Apple depends on Samsung selectively, not completely. Samsung has been an important source of iPhone memory and was widely believed to be the sole supplier of the expensive OLED display used in the iPhone X generation. Later teardowns, however, found parts from Intel, Micron, Toshiba and SanDisk, showing that Apple also qualifies competing suppliers and can change the mix between model generations.
Apple does not publish a current Samsung percentage for component spending, unit volume, display share or memory share. Its filings instead describe a broader risk: some components come from single or limited sources, while new products often use custom parts that initially have only one qualified supplier. The practical conclusion is that a Samsung stoppage could disrupt particular iPhone components and launch schedules, but the public evidence does not support saying that Samsung supplies every major iPhone part or that Apple is globally dependent on one company.
What “dependence on Samsung” actually means
Apple and Samsung compete in smartphones, operating systems and services while also operating in the same electronics supply chain. Samsung Electronics has businesses capable of making several parts used in mobile devices, including memory, application processors and image sensors. Apple can therefore be both a customer of Samsung components and a competitor to Samsung products.

Dependence should be measured at the component and production-stage level, not by asking where an iPhone is assembled. A useful assessment asks five questions:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Is Samsung a confirmed supplier for this component or only a plausible one?
- How many other suppliers have Apple-qualified designs and factories?
- Can another supplier meet Apple’s volume, yield and reliability requirements?
- How long would qualification, tooling and ramp-up take?
- Would a switch preserve Apple’s material-traceability and recycled-content requirements?
Those questions produce different answers for an OLED panel, DRAM, NAND storage, a modem, an image sensor or a battery component. A temporary sole-source position for one custom part is not the same as dependence on Samsung for the entire iPhone.
Where Samsung has supplied iPhone components
| Component category | What the public record shows | Substitutability and certainty |
|---|---|---|
| Displays | Reuters reported in 2018 that Samsung was believed to be the sole supplier of the costly OLED display for the iPhone X. | High short-term concentration for that product generation; current Samsung share is not stated. |
| DRAM and other memory | Samsung supplied memory chips for earlier iPhones. Later teardowns identified Micron DRAM and Toshiba or SanDisk NAND in iPhone XS units. | Multiple qualified sources have appeared across generations, but the model-by-model mix is not public. |
| Application processors | Samsung’s Device Solutions portfolio lists mobile application processors, but no public filing in the supplied record identifies Apple as a current customer or gives volumes. | Samsung capability is documented; Apple-specific sourcing is not confirmed. |
| Image sensors | Samsung lists image sensors in its portfolio. The public record here does not establish a current Samsung share of iPhone sensors. | Capability does not prove supply; current dependence is unknown. |
| Communications chips | Teardowns of iPhone XS models found Intel communications chips. | Shows Apple used an alternative to Samsung for that function in that generation; it does not establish today’s modem mix. |
Displays: the iPhone X was unusually concentrated
The 2018 Reuters teardown report described Samsung as the believed sole supplier of the iPhone X OLED display. OLED panels require specialized production lines, precise thin-film-transistor processes and very high yields at Apple’s volumes. When a new panel design is custom-made for one phone, another supplier cannot normally replace it by changing purchase orders alone; it must reproduce the design, pass Apple’s reliability tests and build enough capacity.
That historical example demonstrates concentrated risk, but it is tied to the iPhone X generation. It should not be converted into a claim that Samsung is still Apple’s sole display supplier. Apple has worked with other display makers over time, and public filings do not disclose the present percentage supplied by Samsung.

Samsung’s memory business includes DRAM and NAND flash, the two broad classes used for working memory and storage. Samsung supplied memory in earlier iPhones, yet the iPhone XS teardown evidence is more diversified: Intel communications silicon, Micron DRAM, and Toshiba and SanDisk NAND were identified. Morningstar analyst Abhinav Davuluri described Apple’s use of Toshiba for NAND and Micron for DRAM as consistent with Apple’s desire to reduce reliance on Samsung while competing against it.
Teardown findings identify parts in particular retail units; they do not reveal the percentage of all units using each vendor, the negotiated price or whether another supplier was qualified for the same bill of materials. A memory chip marked with a vendor name is therefore evidence of use in that generation, not a complete sourcing census.

Processors and sensors: capability is not proof of an Apple contract
Samsung’s official minerals reporting lists mobile application processors and image sensors among its Device Solutions products. That establishes that Samsung can manufacture these categories. It does not disclose Apple as a customer, Apple’s order volumes or the portion of an iPhone bill of materials made by Samsung. Apple’s custom application processors have historically been associated with Apple-designed silicon and specialist manufacturing arrangements, so the existence of a Samsung product line should not be read as evidence that Samsung supplies the current iPhone processor.
Why Apple keeps multiple suppliers
Apple’s 2025 Form 10-K states that future operating results depend on obtaining components in sufficient quantities on commercially reasonable terms. The same filing warns that Apple obtains certain components from single or limited sources and is therefore exposed to significant supply and pricing risks.

Single sourcing can be intentional. A supplier may have unique process technology, an Apple-specific design, a patent license, or the only factory that has passed qualification. Using one source can also simplify engineering and deliver better early yields. The trade-off is that a factory fire, earthquake, export restriction, quality failure or commercial dispute can affect production immediately.
Apple also says new products often use custom components that may initially be available from only one supplier. Qualification is cumulative: engineers must validate electrical performance, thermal behavior, durability, software interaction, security and manufacturing yield. A second supplier that makes a nominally identical part still needs approval for the exact design and production process.
Manufacturing geography is different from supplier ownership
Apple’s final assembly is concentrated in Asia, with China remaining the center of its manufacturing operations according to the American Enterprise Institute’s analysis of Apple’s 2023 supplier data. That concentration matters for logistics and disruption risk, but it does not mean the parts are made by Chinese companies or that Samsung controls the supply chain.

The same analysis found that 63 percent of Apple’s semiconductor suppliers were headquartered in the United States and 4 percent in China. For batteries and battery components, 53 percent of suppliers were headquartered in China. Headquarters indicate where a supplier is based, not necessarily where every wafer, panel, cell or subassembly is fabricated. A component may cross several borders before final assembly.
This distinction explains why a disruption in one country can affect an iPhone even when the contracting supplier is headquartered elsewhere. Capacity, specialized equipment, shipping routes, local utilities and sub-tier suppliers all influence whether Apple can move orders quickly.
What would happen if Samsung stopped supplying Apple?
The effect would depend on which Samsung factories and components were affected, the timing in the product cycle and how many alternatives Apple had already qualified.
Display interruption
A sudden loss of a Samsung OLED panel would be the most difficult case if Samsung supplied a large share of a particular model. Apple would need another panel maker with matching dimensions, brightness, color calibration, touch integration and reliability. Even an existing Apple supplier might need new tooling and months of validation. The immediate outcomes could include reduced launch quantities, allocation to priority markets, delayed repairs or a temporary change in panel specifications.
Memory interruption
Memory is generally more substitutable because several large manufacturers produce standardized DRAM and NAND. Apple could shift a portion of orders to another qualified vendor, but the change is constrained by available capacity, package design, power characteristics, firmware and testing. A global shortage could raise prices even when an alternative exists.

Processor or sensor interruption
A custom processor or image sensor would be harder to replace than commodity memory. The alternative must match the camera pipeline, power budget, software drivers and security requirements. If Samsung were only one of several qualified sources, Apple could rebalance orders; if it were the sole source for a custom part, the disruption would be more severe.
Timing and capacity are decisive
Switching suppliers is not a single purchase-order action. Apple must reserve wafer, panel or packaging capacity, transfer specifications, complete audits, run engineering validation and build inventory. A supplier may be technically capable but unable to provide enough output during an iPhone launch quarter. Capacity risk can therefore remain even when a second source exists on paper.
Materials and traceability add another qualification hurdle
Apple’s sourcing decisions include mineral origin, recycled content and smelter controls, not only price and electrical performance. Apple reported that, for products manufactured during 2024, 100 percent of the identified 3TG smelters and refiners in its supply chain participated in independent third-party audits for the tenth consecutive year. The 2025 Conflict Minerals Report identified 234 smelters and refiners in that supply chain.
Those figures describe participation in audits, not proof that every atom in every part can be traced to a single mine. Apple notes that aggregate smelter information cannot always identify the origin of minerals in a specific component. Traceability is consequently a supply-chain capability that a replacement supplier must demonstrate.

How to judge Apple’s current Samsung exposure
Public information supports a directional assessment, not a precise percentage. Use the following framework when evaluating a new iPhone generation or a supply-chain shock:
| Question | Evidence available | What it lets you conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Is Samsung technically able to make the part? | Samsung lists DRAM, SSD, NAND flash, mobile application processors and image sensors in its Device Solutions portfolio. | Samsung has relevant capability; it does not prove Apple purchases. |
| Was Samsung found in a specific iPhone? | Historical reporting and teardowns identified Samsung memory and an iPhone X OLED panel, while iPhone XS units included parts from other vendors. | Confirms use by generation and unit, not a current fleet-wide share. |
| What does Apple disclose about concentration? | Apple’s 2024 and 2025 Form 10-Ks warn about single and limited sources and custom components. | Supply concentration is a general Apple risk; Samsung’s portion is not quantified. |
| Can another supplier ramp? | Public filings do not provide Apple’s qualification schedules, reserved capacity or switching lead times. | Any disruption estimate must be scenario-based rather than a precise forecast. |
| Can the replacement meet materials rules? | Apple reports audited 3TG participation and recycled-material objectives. | Engineering, audit and traceability work are part of the switch. |
Apple’s public filings do not state a Samsung-specific percentage of component spend, unit volume, display share, memory share or profit exposure. Any article or investment model that gives an exact current percentage without newer primary disclosure is making an assumption, not reporting an Apple figure.
What this means for customers and investors
For customers, Samsung involvement does not mean every iPhone is built with the same Samsung parts. Teardowns can vary by storage tier, region, production date and factory allocation. Two otherwise identical phones may contain different memory or communications suppliers while meeting Apple’s specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor investors, the relevant risk is not simply whether Apple buys from a competitor. It is whether a supplier has unique technology, whether Apple has qualified a backup, how much capacity is available, and whether the substitute can meet Apple’s environmental and traceability requirements. A diversified supplier list lowers dependence, but it does not eliminate exposure to industry-wide shortages or shared sub-tier manufacturers.
Bottom line: selective dependence, with component-specific vulnerabilities
Samsung has been an important iPhone supplier, especially for memory and historically for the iPhone X OLED display. Apple has also demonstrated supplier diversification through Micron, Toshiba, SanDisk and Intel parts in later teardowns. Samsung’s product portfolio shows broad technical capability, but it does not reveal Apple’s current orders.
The defensible answer is therefore component-specific: Apple may face meaningful short-term disruption if Samsung supplies a highly customized part at high volume, while memory exposure is more substitutable when other vendors are qualified. Because Apple does not publish current Samsung shares, the scale of today’s dependence cannot be expressed as a reliable percentage.
