For a practical starting point, plan on 16GB of system RAM and 8–12GB of VRAM for a small local agent, or 32GB of system RAM and 12–16GB of VRAM for a more comfortable general-purpose setup. Coding agents, longer contexts, and larger models can call for 32–64GB of system RAM and 16–24GB or more of VRAM. These are planning ranges, not universal minimums: the model’s quantization, context length, agent tools, runtime, and available memory headroom all affect what will fit.

How much RAM and VRAM does a local AI agent need?

A useful baseline is 32GB of system RAM and 16GB of VRAM for a general-purpose local agent, with 16GB of system RAM and 8–12GB of VRAM as an entry point for a smaller, quantized model and moderate context. The bigger your model or context, the more memory you should budget. For a 20B–30B quantized model, 64GB of system RAM and 24–48GB of VRAM are more realistic planning targets, though the specific file and runtime determine whether it fits.

The bands below are documentation-based guidance synthesized from the sources cited in the 2026 documentation examples. They are not guaranteed minimums or benchmark results. A model that appears to fit on paper can still run out of usable memory when the desktop, application, context cache, or agent workload needs room.

Target workload Starting system RAM Starting VRAM or unified memory Planning note
Small local chat or lightweight tool agent 16GB 8–12GB Use a small, quantized model and moderate context.
General-purpose local agent 32GB 12–16GB Reserve capacity for tools, browser use, retrieval, and the desktop.
Coding agent or longer-context workflow 32–64GB 16–24GB Context and tool output can increase KV-cache demand.
Larger 20B–30B quantized model 64GB preferred 24–48GB Check the actual quantized model file and leave room for cache.
Multi-model, CPU-offload, or workstation workflow 64–128GB 48GB or more, or large unified memory Plan for greater storage, cooling, and power needs.

These figures are starting points, not a promise that every model in a parameter-size class will fit. Runtime support, operating system, and GPU backend also matter.

What is the difference between system RAM and VRAM?

VRAM is the GPU’s memory. When model layers run on the GPU, VRAM holds their weights and typically the KV cache used to keep track of the conversation context. System RAM serves the operating system, the agent program, tools, browser, retrieved documents, and any model layers the runtime places on the CPU.

Some computers use unified memory shared by CPU and GPU rather than separate pools. In that design, a large unified-memory capacity can give the system more flexibility to hold a model and other work, but it does not make memory unlimited: the operating system and applications still consume part of the total, and performance depends on the system and software.

If a model does not fit entirely in VRAM, some runtimes can offload work to system RAM. That can make a larger model load on a machine that otherwise lacks GPU memory, but it does not turn system RAM into equivalent VRAM or guarantee the same speed. Confirm that the runtime supports the desired backend and offload configuration before relying on it.

Why do model size and context length change memory use?

Parameter count is only a first estimate. The model’s weights occupy memory, but the numerical precision used to store them changes how much space they need. Quantization stores weights at lower precision to reduce memory use, at potential trade-offs that depend on the model and quantization chosen. NVIDIA Build describes quantized models as using lower-precision weights to fit in less VRAM.

Context length is another major variable. The runtime maintains a KV cache as the model processes conversation history and other context. Longer prompts, retained conversation, retrieved documents, and tool output can all grow that context and increase cache use. An agent that handles long code files or repeatedly adds browser or retrieval results can therefore need more memory than a short-prompt chat setup using the same model.

As one concrete estimate, the Vulkan Documentation Project’s 2026 guide puts a 30B Q4_K_M model at roughly 18GB and a 12B model at roughly 8GB; it estimates that a 16k context can add another 1–2GB of KV cache. Those are approximate figures for the cited model examples, not universal sizes for every 30B or 12B model.

How can I estimate a safe VRAM target?

Do not compare model-file size with the GPU’s advertised VRAM and assume the remainder is spare. Estimate usable space after accounting for the desktop, the application’s peak allocation, model weights, and KV cache. Then leave additional headroom for the agent’s context and tool activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact model file. Record its parameter count and quantization, and check its actual download or runtime-reported size rather than relying on the parameter count alone.
  2. Estimate the context cache. Use the runtime’s or model provider’s figures if available. A 16k context was estimated at 1–2GB of additional KV cache in the Vulkan Documentation Project’s example, but cache use varies.
  3. Subtract other active use. Include operating-system and desktop use, the AI application’s peak memory allocation, and memory reserved for other GPU workloads.
  4. Keep headroom. Add room for context growth, retrieved material, and tool calls. Do not plan around a configuration that only fits when every other application is closed.
  5. Check real runtime behavior. Confirm the model loads with the intended context and backend, then watch memory use during a representative agent task—not just at startup.

The Vulkan guide illustrates the risk: a 24GB RTX 4090 running a roughly 18GB 30B Q4_K_M model can have no remaining margin after a 6GB application allocation, before allowing for cache or extra agent activity. It is an example of why “the model is smaller than the GPU” is not a sufficient fit test.

Is 16GB of VRAM enough for Ollama?

It can be enough for smaller models and moderate contexts, but it is not a blanket capacity guarantee. The 2026 NVIDIA recipe bands cite 8–16GB for Qwen 3.5 9B, 16–24GB for Qwen 3.6 35B, and 24–48GB for Qwen3.8 27B. Those recipe bands show why the model and its configuration matter more than a single “VRAM needed for Ollama” figure.

Ollama’s hardware compatibility also depends on supported NVIDIA compute capabilities and driver versions, as documented by Ollama. Before choosing hardware, verify that the particular GPU, driver, operating system, and Ollama build work together. A card with enough nominal memory can still be an unsuitable choice if its backend is unsupported or if the model, context, and application leave no usable margin.

Can I run a 30B model on a 24GB GPU?

Some 30B quantized models may fit in a 24GB GPU, but fitting the weights alone does not establish that an agent workload will run comfortably. The Vulkan Documentation Project estimates roughly 18GB for a 30B Q4_K_M example. Its 24GB RTX 4090 example shows that a 6GB application allocation can consume the remaining nominal capacity before cache and context growth are accounted for.

Check the exact quantized file, the intended context length, the runtime’s memory behavior, and the GPU’s background allocation. If the full workload does not fit, possible trade-offs include using a smaller model, choosing a more memory-efficient quantization, shortening context, closing other GPU-heavy applications, or using supported CPU offload. Each changes capability, convenience, or performance; none guarantees that the same setup will remain responsive.

How much system RAM does a coding agent need?

Start with 32GB and consider 64GB for coding workflows with longer contexts, larger repositories, retrieval, or several tools open at once. The agent’s memory budget includes more than the model: the operating system, editor or browser, agent process, repository data, tool processes, and retrieved content all compete for system RAM. If model layers are offloaded to the CPU, system RAM must also accommodate those layers.

JetBrains’ 2026 Junie Local requirements list 64GB of RAM on Apple Silicon and 24GB of VRAM on Windows RTX. That is a product-specific requirement, not a universal specification for every local coding agent. It demonstrates why checking the chosen agent’s own requirements is essential; a generic sizing table cannot replace the software’s stated platform requirements.

What do published hardware tiers say about larger models?

Vendor capacity guidance helps illustrate what different classes of hardware are designed to accommodate, but advertised model capacities are not guarantees of a particular speed, quality, context length, or agent experience.

Hardware category in NVIDIA’s 2026 examples Published memory figure Published model-capacity figure

RTX Spark Up to 128GB unified memory Up to 120B
DGX Spark Up to 128GB unified memory Up to 200B per device
RTX PRO Up to 96GB VRAM Up to 150B per device

These are “up to” figures from NVIDIA’s 2026 material. They describe capacity claims for the named product tiers, not independent test results or a statement that every model at that size will run at a useful speed. NVIDIA’s separate NeMo Helix 2026 guidance specifies 16GB minimum system RAM and 32GB recommended for local GPU workloads, alongside 40GB minimum and 80GB recommended VRAM for those workloads. That requirement is much higher than the entry-level bands above because it refers to NeMo Helix, not all local agents.

What else should I check before buying or configuring a machine?

Memory capacity is only one part of a workable local-AI setup. Compare the intended model and quantization, maximum context, expected tokens per second, memory headroom, backend and driver support, and the system’s noise, power use, upgrade options, and total cost.

  • Runtime and driver compatibility: Check the exact runtime’s documented GPU support and driver requirements. Ollama publishes supported NVIDIA compute capabilities and driver versions; requirements can change, so verify the current documentation for the software version you plan to use.
  • Disk space: Keep enough fast storage for model files and runtime artifacts. NVIDIA’s llama.cpp playbook gives an example needing about 30GB of free memory including model and KV cache, and at least about 40GB of free disk for the download and build artifacts. These are figures for that example, not a universal requirement for every model or installation.
  • Thermals and power: Sustained inference and workstation use can make cooling and power delivery relevant, particularly in larger builds. These are practical hardware considerations, not memory-capacity figures.
  • Upgrade path: A discrete GPU can provide dedicated VRAM and may offer high GPU throughput, while a large unified-memory system trades dedicated VRAM for a shared pool. The right balance depends on software compatibility, expected workload, and whether you can upgrade the memory or GPU later.

Should I prioritize more memory or a faster GPU?

First make sure the intended model and context fit with margin; then compare speed and other trade-offs among configurations that can run the workload. NVIDIA’s guidance is to use “the most powerful model that fits comfortably in your GPU’s memory.” In practice, a larger memory pool can make a larger model or longer context possible, while a faster GPU can affect inference speed. Memory alone does not guarantee better output quality or faster generation.

If two machines are close, compare them using the same model, quantization, context, runtime, and representative task where possible. Look at tokens per second and whether the agent can complete the full workflow without memory pressure, not merely whether the model starts. No independent benchmark results are established for the sizing bands above, so treat them as capacity-planning guidance rather than a performance ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the most practical way to choose a memory target?

Choose hardware around the workload you actually plan to run, not the largest model number you can find. For small local chat, 16GB system RAM with 8–12GB VRAM is a reasonable starting range. For general agent use, 32GB system RAM with 12–16GB VRAM provides more room for surrounding applications. For coding or longer context, plan for 32–64GB RAM and 16–24GB VRAM; larger 20B–30B quantized models can push the target toward 64GB RAM and 24–48GB VRAM.

Before committing, confirm the exact model, context, runtime compatibility, and storage requirements, then leave margin beyond the model weights. A comfortable fit is more useful than a system that technically loads a model but spills memory as soon as the agent begins working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will adding more system RAM make a GPU model run faster?

Not necessarily. Extra system RAM can help when tools, documents, or CPU-offloaded layers need space, but it does not increase a GPU’s VRAM bandwidth or processing capability.

Can I use an external GPU for a local AI agent?

The material here does not establish a universal external-GPU compatibility or performance rule. Check the computer’s connection and operating-system support as well as the runtime’s GPU backend requirements before treating an external enclosure as a solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a bigger model always give better answers from a local agent?

Not automatically. Quality depends on the model and task, while memory capacity only determines what can be loaded with a given configuration; a larger model that leaves too little room for context may be a worse fit for the workflow.

How much free disk space should I leave for a local AI model?

It depends on the model and installation. NVIDIA’s llama.cpp playbook example calls for at least about 40GB free disk for its download and build artifacts, so check the specific model and setup rather than using that example as a universal figure.
