Keep a gasoline-powered car’s tank at least half full as a routine preparedness baseline. If a storm or other serious disruption may affect your area and fuel is available, fill up early rather than waiting for the threat to arrive. The right amount is a fraction of your own tank—not a universal number of gallons.

How much gas should you keep in your car?

For everyday preparedness, aim to keep the tank at least half full. Ready PA, a public-safety resource from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, gives that advice for gas-powered vehicles because pumps may stop working or queues may delay an evacuation: Ready PA vehicle preparedness guidance.

Public Safety Canada also recommends keeping a vehicle at least half full when there is a risk of a power outage: Public Safety Canada emergency kit guidance. These are preparedness recommendations, not a guarantee that you can travel a particular distance or that a station will remain open.

Why there is no universal gallon amount

Authorities express the baseline as a share of the vehicle’s tank, not as a fixed gallon quota. Tank capacities vary, so “half full” means half of your own vehicle’s capacity. The cited guidance does not establish that a full tank is necessary year-round or identify a tested reserve that guarantees a safe evacuation.

Should you fill up before a storm?

If a serious storm may threaten your area and fuel is available, topping up before conditions worsen is sensible. Florida’s hurricane guidance advises keeping vehicles at least half full during hurricane season and filling at least one vehicle when a storm may threaten the state: Florida hurricane supply checklist. That is Florida storm guidance, not a universal instruction to keep every car full throughout the year.

Follow local emergency alerts and evacuation instructions. A half-full tank is a general preparedness floor, not a substitute for directions from authorities or for planning around local conditions.

Does the same advice apply to electric cars?

No. A petrol-tank fraction does not apply to an electric vehicle. Public Safety Canada separately advises keeping an EV charged when an outage is a risk, as part of its preparedness guidance: Public Safety Canada emergency kit guidance.

Should you keep spare gasoline in the car?

A recommendation to keep the vehicle’s tank half full is not a recommendation to carry a spare can. Portable gasoline has separate fire, vapour and storage hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises storing portable fuel in a cool, well-ventilated place away from homes and ignition sources; its guidance covers portable containers of five gallons or less and cautions against keeping them in a house or basement: CPSC portable fuel container safety.

Leaked petrol vapour in a vehicle can create an explosive fuel-air mixture. WorkSafe Tasmania advises securing containers upright and, where possible, carrying fuel outside the passenger cabin or boot: WorkSafe Tasmania petrol safety guidance. That is jurisdiction-specific guidance about the hazard, not a universal legal limit; requirements vary, so check your local rules and the container manufacturer’s instructions. Never siphon gasoline by mouth: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that it can make you very sick: CDC indoor air quality guidance.

What if authorities announce a fuel shortage plan?

Follow the instructions issued where you live. In Great Britain, the National Emergency Plan for Fuel describes measures that could be used during a severe shortage, including designated stations, priority distribution and limits on purchases: UK National Emergency Plan for Fuel. The plan describes possible responses; it does not mean those controls are active now, and it does not apply outside Great Britain.
