There is no single VRAM requirement for an AI server: it depends on the model, precision, workload, context length and number of simultaneous requests. For inference, begin with roughly 2 GB of GPU memory per billion parameters at FP16 or BF16, 1 GB at FP8 or INT8, or 0.5 GB at 4-bit, then add KV cache and runtime headroom. Training needs substantially more: a practical planning estimate for mixed-precision Adam training is about 40 GB per billion parameters, before adjustments for batch size, sequence length, checkpointing and sharding.

Those figures are starting points, not guarantees. A model’s weights are only part of what occupies GPU memory, and the right server is the one that fits the complete workload with enough headroom to run reliably.

What does an AI server’s GPU memory have to hold?

GPU memory—often called VRAM, or HBM on data-center accelerators—holds more than a model’s weight files while the model is running. In inference, the main components are the weights, the key-value (KV) cache for retained context, temporary activations and runtime allocations. In training, gradients, optimizer state and saved activations join the weights.

This distinction explains why a model that appears to fit based on its download size may fail to load, run out of memory during a long conversation, or train only at a smaller batch size than expected. Sizing should be based on the peak live memory needed by the specific workload, not just the model’s parameter count or file size.

  • Weights are the learned parameters loaded for inference or training. Their storage requirement depends on parameter count and precision.
  • KV cache stores attention keys and values for the tokens a model is processing or retaining. Its use grows with context and output length, and with the number of concurrent requests.
  • Activations are intermediate values needed while computing. Training often retains them for backpropagation; their memory demand is affected by batch size, sequence length, depth and hidden size.
  • Gradients and optimizer state are additional training data. Adam commonly keeps two FP32 state tensors per parameter, alongside gradients and model weights.
  • Runtime headroom covers temporary tensors, framework allocation and memory spikes. A theoretical fit without this margin may not be a reliable operational fit.

How do I estimate GPU memory for inference?

Start by calculating the weight footprint from parameter count and the precision you intend to serve. Then account separately for KV cache and runtime headroom; for a production server, include the expected context length and peak simultaneous requests in that estimate.

Step 1: Estimate the weights

Multiply the number of parameters by the storage required for each parameter. For a model with P billion parameters, the approximate weight footprint in decimal gigabytes is:

  • FP32: about 4 × P GB
  • FP16 or BF16: about 2 × P GB
  • FP8 or INT8: about 1 × P GB
  • 4-bit: about 0.5 × P GB

These are weight estimates, not total server requirements. Quantized weights reduce the amount of memory the weights occupy, but they do not eliminate KV cache or runtime allocations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Include KV cache and runtime overhead

KV-cache demand varies with the model architecture and serving configuration: relevant factors include context length, generated output, concurrent requests, layer count, KV heads and cache precision. A short prompt served to one user is not a sound proxy for a long-context service handling several users at once.

The size of this effect can be substantial. NVIDIA’s 2025 technical blog gives an example in which one user with a 128k-token Llama 3 70B context can consume about 40 GB of FP16 KV cache. Treat that as a specific workload illustration, not a universal cache requirement for every 70B model or serving setup.

Finally, leave room for temporary tensors, the framework and runtime spikes. NVIDIA’s 2025 guidance offers a rough estimate for a 7B FP16 model of 28 GB, using an overhead factor of two on the 14 GB weight estimate. This is a planning estimate, not a measured benchmark; the actual margin depends on the model and workload.

Step 3: Check the workload, not just the model

Before choosing a card, write down the intended precision, maximum context and output lengths, and expected concurrency. Compare the sum of weights, cache and overhead with usable GPU memory. If the service must handle multiple requests, estimate the cache for that concurrency rather than sizing for a single request and hoping the server can absorb the difference.

How much memory do 7B, 13B and 70B models need?

For inference, the weight-only estimates below show why lower precision can make a model fit on fewer cards. They do not include KV cache, activations or runtime headroom. The values are AWS Prescriptive Guidance’s approximate figures on the current page accessed in 2026.

Model size FP16 weights INT8 weights 4-bit weights
7B 14 GB 7 GB 3.5 GB
13B 26 GB 13 GB 6.5 GB
70B 140 GB 70 GB 35 GB

7B: a reasonable small-model target, with precision still important

A 7B model’s FP16 weights take about 14 GB, while its 4-bit weights take about 3.5 GB. A 16 GB card may run a quantized, short-context workload, but that leaves a need to account for cache and runtime usage. A 24 GB card is a more useful starting point for 4–7B models, according to Google Cloud’s 2025 guidance; it is not a guarantee that every context length or concurrency target will fit.

13B: weight-only FP16 already exceeds 24 GB

At about 26 GB, 13B FP16 weights alone exceed a 24 GB card’s capacity before cache or runtime allocations are considered. A 48 GB card provides more room for this use case, though the actual fit still depends on context and concurrency. INT8 and 4-bit reduce the weight estimate to about 13 GB and 6.5 GB, respectively.

70B: precision or multiple GPUs become central

A 70B model’s FP16 weights are about 140 GB, so a single 80 GB card cannot hold those weights at that precision. At 4-bit, the weight estimate falls to about 35 GB, but KV cache and runtime overhead remain. For a long context or multiple simultaneous users, those additional allocations can be significant; NVIDIA’s 128k-token example illustrates that cache can itself consume about 40 GB for one user in the stated configuration.

These examples are sizing arithmetic, not claims that a particular model will load or achieve a particular speed on a given card. Model implementation, serving software, precision support and workload configuration matter as well.

How much GPU memory does training need?

Training requires much more memory than inference because the GPU must support the computation that updates model parameters, not only hold weights for generating outputs. A useful broad planning estimate for mixed-precision Adam training is about 40 GB per billion parameters, but the actual requirement depends on batch size, sequence length, activation checkpointing and sharding.

The estimate is consistent with two more specific reference points. Ohio Supercomputer Center’s 2024 guidance uses approximately 40 GB per billion parameters for mixed-precision Adam training. Hugging Face’s Transformers documentation, version 5.8.1, estimates roughly 85 GB for training a 4B model in mixed precision at batch size 16. These are planning references for the described conditions, not universal minimums.

For perspective, PyTorch Lightning states that even one 80 GB H100 is not enough to train a 30B-parameter model with batch size 1 and 16-bit precision. That example shows why simply comparing parameter weight size with card capacity can badly understate training requirements.

What changes the training estimate?

  • Batch size: larger batches require more memory for the examples and intermediate computations being processed together.
  • Sequence length: longer sequences increase activation demand and can make memory use rise sharply for language-model training.
  • Activation checkpointing: retaining fewer activations can reduce memory pressure, with a trade-off in computation because values must be recomputed.
  • Optimizer: optimizer states add memory beyond the weights and gradients; Adam commonly uses two FP32 state tensors per parameter.
  • Sharding: distributing model state across GPUs can make a job fit when a single card cannot, but adds interconnect and sharding considerations.

A practical estimate should use the intended training setup, not the inference footprint. If the full state cannot fit on one GPU, consider reducing memory use through checkpointing or CPU offload, changing precision where supported, or sharding across multiple GPUs. Each option changes performance or operational complexity, so validate the resulting fit and throughput for the actual job.

Is 16 GB, 24 GB, 40 GB or 80 GB enough?

Capacity tiers are useful filters, but they do not map to a single model size that always works. Google Cloud’s 2025 guidance positions 16 GB for basic inference or very small LoRA fine-tuning, 24 GB as a recommended starting point for 4–7B models, and 40 GB or more for larger models or maximum training speed.

Memory tier What the cited guidance supports What still needs checking
16 GB Basic inference or very small LoRA fine-tuning (Google Cloud, 2025). Model precision, context, concurrent requests and runtime headroom.
24 GB Recommended starting point for 4–7B models (Google Cloud, 2025). Whether the chosen model and workload fit after cache and overhead are added.
40 GB+ For larger models or maximum training speed (Google Cloud, 2025). Training configuration and the memory needed for optimizer state and activations.
80 GB An H100 with 80 GB is cited as insufficient for 30B training at batch size 1 and 16-bit precision (PyTorch Lightning). Whether multi-GPU sharding or other memory-saving measures are required.

For local development and inference, a 48 GB NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada is one credible single-GPU workstation example. It offers more headroom than 24 GB, but it does not make every training workload feasible; compare its capacity with the complete training state, not just the weights.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Should I use one GPU or several?

Use one GPU when the complete workload fits with adequate headroom and its throughput is sufficient. Use several when a model or training state cannot fit on one card, or when the workload calls for more capacity—but evaluate how the model will be sharded and what the interconnect costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple cards should not be treated as a frictionless pool of memory. The system must distribute relevant model state across GPUs, and sharding introduces overhead and communication requirements. A multi-GPU configuration that fits a model may still have unacceptable latency, throughput or power use for the intended service.

For cloud deployments, AWS lists accelerator tiers including L4 (22 GB), L40S (44 GB), H100 (80 GB), H200 (141 GB), B200 (180 GB) and B300 (268 GB). These are capacity examples, not a claim that every instance, region or current offering is available on the same terms. Google Cloud’s cited guidance describes 16 GB, 24 GB and 40 GB+ tiers for progressively larger inference and fine-tuning jobs. Verify current availability, instance configuration and pricing before making a deployment decision.

What is the safest way to size a server before buying or renting it?

Write down the job’s requirements, calculate the memory for its largest expected workload, then validate with the actual model and serving or training configuration. A paper estimate narrows the choices; a workload test catches allocation peaks and performance trade-offs before a production commitment.

  1. Record model and job details. Note parameter count, inference or training, target precision, batch size if training, and maximum context and output length.
  2. Calculate the weights. Multiply parameter count by the bytes-per-parameter estimate for the chosen precision.
  3. Estimate non-weight memory. For inference, estimate KV cache for the target context and concurrency. For training, include gradients, optimizer state and activations.
  4. Add headroom. Allow for framework allocation, temporary tensors and runtime spikes; do not select a card whose full advertised memory is already consumed by the estimate.
  5. Compare single- and multi-GPU designs. If one card cannot fit the workload, assess quantization, checkpointing, CPU offload or sharding, including their throughput and latency implications.
  6. Validate the real workload. Test the intended model, context, concurrency or training batch and sequence length. Check peak memory as well as whether the job completes at acceptable speed.

What commonly causes a GPU memory estimate to fail?

The most common mistake is treating the weight footprint as the complete requirement. Other failures usually come from sizing for an unrealistically short context or a single user, overlooking training state, or leaving no margin for runtime allocations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Weights fit, but loading fails: the weight-only number omitted runtime overhead or other live allocations. Recalculate the total and consider a lower precision or more-capacity card.
  • Short prompts work, long prompts fail: KV cache grows with context and output length. Size for the longest supported request, not only the typical prompt.
  • One user works, concurrent traffic fails: cache demand also rises with concurrent requests. Include expected peak concurrency in the inference estimate.
  • Inference works, training runs out of memory: training adds gradients, optimizer states and saved activations. Re-estimate using the training workload, and assess checkpointing, offload or sharding.
  • A multi-GPU configuration fits but performs poorly: capacity is only one selection axis. Check interconnect and sharding overhead, plus throughput and latency, against the workload’s needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 4-bit model use exactly half the memory of an 8-bit model?

The weight-only arithmetic in the table gives 0.5 GB per billion parameters at 4-bit versus about 1 GB at INT8. That comparison does not establish total runtime memory, because cache and other allocations must still be counted.

Can I size an AI server using the model download’s file size?

Use file size only as a clue to the stored weights, not as the server’s full memory requirement. The running workload also needs memory for cache, runtime allocations, and—during training—gradients, optimizer state and activations.

What should I measure during a trial run?

Track peak GPU memory while exercising the largest context, intended concurrency, or training batch and sequence length. Also check whether throughput and latency meet the workload’s needs; a run that merely completes does not establish that the server is fast enough.
