions.
- Install the caddies gently. Support the tray, operate the release lever without force, and verify that every drive is detected before creating a pool.
- Select a redundancy scheme. A five-disk RAID 5 layout offers parity efficiency for bulk files; another layout may be preferable if rebuild time, write performance, or additional fault tolerance is more important. Keep a separate backup regardless of the choice.
- Test MinisCloud before migrating production data. Create a small share, copy representative large and mixed files, test remote access, and confirm how accounts behave over SMB. If the administration limits are unacceptable, schedule a clean installation of TrueNAS or OpenMediaVault before loading the real dataset.
- Configure networking deliberately. Connect one or both 10GbE ports to compatible equipment, assign addresses, and measure a real transfer. Do not enable jumbo frames or link aggregation unless every device and switch in the path is configured consistently.
- Install and validate the AI stack. Confirm the graphics driver and runtime, test ROCm, Vulkan, and NPU paths with the model you plan to use, and record tokens per second at your normal context length. Change the BIOS GPU-memory allocation only after measuring the default setting.
- Document recovery. Because the reviewed MinisCloud release lacked configuration backup and restore, keep an external record of shares, users, network settings, pool layout, and AI-runtime versions. Perform a restore drill while the system is still new.
How are thermals, ports, and day-to-day operation?
IT Pro listed sound thermal management as a reason to buy and did not report storage throughput being affected by concurrent AI activity. That supports the N5 Max’s intended role as an always-on workstation/NAS hybrid, but the review did not establish a universal noise level or power draw for every drive population. Five mechanical disks, especially during spin-up, will sound different from five SSDs.
HDMI 2.1 is useful during installation or recovery when remote services are unavailable. USB4 v2 gives you a high-speed expansion option for compatible devices. Dual 10GbE is valuable only when the rest of the network can move data at similar rates; a single client with a slower link will not benefit simply because two ports are present.
Who should buy the Minisforum N5 Max?
Buy it when the combination of local storage and local inference is more important than appliance polish.
Good fit
- Technical users who want one chassis for a five-disk pool, NVMe workloads, and local models.
- Developers who need many CPU cores and an integrated GPU without assembling a separate desktop.
- Households or small labs with 10GbE infrastructure and a willingness to test software versions.
- Users who can justify the 128 GB configuration for larger models, filesystem cache, or concurrent services.
Look elsewhere first
- Anyone who expects a polished, browser-managed NAS with a broad app catalog on day one.
- Buyers whose primary goal is maximum tokens per second; a discrete GPU system can be substantially faster on some models.
- Organizations that cannot allocate time for OS installation, driver testing, configuration documentation, and recovery drills.
- Anyone whose budget does not include drives and an independent backup target in addition to the chassis price.
What are the main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Limitations and risks |
|---|---|
| 16-core/32-thread CPU and capable Radeon 8060S in a NAS enclosure | High entry price before adding storage drives |
| Five SATA bays plus five M.2 positions for hybrid pools and optional caching | Actual usable capacity depends on separately purchased drives and RAID overhead |
| Dual 10GbE, USB4 v2, and HDMI 2.1 | Fast ports require compatible switches, clients, cables, and workloads |
| Unified memory can load models that exceed the VRAM of some consumer GPUs | BIOS allocation, bandwidth, context overhead, and backend support still limit large models |
| Strong storage results and no detected storage penalty during concurrent AI testing | MinisCloud was described by IT Pro as immature, with no web administration or configuration backup/restore |
| Reviewer found sound thermal management | One setup reported a fragile-feeling caddy release lever; handle trays carefully |
Simon Handby’s IT Pro verdict on August 7, 2026 captured the trade-off: “This five-bay NAS is optimized for AI workloads, but it feels a little rough around the edges.” ServeTheHome’s Vic A described it on August 11, 2026 as a combination of a 16-core/32-thread Strix Halo system, 64 GB LPDDR5X, hybrid tiered storage, dual 10GbE, and flagship compute in one five-bay NAS. Those descriptions point to the same conclusion: the hardware is unusually ambitious, while the software experience determines whether that ambition is useful to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the N5 Max’s unified memory be upgraded later?
Minisforum lists 64 GB and 128 GB configurations, and the memory is unified LPDDR5X rather than a separately documented DIMM kit. The available information does not establish a user-replaceable upgrade path, so choose the capacity you need at purchase instead of assuming a later expansion.
Will two 10GbE ports double the speed of one file copy?
Not automatically. A single transfer normally follows one network path; doubling throughput requires client, operating-system, switch, and protocol support for multichannel or link aggregation, plus storage fast enough to keep both links busy.
What backup plan makes sense with five disks in RAID 5?
Keep at least one independent copy outside the N5 Max and use a versioned or immutable destination for important files. A practical 3-2-1 design uses three copies on two types of media, with one copy offline or off-site, and includes periodic restore tests rather than relying on a healthy-array indicator.
Is the 250 W adapter enough when all bays are populated?
The adapter is rated at 250 W, while the compute platform is specified for a 70–90 W operating range; the remaining headroom must also cover disks and peripherals. Startup draw varies by drive, so verify the selected disks’ spin-up requirements and watch for power-related resets during a full-bay stress test.
Why can a smaller model be faster than a slightly larger one on this NAS?
Inference speed depends on quantization, model density, context length, and the active ROCm, NPU, or Vulkan implementation, not parameter count alone. Benchmark the exact model file and prompt length you plan to use before treating a published tokens-per-second figure as representative.
