For most people running AI locally on a mini PC, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD is the sensible starting point. It provides headroom for a quantized small or medium language model, the operating system, development tools, and normal multitasking. Choose 64GB of RAM and 2TB or more if you expect larger models, several model families, retrieval indexes, containers, datasets, or image-generation files. A 16GB/512GB system can work for light experimentation and cloud-assisted use, but it leaves little room for growth.
The right specification depends on more than the model’s headline parameter count. You must budget memory for the model, context, runtime, operating system, and other applications, then reserve SSD capacity for model files that can range from tens to hundreds of gigabytes.
How much RAM and storage does a mini PC need for AI?
A balanced general-purpose local-AI mini PC has 32GB of RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD. That tier is appropriate for one or two small-to-medium quantized models, coding tools, browsers, and ordinary desktop work. Move to 64GB and 2TB or more when the computer will be a model library, a development server, or a machine for retrieval-augmented generation and image assets.

|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD | Light chat, small quantized models, short context, cloud-assisted workflows | Lowest practical entry point for local experiments | Little room for several models, large datasets, or simultaneous applications |
| 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD | Most home labs, coding assistants, document retrieval, and general local AI | Useful system headroom and space for several model files | Large models, many containers, and image-generation assets can consume the remaining capacity quickly |
| 64GB RAM / 2TB or larger SSD | Larger models, multiple model families, indexes, containers, datasets, and image generation | Much less paging and fewer storage-management compromises | Higher purchase cost; gains still depend on memory bandwidth, acceleration, and cooling |
These are planning tiers, not performance guarantees. Intel advises developers to account for both “the size of the underlying LLM and the requisite memory or RAM size” and “additional operational memory needed for development to avoid regular memory paging.” In practice, a model that technically fits can still be unpleasant to use if the operating system or another application forces it to page to the SSD.

Why does an AI model need more memory than its advertised size?
The model weights are only one part of the working set. Runtime buffers, the conversation context, tokenizer data, caches, the operating system, and your other applications all compete for RAM. If the mini PC uses integrated graphics or an NPU, some system memory may also be shared with that accelerator.
Model weights and quantization
Quantization stores weights with fewer bits, reducing memory demand at the cost of some quality or flexibility. A quantized build can make a model practical on a mini PC that cannot hold the full-precision version. The exact saving depends on the model architecture and quantization format, so compare the download’s stated size rather than relying only on a parameter label.
Context length changes the requirement
A short chat and a long document-analysis session do not have the same memory footprint. Larger context windows require larger key-value caches, and retrieval systems add embedding indexes and source documents. Leave extra RAM if you plan to keep long conversations, ingest manuals, or run an editor, browser, database, and model server together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Paging is a warning sign
When available RAM runs out, the operating system moves data to the SSD. NVMe storage is far slower than RAM for this purpose, so responses can become irregular and the entire desktop may feel stalled. More RAM is usually a better fix than simply buying a faster SSD when the problem is sustained paging.
Is 16GB enough for Ollama?
It can be enough for a light Ollama setup, but it is not a comfortable general-purpose target. A 16GB mini PC is suited to small quantized models, short prompts, and cloud-assisted work while other applications remain modest. It is a poor fit for keeping multiple large models loaded or running a model alongside several containers and data services.

Ollama’s Windows documentation lists at least 4GB of free space for the installation, but that figure is only for the application. Ollama also states that downloaded models can consume tens to hundreds of gigabytes. A machine with 512GB may therefore run out of disk long before the operating system does, especially if you keep multiple quantization variants.
AMD’s Ryzen AI documentation lists 8GB of RAM and 3GB of free disk space as minimum LLM prerequisites, and 16GB of RAM and 15GB of free disk space as recommended for its NPU workflow. Those figures describe a documented workflow prerequisite, not a promise that every current local model will run well. Model size, context, accelerator support, and other applications still determine the experience.

How much SSD space do AI models need?
Plan the SSD as a model library rather than an operating-system disk. Reserve space for the OS, AI runtime, model variants, embeddings, vector indexes, caches, logs, updates, and temporary downloads. Since Ollama documents a range from tens to hundreds of gigabytes for downloaded models, 1TB is a sensible baseline and 2TB is more comfortable for experimentation.
| Storage target | Planning use | Capacity pressure to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB | One installation, a small model collection, and cloud-assisted work | Several model variants, datasets, or image files can consume free space quickly |
| 1TB | Balanced local-AI workstation with several models and development tools | Keep an eye on caches, duplicate quantizations, and container layers |
| 2TB | Regular experimentation, retrieval indexes, multiple model families, and creative assets | Large datasets and frequent model downloads can still require housekeeping |
| 4TB | Long-term model library or a mini server shared by several users | Only useful if the mini PC’s slot, firmware, and thermal design support the drive |
Do not fill an SSD to its last few gigabytes. The operating system, model runtime, updates, and temporary files need working space, and a nearly full drive complicates cleanup and can affect general system responsiveness.
Can Ollama’s model directory be moved?
Yes. Ollama documents the OLLAMA_MODELS setting for placing model storage on another volume. This is useful when the boot drive is small or when the mini PC has a second M.2 slot. Set the location before downloading a large library, then verify that the runtime can read the new directory and that the destination has enough free space for future versions.

Can a mini PC run a 7B or 14B model?
A mini PC can run many 7B- and 14B-class models when an appropriate quantized build fits in available memory, but no single RAM figure guarantees acceptable speed. The result depends on quantization, context length, architecture, memory bandwidth, accelerator support, and sustained cooling.

A 16GB machine is the entry tier for trying a small quantized model with a short context and few other applications open. A 32GB system gives the runtime substantially more room for context, a browser, an editor, or a retrieval service. Treat this as a capacity guideline, not a benchmark or a promise of a particular tokens-per-second rate.
Planning for a 14B-class model
A 14B-class model generally deserves a 32GB starting point and is more comfortable at 64GB when you need longer context, multiple services, or less aggressive quantization. Check the model publisher’s file size and runtime requirements, then add operational headroom rather than sizing RAM to the weight file alone.
Why parameter count is not enough
Two models with the same parameter label can have different memory behavior. Mixture-of-experts designs, context settings, quantization formats, and accelerator offload change both the footprint and the workload placed on the CPU, GPU, or NPU. Product names and advertised NPU TOPS figures therefore cannot substitute for a model-specific fit check.
Should you buy 32GB or 64GB for local LLMs?
Choose 32GB when you want a capable but cost-conscious local-AI desktop and expect to run one main model at a time. Choose 64GB when the mini PC is intended to remain useful as your library and projects grow.

- Buy 32GB if your workload is mostly one or two quantized models, coding assistance, short-to-moderate context, and normal desktop multitasking.
- Buy 64GB if you will keep multiple models available, run retrieval databases or containers, use larger context windows, process local datasets, or create images and other large assets.
- Prefer upgradeable memory when a lower-cost configuration can later reach 64GB. Soldered memory removes that option, so verify the exact SKU before ordering.
Additional RAM cannot compensate for an unsupported accelerator or inadequate cooling. It mainly prevents memory pressure and paging; model speed still depends on the compute path and memory bandwidth.
What mini PC specifications matter besides RAM and storage?
Use this checklist when comparing systems:
- Memory layout and upgradeability: confirm whether RAM is soldered, the maximum supported capacity, and whether both channels are populated.
- SSD expansion: check the number of M.2 slots, supported lengths, PCIe generation, and the maximum tested drive capacity.
- Sustained cooling: AI inference can run the processor continuously. A brief burst specification is less useful than a design that maintains performance without thermal throttling.
- Software acceleration: verify that your chosen runtime supports the CPU instruction set, GPU, or NPU. A high TOPS number is not a universal model-compatibility guarantee.
- Network and ports: fast Ethernet or Wi-Fi helps when moving models and datasets, while USB and display outputs matter if the mini PC will serve as a workstation or headless server.
- Power and noise: sustained inference can draw more power and produce more fan noise than ordinary office use.
What does the ASUS NUC 14 Pro AI+ example show?
The ASUS NUC 14 Pro AI+ illustrates how much configuration can vary within one mini-PC family. Current specifications include 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5x memory, included NVMe options from 256GB through 2TB, and support for a 256GB–4TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD.
That range does not mean every configuration is equally suitable for local AI. A 16GB/256GB SKU has a very different storage and multitasking envelope from a 32GB/2TB SKU. Confirm whether the selected memory is soldered, whether a second drive bay exists, and which storage capacity is installed before assuming you can upgrade later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might an edge-AI appliance have less storage?
An edge-inference appliance can be designed for a fixed, preselected workload rather than a personal model library. Axelera’s compact AI system is specified with 32GB of DDR5 and a 256GB NVMe drive. That combination can be reasonable when the appliance deploys a narrow set of models and sends training data or larger assets elsewhere.

How should you configure a mini PC before downloading models?
- List the workloads. Write down the largest model family, expected context length, number of models kept locally, retrieval or database services, containers, and any image or video assets.
- Check the model files. Use the exact quantized download sizes and runtime notes for the versions you plan to use. Do not size from parameter count alone.
- Add operational headroom. Reserve RAM for the operating system, context cache, runtime buffers, browser, editor, and background services. Intel specifically warns against planning only for the model itself.
- Reserve SSD capacity. Keep space for the operating system, updates, caches, duplicate quantizations, embeddings, and temporary downloads. A 1TB drive is the practical baseline for a general local setup.
- Verify the upgrade path. Confirm the exact mini-PC SKU, memory type, M.2 slots, supported drive sizes, and thermal clearance.
- Install one model first. Measure memory use and responsiveness with your normal context length before filling the drive with additional models.
- Watch for symptoms. Stuttering responses, heavy disk activity, application freezes, or failed downloads usually indicate memory pressure, insufficient free space, thermal throttling, or an unsupported acceleration path.
What is the practical recommendation?
For a new general-purpose AI mini PC, buy 32GB of RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD unless your workload is clearly lighter or heavier. Select 64GB and at least 2TB for a growing local model library, retrieval work, containers, datasets, or image generation. Choose 16GB/512GB only when you accept small models, short contexts, careful storage management, or frequent use of cloud services.
There is no universal model-size-to-speed chart for mini PCs. Treat the figures above as capacity planning, then validate the exact model, quantization, runtime, and cooling behavior on the specific machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will adding more RAM make a local model generate tokens faster?
Not necessarily. More RAM mainly prevents paging and allows larger contexts or models to remain resident; generation speed is also governed by memory bandwidth, CPU/GPU/NPU support, quantization, and cooling.
Is an external SSD suitable for storing AI models on a mini PC?
It can be useful for a model library when the internal drive is small, provided the connection is fast and reliable. Keep the runtime and frequently accessed files on the most dependable storage, and avoid disconnecting the model volume while the service is running.
How can I tell whether a mini PC is thermally adequate for AI?
Look for sustained-load reviews or manufacturer specifications rather than a short boost-clock claim. During a long inference session, monitor temperatures, clock speeds, fan behavior, and whether response latency rises as the system heats.
Do I need a discrete GPU for local AI on a mini PC?
No. CPU-only and integrated-accelerator workflows can run suitable quantized models, although performance and model-size limits differ. Check that your chosen runtime supports the hardware path you intend to use instead of assuming that an NPU or graphics specification guarantees compatibility.
